Setup and Excerpt: Mule Cooper and his son, Billy, set fire to Arbor Rose, Sophia’s beloved childhood home. During the attack, Sophia tripped and struck her head on the bedpost. Gavin carried her to safety after he killed Billy and his mangy sidekicks. Now…he returns to Sophia lying beneath an oak tree.
Gavin knelt beside Sophia and pulled her into his arms. Deathly white beneath the bright orange sky. Her breaths were shallow, the pulse at her neck weak. “Don’t leave me, Sophia. Please fight!”
Next to him, Ricochet whined and looked at Gavin with a bleakness he didn’t think possible in a dog. The hound’s ears flattened, and he jerked his head toward the long dirt road leading to the manor. Gavin tensed.
“Lawdy, Massah Gavin, we seen the red sky a mile off.” Brister hobbled forward, his cane working overtime. “What done happen?”
“Billy Cooper and his friends.”
Nap dropped to his knees, wide-eyed. “Miss Sophia.” A hand fell across his lips. “What they done to my lamb?”
“She hit her head on the bedpost when the fire broke out.” Sick with worry, Gavin turned to Brister. “She’s been out for an hour and her pulse is weak.”
“What’s we gonna do, Massah Gavin?” Brister whined. “She need a doctah.”
“Christ!” He glanced over his shoulder. The manor hissed smoke in its final lap, and the barn had been reduced to ashes. “The horses took off across the pasture, find them. If you catch Baby Moon, Mischief will follow.” He added, “Take Ricochet and he’ll herd them in.”
“Yes, sir.” Ol’ Nap scratched his head. “Then what?”
“Does old Doc Jenkins still practice out of his house in Fredericksburg?”
“Yassah,” Brister said.
Nap took in a quick hiss of air. “They’s blood all over the hound’s neck.”
“He didn’t like the way Billy talked.”
“He dead?”
“He wasn’t looking good the last time I saw him.”
Ol’ Nap’s broad face twisted with fear. “His Pa come for you now, Massah Gavin.”
Gavin’s voice spewed arctic air. “If Sophia dies, he won’t have to come for me.” Misery, acute and raw, twisted in his gut. Sophia dead? He would put a gun to his head.
Brister narrowed his eyes, leaned in and inspected the jagged tear on his cheek. “You best let me stitch up that cut.”
“I’ll have Doc Jenkins look at it.”
Her pain-filled eyes loomed as Gavin tossed a ragged blanket— scrounged up from the floor of the smokehouse—over Mischief’s back. He grabbed a handful of the mare’s mane, hoisted himself up and took Sophia from Brister’s arms. The soft moan from her lips gave Gavin hope.
Ricochet pranced around the horse. “No! You stay here.”
The dog whined and lowered his massive body to the ground.
“You can’t come this time.”
Ricochet barked.
“Do your damn job and protect what’s left of Arbor Rose.”
“He ain’t gonna stay, Massah Gavin.” Brister shook his head. “No, siree, soon as you a mile down that road, he gonna take off like he after a fox.”
“Tie him up, and tie up that colt too.”
“Yassuh.”
“One more thing.” Gavin tightened his grip on Sophia. “Don’t sleep in the smokehouse or in any building tonight. Cooper will come, and when he does, you don’t want to be trapped.”
Ol’ Nap nodded and grabbed the rope around Ricochet’s neck. Gavin dug his heels into the mare’s sides and disappeared down the long dirt road.

