Review – Certainty of Deception by Jeanne McDonald

the certainty of deception
 by
Jeanne McDonald

cooltext1310418041

The Certainty of Deception by Jeanne McDonald is the second in the series, the follow up to The Truth in Lies, which was released in 2013. In the first book, we met Drew and McKenzie, and watched them fall in love despite the complications in their lives, and the fact that Drew’s girlfriend (Olivia) was McKenzie’s best friend.
The second book picks up where the first left off. Drew has been blindsided by Olivia’s announcement that she’s pregnant with his child, and McKenzie flees to her home state of Texas in order to escape the pain. As far as she knows, Drew is going to get back with Olivia and raise their baby, because that’s exactly what Olivia wants her to think.
As always, Jeanne’s prose is beautiful. Descriptive without being flowery, it sets the scene perfectly, making me almost taste the salty ozone off the Gulf of Mexico, and hear the lap of the waves as they creep up the beach. Her characters, too, are real and fleshed out, and I found myself falling once again for Drew, as we learned about the pain of his past and his desperate hope for the future.
McKenzie, too, has her own path to tred. Her friendship with Olivia blinds her to certain truths, and the title of the book has never been more apt than the way Olivia tries to blindside them all with her connivance. I found myself rooting for both McKenzie and Drew, desperate for them to get back together, to show Olivia that she couldn’t step in the path of true love.
Without giving away any spoilers, this is the second in a trilogy, so not all ends are neatly tied by the finish of the book. But that really didn’t matter, because I’m desperate for more of Mickie and Drew, and can’t wait for the third book to come out.
Five well-deserved stars to this hugely enjoyable book.

Summary:

After years of living in the darkness of his past, Andrew Wise, a young attorney working for his family’s law firm in Sarasota, Florida, has finally broken free of the demons that haunt him.  Wealth, success, happiness, and true love; everything a man could ever dream of, was right at his fingertips.  Or so he thought.  But in the blink of an eye, all of that changed.  Upon discovering that his ex-girlfriend, Olivia Hamilton, was pregnant, Drew fell back into some old habits, which led to him losing the one person that mattered the most in his life – McKenzie Evans.

When McKenzie left him and returned to Texas, Drew was beside himself.  The night before she left, he made an agreement with her best friend Jared Christopher, that he would give her time and space to come to grips with the fact that he’d fathered her best friend’s child.  Now, two months later, he feels as though he held up his end of the bargain, Drew can’t take their separation any longer.   With his

brother’s wedding mere weeks away, Drew devises a plan to win McKenzie back.

Under the guise of a bachelor getaway for Gavin, Drew, along with his brother and Jared, jets off on an adventure to the panhandle of Texas.  There, he will learn what made McKenzie who she is and will find strength within himself that he never realized existed.

In this charming sequel to The Truth in Lies, Drew and McKenzie discover that not everything is as it seems, forgiveness is a matter of acceptance, and true love really can conquer all.

Excerpt:

“Evans’ Bodyworks, McKenzie speaking,” her sweet voice serenaded me like a siren’s song.
The wind pushed from my chest in the most orgasmic of ways.
I closed my eyes and allowed the intense rush of relief blow from my chest.  For the last two months, I’d called her office just to hear her voice.  She’d changed her cell phone number to an Amarillo number after leaving, but Evans’ Bodyworks was a listed number.  As per my agreement with Jared, I never said a word.  I simply listened to her until she hung up.
“Hello?”  I shivered with delight at the sweet timbre of her tone.
Since her departure, I’d taken up sending her flowers every Monday, simply to brighten her week. The phone call was to brighten mine.
“Hello?  Anybody there?”
Oh, God, that Southern drawl.  She’d commented several times about how much she hated her accent.  “I sound like a backwoods hick,” she’d

