Collection of Lost First World War Poems To Be Released 100 Years On
LONDON, OCTOBER 19, 2018 – A collection of lost poems from The Great War by the late Alick Lewis Ellis, a paramedic in WWI, is to be released as a book by his family.
Alick’s notebook of poems was anonymously handed into Dan Hill at the Herts at War Society in 2017, with a note saying it had been found during a house renovation and ‘may be of interest to you’.
Dan tracked down Alick’s closest living relatives from the name and address at the front of ‘Field Dressings’, through the village Historical Society with whom the family still has a connection. ‘Field Dressings’ then made its final journey back to the Ellis family on Wednesday 26th July 2017, where it was presented to the family by Dan Hill.
Working with the Self-Publishing Partnership, the family has turned the notebook into a unique record of one man’s experience of the Great War. They have journeyed to France and Belgium to revisit the places Alick would have been to and linked the experiences of their great-uncle to the lives of veterans today.
‘Field Dressings By Stretcher Bearer’ will be officially released on November 2nd at a launch event at The Museum of Military Medicine in Aldershot. The notes and poems chronicle the scenes he witnessed on the front line.
“This has been a journey of discovery for all our family and it hands on a tangible legacy to the next generation. In this centenary year of the Armistice, we are thrilled that it is one of many creative pieces that ensure we will never forget those who paid …and those who still pay…the ultimate sacrifice.” Pat Russell, Great-Niece of Alick.
During more than 3 years of active service on the Western Front in World War 1, Alick’s first-hand experience of the horrors of battle at Gommecourt, The Somme, Arras, Ypres and Cambrai, led him to produce a series of compelling poems that will trigger an entire spectrum of emotions in the reader.
While many poems reflect the sadness and pain that comes from witnessing so much death and futile suffering, Alick’s work shows he remained full of admiration for his fellow soldiers. In others, the gallows humour of the trenches will make the reader smile at times, while the hope and optimism of his few post war poems will be tinged with the sadness our historical knowledge allows.
The book will be raising money for two amazing charities – Veterans With Dogs and Combat Stress and it will be released on November 2nd. More info: https://www.fielddressings.co.uk

About Alick.
Alick Lewis Ellis was born on 19th January 1887 to John and Susan Ellis of Terrington St. Clement in Norfolk, England. One of 10 children, he had 2 elder and one younger sisters and 3 elder and 3 younger brothers.
Little is known of his early life, but it is thought that he attended the local Terrington School with his brothers and sisters where he received a good but unremarkable education. The Ellis family had for several generations been shopkeepers, butchers or grocers and his parents were no different.
By 1911, Alick appeared to be following in the family tradition and was registered on the census as a self-employed grocer aged 24 in Greenhithe in Kent.
He was resident there with his widowed sister in law May Ellis formerly married to Walter Percy Ellis, one of his older brothers. His younger brother Charles Wesley Ellis also lived in Greenhithe and was a grocer’s assistant.
Alick volunteered for Territorial Army service on 4th February 1915 with the 3rd London Field Ambulance of the Royal Army Medical Corps (RAMC), part of the 56th (1st London) Division, who were based at the Duke of York’s Barracks in Chelsea.
In October 1921, he was best man at his brother Clarence (Kal) Ellis’ wedding.

Early one gray November morning, retired Lighthouse Cove, NY police chief, Edmund DeCleryk, finds Emily Bradford’s body on the beach at the base of the bluff where the local museum and historical society stands. At the same time, a break-in has been reported at the museum, and Emily’s coat and purse are found hanging on a peg in the museum’s gift shop where she worked. Was her death the result of a burglary gone bad or something more sinister?
When the police chief is called out of town for a family emergency, he hires Ed, now working as a criminal consultant, to assist deputy police chief, Carrie Ramos, with the murder investigation. After several leads don’t pan out, the chief, now back in Lighthouse Cove, decides to close the case. Confident that with more time the murder can be solved, Ed is determined to continue investigating on his own, with encouragement from his wife, Annie the museum’s executive director.
One morning while in the basement of the museum, the couple discovers a copy of a map dated 1785, and Ed’s instincts tell him it may be connected to Emily’s death. On a hunch, he and Annie travel to Toronto, Canada, where he learns of the original map and a manuscript written in 1847 that were unearthed during an archaeological dig. The manuscript contains information about a ship that capsized during a fierce storm on Lake Ontario — in 1785. Now Ed has clues as to why the murder occurred, but he still doesn’t know who committed the crime. Or does he?

