Enjoying the season

Hard to believe that it is December already. I knew it was coming, but it’s here way before I’m ready for it.

What holiday traditions do you have for enjoying the season, rather than just focusing on gifts and one perfect day (when everybody probably comes down with the flu anyway… hasn’t everybody had at least one Christmas like that?) And this doesn’t have to just apply to Christmas. There are a lot of celebrations going on this time of year.

What do you do to take pleasure in the season? How do you keep your family close and yourself sane?

Maybe you have a special advent calendar, ways to serve others and spread the joy, a special tradition of hot chocolate, lighting candles, or attending a nativity or musical performance.

If you like to read (and what are you doing on my blog if you’re not into books?) you may be interested in the Advent Reader for Charles Dickens’s A Christmas Carol. This classic book has been divided up into 24 readings so that you can read it in the days leading up to Christmas. Even though we are a few days into December already, the readings are short and you can double up a few days to catch up.

Each day’s reading includes a scripture verse and discussion questions that may be helpful if you are using it for a family or small group devotional reading.

Dickens’ The Life of Our Lord is also available in the same format, and there is a reader that includes both stories in one.

Share how you find joy in the season in the comments below! I’d love to hear from you!

Excerpt from The Atomic City Girls

Did you have a great Thanksgiving? I hope you enjoyed time with your family and relaxing, thinking of the things you are grateful for. And if you stopped by here, you might have picked up a free copy of Her Work Was Everything and some other great freebies that were available for the weekend.

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I have just started reading The Atomic City Girls, by Janet Beard. In searching it up on Amazon just now, and realized that there is also a book called The Girls of Atomic City, on the same subject, so be aware if you are looking it up that there are two very similar books out there. The Atomic City Girls is billed as a novel and The Girls of Atomic City as a true story.

Both are billed as being in the tradition of Hidden Figures, which I love. I’m not sure yet that The Atomic City Girls will rise to that level, but we’ll see where it goes! So far I am just meeting the main characters, who are obviously destined to meet and get involved.

“You are now a resident of Oak Ridge,” it read, “situated within a restricted military area… What you do here, what you see here, what you hear here, let is stay here.”

Janet Beard, The Atomic City Girls

In November 1944, eighteen-year-old June Walker boards an unmarked bus, destined for a city that doesn’t officially exist. Oak Ridge, Tennessee has sprung up in a matter of months—a town of trailers and segregated houses, 24-hour cafeterias, and constant security checks. There, June joins hundreds of other young girls operating massive machines whose purpose is never explained. They know they are helping to win the war, but must ask no questions and reveal nothing to outsiders.

The girls spend their evenings socializing and flirting with soldiers, scientists, and workmen at dances and movies, bowling alleys and canteens. June longs to know more about their top-secret assignment and begins an affair with Sam Cantor, the young Jewish physicist from New York who oversees the lab where she works and understands the end goal only too well, while her beautiful roommate Cici is on her own mission: to find a wealthy husband and escape her sharecropper roots. Across town, African-American construction worker Joe Brewer knows nothing of the government’s plans, only that his new job pays enough to make it worth leaving his family behind, at least for now. But a breach in security will intertwine his fate with June’s search for answers.

When the bombing of Hiroshima brings the truth about Oak Ridge into devastating focus, June must confront her ideals about loyalty, patriotism, and war itself.

Thanks for great book deals

It’s American Thanksgiving, so it’s time for some great deals! First off, I’m starting with some freebies, including Her Work Was Everything, book #7 in the Zachary Goldman Mysteries.

About Her Work Was Everything

There’s something going on at Drake Chase Gould.

The death of intern Lauren Barclay is just the tip of the iceberg. When Lauren’s roommate hires Zachary to look into what was, on its surface, a tragic accidental death, Zachary gets more than he bargained for.

Not only is there definitely something up at “Chase Gold,” but he quickly realizes that one of the principals of the investment banking firm is Gordon Drake, Zachary’s ex-wife’s current husband. And that is a recipe for disaster.

Zachary is running into roadblocks everywhere he turns, and if someone at Drake Chase Gould is responsible for Lauren’s untimely death, then he is putting himself right in the murderer’s crosshairs.

The Zachary Goldman series are great and to put it bluntly this is the best one yet.

Then he finds that the skills he does have – tenacity, aggression, street-smarts – are exactly the ones he needs for his next case – hunting down a cold-blooded murderer who seems to know what his every step will be.