complained.  She didn’t sound like a hick to me.  On the contrary, I could’ve listened to her talk all day long if given the chance. Drops of rain splattered to the ground.  I looked up at the sky.  It appeared the sun was going to lose the battle of the clouds after all.  Not that I minded, I loved the rain.  The rain held a sentimental value to me.  It was a rainy night where I first made love to McKenzie.  Rain was a good thing.  It brought life and in my case, it brought love.
I closed my eyes to recall the smell of her skin mixed with the rain.  Shadows of her danced in the recesses of my mind.  I swallowed hard, thinking of how it felt to have her smooth skin pressed against mine.  Every minor detail displayed with vivid accuracy in my consciousness.  Her shimmering blue eyes sparkled, her playful smile, and the way her golden hair fell in front of her face when it was wet.
“Andy?  Is that you?” she whispered.
Tha-thump.
My heart skipped a beat at the sound of that nickname on such beautiful lips.  Only Mickie was allowed to call me that.  Just because my name was Andrew, didn’t mean people should call me Andy. Andrew or Drew was fine with me, but never Andy.  That was my twin sister’s nickname, after all.
I sprang to my feet in a single bound, and looked around the beach.  It was still fairly empty.  Just a few runners making their way to their cars before the rain picked up.
“I guess not,” she faltered.
The sadness in her voice chipped away another piece of my mangled heart.  She missed me.  The evidence was there in the sound of her voice.  Fine, the evidence was hearsay, but this wasn’t a court of law, so it was admissible. She called me by name, hoping it was me on the other end of the line.
This was what I’d been waiting for.  I needed to know that she missed me too, that I wasn’t alone in my heartache.  I wanted to reveal myself, but I feared it would ruin my upcoming plans.  Only one person knew what I was about to do and that was because he was intricate to my plans.  All I needed was for Jared or Gavin to get wind of my trip to Amarillo.  There was no doubt in my mind that they’d try to stop me. So, instead of acting on instinct, I sat there like a fool, listening to her breathe.
Click.

The phone went silent.
For several seconds I stood, unmoving.  She had spoken to me.  To hear her call me by name was an answer to my prayers.  It only solidified my

decision to get off of my ass and fly to Texas. I’d waited like Jared and Gavin demanded.  Two long, miserable months, I’d waited.  Not a single drop of liquor had touched my lips since that night, no matter how bad I wanted a drink.  I’d been patient, keeping my distance, well, in a way.  Sure, the flowers didn’t equate to distance, but she hadn’t told Jared about them as far as I knew.  I was sure if she had, I’d never hear the end of it.  So, to me, that was a signal that she wasn’t over me any more than I was her. They were lucky I’d lasted this long. Patience was not one of my virtues. The time had come, and I was getting my girl back.
My mind released me from its temporary prison, allowing my heart to say what it needed to say.  “I miss you,” I whispered, breathless.

About the Author:

Jeanne McDonald began telling stories at the ripe young age of five, when her mother considered the truth to be a lie due to her extensive embellishment to the retelling of an event.  She wrote her first short story when she was twelve years old, and at the age of sixteen she tried her hand at poetry.  She reconnected with her love for writing in 2010 thanks to the encouragement of a dear friend.

Her passions include a “mild” Starbucks addiction, music, reading, quotes, movies, and romance.  When she’s not spending time with her family, she can be found reading, writing, chatting with her friends or diligently working toward her bachelor’s degree in Speech Pathology and Audiology.  A proud Texan, Jeanne currently resides in the Dallas/Fort Worth area with her family.

If you’ve arrived from Jeanna E. Mann’s blog, hi and thanks for clicking! This week’s questiocertaintyns are brought to you by Jeanne McDonald, whose amazing new book The Certainty of Deception  will be published this week!

