Qkr! – Pay for food and drinks from your Smartphone

Qkr! - Pay for food and drinks from your SmartphoneEvery Friday I share one of my favourite finds of the week — a website, tool or an app that has impressed me.

My Friday Favourite this week is Qkr! – Pay for food and drinks from your Smartphone.

What is it?

Qkr! with Masterpass is an app from Mastercard that allows you to quickly split your bill in selected restaurants.

How can it help me?

You can use the Qkr! app at restaurants such as Zizzi, Wagamama, Ask Italian and Byron Hamburgers.

When it comes to paying the bill, you first scan the barcode of the meal receipt. You can then split the payment of the bill between fellow Qkr! users and/or pay the bill automatically from any credit or debit cards you have linked to the Qkr! app.

You can link as many credit cards as you want with your Qkr! app, allowing you to choose which card you want to use when it’s time to pay for your meal.

Future features for Qkr! include the ability to order food to your seat at the cinema, and to manage payments for school meals.

How much does it cost?

Qkr! is free to download and use.

Grid-It – Organise your gadgets, chargers, cables and headphones

Grid-It - Organise your gadgetsEvery Friday I share one of my favourite finds of the week — a website, tool or an app that has impressed me.

My Friday Favourite this week is Grid-It – Organise your gadgets, chargers, cables and headphones.

What is it?

Grid-It is a rubberised woven elastic objection retention system to organise your gadgets. It is produced by Cocoon.

How can it help me?

For anyone who travels with gadgets and a mountain of chargers, cables and other accessories – typically chucked into a suitcase or backpack, then Grid-It is for you.

Grid-It allows you to organise your gadget items firmly in place using rubberised elastic bands, and easily access them when needed.

I’ve found Grid-It really useful to store my Podcast equipment, charging cables and other gadget accessories while travelling. Rather than fishing around in my rucksack for items, I pull the Grid-It panel out and I can then easily access the cable or gadget I want.

Chip – Save money automatically and feel good about it

Chip - Save money automatically and feel good about itEvery Friday I share one of my favourite finds of the week — a website, tool or an app that has impressed me.

My Friday Favourite this week is Chip – Save Money Automatically and feel good about it.

What is it?

Chip is an app for iOS and Android which does all the hard work to make saving money easy.

The Chip app connects (in read-only mode) to your current account.

Chip then uses an Artificial Intelligence (AI) powered algorithm to calculate how much you can afford to save and then puts the money away in a savings account for you automatically.

How can it help me?

If you struggle to build savings, then Chip is a powerful and painless way to squirrel money away.

I’ve been using Chip (and its rival, Plum) for a few months now, and have been surprised at the amount of money it has saved for me, all while not noticing the funds it has automatically taken. Useful!

My Friday Favourite this week is Yoti – Prove your identity online and in person.

What is it?

Yoti is an app for Android and iOS that can help you prove your identity digitally.

How can it help me?

It doesn’t make sense to carry around your driving license or passport on nights out or to send photocopies of documents to prove our identity.

Yoti is an app that allows you to add your identity documents to your Yoti app and then swap your Yoti with the people you meet and do business with, so you know exactly who you’re dealing with.

Yoti uses bank grade security, and the Yoti app allows you to use biometrics to log on securely.

Firefox Send – Private Encrypted File Sharing

Firefox sendEvery Friday I share one of my favourite finds of the week — a website, tool or an app that has impressed me.

My Friday Favourite this week is Firefox Send – Private Encrypted File Sharing

What is it?

Firefox Send is a service that allows you to upload files from your web-browser and send them to recipients privately via encrypted file sharing.

How can it help me?

I’ve written before about why email is not a good medium through which to send file attachments (read my article on “How to send large attachments via email“).

While email was never meant as a service for exchanging files, many routinely use it to send file attachments. These files can end up in the hands of unintended recipients and multiple versions of files can end up being bounced backwards and forwards, causing confusion.

Firefox Send allows you to send files through a safe, private, and encrypted link that automatically expires to ensure your file does not remain online forever.