Comes a Specter by Keta Diablo, #review #giveaway
Blurb
Six months ago, Anya Fleming’s ten- year-old son, Willie-boy, found his father hanging in the barn. Traumatized over his father’s suicide, the boy hasn’t spoken a word since. Now, Willie-boy has come down with a grave, unknown illness and there’s only one man who can save him, Sutter Sky, a learned Blackfoot shaman known as Yellow Smoke—a shaman who was once deeply in love with Anya.
But Fate had other plans for Anya and Sutter—she was forced to marry Lewis Fleming, a cruel man who berated her night and day, and brokenhearted Sutter immersed himself in the mystical customs and beliefs of his People and became a shaman
As if Anya didn’t have enough to deal with after her husband’s death and her son’s illness, an evil, sinister ghost is terrorizing their ranch. Anya is convinced the spirit is Lewis, who apparently isn’t done making her life miserable.
When she turns to Yellow Smoke for help, will he put side his bitterness and save Willie-boy? And can the renowned shaman dispel the powerful ghost from their lives and send him back to Hades?

My thoughts
Anya has been living on a ranch with her son Willie-boy, her husband, Lewis and ranch hand, Cobb. Lewis dies by hanging himself in the barn after driving and carrying on like a mad man. He was abusive and down right mean to Anya. He knew her son was not his. Six months later Willie-boy still doesn’t talk from finding Lewis that day.
Her son becomes ill and leaves Cobb to take care of him while she goes off and gets a shaman named Yellow Smoke or as she knows him as Sutter. Not only her son being sick but they have a ghost that is terrorizing them all. Will he help them?
I love ghost stories and western romance. I liked the native quotes at the beginning of each chapter. Keta’s writing as she knows how to tell a story in which the reader stays glued to the pages. You will be on the edge of your seat with the ghost and Anya and her friend Sutter. The characters were well done the plot was exceptional.