1.  How did you go about choosing the names for your characters?

A funny story about this. I’ve been writing ever since I was a child (Enid Blyton was my go to writer in those days. I used to dream of lazy days by the tennis court aspartacusnd midnight feasts by the pool!) And in every single one of those stories I wrote as a kid I called my heroine ‘Claire’. Why, you may ask? Simple – that was my best friend’s name, and who better to cast in every story than the person I liked the most.
Hopefully my more recent characters are slightly more sophisticated than those multitude of Claires, but that doesn’t make naming them any easier.
My go-to resource when choosing names nowadays is to look at the most popular names for the year of the character’s birth. The lists tend to have a choice of 100, which is more than enough for me.
I also take into account where they are from, the names of the supporting characters (it would be a little confusion to have an Ella and an Emma), and finally (perhaps most importantly) whether the name ‘suits’ them. It isn’t always easy as you can see!

2.  Where did the inspiration for your current book come from?

My current work-in-progress is set in the same ‘world’ as the book that’s due to be published in the fall of 2014. The first in the series is called ‘Coming Down’ and the second has a working title of ‘Breaking Through’.
Coming Down was only ever supposed to be a stand alone, and it certainly has no cliff hanger or unresolved story. But two supporting characters–friends of the heroine–stood out to me so much that I felt they deserved their own book. Breaking Through is about the strains that a change in direction can put on a marriage. The couple start out strong, but then they have a baby, and the band the husband has been playing in for years suddenly breaks through and becomes famous, taking him away from his family when they need him most.
Where did I get the inspiration for both these stories? I guess firstly I wanted to base a book in the part of London I love the most–the East End. Where this was once a run-down part of the city, nowadays it is up and coming. Plus there have always been the more salubrious parts–Islington springs to mind–but places like Shoreditch and Hoxton have become our equivalent of Greenwich Village in NYC.
The second reason for writing the book was that I wanted strong female characters. In both books, they are fighting against circumstances, but they get through their trials by working hard, not by leaning on a man for support all the way. That doesn’t mean there’s no romance involved–quite the contrary–but they don’t expect the men to solve all their problems.

3.  What methods do you use to ensure you have no plot holes (journal, storyboard, outline, editor, etc.)?

Ooh, good question. I tend to be a plotter, rather than a pantser (although I’m trying to be less anal about it) which means I can try to iron plot holes out before I even start. But this isn’t the whole story. I also revise religiously (about three or four times before anybody else even sees it), then plot hole have beta readers who comment with their thoughts. The next step in the process is sending it to my editor, and finally before I ever hit ‘publish’ I let my husband read it.
To say Mr E is anal is an understatement. He writes policies and speeches for a living and has a keen eye for holes. When I give him a galley copy of my book, it’s always given back covered with red pen. And his little comments never fail to make me laugh.

If you’ve arrived from Amy Jarecki‘s blog, hi and thanks for clicking! This week’s questions are brought to you by Tessa Gray

1.  Do any characters you’ve written into your books remind you of yourself? Explain which ones and why.

just like me I suspect there’s a little bit of me in a lot of my characters. However, even before I start writing my characters start to take on a life of their own. They grow and develop in my mind, as I think about their back stories, their motivations, their experiences. I lead a fairly boring life – married, two children, very little drama, so if my characters were just like me then the story really wouldn’t be very exciting to read. As well as that, one of the things I love about writing is the fact I can create new worlds with people who aren’t like me. It’s like playing dress up, but with words!

2.  Was there a teacher or mentor in your life who helped nurture your writing?

mentor There have been so many people who have had a big influence on my life. The first person who taught me the love of reading was my mum, and from that grew a love of writing. As I started to write for publication, I found an amazing group of friends–writers, readers, editors–who have all taught me so much about the written word. It would be hard to narrow it down to just one person!

3.  Every author has that moment when they doubt their ability to write. When that happens to you, how do you pull yourself up by the bootstraps and continue? What do you do to inspire yourself?

true grits
We all have setbacks. You only have to read about the now-successful authors who were rejected by publisher after publisher to realise you’re not alone in this game. Becoming a writer means opening yourself up to criticism–both good and bad–and this can make you over-sensitive. So what I do is remind myself how lucky I am to be doing something I love, and even better I’m able to share it with others. Yes, there are days when I feel low and sensitive, but when that happens I either bury myself in a book (always my favourite pastime) or I remind myself that the good parts of being a writer far outweigh the bad. I’m so lucky to have great friends and readers who I love talking to, and I wouldn’t give that up for the world.

