About Unlawful Harvest
[image error]
Unlawful Harvest is a Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thriller. If you have been reading the Zachary Goldman Mysteries, then you have met Kenzie Kirsch, who works in the medical examiner’s office.
This story will take you back to before Kenzie started medical school, to the case that first attracted her to medical investigation.
When an Urban Legend becomes the truth
Kenzie Kirsch had led a sheltered life; daughter of a wealthy lobbyist, her way had been paved for her, and she wasn’t really required to do much in life. There were events to make an appearance at, boards to sit on, fundraisers to support, but she could pick and choose what she wanted to do and how busy she wanted to be.
When she set out to find out why her sister Amanda was so ill, she had no idea where her amateur investigation would take her. Amanda’s illness had never been discussed. Amanda deserved her privacy.
As Kenzie’s questions take her deeper and deeper into the murky world of transplant tourism, Kenzie starts to wonder just what her parents have been covering up, and who else’s life might hang in the balance.

Excerpt from Before the Fall
Did you get a chance to pick up my latest release, Unlawful Harvest on the weekend? If not, you can get it now! Unlawful Harvest is the first of the Kenzie Kirsch Medical Thrillers, and provides Kenzie’s backstory, which you may be particularly interested in if you have been reading the Zachary Goldman Mysteries.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I have been reading Before the Fall, by Noah Hawley. The book begins with the end – protagonist Scott saving a four-year-old boy after their plane goes down in the ocean. It then examines the lives of each of the passengers and how they got there, Scott processing the accident and the investigators trying to figure out what happened. It has been a fascinating story so far. Sensitive readers beware that there is some crude language in this one.
“Ladies and gentlemen, please prepare for takeoff,” he says.
Maggie looks over at her two kids, Rachel sitting with one leg folded under her … and little JJ hunched in slumber, slack-faced with childish oblivion.

On a foggy summer night, eleven people — ten privileged, one down-on-his-luck painter — depart Martha’s Vineyard on a private jet headed for New York. Sixteen minutes later, the unthinkable happens: the plane plunges into the ocean. The only survivors are the painter Scott Burroughs and a four-year-old boy, who is now the last remaining member of an immensely wealthy and powerful media mogul’s family.
Was it by chance that so many influential people perished? Or was something more sinister at work? A storm of media attention brings Scott fame that quickly morphs into notoriety and accusations, and he scrambles to learn truth about the crash. Amid trauma and chaos, the fragile relationship between Scott and the young boy grows and glows at the heart of this stunning novel, raising questions of fate, morality, and the inextricable ties that bind us together.

When the body of twenty-eight-year-old social worker Kera Jacobsen shows up on Chief New York City Medical Examiner Laurie Montgomery’s autopsy table, at first it appears she was the victim of a tragic yet routine drug overdose. But for Laurie and her new pathology resident, the brilliant but enigmatic Dr. Aria Nichols, little things aren’t adding up. Kera’s family and friends swear she never touched drugs. Administrators from the hospital where Kera worked are insisting the case be shrouded in silence. And although Kera was ten weeks pregnant, nobody seems to know who the father was–or whether he holds the key to Kera’s final moments alive.
As a medical emergency temporarily sidelines Laurie, impulsive Aria turns to a controversial new technique: using genealogic DNA databases to track down those who don’t want to be found. Working with experts at a start-up ancestry website, she plans to trace the fetus’s DNA back to likely male relatives in the hopes of identifying the mystery father. But when Kera’s closest friend and fellow social worker is murdered, the need for answers becomes even more urgent. Because someone out there clearly doesn’t want Kera’s secrets to come to light . . . and if Aria gets any closer to the truth, she and Laurie might find themselves a killer’s next targets.

Chief surgical resident Zora Smyth only planned to solve the nameless patients case that landed on her operating table and complete the rest of her residency in peace. It shouldn’t be as difficult as facing false murder charges from a serial killer, or enduring a brush with death, right?
But her search for the truth makes her the target of a ruthless adversary—much closer to her than she imagines— obsessed with turning her most feared nightmare into reality.
With a larger-than-life enemy nipping at her heels, Zora races to clear her name, save her medical license, and stay alive while doing so.

