Pet Poisoning Awareness

March is Pet Poisoning Awareness month. It just so happens that my next release (coming next week!) Delusions of the Past, book #6 of the Reg Rawlins, Psychic Investigator series, includes plot twist (possibly) involving poisoning.

Spoiler: No animals die in this book

I have gathered together some resources to help you prevent accidental poisoning of your pets below. I hope they help you!

I also thought I would get some pet cozies together today for your enjoyment. Few of them will actually involve or even mention poisoning. Preorder Delusions of the Past now, and find a couple of others to read while you’re waiting for it to arrive!

About Delusions of the Past

She saw the tip of Starlight’s tail behind the kitchen island and was relieved.
“You finally decided to come out of the tree?”
His tail didn’t twitch. Reg rounded the island and gasped.

What kind of a monster poisons a psychic’s cat?

When Starlight first fell ill, Reg thought that she was the cause of it. She should have been watching him more carefully. She should have found out about household plants and chemicals that could hurt her familiar. She was clearly a negligent owner.

But it soon becomes clear that there is some darker force at work, and Reg is going to need all of her resources to find the culprit before it is too late if she is to have any chance of saving her furry companion’s life.

Books in the Reg Rawlins series can be read as individual stand-alone mysteries, or enjoy the whole series! The set of books 1-3 can still be purchased for $2.99 for a limited time.

His full name is Octavius Maxwell Ricardo Edmund Frederick Fulton, but since that’s way too long for anyone to remember, I’ve taken to calling him Octo-Cat. He talks so fast he can be difficult to understand, but seems to be telling me that his late owner didn’t die of natural causes like everyone believes.

Excerpt from Invisible Women

I hope you had a chance to pick up a free copy of The Telepathy of Gardens, book #5 in the Reg Rawlins Psychic Investigator series last weekend!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I’ve just started reading Invisible Women: Data Bias in a World Designed for Men, by Caroline Criado Perez. As you might guess by the title, this one is not a thriller! But I am finding it very interesting. Not as a “feminist” book, but as a book about data, the way the world has been engineered, how what data we gather affects the results, and how to become more aware of these built-in biases. It is a fascinating subject.

I didn’t even think until now about how well this book goes together with International Women’s Day. I didn’t do that intentionally! I hope you enjoyed International Women’s Day this weekend and hope that you continue to celebrate women throughout the month.

Invisible Women is the story of what happens when we forget to account for half of humanity. It is an expose of how the gender data gap harms women when life proceeds, more or less as normal … It is also about what happens to women living in a world built on male data when things go wrong.

Caroline Criado Perez, Invisible Women

Data is fundamental to the modern world. From economic development, to healthcare, to education and public policy, we rely on numbers to allocate resources and make crucial decisions. But because so much data fails to take into account gender, because it treats men as the default and women as atypical, bias and discrimination are baked into our systems. And women pay tremendous costs for this bias, in time, money, and often with their lives.

Celebrated feminist advocate Caroline Criado Perez investigates shocking root cause of gender inequality and research in Invisible Women, diving into women’s lives at home, the workplace, the public square, the doctor’s office, and more. Built on hundreds of studies in the US, the UK, and around the world, and written with energy, wit, and sparkling intelligence, this is a groundbreaking, unforgettable exposé that will change the way you look at the world.

Thrown together on their first case, Eleri and Donovan must deal with a charismatic cult leader and his true-believers. The cult is mixed up with several decade-old kidnapping cases and the missing daughter of a prominent FBI Agent. As Eleri and Donovan dig deeper, they discover that NightShade’s mysteries aren’t coincidence.

Micah is closing in on a killer. But her investigation draws the killer’s attention, and she finds herself in the middle of an operation that could mean the end of her career—or worse, her life.

+ About Virtually Harmless

From USA Today Bestselling Author, P.D. Workman, comes a gripping techno-thriller, part of a multi-author series tied together by an interlocking cast of characters, all centered around the fantastic new promise of high technology and the endless possibilities for crime that technology offers, in a world where getting away with murder can be not only plausible, but easy… if you just know how…

Micah lived a quiet, comfortable life, her involvement in law enforcement limited to the composite pictures that she produced with her computer and colored pencils.

But everything is turned upside down when she involves herself in the case of an infant found abandoned in the Sweetgrass Hills.

With the help of her knowledge of DNA and law enforcement contacts across the country, Micah is closing in on a killer. But her investigation draws the killer’s attention, and she finds herself in the middle of an operation that could mean the end of her career—or worse, her life.

★★★★★“The book will keep you guessing until the very end. Love how the author describes the characters in the perfect amount of detail leaving a little to the imagination.”

+ Author's Note

Author’s notes may contain spoilers!

I joined together with some other authors of the Do No Harm anthology to write a new high-tech thriller series.

