I STILL DON'T UNDERSTAND WHAT THE RED PAIN IS

Simon And Matt and Malachi did a short comic explaining all that in Strikefile #2 that just got sent to the printer.

Hey Brandon so I just heard you were the one who hooked Ricken up with DC and I was just wondering how did that come about?

Ricken is really interesting in that she does fan art of characters that (in my opinion) is soooo much better than the vast majority of the real deal.

In an ideal world I feel like DC or Marvel or whoever would just throw money at her to do fan comics of their characters. but things never seem to work like that.

So I knew her work from Deviantart. (here) and would rant about how it was crazy that no one was hiring her at these companies that she was doing amazing fan art of. Around then my pal Joe Keatinge was doing some DC work and brought her on to draw it (along with some covers of his Image books). I hope it was a good experience for her— it kind of killed me (& Joe) to see the colors that DC put over her fantastic lines. I still hope to see more full books drawn (and colored!) by her printed over here. I’m sure I don’t need to mention how much I prefer to see people do their own non-corporate work but I got the idea that she has some joy in fan art. sooo I wish her the best with that. Maybe Marvel would throw an X-23 book at her or something (and please let her write it—shit— print it in Japanese, it’d be awesome) she’s soooo good at it.

What have you been reading lately?

I just started the new Gibson book. I like it lots so far (and like that it’s sci fi) & always feel like I learn about writing from reading his work. The first chapter has a room where a guy lives that he’s made into like a big tupperware that he can just hose out when it gets dirty.

I really dug Sam Bosma’s Fantasy basketball and I managed to grab The hanging tower from him at SPX. It feels like a shot story I’ll wanna read over and over. It’s short but with a lot of implied back story. and he draws sooo good.

I got a stack of 80’s Lensmen books and for some reason I’ve been reading them out of order. This issue had some dudes attack an alien base where aliens were experimenting on humans to turn them into aliens.it’s pretty basic stuff.

The new Lose was gooood. I like the crime guys with tails in this one. I also got a lot of his zines when I saw Deforge recently. I’m impressed by how much emotional weight he gets in so few lines or pages.

Bozz Chronicles is an old favorite of mine that I’m re-reading to write an intro for. It is so much fun.

And I’ve been back on Gold digger recently. Penny and Ace got married in this issue and there were some butt jokes. I guess Gina teaches now. I’m out of the loop.

I also read a comic called Collection (that I cant find a cover image online for.) It’s an 80’s Eternity comic about the last humans on an ice world fighting off an army of robots who use humans to power them. it’s kind of fun and bleak at the same time.