Perez is doing secret experimental brain implant operations on victims kidnapped from Mexican farms. As Cameron and Mitzi struggle to understand the purpose of the hi-tech implants, Perez draws closer to his ambitious goal. He ensnares the brilliant and enigmatic Dr. Overbridge, one of the world’s top neurosurgeons, to perform the complex surgery by promising redemption for a past mistake that led to a terrible tragedy.
Overbridge is haunted by the woman he killed and the son he maimed, but also by the dozens of men he killed as a sniper in Vietnam. He is determined to use the new technology to exorcise his demons. As the experiments continue, Perez’s men try to clean up all the loose ends, including Cameron, Mitzi, and anyone who has seen the surgery. If Perez can’t be located, and stopped, the consequences for the entire world will be devastating.

The first murder was a tragedy.
The second was a mystery.
The third was an epiphany.
Detective Terry Millar doesn’t believe in coincidences. As a criminal profiler, he’s built his reputation on identifying patterns and perpetrators.
But he’s never encountered a killer like this.
Millar and his team are being led of a macabre treasure hunt around the city of Ottawa, and they’re desperate to find a connection between the crimes before the killer strikes again.
The murders bear a striking similarity to one another, which should make it easier for the renowned profiler, but the evidence seems to point in an impossible direction.
With every secret that’s revealed, Millar is a step closer to realising that nothing will ever be the same again.
If you like dark, witty crime novels that will keep you guessing, then you’ll love the first installment of Kevin Hopkins’ page turning Ottawa Detective Series.

Maya and Josh, two kids as different as black and white collide in the heat of a North Carolina summer. The billboard leading into town reads Historic Maxton: A Good Place To Live. Though it was good for many, it wasn’t for everyone. It was a place where goodhearted salt-of-the-earth folks lived alongside the narrow-minded and intolerant.
Decades later: Maya and Josh have realized their intellectual potentials teaching and researching genetic engineering at Harvard. Diseases long ignored and vastly underestimated by the World Health Organization now threaten a global pandemic. In their hour of greatest need, the government and private sector turn to Maya and Josh for a solution to the planet’s impending crisis.
As Maya and Josh work to stem the tide of imminent global disaster, they face challenges both personal and professional and are beset upon by forces that seem to defy explanation—a shadowy figure drifts in and out of their lives over the course of decades causing irreparable damage, and the powers who once turned to them for help now seem to conspire against them making Josh’s life a living hell. The weight of the world rests on his shoulders but is he still the altruistic youth who set out to change the world or has he become someone very different, and will the results of his work be those everyone expects?

People are again dropping like flies in Dr. Steele’s ER. She is facing another string of unexplained deaths, but this time it’s even harder. Why? Because she doesn’t mind seeing them dead. They are the worst of the worst: wife beaters, child abusers, pet killers, and downright psychopaths that the law failed to punish. Even worse, it fails to protect their innocent victims. Can this be God’s work? Did God get busy cleaning their community of evil? Emma doesn’t think so. She finds the answer disturbingly near. It isn’t God; it’s a human, way too close for comfort.
As she struggles to decide, she finds herself engaged in the fight of her life to protect everything she holds dear. Will she destroy the evil, or will it crush her first? If you like Patricia Cornwell, Robin Cook, and Tess Gerritsen, you’ll love Rada Jones. Strong, flawed, charismatic characters engaged in everchanging conflicts clash in the fight of their life. Stakes couldn’t be higher.

Coast Guard Commander Brice Bannon and his team of highly-skilled operatives must race against time and risk everything to rescue the President of the United States, held hostage in an experimental city under the sea in the thrilling new novel in David DeLee’s adrenaline-filled seacoast adventure series.
During a submersible hydrofoil race for charity, Coast Guard Commander Brice Bannon’s best friend Skyjack McMurphy is nearly killed. Was the incident an accident…or intentional?
Before they can determine the truth, Bannon is invited to join the Director of Homeland Security and the President of the United States to tour Tiamat Bluff, an experimental city built one-thousand feet under the sea in the Gulf of Maine. When the city is seized by terrorists and the President’s taken hostage, it’s up to Bannon and his team, Skyjack McMurphy and Tara “Blades” Sardana, to rescue the President before time runs out.
But first Bannon must uncover the truth behind the terror group’s secret agenda, expose a potential clandestine conspiracy, and unravel the secret connection between the mercenary leader and his boss and friend Director of Homeland Security, Elizabeth Grayson.