Sam is a private investigator from a working-class environment who works amongst the wealthy and privileged of the Cheshire set—those whose morals and levels of discretion are offensive to him and go against his own values, forged in a strong family environment. The mysteries he unravels become personal crusades against entitlement, wealth and the abuse of power. Although he doesn’t moralize, he gets angry when he sees people who lie, steal and murder to get their way. Like Philip Marlowe and Sam Spade he has a clear view of what the world is actually like, but he nevertheless wants evil-doers set straight and will do what he can to help.

Excerpt from Camino Island

Be sure to come back this weekend for some great Thanksgiving deals!

I just finished reading John Grisham’s Camino Island, which is a heist/intrigue novel rather than his usual legal thriller. As the plot surrounds rare manuscripts and writers, there is a lot of insight into the writing life and publishing world. Grisham draws together the disparate threads of the plot together for the grand finale and reveal.

He stepped behind some shrubs near the dorm, pulled a disposable phone out of his pocket, called Princeton’s 911 service, and delivered the horrifying news: “There’s a guy with a gun on the second floor of McCarren. He’s firing shots.”

John Grisham, Camino Island

A gang of thieves stage a daring heist from a vault deep below Princeton University’s Firestone Library. Their loot is priceless, impossible to resist.

Bruce Cable owns a popular bookstore in the sleepy resort town of Santa Rosa on Camino Island in Florida. He makes his real money, though, as a prominent dealer in rare books. Very few people know that he occasionally dabbles in unsavory ventures.

Mercer Mann is a young novelist with a severe case of writer’s block who has recently been laid off from her teaching position. She is approached by an elegant, mysterious woman working for an even more mysterious company. A generous monetary offer convinces Mercer to go undercover and infiltrate Cable’s circle of literary friends, to get close to the ringleader, to discover his secrets.

But soon Mercer learns far too much, and there’s trouble in paradise—as only John Grisham can deliver it.

Writing for Nanowrimo

If you’ve been following me here for a while, you know that I generally participate in Nanowrimo (National Novel Writing Month) every year. A lot of people complain that November is too busy for trying to write a novel, but thousands of people around the world do it every year. Maybe it’s crazy to do it the month before Christmas, but is there really any perfect month to write a novel?

Like finding the perfect wedding date, it’s never going to happen. All you can do is plan things the best you can, don’t take on extra commitments, and leave as much of your holiday preparations as possible for after you’ve finished your novel.

How am I doing this year, you ask?

Last year I finished my novel on about November 28. It was over 150,000 words, I had attended an out of town conference, and my mother in law passed away. It was one year when I had serious doubts about whether I would be able to finish my book in the month of November. (You only need to write 50,000 words to “win” Nano, but my stories are longer and I prefer to finish the full novel within November.)

But back to this year. I finished my first draft on Monday this week. Not a 150,000 word blockbuster this time, no conference, and (so far) no deaths. At least not in real life, no comment on the book… I did end up taking on a major commitment in my non-work, non-writing life, which has meant a bunch of unplanned meetings, emails, and various administrative tasks. And that’s life. It happens in November, just like any other month.

I enjoy Nano. If you are someone who does not enjoy writing at this speed or who “fails” to reach your 50,000 word (or other) goal, don’t beat yourself up. If life gets in the way, don’t let it get you down. Prize the words you write, and keep your balance. Enjoy the journey.

Excerpt from Badlands

Friday was launch day for Her Work was Everything, Book #7 of Zachary Goldman Mysteries. Check it out and pick up a few other new releases as well!

I just finished reading Badlands, book #3 in C.J. Box’s Highway series. I rarely end up reading series in order, but in this case I have actually read books 1 and 2 (in that order!) The listing for the series on Amazon is a bit wonky. Book 1 is not listed as part of the series. In case you are trying to read them in order, book 1 is Back of Beyond. Although I was not happy with the death of a main character in book 2, I enjoyed the FAS character Kyle Westergaard—although, he did not have the same issues as the FAS children I have known. Box is a great storyteller and I really enjoy following the twists and turns of the investigations.

Kyle twisted around and looked behind him. He remembered he’d seen something small and white eject from the rolling car. It was bigger than he’d thought, though: a thick bundle of something.

C.J. Box, Badlands

Twelve-year-old Kyle Westergaard dreams of getting out of Grimstad and leading a better life. Even though Kyle has been written off as a “slow” kid, he has dreams deeper than anyone can imagine. One day, while delivering newspapers, he witnesses a car accident and takes a mysterious bundle from the scene. Suddenly he’s in possession of a lot of money—and packets of white powder—and Kyle can’t help but wonder whether his luck has changed…for better or for worse.

