Hey, Look! I'm On Patreon (And Elsewhere on the Net!)

Now that I'm a semi-professional author (meaning that I still need a day job), I've decided to open up and start a Patreon page! If you're looking to join an exclusive community and get some great perks, please head over to http://www.patreon.com/gordondymowski and become a monthly sponsor!

Of course, I'm not a big shot like Scott Adams, the guy who created Dilbert. He's a bit touchy, especially when confronted on his statements. So learn how you, too, can get blocked on Twitter by Scott Adams...

Some Words of Inspiration For the Fourth of July

(Originally posted by Wil Stenberg on Facebook; later misattributed to Henry Rollins. Worth sharing if only to give credit where credit is due...and yes, I agree with every word, why do you ask?)

=============================

I hate “we’re fucked.”

I mean, I don’t want to shame anyone who has said it, thought it, or posted it. I have too. But as a philosophy, as a statement of belief, I hate it. Because it means you’ve given up.

We are absolutely NOT fucked.

Things are so bad. This country has...

Where Stories Come From: 1950s WESTERN ROUNDUP - Knights of the Silver Cross

You would think that for a pulp writer, I would work well when writing Westerns. After all, they're merely historical fiction...with a heck of a lot of tropes. Many of which are...whoo, boy, are tricky and possibly problematic. Plus, there's tons of research...and anyone who tells you "too much research can ruin storytelling" hasn't ever really told a story worth telling.

But I managed it once with "Cowboy of the Dakotas" for Pulpternative - creating an alternate history for a well-known...

One of the most exciting periods in American History was that of the Wild West. Tales of gunfights and outlaws have captivated the imagination of readers since that era, but this period of lawlessness and excitement held particular sway over...

Maybe you may not have realized it yet, but the current political state of affairs, well....John Oliver said it best:

Where Stories Come From: THE JOY OF JOE

Now I know what you're thinking, and yes...I have been away. Freelance work has been pretty steady, my life is...well, it's there. I've been getting back into the swing of a semi-regular life, and have focused more time on the other blog, discussing comedy stars and free speech issues as well as recent celebrity passings.
But sometimes, I get so busy with the work/writing grind that I actually forget that I write things that will later be published...and they usually come from the most innocuo...

Fourteen Years of Blogging Pleasure

Vintage Ouija Board Ad
To be completely honest, I never thought I would take blogging this far...

After all, most of my time is spent writing for Chicago Now's One Cause At a Time (with recent posts on Opulent Credit Builders and the Paschen Scholars program receiving a lot of traffic - Google Analytics doesn't lie, you know), and between that and my writing (pulp stories and academic papers don't write themselves), my time writing for this blog has been...well, sporadic in nature.

Sure, I have some good re...

Living the Freelance Writing Lifestyle

Ironically, things are starting to settle after a year of relative chaos.

Much of it has been taking some healthy self-care steps, but I'm in a relatively stable routine. I have two freelance writing clients (and I'm always working on expanding my professional services) and have been stepping away from some great commitments (like Zone 4) and some which are more toxic (which I'll blog about at a later date).

But a new income and caring for Mom has meant that I've been able to spread my win...