Release Day – Puddle Jumping by Amber L. Johnson

We are so excited to be able to announce the arrival of the newest book by Amber L. Johnson, PUDDLE JUMPING.  It is available in both e-book and paperback.

When it comes to love there’s no such thing as conventional.

Everyone thinks Colton Neely is special.

Lilly Evans just thinks he’s fascinating.

Once friends when they were younger, their bond is cut short due to her accident prone nature and they go their separate ways. Years later, they meet again and Lilly learns that there is something special about the boy she once knew, but she has no idea what it all means. And she’s not sure if she’s ready to find out.

When he walks through the corridor of her school the first day of her senior year, she knows that it’s time to get to know the real Colton Neely. The more she learns, the deeper she falls.

Their friendship grows into love, even as Colton does not express it in words. But one decision threatens to break down the world that Lilly has tried so hard to integrate into and she must figure out if the relationship can survive if they are apart.

Amber is a full  time mom, full time wife, is employed full time, and writes when she can. She believes  in Happily Ever Afters that occur every day – despite the obstacles that real life serves up on a regular basis. Or perhaps they’re sweeter simply because of them. She always has 2 rubber bands on her wrist, a song in her head, and too much creamer in her coffee cup that reads ‘Cocoa’ – because she’s a rebel. If she’s not at her desk, with her boys, or behind the computer, she’s supporting live music with her arms raised above her head and eyes closed, waiting for the drop.

Amber’s musical suggestion for this book is Ten Feel Tall by Afrojack (ft. Wrabel)

Romance Weekly Chat Do you like to read romance novels? Wouldn’t you like to know more about your favorite authors? Well you came to the right place! Join the writers of Romance Weekly as we go behind the scenes of our books and tell all….. About our writing of course! Every week we’ll answer questions and after you’ve enjoyed the blog on this site we’ll direct you to another. So come back often for a thrilling ride! Tell your friends and feel free to ask us questions in the comment box.

If you’ve arrived from Susan Peterson Wisnewski’s blog, hi and thanks for clicking! This week’s questions are brought to you by Jami Denise.

1.  When writing your novel, do you know how it’s going to end before you write, or do you write from start to finish?

There’s a lot of talk about the pros and cons of plotting and pantsing (ie, flying by flying pantsthe seat of your pants) but in reality I find I do a mixture of the two. Whenever I start a book, I have a clear idea in my head of the characters, the situation, and the main plot points. Sometimes I’ll do a chapter by chapter outline, but the more I write, the more I like to see where the characters take the story. Sometimes it will veer completely off, and they’ll surprise me (and make me go back and have to replan, dammit!)
However, if there are a number of complex plot turns, I find chapter outlines to be really useful. For Fix You, for example, the story covers 12 years, and I really needed to plan each chapter in detail. My chapter outline for that ran to three, very descriptive pages!

2.  How do the people you know impact your writing? Are you influenced by friends and family for your characters?

I’d like to say I have a crazy family who are constantly inspiring my work, doing unbelieveable things and generally making my writing life easier. However, as much as I love them, my family keep thwarting me by being so mundanely normal. That doesn’t meancrazy family I can’t get any inspiration from them, though. I’m always watching the way people react and interact, looking at body language and facial expressions for use in future stories. And to be honest, my family is so supportive, loving and all round amazing, I wouldn’t change a single thing about them!