Interview
Keta: First of all, thank you so much for hosting my latest Western Romance Ghost story, Comes A Specter. Your generosity is much appreciated.
Tell us a little about yourself.
Keta: I live in the Midwest part of the United States on six acres of gorgeous woodland. When I’m not writing or gardening I love to commune with nature. A pair of barn owls returns to the property every year to birth their young and show them off in the high branches of the oak trees. Nothing more adorable than these white fluffy babies with heart-shaped faces. A lifelong animal lover, I devote my time and support to the local animal shelter. Emma LaPounce, a rescued feline, has been my furry companion for the last ten years.
I’m an award-winning and best-selling author who writes in several genres: Western Romance, Historical Romance, Paranormal Romance and Contemporary Romance. In a past life, I wrote Gay Romance. My books have received numerous accolades, including RWA contest finalist, Authors After Dark finalist, Top Pick of the Month and Recommended Review from top review sites, and Best Romance Finalist from The Independent Author Network.
Ps: For some strange reason, ghosts often show up in my stories, no matter the genre.
Have you always wanted to be an author?
Keta: Oh, no. My mother, now 91 years young, reminds me that I always wanted to be number 1) a boy (I had four brothers), number 2) professional equestrian (course I called it a cowgirl).
Tell us a little about the last/latest book you’ve written
Keta: See above in my Author Bio – for some strange reason ghosts always show up in my stories. No different in Comes A Specter, Book 2, Ghostland Series. Several reviewers said they loved the book, but the ghost scared the bejeebers out of them. Gee, I wasn’t scared.
Anyway, I didn’t even know I was writing about all these ghosts. One day, as I was going through my back list of books, I said, “Oh. My. Gosh. Keta!! You write about ghosts all the time.” Read some of my blurbs and you’ll see what I mean. No matter what genre I choose, somehow a ghost shows up. I used to see them—ghosts—when I was a toddler, but that’s another story for another day. Maybe subconsciously, that’s why they keep showing up in my stories.
Where did you get the inspiration for this particular book?
Keta: Let’s see, where were we? Oh, yeah…inspiration for Comes A Specter. I love Western Romance, and since I have such a penchant for dead people, er, I mean those who have crossed over, I created sort of a new sub-genre, Western Romance Ghost Stories. I love writing about cowboys, cowgirls, horses, ranches, rodeos, and…did I mention translucent spirits?
On average how long does it take it for you to write a book?
Keta: That depends on many factors. First, a writer has to be at the top of her/his game physically and mentally to pull this off. Second, she/he has to create a great plot and well-developed characters (no cookie-cutter walk-ons). Third, he/she must plant their butt in the chair and write, write every day, even if you have to pull the words out of the air. Better to have gibberish at times than a blank page, right? Fourth, it depends on whether one is writing a novella or a novel. A novella, two months; a full-length novel 4-5 months. Caveat: Keta is a slow writer compared to many others.
Do you have any unpublished/unfinished scripts?
Keta: Yes, we all have those. Some I keep under the bed, never to see the light of day. Others are sitting on my computer and flash me now and then to finish them.
What types of books do you read?
Keta: Across many genres, but never romance when I’m writing romance. Thrillers, suspense, angels/demons, Native American fiction, and small town contemporary (serious stuff). I hardly ever read humorous. I bet that doesn’t surprise you coming from a person who saw ghosts as a child, huh?
What books are you reading right now?
Freefall (Kristen Heitzmann)
The Dead Game (Suzanne Leist)
and…1,697 waiting for me on my Paperwhite Kindle (sad)
Which are your three favorite books of all time?
Keta: To Kill A Mockingbird, Man On Fire, Gone With the Wind, Legends of the Fall.
Do you/have you ever read a copy of your book after it has been published?
Keta: Gosh, no. I read it so many times while writing it; I’d get bored to death with the same old, same old. LOL.
What advice would you give to an aspiring author who is just starting out?
Keta: Well, I’m really no one to be giving advice to other writers. I made plenty of mistakes starting out myself, so maybe that’s it – study the craft of writing. Know the basic rules at least, and then get good enough at writing you feel comfortable breaking some. I mean, there are some you should never break, but breaking one now and then won’t cause the earth to stop spinning. I have a lot of books on my Kindle (see above). I can’t tell you how many times I read one chapter and delete the book. If it doesn’t grab me right away with lots of questions, then I’m outta there. Take for example Harper Lee’s opening line in To Kill A Mockingbird: Scout: When he was nearly thirteen, my brother Jem got his arm badly broken at the elbow.
I mean, she hooked me. Completely. I was in the sixth grade the first time I read that line, and from that moment on, I wanted to know who Jem was and how the heck did he break his arm? That book really opened my eyes to reading, gave me an appreciation for love of the written word.
I hope all your reads are good ones; I hope you fall in love all over again with the written word every time you sit down to read a book.

Running The Red Line by Julie Carter
Fell-Running Champion Releases Book That Dame Kelly Holmes Calls Emotional, Heart-Warming and Thought Provoking.
LONDON, OCTOBER 2, 2018 — Julie Carter, doctor and psychologist, is a veteran British and English fell running champion, and has recently released her book ‘Running The Red Line’.
It is an informative and engaging book about running and competing, about the beauty of the fells, and above all about human emotion. Her stories are at times hilarious, at times tragic but always bravely honest.
Powerful tales of meeting life’s challenge with determination – told with a unique style and insight. The narrative puts the ideas of modern psychology to the test, distilling what is of value to everyday life. We all have our limits, our own red lines, but we spend a lot of time with huge margins between what we do and what we can do.
“Emotional, heart-warming and thought provoking. A characterful story of persistence, dedication and the love of a life with sport.” Dame Kelly Holmes, Double Olympic Champion.
“All you want from a good book; makes you laugh, makes you cry, makes you think.” Sam Ayers, Running Coach, BodyFit Cumbria.
“Fascinating, full of helpful insights, often profound.” Richard Askwith, author of Feet in The Clouds.
“Very enjoyable, an emotional journey which is beautifully written.” Steve Birkinshaw, Record-breaking Fellrunner and author of There is No Map in Hell.
An informative, fascinating and emotional read about how to approach the red lines of maximum performance and be rewarded with maximum satisfaction. For more info please visit Julie’s website: https://www.mindfell.co.uk/

