Two Sons by Stewart Gill Owen

Two Sons: The story of two families divided by war and united in grief

Screenshot 2014-11-11 21.14.05

Stewart Gill Owen

It’s 1932 and Hitler and the Nazi Party are threatening to take control of Germany. There is a growing fear of another war.

Two families from vastly different backgrounds make their way to visit their sons’ war graves in the Flanders region of Belgium. John and Annie Williams are on their annual trip from England in memory of their son, Herbert, who had been killed while fighting at the battle of Passchendaele in 1917. Erich and Martina Lehmann have travelled from Germany to pay their respects to the memory of their son, Kurt who died in the same campaign. During their visit, the couples meet and in the wake of such devastation, confrontational events take place.

‘Two Sons’ moves from the war on the western front to the domestic lives of both families over a period of two decades. Having lost their sons in one conflict, both families fear that they may have to make further sacrifices in light of the growing threat.

About the Author

Stewart Gill Owen was born in Blackburn and grew up in Lancashire. After art school, his career was in design and advertising, and as a lecturer in further and higher education. He now lives in Somerset with his wife Jessie. Their two daughters often visit, bringing the five grandsons with them. Stewart is a keen historian. It is the most immediate and ‘living’ history that has inspired Two Sons, which is his first book. Many of us still have links with the First World War. Stewart lost an uncle in Flanders and one of his ancestors was the poet Wilfred Owen. Something that happened so long ago is in many ways still with us.

Reviews

“This is a very engaging story with rich characterisation, a roller coaster of emotions and excellent period detail.” Bruce Payne, Amazon UK.

“I really enjoyed this read, and would congratulate the author on the way he handled such a sensitive subject and told the stories of two separate families intertwining the past with the present.” Weeki, Amazon UK.

This book is a sensitive reminder of the impact the war had on both sides. A very good read, which I highly recommend.” JR Hold, amazon UK.

One hundred years on this is a very relevant book for young and old. Read it. You will giggle and cry, and be glad you did.” H P Johns, Amazon UK.

Background

Some of my family history forms the basis of this book,” says Stewart, “I changed some of the characters, added to the detail of events and changed the name of the family. I wanted to tell a story that promoted the experiences of joy, pride, despair, love, grief and the fear of loss. Two Sons is about those emotions, it’s about the passion and the feelings that many of us share, regardless of nationality, class, faith and status.”

It’s a story about the consequences of the battle of Passchendaele that took place in Flanders in 1917. The book is based on a number of confrontational encounters that takes place between a British and a German family in Belgium in the summer of 1932.

I chose the date because, in July of that year, Hitler and the Nazi party were threatening to take control of Germany” says Stewart, “and there was a growing fear in Belgium of the possibility of renewed hostilities.” During the visit, heated disagreements and arguments take place. The story moves from the battlefields of the Western Front to the domestic life of the families over a period of two decades.

The choice of the battle of Passchendaele as the main campaign theme of the story was very deliberate. “Passchendaele or as it was also known, the Third Battle of Ypres,” explains Stewart, “became it’s known, not only for the scale of the carnage and the high level of casualties, but also for the mud and the creation of a desolate landscape that is so recognizable as a typical image of World War One.”

Although it’s a work of fiction,” continues Stewart, “I wanted the detail to be as accurate as I could make it and this involved considerable in-depth research. My view is that this is a story that has never been told in any depth before. This is my first novel I know it wont be my last I’m already working on a sequel.”

The Queen of Sparta by T.S. Chaudhry

A Novel of Ancient Greece

1517781_1475080829379996_1726605592_o

Genre: Historical Fiction

Author: T.S. Chaudhry

Publisher: Top Hat Books

Xerxes, the Great King of Persia, invades Greece in 480 B.C. at the head of a massive army. Three hundred Spartans and King Leonidas die heroically blocking the Persian advance at the pass of Thermopylae.

The Persians are poised to conquer all of Greece. The only one standing in their way is a woman – Gorgo, Queen of Sparta.

