Go for the IPL 2019 Cup, CSK!!

Here is a short video I made to support our home team Chennai Super Kings. They are surprisingly the underdogs – having lost to Mumbai Indians repeatedly in this 2019 edition of IPL.

Of course, their tournament performance has been satisfactory except for against this particular team. Let’s hope they can rise once again when it matters the most – during the IPL final match tomorrow.

Go for the cup, CSK!!

Newspaper Vending Machine @ Chennai Metro!

View this post on Instagram

A post shared by Rajesh K (@wowsuper_net) on May 5, 2019 at 7:15am PDT

We traveled in Chennai Metro recently (Thirumangalam to Vadapalani) and were surprised to find that their railway stations are equipped with a few types of vending machines.

The vending machine that surprised us the most was the Newspaper Vending machine. You can see it in action in the above-embedded video.

We have never seen a newspaper vending machine before. So we were intrigued and dropped a five rupee coin inside. A Tamil newspaper edition of Thina Malar popped out of the machine almost instantly.

The regular cost of the paper is 6.00 rupees (according to the printed info on it) but at this vending machine, we got it for 5.00 rupees. Not that we read much inside, we just glanced through the headlines…

There were other vending machines like the tickets, Pepsi/Red Bull/soft drinks ones, etc. But another very interesting vending machine was the one that dispensed orange juice.

We actually saw a worker putting in oranges on the top, so I guess they are juiced once we put in the cash. We didn’t try it as one juice was priced at 100 rupees, and outside we can get it for less than half that amount. Maybe next time we might. Anyway, here it is –

That’s why we keep utilizing all types of transport services in the city – to discover interesting things that we can write/blog about

Wooden Engraving Gifts in Chennai – Surprize Gifts

Surprize Gifts is a shop in Chennai (Nungambakkam, Perambur) specializing in personalized gifts. In the above video, you can see a few samples of their wooden engraving gifts.

If you give your photo, they’ll engrave it on a wooden plank. When compared to regular gifts like cup & saucer, flowers, photo frames, etc. these customized gifts show that you have not only made something that the recipients will cherish, but you have taken efforts to make it.

Of course, the photo may not be very clear when engraved on wood, but there is a rustic look that gives it a vintage touch. It is a class apart from regular gifts.

This is very much a stand-alone gift, but imagine the effect you can create by placing this wooden engraved photo along with the real photo!

Unlike metal engraving gifts that are expensive and requires you to buy in volume, these wooden engraving gifts can be ordered even if you want just one piece. And these are inexpensive.

If you decide to buy make sure to order in advance as it may take a couple of days or more to prepare it with your photos/message.

Sometimes these come along with a frame, shape, clock, etc. So you might want to walk into the Surprize Gifts shop at Nungambakkam (Google Maps link) to see the latest wooden engraved gift options available. Or Call Mr. Muthukumar @ 9962013990.

They also deal with many other types of personalized/customized gifts for personal & corporate requirements.

A post shared by Rajesh K (@wowsuper_net) on Apr 30, 2019 at 3:50am PDT

Being a professional blogger comes with its own perks. Advanced Hair Studio invited us to an event, on the occassion of completing 10-years of operation in the Indian subcontinet, at ITC Grand Chola, Chennai. They had invited Sourav Ganguly (Needs no introduction – I assume) & Mohit Sharma (Current CSK player and former Indian Cricketer).

You can see our selfie with Mohit Sharma above.

I know what you are thinking – why on earth would he not take a selfie with Sourav Ganguly? Well, despite our best efforts, we have to postpone that one for the next event. Hmm…

Education & Soft Power (Discussion)

I was invited, as an alumni, to attend a round-table discussion on ‘Education & Soft Power with Academicians’, organized by DAV Group of Schools, Chennai in collaboration with Center for Soft Power, New Delhi.

The speakers were – Prof. Gulab Mir Rahmany (Associate Professor, Political Sociology, Afghanistan) & Prof. Dilafruz Nasirkhodjaeva (Sr. Researcher, Economics, Uzbekistan).

What is Soft Power?

Soft Power is the influence exerted by one culture/country over another by methods other than violence, force, or coercion.

Some good examples of India exerting soft power in the Asian region was given by Prof. Gulab from Afghanistan. Today, most of the youth in his country are influenced by Bollywood. So much that they demand the same clothes worn by Indian film stars! He also mentioned that Indian soap operas (TV serials) like Kyonki Saas bhi Kabhi Bahu thi are very popular in Afghanistan – he sometimes skips news for family members to watch those!

It seems even Uzbekistan was not spared of Indian (movie) soft power – Raj Kapoor, Shah Rukh Khan, etc. are a big stars there. When the speaker was young, she was not able to get tickets to a bollywood movie (Disco Dancer – as it was mostly house full) and a TV channel played the Indian epic ‘Mahabharata’ back to back!

Education seems to be another way in which India exerts soft power as both the speakers studied in Osmania University, Hyderabad, and many students from the two countries regularly come to India for higher studies. India is increasingly preferred over China and other countries for education due to the courses being taught here in English.

The speakers reiterated their preference to the use of soft power to influence other regions – over hard power (like military). Soft power leads to more cooperation and creates win-win opportunities in terms of trade, man power, technology, education, etc. while hard power leads only to subjugation and exploitation.

I can only present a small summary of the one-and-a-half-hour discussion here – I learned much more about the two countries, and even about India! I enjoyed this discussion and am looking forward for more such.

Chennai: Buy Paper/Jute Bags made by Ppl with Disabilities

Incepted in 1989 with just 6 kids, Vasantham – a school & home for people with disabilities – now supports 123 children and adults. It is located at Mogappair East – behind the bus stop, adjacent to Anjaneyar Temple & opposite to Narayana School, Mogappair East.

Vasantham is run by a good friend’s family who are also an alumni of DAV Mogappair Schools. We had a chance to visit this place last week and were impressed with the facilities and the good work done by them. In fact, this is the first time I saw someone hand weaving fabric!

They have a small cute shop outside Vasantham building which is accessible to everyone (refer first pic) where they sell jute bags/pouches, paper bags, candles/diyas, table runners, wall hangings, flower vases, etc. – all made by people with disabilities. It seems they also offer gift vouchers of various denominations.

In fact, when I went there, they were giving final touches to paper bags that were intended as wedding return-gifts – very useful now especially after the plastic ban. Buy buying their products, you are avoiding plastic and supporting a good cause too!

They also showed us the large terrace garden on their premises maintained by kids with disabilities. I forgot to click pics inside – will do that on my next visit. Do have a look at their product offerings on their website. You can drop into their place if you happen to visit Mogappair or nearby.

This year they are planning to celebrate the 30th Anniversary, and hence are planning to organize an event Mostly a play by Crazy Mohan. I will write about it here on my blog once I get the news.