About the Author – Julie Carter.
Julie Carter grew up in Sunderland and taught Outdoor Education in Cumbria before going to Medical school, then working for many years in Emergency Medicine and General Practice. On moving back to Cumbria in 2004 she was inspired to want to start fell running. After a terrible accident in which a close friend died she found solace and healing in her new-found sport. At times Julie found it hard to sustain her running due to the demands of work and her own physical problems with a congenital disability affecting her back. Despite this she flourished on the fells and twice became national champion in her age group.
Julie’s interest in helping others to succeed motivated her to write ‘Running The Red Line’. Not only to wanting to share things of beauty and to share her feelings but also valuable and useful insights into the challenges we all face in life, whether we run or not.
Julie trained as Human Givens therapist to assist her in helping the people she saw in General Practice, acknowledging that the medical model often lacks the answers about emotional and physical health that so many are seeking . She found the approach so helpful and effective that this has become her full-time work. For more information on the Human Givens approach see www.hgi.org.
Please email info@authoramp.com if you would like a copy of the book to review, feature, or to interview the author.

For fans of Betty Hechtman and Maggie Sefton, the latest craft frenzy is Holly Quinn’s Handcrafted series debut.
Sammy Kane just moved back to her hometown to run a craft store. But when the owner of a nearby yarn shop is murdered, Sammy will needle little help finding the killer.
When a heartbroken Samantha “Sammy” Kane returns to her hometown of Heartsford, WI, for her best friend Kate’s funeral, she learns that Kate’s much-loved craft store is in danger of perishing with its owner. Confounding all her expectations of the life she would live, Sammy moves back home with her golden retriever and takes over Community Craft. A few doors down Main Street, fellow new arrival Ingrid Wilson has just opened the Yarn Barn, a real “purl” of a shop. But when Sammy strolls over to see if Ingrid could use a little help, she finds Ingrid’s dead body—with a green aluminum knitting needle lodged in her throat.
Detective Liam Nash is thrown for a loop as every single citizen of Heartsford seems to have a theory about Ingrid’s murder. And nearly everyone in town seems to be a suspect. But the last time Sammy did any sleuthing was as a little moppet. And this is not fun and games. Sammy is eager to help the handsome Liam—who seems to be endlessly inventive in finding reasons to talk with her—and when Liam arrests affable woodworker Miles Danbury, Sammy puts everything on the line to help clear Miles.
As the case comes dangerously close to unraveling, Sammy must stitch the clues together. But the killer has other plans—and if Sammy’s not careful, she may wind up in a perilous knot in A Crafter Knits a Clue, the first warm and woolly yarn of Holly Quinn’s new Handcrafted mysteries.

