Books for Mental Health Awareness Month

May is Mental Health Awareness Month. If you’ve been hanging around my blog for a while, you know that I frequently write about mental illness in both my books and on my blog.

You can’t even escape it in my cozy mysteries.

Mental illness is pervasive, even if people are afraid to talk about it.

Mental illnesses are among the most common health conditions in the United States.
Stats from https://www.cdc.gov/mentalhealth/learn/index.htm

More than 50% will be diagnosed with a mental illness or disorder at some point in their lifetime.1 in 5 Americans will experience a mental illness in a given year.1 in 5 children, either currently or at some point during their life, have had a seriously debilitating mental illness.1 in 25 Americans lives with a serious mental illness, such as schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, or major depression.

When you consider these statistics, it is clear that there can be few of us who will be untouched by mental illness, either in themselves or in their immediate family or circle of friends.

So why aren’t we talking about it more? Why is there a stigma attached to mental illness that isn’t attached to corrective lenses, heart disease, or sprained fingers?

Why is it that our society encourages us to seek medical treatment for physical ailments, but to keep quiet and hide mental illness? Why is it that we rarely hold people responsible for their physical illnesses, but believe that someone with mental illness just needs more willpower or to ‘cheer up’?

I do think that things are getting better and that our understanding about mental illness is growing. But we’re not there yet. There is still plenty of room for improvement.

Improving understanding through literature

Books can immerse us into new worlds and give us new perspectives on life and our fellow travellers. One of my goals when writing is to educate and increase understanding of mental illness. Here are a few highlights.

Excerpt from Killing Floor

I hope you managed to pick up some free books over the weekend! If not, some of them may still be available for free. If you’re looking for some new reads, check it out.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

Killing Floor is Lee Child’s first Jack Reacher novel. I’m sure that I have read it before. A couple of points have “rung a bell,” but otherwise it has been like reading it for the first time.

This is not quite the same Jack Reacher as we know and love in the later books in the series. Like any character, he has morphed and become more well-rounded as the series has developed. This first book is written in first person point of view (“I”) instead of third person (“he”), which is a little disconcerting if you are not used to getting right inside of Jack Reacher’s head. And Reacher sings. Both in his head and out loud. There’s lots of stuff about his interest in music in this book that you won’t find in the other books in the series.

Those differences aside, Jack is still Jack, and you can expected the chills, thrills, and twists you are used to getting from Lee Child.

You may have been murdering people left and right in a dozen states. I just don’t know. I can’t be expected to give you the benefit of the doubt.

Lee Child, Killing Floor

Ex-military policeman Jack Reacher is a drifter. He’s just passing through Margrave, Georgia, and in less than an hour, he’s arrested for murder. Not much of a welcome. All Reacher knows is that he didn’t kill anybody. At least not here. Not lately. But he doesn’t stand a chance of convincing anyone. Not in Margrave, Georgia. Not a chance in hell.

Thanksgiving dinner did not go well

+ About Tai Chi and Chai Tea

It is Thanksgiving in Bald Eagle Falls and the smells of spicy new offerings waft from Auntie Clem’s Bakery.

Mary Lou is delighted to have Campbell home for Thanksgiving dinner, but less than thrilled with his companion. Before they can get to the bakery-fresh desserts, they are joined by an uninvited guest, the kind that comes with a warrant.

You would think things couldn’t get much worse, but the appearance of a dead body raises the stakes even more.

Erin needs to do some pretty fancy contortions if she is going to figure out how to get Campbell out of this one.

+ Author's Note

Author’s notes may contain spoilers!

Muffins Masks Murder revolves around a death in police custody. There are many different causes of death in custody. The leading manner of arrest-related deaths is homicide by law enforcement officers. Of course, in 75% of those cases, arrests were made in response to a violent offense, such as assault, robbery or murder. It is only natural, when an offender dies during and arrest or shortly after, for suspicion to be thrown on the arresting officer.

But in 25% of cases, the cause of death is not homicide. It may be suicide, intoxication, accident, or natural causes. In 3-5% of arrest-related deaths, the manner of death cannot be determined. Some of these may be due to sudden cardiac death or excited delerium. It can be impossible to tell whether sudden cardiac death has been caused by allergy, obstruction, poisoning, asphyxiation, etc.

More information in the Book Club Resources section below.

Endorsements

Easily one of the most thought-provoking and compelling reads of the year, Ms. Workman has written a masterful contemporary account of one native teen’s journey from home and the possibilities for hope even for those drowning in poverty, prejudice, and addiction. Examining hard concepts such as death, rape, abuse, neglect, addiction, and wounds passed down from generation to generation, this story is full of raw emotion that will bring the reader to tears, yet unable to put the smoothly-paced story down. With true-to-life characters both good and bad, Nadie is inspirational. It isn’t because she’s perfect but rather because she is far from it and somehow manages to find the courage in the end to become someone who can help bring her tribe forward. A must-read tale for any book lover!

This book is a compelling, well-written story… It fills a void in the today’s literature and creates a discourse regarding a marginalized part of the fabric of Canada. The book resonated with me as it is about being brave and knowing… what it means to be resilient. The book will appeal – and will provide insight – to a wider audience. This book is a winner because it is not a long book and it is a perfect cure for cabin fever: as an avid reader you get a sense of accomplishment when you finish a book!