Spring is beginning to brighten Sorenson, Wisconsin, for Mattie and Steve Hurley and their family. While their son Matthew may be in his terrible twos and Steve’s daughter Emily a moody teenager, the kids bring light to their lives when their work is dark by its nature—Steve is a homicide detective and Mattie is a medicolegal death investigator, aka medical examiner. They deal in corpses.
The latest corpse, a Jane Doe, was clearly an addict, but drugs didn’t kill her, at least not directly. She’s been stabbed multiple times in a pattern that is disturbingly familiar to Mattie. When she discovers flower petals from yellow carnations stuffed into the stab wounds, she recognizes a very specific M.O.—belonging to a convicted serial killer who’s currently serving a life sentence.
The details of the flower petals were never made public in the last case, so it can’t be a copycat crime. It looks like the wrong man is in prison, and the murderer is still at large. Now it’s up to Mattie and Steve to get the case reopened—and catch the real carnation killer…

P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn't want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of...lol). I can't wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters.

—Another great work of art by Ms. Workman. I am amazed at the diversity of her writing and how much I really enjoy them all. She can write cozy mystery, YA books that should be read by all, medical thrillers, Zach Goldman series and now a paranormal series. I am so glad to have found this author. I am honored that I get to read them early also.
—This book has all my favourite things: heart, great writing, nearly-flawless editing, something unusual in the air, and a cat. I needed a light read, and this fit the bill perfectly. Recommended.
—This book actually surprised me. I knew that a psychic cat would be entertaining. I just didn’t expect it to be this good. You really do get wrapped up in the people and story. It sounds like a fairly gentle story, but there is a lot of suspense involved. Add a bunch of humor to the mix and you are in for a treat. I love the characters. Wish I had some friends like them. And the cat is so very well done. Acts like a typical cat, but a lot smarter than his human. This is a story that you don’t want to put down.
—Extremely well written as are all of P.D. Workman’s books, the characters well developed. I’m a character reader, I get into the characters. Who and what they are. Why they do the things they do. The things that make a reader get invested into the characters and thereby the book. I look forward to P.D. Workman’s next book.

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”
“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”
“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

Excerpt from A Spark of Light
How is your Christmas season coming along? I finally got our tree up on Sunday. With a crazy kitten, I’m not sure how long it is going to stay up…
We have had at least one year where we didn’t get the tree up until Christmas Eve, so I’m at least ahead of that. December is a busy time, and a difficult time for many.
Check out this year’s Christmas posts so far:
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
I quite enjoy Jodi Picoult and the way that she portrays her characters, each individuals with unique backstories and relationships. And she is not afraid to tackle difficult issues, as you’ll find when you read this one!
I am currently reading A Spark of Light, which juxtapositions an armed hostage situation with the very personal situations the various women and men are facing.
She shouldn’t have come to the Center.
She should have stayed a little girl.
Because now she might not live to become anything else.
—Jodi Picoult, A Spark of Light

At Mississippi’s sole remaining women’s reproductive services clinic, a gunman bursts in and takes its patients and staff hostage. The stories that brought these individuals to the clinic vary, from a woman awaiting cancer screening results to a protestor hoping to catch the clinic in a scandal that could be used in a pro-life campaign. Then there is the police hostage negotiator, whose daughter is also trapped inside the facility, and the gunman himself, who has a vendetta to carry out. Meanwhile, across the state, a seventeen-year-old woman lands in the hospital after an attempt to self-terminate her pregnancy and is subsequently charged by the pro-life DA for the murder of her unborn child. They, too, are connected to the events unfolding in the clinic.
As the book moves backward in time, each chapter set one hour earlier than the last, we learn how all these people and their stories are unwittingly connected–and that none of these characters’ reasons for being where they are at this fateful place and time are exactly what it appears at first glance.