The Peaky Climbers Book Released – How Eight Amateur Cyclists Became Kings of the Mountains.
The team have so far raised over £55,000 for British Lung Foundation and Caring Cancer Trust.
LONDON, SEPTEMBER 26, 2018 — Eight friends take on the greatest challenge of their lives, to cycle 20 peaks of the Tour de France in seven days. Their adventure will take them beyond what any of them expected, through epic highs, dramatic lows, unforgettable scenery and the toughest days of cycling any of them have ever encountered. But will they make it to the finish line?
The book encapsulates the gruelling 7 day challenge, plus the year leading up to it – The sheer amount of training required, the commitment and support from their families, and the incredible pressure to raise the £30,000 target they set themselves for the charities selected.
Founder of the Peaky Climbers, and co-author of the book, Paul McIntosh says:
“My mother died 10 years ago (2007) and I was turning 50 (Sep 2017) – this drove me to think of a difficult challenge that would be something really different. This combined with a young local girl, Maisie Norton, who died of Cancer aged 17 all went into the thought process. LeJog was too ordinary, so the King of the Mountains challenge was the one.”
“A seriously impressive achievement. Eye-watering on paper and just plain barbarous in the flesh!” Simon Warren, author of 100 Greatest Cycling Climbs of the Tour de France
“An unbelievable team effort in aid of two amazing charities. I would love it if you would read this book, just love it….”
Kevin Keegan, Former England Manager and Professional Footballer.
A gripping, fascinating read about the lengths The Peaky Climbers go to raise money for the amazing charities – the British Lung Foundation and Caring Cancer Trust. The book will be released on October 12th by Brown Dog Books, Bath, England. More info: https://www.peakyclimbers.com/.

Paul McIntosh
The founder of the Peaky Climbers, aged 50. Paul is married to Nicola, and they have two sons, Jai and Ethan. Paul was brought up in Elstree and moved to Wantage 20 years ago once he found the love of his life, Nicola. He has run his own business since 2009, which he started after a successful career in the corporate world. Paul has played football from an early age, and in later years started a Veterans team (Milton Utd) some 12 years ago.
Over the past few years Paul has played a bit of golf and completed the odd event to keep fit and raise funds for charity – London100, Great North Run and Great South Run. He wanted to do a challenge that would make people sit up and take notice, something that would make people say they’re mad and something that would make his mum proud if she were here – essentially they cycled the equivalent of 2.25 times the height of Everest in 1 week.
Anna Hughes
Anna Hughes is a lifelong cyclist and environmentalist. A passionate cycle tourer, in 2011 Anna cycled 4000 miles around the coast of Britain. The adventure inspired her to sail around the same coastline two years later. Since then she has completed many bicycle and boat tours around Europe and the UK, including riding from Land’s End to John o’ Groats in 2015.
Her first book, Eat, Sleep, Cycle: a bike ride around the coast of Britain, was published in March 2015 by Summersdale. Her second book, Pedal Power: inspirational stories from the world of cycling, was published in April 2017. An experienced speaker, Anna gives regular talks to adults and children about her various adventures, and also writes articles for magazines and websites.
A lover of the outdoors and attracted by the freedom of boat life, Anna has lived on a narrowboat for the past four years, mostly in London and more recently on the Kennet and Avon canal in Bath. She is currently a GetOutside champion for Ordnance Survey, inspiring others to enjoy the great outdoors for all the benefits that brings. A qualified teacher, cycling instructor and mechanic, she works freelance, currently in the Bristol area.

October brings a message from Beyond The Grave…
Halloween is fast approaching in the quiet Los Angeles County city of Vista Beach, home of computer programmer and tole-painting enthusiast Rory Anderson. While her painting chapter prepares to open its annual boutique house, Rory receives an unexpected email from Beyond The Grave, a company that automatically sends out messages when someone dies.
“I think I have a stalker,” the message reads. “If you’re reading this I’m either missing or dead. My life may depend on what you do. Please find out what happened to me.”
Haunted by her friend’s disappearance and possible death, Rory begins her search with the help of best friend and fellow painter, Liz Dexter. Can they discover who has designs on the missing woman and uncover the truth before one of them becomes the stalker’s next victim?

English professor Lila Maclean knew drama would be involved when she agreed to consult on Stonedale University’s production of Puzzled: The Musical.
But she didn’t expect to find herself cast into such chaos: the incomprehensible play is a disaster, the crumbling theater appears to be haunted, and, before long, murder takes center stage.
The show must go on—yet as they speed toward opening night, it becomes clear that other members of the company may be targeted as well. Lila searches for answers while contending with a tenacious historical society, an eccentric playwright, an unsettling psychic, an enigmatic apparition, and a paranormal search squad.
With all of this in play, will she be able to identify who killed her colleague…or will it soon be curtains for Lila too?