When the temperature drops to 30 below and a gang war heats up, it’s up to Cassie to help restore law and order. But is she in over her head? As she is propelled on a collision course with a murderous enemy, she finds that the key to it all might come in the most unlikely form: a boy on a bike named Kyle. He keeps showing up where he doesn’t belong. And he seems to know something that Cassie does not about what lies beneath the surface of this small and troubled town…

Mind in Chains

It was spring in the Midwest and the perfect storm was brewing.

A scientist of considerable renown, Dr. James Conroy, Jr., was leading a grassroots movement to improve access to medical treatment in the United States. At the same time, a group known as the Crusaders for Common Sense was rallying around the cry, “Stop Playing God with Medicine.” Claiming that medical science merely maintained the body while the soul rotted from within, they stood opposed to Conroy—violently opposed.

Like most residents of St. Louis, Missouri, Sam “Doc” Price and Nicole Veles watched in horror as the violence escalated. But after a noted medical researcher was attacked at Nicole’s apartment, she and Doc were plunged into a world of domestic terrorism.

Doc found an unlikely ally in FBI Special Agent Rebecca Marte. Together, they tried to make sense of the Crusaders’ actions that defied all logic. The terrorists showed no fear of identification—or even death. In the end, Doc risked everything he loved in a final, deadly gambit with the Crusaders, only to find that the cost of his ploy might be more than he was willing to pay.

Excerpt from Winter in Paradise

Hope you had a chance to pick up a copy of He Was Not There and some other freebies this weekend! And are you looking forward to the release of Her Work Was Everything, book #7 in the Zachary Goldman Series? I am!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

I picked up Winter in Paradise by Elin Hilderbrand, which was billed as a mystery, but it is far closer to literary or domestic thriller so far. There is no investigation into the death of the main character’s husband and the others in the helicopter with him, and I’m not even sure at this point that they’re actually dead. Things are very suspicious…

She had spoken to Russ, they had quarreled, and right after they hung up, Irene considered calling him back, but she refrained. There was nothing less attractive than a needy woman—and besides, Russ was busy.

While almost everyone, including the police detective whom he consults regarding his sister’s assault, feel that there is virtually no chance of solving a thirty-year-old cold case, Zachary brings his considerable skill, perseverance, and tenacity to bear and achieves the impossible. This is a compelling story of family misfortune, child abuse and neglect, and of the inadequacies and challenges of the foster care system. Zachary’s devotion to a sister who, in truth, is nearly a stranger to him is inspiring. His dogged determination and unrelenting resolve to help another individual, regardless of his own problems or limitations, make him a remarkable and uniquely appealing character. The engaging characters, the intricately detailed storylines involving relevant and provocative issues, and the beautifully crafted flow of narrative make the stories in this series enthralling, entertaining, and completely addictive. I am eagerly looking forward to the next one.

Excerpt from The Beekeeper’s Apprentice

Halloween is over, and I hope you found some great spooky and mystery reads the last couple of weeks. Now… looking forward to American Thanksgiving and Christmas. Tis the season!

Teaser Tuesdays is a weekly bookish meme. Read the rules and more teasers at The Purple Booker. Anyone can play along.

This week I am reading Laurie R. King’s The Beekeeper’s Apprentice: or, On the Segregation of the Queen (Mary Russell and Sherlock Holmes Book 1). I’ve read a number of Sherlock Holmes mysteries, including one with a female Sherlock Holmes (Study in Scarlet Women). This one gives Sherlock a new apprentice, a young woman who meets him after his retirement and studies under his tutelage. There are a number of smaller mysteries within this book. I’m not sure whether that trend continues, or whether I am now onto the “main” mystery.

And I was horrified: Here I was, standing before a Legend, flinging insults at him, yapping about his ankles like a small dog worrying a bear.

Laurie R. King, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice

In 1915, Sherlock Holmes is retired and quietly engaged in the study of honeybees in Sussex when a young woman literally stumbles onto him on the Sussex Downs. Fifteen years old, gawky, egotistical, and recently orphaned, the young Mary Russell displays an intellect to impress even Sherlock Holmes. Under his reluctant tutelage, this very modern, twentieth-century woman proves a deft protégée and a fitting partner for the Victorian detective. They are soon called to Wales to help Scotland Yard find the kidnapped daughter of an American senator, a case of international significance with clues that dip deep into Holmes’s past. Full of brilliant deduction, disguises, and danger, The Beekeeper’s Apprentice, the first book of the Mary Russell–Sherlock Holmes mysteries, is “remarkably beguiling” (The Boston Globe).