+ About Delusions of the Past
What kind of a monster poisons a psychic’s cat?
When Starlight first fell ill, Reg thought that she was the cause of it. She should have been watching him more carefully. She should have found out about household plants and chemicals that could hurt her familiar. She was clearly a negligent owner.
But it soon becomes clear that there is some darker force at work, and Reg is going to need all of her resources to find the culprit before it is too late if she is to have any chance of saving her furry companion’s life.

But the warlocks in her life are making things increasingly complicated, they have nine kittens to find homes for, and gardening turns out not to be such a relaxing diversion after all.
Will Reg’s discovery of a mysterious key lead her to incalculable wealth or untold danger?

—P D Workman has done it again; created a cast of characters and a storyline that are captivating and enthralling. Once I started this cozy I didn’t want to put it down (which can be a bad thing when you have a family to take care of…lol). I can’t wait for the other books in this series. I think Reg is going to turn out to be one of my favorite new characters. Pick up your copy as soon as possible.

Researching new magical or mythical creatures for the Reg Rawlings series is a lot of fun. I enjoy reading all of the different versions of the myths, and then putting my own twist on them for the series.
I have written about non-speaking individuals in other books, and have always liked to dig down deeper into communication through methods other than speech, into body language, facial expression, gesture, and behavior. Writing Forst and Fir allowed me to delve again into the way that non-speaking people are viewed in our predominantly-speaking society, and to explore the methods that others in the story communicate other than just through speech.

Reg climbed out of bed, the dread from her nightmare still squeezing her heart so tightly it hurt.
+ About Night of Nine Draugrs
Reg recognizes that feeling of dread.
Something is disrupting the spiritual atmosphere in Black Sands, but no one else seems to be aware of its menacing presence. So Reg does her best to push it to the back of her conscious mind and to focus on new friendships and opportunities. She has been in Florida for long enough that it’s time to have some fun.
But ignoring the presence doesn’t make it go away, and before long, Reg has been dragged into a manhunt—or a creature hunt—that is scarier than anything she has faced in the paranormal community yet.
With the help of some long-buried memories and unexpected helpers, Reg is able to find a few answers… and a lot more questions.

+ Author's Note
Author’s Notes may contain spoilers
I was out for a run one day, and saw a poster about a missing cat. I saw copies of the poster on numerous poles and mailboxes. It was for a cat named Nico, a pure black cat. A block or two later, I saw a black cat. I tried to call him, but he just ran away. The next poster I ran past, I took down the phone number and texted about the sighting. The owner asked about the cat’s location, and advised that they had already ruled that one out. Not Nico.
On my way home, I ran past a house with a black cat on the fence. I texted the owner the location and she said she would check it out. She reported back later that it was not Nico, and advised that they were referring to the “imposter” cats as “nicoys.”
Biking home from work the next day, I saw another black cat in the area and again passed the information on.
I don’t know if Nico ever got home, but I knew I wanted to use the unusually high concentration of black cats in the neighborhood in an upcoming Reg Rawlins story!

The Mysteries of Christmas
[image error]
Mysteries for Christmas? It shouldn’t come as a surprise that you can find books on any subject, including mysteries that revolve around Christmas or take place during Christmas. While I don’t have any full-length mysteries that are Christmas-themed — yet, I do have some coming — I do have:
Dog-Free Dinner
[image error]
Dog-Free Dinner is a Holiday Short Story that is part of the Auntie Clem’s Bakery cozy mystery series. In the timeline, Witch-Free Halloween and Dog-Free Dinner fall after book 3, Allergen-Free Assignation. Look for a full-length Christmas book in this series next year.
Vic is looking forward to Christmas with her new Bald Eagles Falls family. Erin—not so much. But she wants to make it a special day for Vic.
An unexpected turn in events changes all of their carefully-laid plans.
This Christmas short, part of the Auntie Clem’s Bakery series, is only available through my website. The series—and your holiday—won’t be complete without it.

