The Story of Two Monks and The Power of Leadership Decisiveness

As an executive leadership coach, I sometimes use storytelling with my clients to make a point. Sometimes, the stories are more profound than any coaching or guiding I could do. Last week, one of my clients heard the story of two Zen Monks and it had a profound impact on his leadership.

The story goes as follows, there were two Zen monks who are on a journey together. As they are walking, they come to a river and see an elderly woman who is struggling to cross it by herself. The older monk takes the woman on his shoulders and carries her across the river, setting her down on the other side. The woman continues on her way and the monks continue on their journey.

After several miles, the older monk notices that the younger monk is troubled and asks him what’s wrong. The younger monk explains that, according to the tenets of their beliefs, they are not supposed to touch women and yet the older monk had carried the woman across the river. It was clear that the younger monk was very angry and couldn’t let it go. The older monk then said to the younger monk; “I left the woman at the riverside a long time ago, why are you still carrying her with you?”

You might be wondering why I told him this story, this story is important because it shows that leaders must be willing to make tough decisions and take bold actions. In the same stroke, they must learn to be decisive.

There are many situations in which leaders must be decisive in order to effectively guide and lead their followers. Here are some examples of when we need leadership decisiveness:

When faced with a difficult decision or challenge: Leaders must be decisive and take action when situation are difficult or challenging. This could be a decision related to a business strategy, a change in company policy, or a response to a crisis.

When confronted with opposition or resistance from their followers: Leaders must be able to stand firm and take action when moving people forward. This could involve addressing concerns or objections from followers, or making difficult decisions that may not be popular with everyone.

When faced with a limited amount of time or resources: Leaders must be able to prioritize and make decisions about how to best use these resources to achieve the group’s goals. This could involve making tough choices about which projects or initiatives to pursue, or deciding how to allocate limited resources to different parts of the organization.

When faced with uncertainty or ambiguity: Leaders must be able to make informed decisions and take action based on the best information available when things are uncertain. This could involve making decisions based on incomplete information, or taking calculated risks in order to move the group forward.

When carrying baggage that’s infringing on the organization: Leaders need to be decisive and let go of their own “baggage” and focus on the present and future. This means they must be determined to let go of past events or experiences that may be holding them back, and instead, they must focus on the task at hand.

As leaders, we all have choices to make. Sometimes, these choices can be difficult and may go against what we want for ourselves as individuals. However, being decisive and taking bold action is often necessary for the success of the organization.

As leaders, we must be willing to do what is best for the company, even if it goes against our own personal interests. By being decisive and making difficult choices, we can show our followers that we are capable of making the tough decisions that are necessary to guide the organization forward.

Lead From Within: Leaders are bold, brave, and they know that being decisive isn’t always easy. But they rise to the occasion and make the tough choices that are necessary for the success for the greater good.

Showing Appreciation: How to Let Your Employees Know They Matter

a

Showing appreciation to your employees is crucial for maintaining a positive and productive workplace. It’s a simple way to let your team know that their hard work and dedication are valued. It can help to boost morale and engagement. But expressing gratitude to your employees isn’t always easy. Therefore, it’s important to do it in a way that feels genuine and heartfelt.

Here are some tips for letting your employees know that you appreciate them.

Communicate appreciation daily: As a leader it is important to make sure to regularly communicate your appreciation for your employees. This can be as simple as thanking them for their hard work and dedication, or recognizing them for a job well done. As a result, consistently expressing gratitude, you can create a culture of appreciation within your organization.

Create a recognition program: As a leader it is useful to implement a recognition program that allows employees to recognize their colleagues for their contributions. This could be as simple as a virtual “thank you” board where employees can post messages of appreciation for their coworkers. Additionally, it could be a more formal program where employees can nominate their colleagues for awards or other forms of recognition. As a result, giving employees the opportunity to recognize their peers, you can create a sense of community and support within your team.

Value growth: As a leader it is vital to recognize individual employees and it’s also important to show appreciation for the team as a whole. This could be as simple as organizing team-building activities or outings, or providing opportunities for professional development and training. As a result, investing in your employees and providing them with the tools and resources they need to succeed, you can show them that you value their growth and development.

Provide a sense of purpose : As a leader it is crucial to provide opportunities for employees to give back to the community. This could be through volunteering opportunities or other charitable initiatives. Not only will this help to build a sense of purpose and fulfillment among your employees. As a result, it can also help to foster a sense of corporate responsibility and social awareness within your organization.

Make it heartfelt: As a leader it’s important to remember that showing appreciation isn’t just about grand gestures or big awards. Sometimes, the simplest gestures can make the biggest difference. Therefore, a handwritten note of thanks, a small gift, or even a simple “thank you” can go a long way in letting your employees know that they matter.