Though history has relegated her role to that of a bystander, what if she played a central role in the Greek resistance to the Persian invasion. What if she kept her true role a secret in order to play it more effectively? What if she was hiding other secrets too – dark secrets of murder and vengeance? What if the only person who truly appreciated her genius was an enemy prisoner whom she has vowed to kill? What if after their victory, the Greeks start to turn on each other? What if, eventually, Gorgo has to choose between the security of Sparta and safety of her son? And what if the only one who could find a way out is the same prisoner who had once fought against the Spartans?

“This novel is an exciting re-imagining of events in Ancient Greece. Rich in detail, with excellent battle scenes and sections on military strategy as well as compelling lead characters, Chaudhry manages to make his intricate story accessible and involving.”

“Great read for any lover of historical fiction.”

“A vivid and superbly researched original history of what it was like to have lived in this fascinating period of time.”

About the Author

T.S.  Chaudhry was born in Karachi, Pakistan. He has a Bachelors Degree from Cornell University, a Masters in Public Policy from Harvard University and a Ph.D. from the University of Cambridge.  A former Pakistani diplomat, he has been working for the United Nations on peace and security issues in Africa.

The Queen of Sparta is Chaudhry’s first novel. The story came to him several decades ago while he was reading Herodotus for his ‘A’ Level examination. It occurred to him that a case could be made for Gorgo of Sparta orchestrating the Greek resistance to the Persian invasion without essentially changing any of the facts presented by Herodotus. This is essentially an alternative retelling of a well-known tale.

He is currently working on a ‘prequel’ to the Queen of Sparta based on events leading up to the Battle of Marathon, called Fennel of Field.

Moonlight in Winter Park New

Moonlight in Winter Park by Samantha Chase

Publication date: November 24th 2014

Genres: Adult, Contemporary, Romance

Synopsis:

“Moonlight in Winter Park” – A modern-day Beauty and the Beast style Christmas.

All Hope Cooper needed this year was to have the kind of Christmas her family always cherished. But with her parents gone and her only brother having to work, it doesn’t look like it’s going to work out for her. There’s nothing she can do about her parents, but she most certainly can voice her annoyance at her brother’s boss for making him work out of town all through the holidays.

Beckett James hates the holidays and everything that goes with them. They were important at one time, but now the only thing that mattered was his company and it’s continued growth and anyone who worked for him better feel the same way. If not, then they could find employment elsewhere and good riddance. With a major expansion deal on the line, Beckett needs to focus. What he doesn’t need is Hope to come barging into his mountain retreat demanding that her brother come home immediately due to an emergency.

Suddenly it’s two alone in a snowstorm. Two alone for Christmas. And two alone to fight an attraction that had been there all along. Hope soon begins to realize she may have misjudged Beckett while he comes to see that there really is something special and magical about Christmas. But once they leave their private winter wonderland and return to their normal lives, will the magic still be there?

Excerpt:

Hope couldn’t believe it, but she readily reached out and put her hand in his. “Then I guess this place is aptly named.”

Beckett carefully pulled her to her feet. “What do you mean?”

“I saw some of the signs as I was walking down the driveway earlier. This place used to be called Winter Park. If the view is how you described, I’m just saying that name is fitting.”

Beckett didn’t respond, but he did pull her in close. “You scared the hell out of me earlier, you know that right?” His arms slowly slid around her waist.

Hope’s breath caught in her throat. “I didn’t mean to scare you,” she said softly, looking up into his dark eyes.

“I know. You meant to piss me off,” he chuckled softly as one hand came up to caress her cheek. “I’m glad I found you.”

“Me too. I can’t even being to think what would have happened if you hadn’t come when you did.”

“That’s not what I meant,” he said quietly, and bent his head toward hers.

“Beckett…”

And then his lips touched hers and silenced her. Hope was too surprised to react at first. It was everything that she remembered – soft, exciting and very arousing. The man certainly knew how to kiss. As if they had a mind of their own, her arms came up and rested on Beckett’s broad shoulders. They were pressed together from head to toe.

His lips were slowly sipping from hers as if he was giving her time to say no or to push him away. Hope knew this instinctively and raked a hand up into his hair and pulled him closer- making sure he couldn’t misinterpret her decision.