She Wore Mourning
[image error]
She Wore Mourning is not Christmas-themed, but it does take place during the Christmas season. In fact, so does book #4, He Was Walking Alone (which takes place one year later). A warning, however, that Christmas is a bad time of year for Zachary, so if you’re looking for a light, feel-good Christmas story, this is not it! He Was Walking Alone does include a Christmas reunion for Zachary.
A dead child.
A mother deep in mourning.
Private Investigator Zachary Goldman’s life isn’t all roses, but he tries to put his own shattered life behind him to investigate the death of five-year-old Declan Bond.
Declan’s death has been ruled an accident, but his grandmother thinks there is more to it. She fears Declan’s mother will not be able to find peace until Zachary can give them an answer once and for all. But as Zachary digs into the circumstances surrounding Declan’s death, he finds that all is not as it seems, and somebody doesn’t want him to find the truth.

They are suspenseful, funny, frightening, and poignant.
Included are puzzles by Mary Higgins Clark, Isaac Asimov, and Ngaio Marsh; uncanny tales in the tradition of A Christmas Carol by Peter Lovesey and Max Allan Collins; O. Henry-like stories by Stanley Ellin and Joseph Shearing, stories by pulp icons John D. MacDonald and Damon Runyon; comic gems from Donald E. Westlake and John Mortimer; and many, many more. Almost any kind of mystery you’re in the mood for–suspense, pure detection, humor, cozy, private eye, or police procedural—can be found in these pages.

Christmas Eve, 1814: Jane Austen has been invited to spend the holiday with family and friends at The Vyne, the gorgeous ancestral home of the wealthy and politically prominent Chute family. As the year fades and friends begin to gather beneath the mistletoe for the twelve days of Christmas festivities, Jane and her circle are in a celebratory mood: Mansfield Park is selling nicely; Napoleon has been banished to Elba; British forces have seized Washington, DC; and on Christmas Eve, John Quincy Adams signs the Treaty of Ghent, which will end a war nobody in England really wanted.
Jane, however, discovers holiday cheer is fleeting. One of the Yuletide revelers dies in a tragic accident, which Jane immediately views with suspicion. If the accident was in fact murder, the killer is one of Jane’s fellow snow-bound guests. With clues scattered amidst cleverly crafted charades, dark secrets coming to light during parlor games, and old friendships returning to haunt the Christmas parties, whom can Jane trust to help her discover the truth and stop the killer from striking again?

It’s Christmas many years ago, and topping young Hannah Swensen’s wish list is becoming the go-to baker in Lake Eden, Minnesota. But as Hannah finds out, revisiting holiday memories can be murder…
With her dream of opening The Cookie Jar taking shape, Hannah’s life matches the hectic December hustle and bustle in Lake Eden—especially when she agrees to help recreate a spectacular Christmas Ball from the past in honor of Essie Granger, an elderly local in hospice care. But instead of poring over decadent dessert recipes for the merry festivities, she instantly becomes enthralled by Essie’s old notebooks and the tale of a woman escaping danger on the streets of New York. Hannah’s surprised by Essie’s secret talent for penning crime fiction. She’s even more surprised when the story turns real. As Hannah prepares to run a bakery and move out of her mother’s house, it’ll be a true miracle if she can prevent another Yuletide disaster by solving a mystery as dense as a Christmas fruitcake . . .

In Hercule Poirot’s Christmas, the holidays are anything but merry when a family reunion is marred by murder—and the notoriously fastidious investigator is quickly on the case.
Christmas Eve, and the Lee family’s reunion is shattered by a deafening crash of furniture and a high-pitched wailing scream. Upstairs, the tyrannical Simeon Lee lies dead in a pool of blood, his throat slashed.
When Hercule Poirot offers to assist, he finds an atmosphere not of mourning but of mutual suspicion. It seems everyone had their own reason to hate the old man…

Two holiday novels provide the perfect combination of mystery and murder mixed with a generous helping of Yuletide cheer.
A CHRISTMAS GUEST
When her daughter and son-in-law plan a Christmas vacation to Paris sans hers truly, Grandmama Mariah Ellison travels to the chilly, windswept Romney Marshes to spend the holiday with old friends. But when the body of a fellow guest is found lifeless in bed, Grandmama senses foul play and takes it upon herself to assume the role of amateur detective–uncovering startling truths about the victim . . . and herself as well.
A CHRISTMAS SECRET
Dominic Corde is thrilled to “fill the robe” as substitute vicar in the village of Cottisham while the Reverend Wynter is away on a Christmas holiday. Upon arrival, Dominic and his wife, Clarice, wonder how they will be received by the congregation. But the Cordes soon discover that they have more dire matters to worry about. It turns out that the Reverend Wynter isn’t on holiday at all–and that something very sinister has transpired.