In conclusion, showing appreciation to your employees is essential for maintaining a positive and productive workplace. By regularly expressing gratitude, implementing recognition programs, providing opportunities for growth and development, and showing support for charitable initiatives. You can let your employees know that you value their contributions and that they matter.

Lead From Within: Recognition and appreciation are the most powerful, most human and most effective forms of leadership communication.

Fostering Leadership Excellence: How to Develop Your Team for Success

Leadership excellence is the ability to inspire and motivate others to achieve their best. Successfully developing a leadership team involves providing support, guidance, and opportunities for growth and development.

There are several strategies that leaders can implement to fostering excellence with their team:

Provide training and development opportunities: Providing training and development opportunities can help leaders improve their leadership skills and knowledge. This can include attending workshops or courses on leadership. By doing so, a leader is sending the message that they care about their own development and the development of their team.

Foster a culture of collaboration and open communication: A culture of collaboration and open communication can help leaders feel more comfortable and confident collaborating with others. This can involve promoting collaboration and teamwork, encouraging diverse perspectives, and providing support and resources. By doing so, this helps team members work effectively together, fostering a sense of unity and cooperation.

Practice leadership in real-world scenarios: Leaders can practice their leadership skills in real-world scenarios. This can involve setting up group projects or tasks, facilitating discussions and brainstorming sessions. Thus, seeking out opportunities to lead others towards a shared goal or objective.

Seek feedback and support: Leaders can benefit from seeking feedback and support from others. This can involve asking for feedback from team members or colleagues, seeking guidance from mentors or coaches. As a result, feedback can help leaders achieve leadership excellence.

Reflect and assess progress: Leaders should regularly reflect on their progress and assess their areas of strength and weakness. This can involve setting goals and tracking progress, and seeking feedback from others to identify areas for growth and development. Furthermore, regularly reflecting on their progress can help leaders stay motivated and committed to their leadership development.

Overall, to successfully develop a leadership team, it is important to provide training and development opportunities, foster a culture of collaboration and open communication, practice leadership in real-world scenarios, seek feedback and support, and reflect and assess progress. By implementing these strategies, leaders can improve their leadership skills and foster a more collaborative and productive team environment.

Lead From Within: Leadership excellence is not a singular act; it’s a habit. You do not lead a team to success, you lead a team to excellence.

7 Smart Ways to Identify and Grow Future Leaders

An important part of leadership is identifying and growing future leaders within your organization. Many leaders ignore this important element. They may be too caught up in current priorities or not sure of what to do. In my work as an executive coach, I provide my clients with seven smart steps for developing new leaders:

Get to know your up-and-coming people. Get to know the potential upcoming leaders within your organization, then spend time strengthening those relationships. Remember to cast a wide net and be open to diverse voices and personalities.

Listen to learn. Schedule one-on-one meetings with prospective leaders, and devote most of those meetings to listening and learning. Ask lots of open-ended questions, listen, and follow up with more questions. You’ll learn a lot about them as individuals. And as a bonus, you’ll learn about the challenges and values of the next generation of leaders.

Invest in strong candidates. Once you identify the strongest prospects, make sure they have the resources they need to grow. Help them plan for their future and stick with them as they carry out their plan. Show your confidence and be generous with your knowledge.

Be supportive. Upcoming leaders depend on mentors for support and guidance. Make sure they can always count on you. They may not make the same decisions you would. But as long as their reasoning and analysis are sound, support them in going their own way.

Challenge them. When you give a growing leader a difficult challenge, you’re giving them a chance to shine. Challenges reveal their capabilities and capacities while building critical thinking skills and creativity. They’ll learn new skills and grow their confidence—and the organization will benefit from their fresh thinking and new perspectives.

Give them wider exposure. Remember to familiarize new leaders with the big picture. Help them develop a broad knowledge of your industry as well future possible directions for your organization. This understanding will serve as the foundation for their future decision-making.

Provide mentoring and coaching. Future leaders thrive with lots of mentoring and coaching. They need to know that they can turn to someone for professional advice, guidance and support. Help them feel confident and supported as they take their first steps—and beyond.

Developing future leaders is critical for any organization looking to succeed in the long term. And focusing on leadership development keeps established leaders from becoming stale and satisfied with the status quo. When you help rising leaders develop their skills and confidence, you can know that your leadership and influence will endure far beyond your own career.

Lead From Within: The future of leadership lies within the potential leaders you develop today.

This Is How The Best Leaders Bring Out The Best In Others

Most people think of leadership in terms of influence and power. As an executive leadership coach, I have spent a significant amount of time coaching leaders around the world in learning the truth. At the core of leadership it’s more about the people they lead than their own authority and influence.

Effective leadership is about bringing out the best in others and creating a positive and productive work environment. By helping their team members to grow, develop, and succeed.

Here are a few meaningful and important ways the best leaders bring out the best in others:

Believe in who they are: To bring out the best in others, it’s important to believe in who they are as individuals. This means recognizing and valuing their unique talents, skills, and abilities, and helping them to develop and grow.