Magna Blade Review

e15f466bce9dda839bbe97b1b9d13bdc97b37442

I loved this razor. NO nicks or cuts left my legs feeling smooth. I was in love until it feel out of it’s holder and broke. Now I am trying to search on getting some blades the handle still works but I need more blades. It comes with one.

Magna Blade is a patented device which can be found online at Getmoreshaves.com. It is a unique product which extends the performance life of the razor blade edge by a factor of 2 x 6 times normal expectations. This is accomplished by the exposure of the razor blasde to the magnetic energy field imbedded in Magna Blade which projects a “reverse polarization energy field ” to accomplish this outcome. The product has no batteries, or moving parts and last for at least a decade. This product includes a handsome chrome handle designer quality razor with a high quality five blade head. Magna Blade is currently available in Island Coral and Fforest Green.

I received one or more of the products mentioned above for free using Tomoson.com. Regardless, I only recommend products or services I use personally and believe will be good for my readers.

Note from the Author for post–

Hey guys!

Thank you so much for stopping by today to check out my debut novel, Choosing Evil! This

baby was a labor of love, for sure. And, its tagline, ‘Embrace Your Inner Demon’ has already

raised some eyebrows around my small beach town (oops!).

Well, if you’re into the paranormal like I am, it won’t shock you to know the demons in Choosing

Evil are not only sexy and bad-ass, but full of emotional baggage and human appeal.

While Choosing Evil is Serafina’s story, her love interest, Damon is a giant part of it. If you like

what you read, get ready for the sequel, Breaking Evil, which I’m hoping to release in 2015.

Both books are part of The Ensouled Trilogy, which not only pits good against evil, but makes

each character, and reader, question what evil really means to them.

I hope you have fun today getting introduced to Choosing Evil, and me! Don’t forget to find me

on social media and, of course, sign up for my giveaways below :)

Thank you again for helping me celebrate Choosing Evil’s release!

Excerpt
It occurred to me that we never

really had angry sex before.

It was about to happen.
Right now.
Leaning down, he slanted his mouth

over mine. I took it, opening my mouth for the aggressive thrust of his tongue.

Our tongues tangled, breaths mingling. He kissed me with slow, hard laps,

making his message clear.
He owned my body.
He knew it.
Did he think that gave him the right

to hug his ex in front of me and that I’d have no say about it?
Hurt, I bit down on his lip.
Not breaking our kiss, he groaned

and sucked on my tongue. His fingers tightened around my nipples. That hint of

pain again.
Each sting merged with the

sensations his tongue evoked, until I was drugged. Couldn’t think about

anything but him coming inside me.
Letting go of his wrists, I fisted

his lapels. “God, just fuck me already. Please.” My tone was incoherent. Needy.
He wrenched my head back with a fist

in my hair, attacking my neck with his tongue and teeth. “You want me to fuck you?” He gave me a harsh bite

that made me yelp.
It wasn’t lost on what his words

truly meant. “Yes. You.” Gasping for breath, I pressed as close to him as

possible. “Always you.”
He didn’t deserve that, but I had no

choice but to give it to him.
A guttural sound left him. His hands

came down on my ass, lifting me up against him. “I’ll give it to you. Every

single, God damned thing.”
Christ, please tell me that meant

what I thought it meant.
Bending at the knee, he scooped me

up into his arms.
I’d become so lightheaded with want

that it took me a few seconds to find my voice. When I finally did, it sounded

raspier than I’d ever heard it. “Where are we going?”
The look in his eyes somehow turned

hungrier.
Angrier.
Determined.
I couldn’t focus on the beautiful

garden around us, or what direction he stormed in.
It was all about him. That austere

expression, the hardened brow. His golden eyes fixated ahead and burning with that violent energy.
Oh, God. I loved him. I truly did.

So fucking much, and suddenly, I couldn’t breathe through the emotion—could

barely contain the words inside me.
Calum raced up another short flight

of steps and lowered me down to my unsteady feet. He reached into his coat

pocket for that passkey again and stepped up to me.
His free hand met my pussy through

my dress, palming it, the action possessive. “We’re going somewhere private.

You’re mine. No one sees you come but me.”