The author’s writing was so good. At first I thought this book would be a difficult read since I don’t normally read books with cultural substance but the way it was written in an engaging way made the experience enjoyable for me. It was fun to read Nadie’s journey and her self-realizations. I became intimately involved and sympathetic to her as she took decisions after decisions.

I have always wanted to learn more about the Native American culture. I think I learned a little more in this book. This book was great. This book was sad but gripping. I enjoyed the characters and the story line. I cried with these characters and smiled when they did. I think the author did a great job with this book.

Excerpt from Good Omens

Do you have autistic loved ones who you worry about during this time of crisis on in anticipation of other emergent situations? If so, you might want to check out my blog post from last week on Autism Awareness During Crisis.

And be sure to come back this weekend for some great deals!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am currently reading Neil Gaiman and Terry Pratchett’s Good Omens. If you’ve read any Neil Gaiman, you probably know that it is going to be crazy, illogical, colourful, tongue-in-cheek and all rather brilliant. It looks like it was serialized last year on Amazon Prime, though I haven’t seen it. I am enjoying it so far. If you like things like Douglass Adams (Hitchhiker’s Guide) and Monty Python, you’ll like Neil Gaiman.

But demons like Ligur and Hastur wouldn’t understand. They’d never have thought up Welsh-language television, for example. Or VAT. Or Manchester.

He’d been particularly pleased with Manchester.

What if, for once, the predictions are right, and the Apocalypse really is due to arrive next Saturday, just after tea?

It’s a predicament that Aziraphale, a somewhat fussy angel, and Crowley, a fast-living demon, now find themselves in. They’ve been living amongst Earth’s mortals since The Beginning and, truth be told, have grown rather fond of the lifestyle and, in all honesty, are not actually looking forward to the coming Apocalypse.

Now people have been predicting the end of the world almost from its very beginning, so it’s only natural to be sceptical when a new date is set for Judgement Day.

You could spend the time left drowning your sorrows, giving away all your possessions in preparation for the rapture, or laughing it off as (hopefully) just another hoax. Or you could just try to do something about it.

And then there’s the small matter that someone appears to have misplaced the Antichrist . . .

Autism Awareness During Crisis

I have been pondering, in the in-between times this month, how to approach my April Autism Awareness blog this year. (See my previous posts below.) This is primarily a book blog, so I normally share fiction or non-fiction books that have an autism-positive viewpoint or are good resources for autistic people or allies.

But this year, with COVID-19 and the restrictions and extra stress that everyone is facing, it seems disingenuous to post as if there is nothing going on. Neurotypical people are suffering with isolation and navigating new situations and programs with difficulty, not to mention those who are sick or have been affected by the deaths of loved ones. It is that much more difficult for those who are disabled and/or neurodiverse, including those with autism.

Isolation inside isolation

But why would isolation be more difficult for those who are autistic? After all, don’t they prefer isolation?

No.

And even those who prefer living or working alone still suffer in this situation.

Here are a few articles explaining some of the problems autistic people are facing, including the risks of not being able to get the food they need to survive and of being triaged behind neurotypicals (and potentially not being treated) if they fall ill.

Dealing with the current situation, crisis planning for the future

I started today looking for books for autistics about preparing for and dealing with disaster. I failed to find anything useful. I moved onto looking for articles and internet resources. Most of what I could find was emergency planning for families with autistic children. There was very little aimed at helping autistic adults or their carers.

I did find this helpful article.

So, I did what I should have done in the first place and went to the autistic/neurodiverse community to see what they were finding, creating, and posting. Here I found the isolation articles above, as well as some other real treasures:

Medical concerns

I have also had specific concerns about autistic people knowing when they are in need of medical services and being able to access them. Autistic individuals tend to have a higher rate of a number of medical concerns than does the general population. So I went searching for some more articles and resources on that topic.

Asperger’s, Pain Perception, and Body AwarenessPrimary Care for Adults on the Autism SpectrumHow quiet headphones and visual guides help autistic patients get better health careThe Mindful Body Scan above may be helpful as wellThere are a number of visual pain scales available on the net, but I would like to get more feedback from autistics as to which one(s) work best for them before recommending one

And more stress

Stress—in autistics and in neurotypicals—doesn’t look the same for everyone. We hide what we’re feeling. We don’t know what we’re feeling. We don’t know what specifically is bothering us. Or we’re just tired of being cooped up.

Some time ago, I came across this Wikihow on How to Handle an Autistic Friend’s Meltdown, which I thought was well-written and respectful. When things get to be too much, perhaps this can help you to support your autistic loved ones through difficult times.

There are other concerns that I have amidst this crisis, which also have a higher rate of occurrence in the autistic population. Homelessness is a real concern right now. People who are isolated with their abusers and no longer have a safe place to go or someone they can reach out to for help. Carers (both neurotypical and autistic) who are unable to handle the additional stress or physical demands. Please keep an eye out for the vulnerable around you. Reach out and offer help where you can.

Recommendations?

If you have some good resources, things that are helping you and your autistic family, friends, coworkers, etc. please post them in the comments section below!

And yes, books

As I said, I was not able to find books on the above topics. But I have recommended some autism-positive books in past blog posts.
