Walt Disney (Biography) – Book Review

“Walt Disney: An American Original (Commemorative Edition)” is the biography of Walt Disney, who was active professionally during 1920s-1960s in the US. Initially he was making Cartoon Movies under the banner of Disney Studios, and then he built the Disney Land amusement park.

You may not believe that Walt Disney was from a middle class family in the US, or that his company was in huge debt even until early 1960s – almost three decades after he started making animated movies.

Walt never cared about his finances, that was the domain of his brother Roy – who constantly supported his venture throughout, and even after Walt.

Instead, Walt focused on how to give the best entertainment to people – how much ever that might cost. That led him to think better, and of course – bigger!

Walt faced huge backlashes in his professional life. Imagine, this man goes through both the world wars – serving as an ambulance corp driver during the first world war, and watching his company space being taken over by the Air Force personnel during the second war. His first company, Laughograms, where Mickey Mouse was initially created, went bankrupt.

To add to that, he had huge debts almost throughout his movie making career. Although many of his movies made profits, he would promptly reinvest more into his company to make better animated films. Frankly, it was due to the patience of Bank of America (his main lender) that his company even survived the world war II.

When Walt conceived Disney Land amusement park, the largest and the best amusement park until then, his company was under enormous debt. Banks did not even lend money for that new venture. That didn’t deter him from dreaming big, and of course, achieving big.

In the book it is mentioned that after the enormous success of Disney Land, one day Walt sees a Mercedes Coupe and wishes he could buy one. And then, it strikes him, that he can indeed afford it. By then Walt was already in his 60s!

His life shows that where there is a will, there is a way. And that one doesn’t need a big stash of investment to make big things happen.

Walt Disney: An American Original: Commemorative Edition is the second best biography I read. The best biography I read until now was about Steve Jobs.

Our Shih Tzu Chikki’s First Year Birthday

Our Shih Tzu Puppy- Chikki’s First Year birthday was on March 3rd. So we organized a small birthday celebration with some decoration and a cake that looked like our Chikki. Actually the reference for that cake we came to the shop was the image of a polar bear!

Since Chikki is already popular with the kids around our home, some of them came to the birthday too. Chikki, generally mischievous, was quite silent on that day when sitting on the chair. Probably it was afraid of all the sudden attention it was getting.

Unfortunately we couldn’t give the cake to Chikki as it contained a lot of chocolate, which is bad for dogs. But we bought its favourite treat and gave it, which it relished.

I still can’t believe that Chikki has been with us for a year. Please join me in wishing Chikki a very happy birthday

2024 Flower Show @ Semmozhi Poonga (Chennai)

We visited the Kalaignar Centenary Flower Show (Feb. 2024) at Semmozhi Poonga, Chennai yesterday. The above-embedded video contains details and a few photos from the event.

Dates: Feb. 10 to Feb. 19, 2024.

Timings: 10 A.M. to 6 P.M.

Venue: Semmozhi Poonga, Chennai (Google Maps link).

Entrance Ticket Cost: Rs. 150 for Adults, Rs. 75 for Kids (5-12 Years).

As usual, the flower decorations were excellent. This time, the flowers were spread across a huge area – 4 acres of the Semmozhi Poonga Park. In addition to flower arrangements, they had people showing how to do pottery, flower bokeh arrangement, face/palm painting, etc.

I thought the ticket cost was quite high, but managing an event of this scale, even for the Govt, should’ve been a difficult task. This cost is nothing when compared to visiting Ooty or Kodai to watch the flower show!

I loved the exhibit of the vintage car decorated with flowers. That was my favourite.

Do visit the show – you’ll love the experience. If time permits, do one round without taking photos and videos too.

Happy New Year 2024!!

I take this opportunity to wish all my blog readers a very Happy New Year 2024

Work-wise, I have been occupied with many twists, so I couldn’t post much during the last couple of months. I hope you’re all doing good.

We watched a few movies recently, but one stood out – 12th Fail. It’s a Bollywood movie but it’s also available in Tamil (Disney+Hotstar OTT). We watched the Hindi version in the Theater. It’s an excellent movie – despite Ramya not understanding much Hindi, she mentioned that she was glued to the screen throughout. Do watch this movie.

Let me know any interesting movies you’ve watched recently. Nowadays it’s difficult to select which movies to watch in OTT on weekends!

In other news, Chikki is now an adult! Since it’s crossed 10 months, Royal Canin recommends we give Adult-Mini food. Although it’s matured a lot with age, sometimes the dog is very adamant.

For instance, it insists that it wants to sleep on our bed, especially after a haircut. Since we have been drenching it with “chellam” all along, mostly it gets its way. But once hair regrows, it will go back to sleep on the floor. Actually, our New Year resolution is to try and be more strict with Chikki from now on (at least) but that’s going to be very difficult. This dog is an angel – except when it becomes adamant

My orthopedic health has been improving steadily, thanks to sunlight exposure, Vitamin D3 tonics, and Chikki. Because of our dog, I walk one hour on the terrace every day! We have been able to go to movies and even a couple of half-day events. But sometimes my neck or leg does pain. I tolerate it for now and don’t strain it excessively.

Marketing Idea for a New Restaurant

A new restaurant opened in our locality, maybe 1 K.M. from our house. This restaurant is a part of a big chain of restaurants, and this group is quite big.

The restaurant was very spacious and had more seating than other similar restaurants in the area. So I was wondering how they would promote their offerings, especially when similar restaurants were available nearby.

One fine day, I found a big board – Mini Tiffin at Rs. 40. This included five tiffin items, each of which would cost Rs. 40 at a similar restaurant. And a mini-tiffin like this would cost around Rs. 80-120 in nearby restaurants.

The only catch was that it would be available only from 7 A.M. in the morning to 9 A.M. So, attracted by the offer, one fine day, crossing a few other familiar restaurants on the way, we went to this restaurant to try.

The mini-tiffin was good. They didn’t cut any quality or quantity to match the reduced price. Satisfied, we ordered two teas after finishing. One tea costs Rs. 35, the price of which is as much as the mini-tiffin – so this was another catch!

Since we could pay Rs. 75 for a mini-tiffin of this quality, we didn’t mind. And we kept going, like once in a week or so. Then we started buying chat, juice, and then during a festival, we also started buying sweets. All this, we were buying at other restaurants earlier.

Now, looks like, even if they remove that Rs. 40 mini-tiffin offer, we will continue to go and eat there out of sheer habit!

Don’t you think this is a good marketing technique?

Why do Music Directors think they are Great Singers?

I am not saying that music directors are bad singers – their voice is OK. But, imagine, if the songs they sang were instead sung by professional singers, how much better the songs could have been!

I find this issue mostly in the Kollywood (Tamil) movie industry. I understand that music directors have a great passion for singing and they are in charge of selecting the voice talents for their songs, but that doesn’t mean that they should sing it themselves. I am sure professional singers can sing much better than them.

Imagine what quality of songs we would get if the movie directors decided to compose the music themselves. A few directors have done even that and here is one example where the song turned out to be great! But the director cannot and should not do everything, and I feel, the same applies to the music director as well.

In Kollywood, many music directors routinely sing their own songs. I am not giving any examples because there are many many songs with excellent music, but with average voices. I am sure you can recollect a few, or just browse the latest releases and you’re bound to find a few.

I don’t know how the movie directors even approve of this, but I think it’s time this silly trend stops. It’s unfair to professional singers who have trained for years to sing well. What do you think?