Hope, can you share with our readers about yourself?
Certainly. I live above the shop of an herbal apothecary I own in Carolan Springs, Colorado. I’m also a medical doctor.. My mother, Faith, lives with me and I care for her. I’m an only child and I moved back to care for my mother when she started having health issues. I love living in a small town and I love Colorado. I’m in the perfect place for the life I want to live and the work I want to do. I have a new intern, Autumn, so that’s helping me to expand into other areas of interest.
You’ve recently opened a bed-and-breakfast with your friends. Can you tell us about that?
My father, Ralph Rogers, passed away, and I inherited his house. I didn’t know for years that Ralph was my father, so it surprised me when he left me the home in his will. The house is a huge, old Victorian that probably stood by itself for many years before the other homes went up around it. Anne, who has become a good friend, and Kandi, another friend, talked about the possibility of opening a bed-and-breakfast in the house. As they live on either side of the house, it works well for them. Anne has written and taught about suburban homesteading while Kandi is a great cook. Plus, I get to do teaching on herbs through workshops we hold there. It’s called the Brandywine Inn as Ralph was a big fan of Brandywine tomatoes. In the summer we open it up primarily for tourists and those who come for the homesteading fair. Then we can hold workshops in the spring and fall.
Tell us about where you live.
I live in the small mountain town of Carolan Springs in Colorado. (Don’t try to find it on a map as it’s only in the author’s imagination). I have to say the weather here in Colorado takes some getting used to. There can be a snowstorm in the morning and by the afternoon, lots of bright sunshine and warm temperatures. The key is to wear layers at any time of the year! I finally learned that after living here for a few years. I’m excited about spring because it’s that shoulder season when it’s normally crisp morning and sunny days. It’s a great time for hiking and seeing all the early wildflowers popping up and sometimes even mushrooms. We’re incorporating hike opportunities for our guests.
Can you tell us a bit more about Carolan Springs and its inhabitants?
It’s a fairly small town—around 3500 people—and just like everywhere else, you have many characters. My shop is along the main street filled with little shops and everyone is usually nice though we have some cranky folks just like any other town. I think Sheriff Carson and Anne should just get on with it and become a couple because they’re both so stubborn that they’d be a perfect match. But don’t tell them I said anything. Problem is they’ll probably end up with others. Oh well, what can you do? I’m sure you’ll find out more about the town’s residents in future stories.
You mentioned the author, what can you tell us about her?
Well, she was born in Chicago but spent most of her life in Texas—around the San Antonio area. But just like me, she loves Colorado’s mountains. She grows and uses herbs and making her own tinctures, tonics, and salves. She loves the basic edible herbs like basil, cilantro, dill, and others. A few of her favorite medicinal herbs are astragalus and osha for tinctures along with comfrey she uses in salves. In addition to writing mysteries, she’s also written nonfiction books. She loves everything about being a suburban homesteader or what some call backyard farming. She’s a certified permaculture designer, has chickens and beehives and gardens of various types.
Hope, can you tell us what’s next for the series?
We’ve all been talking about getting beehives for the property, so we can offer honey to our guests. Having bees on the property will also help with all the gardens we want to install. I wouldn’t be surprised to see one of those being a part of the next book in the series.
Anything else you’d like to share?
I can’t think of anything. Though my mother (Faith) says she has a bad feeling about our opening weekend at the bed-and-breakfast. She has second-sight so that’s a bit disconcerting that she says she has a bad feeling. But I’m sure it’s nothing. I hope.
Marie’s Elderberry Cordial Recipe
Items Needed
Quart canning jar with lid
Funnel (large mouth)
Wooden spoon
Label or masking tape
Sharpie
Cheesecloth (optional)
Strainer (optional)
Decorative Bottle (optional)
Ingredients
Amounts needed
Comments
Elderberries
1.25 cup dried or 2 cups fresh
For fresh, remove from stems.
Brandy
3 cups
Can also use other alcohol but brandy is most commonly used.
Honey
¼ to ½ cup (or to taste)
Vegans or those who don’t have access to good local raw honey can substitute maple syrup. Acquiring local honey will provide your cordial with its own unique flavor.
Optional
Cinnamon stick
One
Flavor along with Antioxidants and Anti-Inflammatory properties
Rosehips
¼ cup
Extra Vitamin C
Ginger
1-2 tbsp grated fresh ginger
Flavor along with Antioxidants
Instructions
Place elderberries (and any optional ingredients, if using) into quart jar.
Cover with brandy.
Add honey.
Stir with wooden spoon or put lid on and shake.
Place in dark, cool space (usually a cabinet will do) for three to four weeks.
If desired, strain with cheesecloth and using a strainer, put into a decorative bottle.
Or you can leave ingredients in jar.
In winter take 1-2 tbsp daily for immune-boosting. If ill, take 3-4 tbsp (basically a shot glass) a few times a day until symptoms improve. This cordial can also be used as a base for poor-tasting tinctures such as osha.
Can last for a year with fresh berries and longer if made with dried berries—if you have it that long!
Notes
Elderberry is a wonderful plant to have in your yard or on your property. It has many medicinal benefits and uses. The elderberry plant most commonly associated with immune-boosting and flu-fighting properties is the dark berry plant (Elderberry Sambucus Nigra). Elder flower is also used in elixirs, teas and food. Elder was the International Herb Association’s Herb of the Year in 2013. It’s usually harvested in September.

My thoughts
A True Cowboy Christmas by Caitlin Crews is book One in the Cold River Ranch Series. Gray is your typical father with a teenager he is trying to raise. His siblings along with himself just buried their father and there is not love lost there. They are trying to keep the ranch going.
Abby has always wanted Gray from the time she was a young girl. She can’t say no to Gray, so will this marriage of convenience lead to more?
Gray doesn’t want to become his dad and at times it is a bit much. His first wife’s affairs really did a number on him and I can see why he was the way he was. Abby Has some issues too and these two come to work things out. I think she was more or a doormat for Gray to run over time and time again.
Glad the holiday sprit worked on these two.