Mary Higgins Clark, for several years, has given her readers a very special holiday gift — short novels celebrating the Christmas season with tales of suspense and cheer. Now two of her most beloved stories are combined in one special volume — a welcome gift for readers in all seasons.
In Silent Night, Brian, a seven-year-old boy, is in New York City at Christmas with his mother and ten-year-old brother to visit his father, critically ill in the hospital. They plan to give him a St. Christopher medal, in the belief that it will make him well. When Brian sees a woman steal his mother’s wallet, with the medal in it, he embarks on a dangerous journey that changes the life of his mother and that of the thief.
With All Through the Night, two of Mary Higgins Clark’s most endearing characters — Alvirah, the lottery winner turned amateur sleuth, and her husband, Willy — are caught up in a Christmas mystery that begins when a young mother leaves her newborn child on the doorstep of a church rectory on Manhattan’s Upper West Side, and continues with the theft of a precious chalice from the church. It is a captivating tale of false identities and old wrongs made right, as well as a mystery that calls for all of Alvirah’s deductive powers and Willy’s world-class common sense. Even one story by America’s Queen of Suspense is cause for cheer, but this single-volume edition of Silent Night and All Through the Night is a treat for all of Mary Higgins Clark’s devoted fans at any time of the

As the holidays approach, Detective Lindsay Boxer and her friends in the Women’s Murder Club have much to celebrate. Crime is down. The medical examiner’s office is quiet. Even the courts are showing some Christmas spirit. And the news cycle is so slow that journalist Cindy Thomas is on assignment to tell a story about the true meaning of the season for San Francisco.
Then a fearsome criminal known only as “Loman” seizes control of the headlines. Solving crimes never happens on schedule, but as this criminal mastermind unleashes credible threats by the hour, the month of December is upended for the Women’s Murder Club. Avoiding tragedy is the only holiday miracle they seek.

Excerpt from Past Tense
Are you remembering to take time to enjoy the season? It’s easy to get stressed out by all of the expectations and trying to cram everything into a few short days. I hope you are taking time for your family and your own balance.
Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.
Jack Reacher is always one of my favorites. Last week I picked up Past Tense by Lee Child, and I am enjoying it as usual. This one is slightly different in that there are two parallel stories running, and they have into yet intersected, but I am at the point where they should soon. One story is about Reacher and another is about a Canadian couple, and I have enjoyed a few asides about them behaving a certain way because “they were Canadian.” I’m always interested in how people see the differences in Canadian and US culture.
It would be an epic road trip, and one he hadn’t made in years.
Lee Child, Past Tense
He was looking forward to it.
He didn’t get far.
Jack Reacher hits the pavement and sticks out his thumb. He plans to follow the sun on an epic trip across America, from Maine to California. He doesn’t get far. On a country road deep in the New England woods, he sees a sign to a place he has never been: the town where his father was born. He thinks, What’s one extra day? He takes the detour.
At the same moment, in the same isolated area, a car breaks down. Two young Canadians had been on their way to New York City to sell a treasure. Now they’re stranded at a lonely motel in the middle of nowhere. The owners seem almost too friendly. It’s a strange place, but it’s all there is.
The next morning, in the city clerk’s office, Reacher asks about the old family home. He’s told no one named Reacher ever lived in town. He’s always known his father left and never returned, but now Reacher wonders, Was he ever there in the first place?
As Reacher explores his father’s life, and as the Canadians face lethal dangers, strands of different stories begin to merge. Then Reacher makes a shocking discovery: The present can be tough, but the past can be tense . . . and deadly.