Boost their confidence: To bring out the best in others, it’s essential that you boost their confidence. This involves providing encouragement, support, and recognition to help employees feel valued, appreciated, and capable.

Set high expectations: To bring out the best in others, it’s imperative that you set high expectations. This means setting clear, challenging, and achievable goals for their team. By doing so, leaders show their people that they believe in their abilities and potential, and that they are capable of achieving great things.

Speak the truth: To bring out the best in others, it’s essential that you speak the truth. Because honesty and authenticity can inspire and motivate people to strive for excellence and to be their best selves. Additionally, by speaking the truth, leaders can provide constructive feedback and support that can help employees to develop and grow.

Provide guidance: To bring out the best in others, it’s crucial that you provide support and guidance. This means being available and approachable.  Additionally, it means offering help and advice in the skills and knowledge needed to succeed.

Positive work environment: To bring out the best in others, it’s necessary that you create a positive work environment. This means fostering a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement, and providing resources and support to help employees succeed. By creating a positive work environment, leaders can attract and retain top talent, and can promote a culture of excellence and success.

Bottom line, great leaders are distinguished by their ability to bring out the best in others. By recognizing and nurturing potential, they inspire greatness in those around them.

Lead From Within: Bringing out the best in others is a crucial aspect of great leadership.

How Too Much Grit Can Derail Your Leadership Success

“Grit” is defined as passion and perseverance towards long-term goals, and it is considered a crucial ingredient for success. Research by Angela Duckworth, a psychology professor at the University of Pennsylvania, has found that grit is a better predictor of success than talent or intelligence. However, I have found that some leaders may be too gritty, and it is costing them in their leadership success.

As a leadership executive coach, I have seen too much grit causing derailment in leadership in the following ways:

Burnout: When leaders are too gritty, they may be at risk of burning out. This can happen when they don’t know when to give up and keep trying to win losing battles, even when their persistence is costing them in terms of their well-being. Therefore, leaders should learn to recognize the signs of burnout and take appropriate steps to prevent it, such as setting boundaries, delegating tasks, and taking regular breaks.

Clouded judgment: Excessive grit can also cloud a leader’s judgment. When leaders are so wrapped up in their determination to succeed, they may lose sight of the bigger picture and make decisions that are not in the best interest of the company or their team. Therefore, leaders should seek out different perspectives and input from others to help them make more informed decisions.

Loss of identity: When leaders are so wrapped up in their grit, they may lose the truth of who they are. They may become obsessed with who they should be, rather than who they are. This can lead to feelings of inadequacy and loss of self-worth. Therefore, leaders should take time to reflect on their values and goals and make sure that they are aligned with their true selves.

High risk of depression: Leaders who are too gritty may also be at risk of depression. They may feel overwhelmed by the pressure to succeed, and this can take a toll on their mental health. Therefore, leaders should make sure to prioritize their mental and emotional well-being and seek support if needed.

To conclude, grit is an important quality for leaders to have, as it drives them towards achieving their goals and pushing through challenges. However, too much grit can have negative consequences, such as burnout, clouded judgment, loss of identity, and high risk of depression. Therefore, leaders should strive to balance grit with adaptability and flexibility, and seek feedback and support to help them navigate their careers.

Lead From Within: Being gritty is not enough. It must be balanced with adaptability, self-awareness, and the ability to change course.

How the Best Leaders Help their Remote Employees Thrive

As a leader, it’s important to support and engage your remote employees in order to create a thriving work environment. Here are five ways to do that:

Encourage collaboration: When it comes to remote employees being successful, the most effective leaders know great things happen when employees work together. Therefore, it’s important to foster a culture of collaboration among your remote employees. This can be done through regular team meetings, assigning team projects, and encouraging open communication and sharing of ideas.

Create deeper connections: When it comes to having remote employees flourishing, connection is vitally important. Therefore, take time to schedule social events and activities that allow your team to connect and build relationships outside of work. This can help to create a sense of community and belonging among your employees.

Celebrate the little and big wins: When it comes to having remote employees developing, recognize and celebrate achievements. It doesn’t  matter how big or small. This helps to create a positive work culture and motivates your team to continue performing at their best. Make sure to call out and recognize the great work being done by your employees, and celebrate their successes together as a team.

Align your culture: When it comes to having remote employees striving, it’s important to align your team around the new way of being. This means amplifying the great work being done, but also ensuring that all employees are aligned with the new meaning of your company values.

Build the new future: When it comes to having remote employees happy, ask them what they want. Let them design and build the workplace of the future. This not only helps to engage and motivate your employees. Additionally, it gives them a sense of ownership and control over their work environment.

By implementing these strategies, you can help your remote employees thrive and succeed in their roles. As a leader, it’s important to engage and support your team in order to create a positive and productive work environment.