“Why would you try to tell me that chemistry doesn’t matter? Of course it does.”
“I’m not saying it doesn’t matter. But sheer stubborn- ness matters more.” He heard the intensity in his voice, but did nothing to temper it. “If people want to stay married, they do. If they want that marriage to be a good one, they work on it and make it that way. It’s not rocket science. It doesn’t require your online profiles. You don’t need to get matched on your smart phone. You make a commit- ment to someone, then you keep it. It’s as simple and as hard as that.”
He watched in fascination as her hands curled into fists at her sides.
“I appreciate that you have experience being married, and that gives you a platform to make sweeping state- ments,” she said, her voice low, as if she was fighting back her own intensity. “That’s great. But you’re missing that I’m not interested in the state of marriage in a general sense. I’m telling you I am not going to marry someone I have no chemistry with. That has nothing to do with me being stubborn, not stubborn, or insufficiently committed. It’s actually all about the fact that I’m not staggering around in a grief-induced daze, proposing marriage to people I’ve never looked at twice before in my whole life.” That should have annoyed him, because he wasn’t dazed. Amos had been a mean, unhealthy old man. His death hadn’t been a real surprise. Gray wasn’t sure he was
grieving him so much as the father Amos had never been, and he knew he wasn’t crazy with it. But he couldn’t seem to lose his grin, especially when he moved closer to her.
Because when he did, she lost that scowl. Her eyes went wide, that cute flush brightened up her face again, and she had to tip her head back to look at him. Not as much as some of the other girls he’d dated had, as she’d pointed out. Gray liked that too. He didn’t have to hunker over her.
She was . . . right there.
He had an urge and went with it. He reached over and curled his fingers around her ponytail, then pulled them gently along the length of it.
And figured the chemistry question was answered by the way her breath went shuddery.
But he didn’t end it there.
“If I’m following all this,” he said, his drawl low. Thick. “You don’t actually have any objections. You think we maybe ought to date first. You’re worried we don’t have chemistry. But at the end of the day, you’re not opposed to the idea.”
“It’s crazy. And I’m worried that you’re crazy, in a clin- ical sense.”
“If you agree to marry me, I’ll take you on a date or two. If that’s what you want.” His hand was still tangled in her hair, and he was close enough now that he could catch her scent. Gray breathed deep. She smelled like rosemary. And something that reminded him of the pies she and her grandmother had brought over the day after the funeral, warm and good. Right. “But we can settle the other question right here.”
“What do you mean . . . ?”
Gray didn’t wait. He didn’t answer her question, half stammered out with her hazel eyes so wide they looked like summer gold.
He used his free hand to cup her cheek, flushed and smooth beneath his palm. Then he bent—only a little, which struck him as unexpectedly hot—to take her mouth with his.
He felt her tremble. And there was something about the way she melted into him as their lips touched, then brushed, as if she was being pulled by some kind of magnetic force he was half certain he could feel himself.
Gray had only meant to kiss her to make a point. The way a gentleman might, not that he’d ever met too many gentlemen out here where the mountains and the land were the only things that mattered.
But Abby’s lips were soft and velvety beneath his. And she made a tiny sound in the back of her throat that he could feel like a flickering flame.
Before he knew it, Gray was angling his head to one side and licking his way into her mouth.
As if he couldn’t help himself.
And everything got hot. Bright. Impossible.
This was Abby Douglas. Abby Douglas. There was something deliciously wrong about it being Abby that made it hotter, wilder.
It rolled in him and made a joke of him imagining he was in control of any of this. Of her.
Of this sudden storm of sensation that would have taken him off his feet, if that didn’t mean he would have had to let go of her.

what the hell to do with all this chemistry—so much it was like a lightning storm and he kept getting hit—with a woman he’d never paid the slightest attention to until his father’s funeral.
The fact that the front door had opened penetrated the heat and fog that was swirling around him.

Ellison Russell has Cabot Cove Syndrome. Like Jessica Fletcher, she finds bodies here, there, and everywhere.
Most people don’t find bodies. Not even one.
To follow a character who does, especially one who’s not a police detective or private investigator, requires the suspension of disbelief.
I thought about that a lot when I began this writing journey. Would readers who met Ellison, an affluent, artistic widow, care enough about her and her family to overlook the fact there was no reasonable explanation for all those bodies?
Back Stabbers marks the eighth book in the Country Club Murders. And, per usual, Ellison encounters a body (I like to start books with bodies—it gives the first chapter some ooomph). Per usual, she finds the body someplace completely unexpected.
Part of the fun in writing the series comes from finding new and surprising places for Ellison to stumble over death (a swimming pool, under the stands at a high school football game, a haunted house, in the study with a revolver, a commercial freezer…the list goes on and on). Hopefully finding those bodies is part of the fun for readers as well