I have long been fascinated with DNA analysis and the possibility of being able to create “virtual” composite sketches of the perpetrators of crimes without any eyewitness testimony. Back in the 80’s, I predicted that one day we would be able to analyze DNA to predict the color of the donor’s eyes and hair, among other things. We are now far beyond being able to predict eye and hair color and can predict facial structure, body type, and far more.

Take a look at the links in the Book Club Resources to see some of the real-world science being used today!

Of course, my character Micah Miller is able to go beyond the genetic data to the epigenetic data and environmental factors to predict even more about the appearance of the suspects in her cases.

+ Praise for P.D. Workman

“Every single one of [P.D. Workman’s] books has spoken to me in ways no one or almost anything else has. And I have found strength in the books I’ve read.”

“The way that P.D. Workman writes just flows amazingly and allows the reader to get really invested in a book.”

“This is one author I certainly will be looking out for, I can’t recommend her enough.”

“I’ll read anything by P. D. Workman that I can get my hands on.”

“Every book by PD Workman that I’ve read has been a gripping one, however different the genres are, going from lighter mysteries to really dark ones… this is one of my favourite, most dependable authors.”

“P.D. Workman is an incredibly versatile writer. No matter which of her books I read I am drawn into a great story and honestly, I don’t think I’ve followed another author that could go from cozy mystery to YA to a PI series dealing with mental health issues. Really enjoy her books!”

A realistic and beautiful story filled with suspense, heartbreaking friendship and loyalty. P.D. Workman brings you the intriguing story of Tamara’s struggle to make a life for herself after her incarceration. But things aren’t going to be easy.

+ About Tamara's Teardrops 1-4

Get all four books in the award-winning Tamara’s Teardrops series for one low price!

Follow Tamara French as she struggles to overcome the challenges of her past and reintegrate into the normal world.

This set includes:

1. Tattooed Teardrops

Winner of Top Fiction Award, In the Margins Committee, 2016.

Tamara had thought that when she got out of juvie, things would be easier. But before long, it seems like her life is spiraling into chaos.

2. Two Teardrops

Returning to juvie after breaching her parole, Tamara finds that everything is the same as when she left, and yet everything is different. She fights to reestablish her rep while increasingly troubled by emerging memories.

3. Tortured Teardrops

Tamara French is back in juvenile detention, and things are not going well. Have her experiences on the outside affected her so much? The staff can’t figure out what is wrong, and Tamara herself can’t explain what is going on with her.

4. Vanishing Teardrops

It was her second chance at parole, and Tamara knew this time that it wasn’t going to be easy. That ended up being the understatement of the century. In a new environment, trying to be a parent for the first time after years of not being allowed to make any decisions for herself, she didn’t know how she was going to make it.

+ Praise for Tattooed Teardrops Series

—For me, a sign of a good book is that it is a quick read, holds my interest front to back and I like the characters. This book met the mark on all three of those characteristics.

—A slimy villain, an eager-to-please side-kick and a heroine who simply wants to move on from her past make for an intriguing tale, indeed! A realistic and beautiful story filled with suspense, heartbreaking friendship and loyalty that will keep you reading until the very end.

—This book is refreshingly bold

—That was an amazing book…I couldn’t stop reading it! It took me about two days to read it and I ended up staying up late on a school night! Oh well, it was totally worth it! Thank you!

—Absolutely amazing, I just want to keep reading!

—No words, just pure happiness.

—I found myself rooting for [Tamara] all the way to the end.

+ Endorsements

Readers will appreciate the realistic details about Tamara’s release, her issues dealing with a foster family, her emotional triggers, and the challenges facing someone trying to maintain the conditions of parole. For those teens who love books where all that can go wrong does go wrong (isn’t that almost all of them?), this is a winner.

Excerpt from Shadow Tyrants

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I am currently reading Shadow Tyrants by Clive Cussler. In case you didn’t hear, Clive Cussler, recently passed away, so when I saw the book on my list, it seemed like an appropriate choice. Shadow Tyrants is book 13 in the Oregon Files series. I have read two or three others in the series. Lots of fun tech, adventure, and intrigue.

“We know what your secret cargo is,” the Chairman said. “We just don’t know where it is, and this is a pretty big ship you’ve got here. So tell me, Captain Tao. Where did you hide the chemical weapons?”

Clive Cussler, Shadow Tyrants

Nearly two thousand years ago, an Eastern emperor charged a small group with safeguarding secrets powerful enough to change the history of mankind. They went down in legend as the Nine Unknown Men–and now two rival factions of their descendants are fighting a mighty battle. Both sides think they are saving the world, but their tactics could very well bring about the end of humankind. Soon, Juan Cabrillo and his team of expert operatives aboard the Oregon find themselves trapped between two power-hungry adversaries, both of whom are willing to use shocking means to accomplish their goals.

Cabrillo and the team must divide and conquer as they fight dual threats, which include a supercomputer at sea and satellites that can wipe out technology across the globe–including the high-tech weapons on board the Oregon. The crew must rely on their unique skills to stop the tyrants in their tracks and save the earth from a dynasty of terror.