3.  Describe the hero in your current WIP in three words.

Hot. Tattooed. Father.

stephen james

In my fevered imagination, he looks a lot like model, Stephen James! So there’s that…

To My Husband on Father’s Day #fathersday #sappy

love

An Ode to My Husband

There’s something amazing about the way you held our baby in your arms. The curve of your bicep, the gentleness of your hands. When I looked at your face I could see wonder, contentment. The face of a man who had never seen magic before.
I adore you.
Sometimes, when we first met, I used to imagine what it would be like to have a child together. White linen perfect, these ponderings would have us wandering on a beach, my skirt floating in the wind, your jeans turned up to escape the surf. And though these daydreams seemed perfect, they dull against the reality that’s you.
Perfect is too prosaic a word. It’s the jagged little failings that make you amazing. The ones we cut our fingers on. The ones that bleed. The harsh words that escape in the drugged half-light. The way we’d beg each other to take this one. Just this one.
Together, we burned. And together, we rose again.
The perplexing thing about children is they grow. Cell by cell, they replicate, obliterate. Take up space in the world where once there was nothing. Like bubbles, they expand, drift, move away from us. Until all we can do is stand together and watch as they float up into the sky.
And say, “We made this.”
When I look at you now, I still see the boy. He’s become a man. It isn’t age that’s made him this way, but experience. Love. The patience that people so rarely exhibit.
I love you.
It’s too easy to say. To write it. But the emotion is in every cell in my body. I breathe it, exhale it, can’t do anything but live it. The world is a better place because you are there.
Because you are mine.
I’ll always be yours.

The Electronic Age

writing I often lament that due to the advent of emails, text messages and IMs, we are losing the art of letter writing and journalling. That we won’t be able to hold these things in our hands and read them again and again, letting our memories transport us back to those days, remembering the people we used to be.
However, I’m absolutely delighted to say I’ve just proved myself wrong. I was having a little internet browse this morning, and remembered an old blog I used to have when the family and I moved to Washington DC back in 2005. And though I can’t for the life of me remember the log-in details for it, I still remembered the name of the blog and the url, so I typed it in, and was instantly transported back down memory lane.
It was amazing. Right there, on the screen, I relived the stories from when my now 14 and 12-year-old were tiny, only 4 and 6 years old. In the blog I’d detailed funny conversations I’d had with them, like the one below:

SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 10, 2006

Genetically Modified Meat

Sample of conversation with my eldest earlier today:

Me: ‘What’s your favourite dinner?’

E: ‘Roast Dinner’ (good girl – English tastes rule supreme)lambcow

Me: ‘What sort of roast dinner?’

E: ‘Lamb.’

Me: ‘That’s good’

E: ‘What sort of beef is lamb?’

Me: ‘Do you mean what sort of MEAT is lamb?’

E: ‘No. What sort of beef is lamb?’

Me: ‘Lamb isn’t beef, it’s a meat.’

E: ‘Uh?’

Me: ‘Where does lamb come from?’

E: ‘Lambs?’

Me: ‘Yes. And where does beef come from?’

E: ‘Cows?’

Me: ‘Yes. So what is lamb?’

E: ‘A kind of beef?’

Honestly, I was so delighted to see, written in down, an example of one of the many funny, crazy conversations I used to have with my kids when they were little. And if the internet–and blogging–hadn’t been invented, I probably never would have written it. So I’m taking back everything I said about the internet killing letter writing and memories. Instead, it’s not only allowed me to recover happy memories, but let me share it with my teenager, who couldn’t stop giggling.

shut my mouth

Hope you all have a great weekend,

Carrie Pink

Excerpt:

“I heard you were back.” I groaned internally as Mario spoke from behind me in the

laundry room a little later. “Did Miss S put you on lockdown again?” he mocked.

“You’re not funny, Mario.” I didn’t even look up at him as I continued to fold my

clothes.
“I really thought I’d break you while you were cooped up in here. I was hoping

you’d take your frustration out on me.” By the level of his voice, I could tell

that he was right behind me. I turned around quickly, pushing his chest before

he laid a finger on me.
“How many times do I have to tell you, this isn’t a game? I’m not fucking

interested!” I seethed, barging past him. Mario grabbed my waist, trying to

pull me toward him.
“Another few weeks and I would have had you. You wouldn’t be a Seductor if you weren’t

addicted to sex like me. You’re only holding back because you don’t want to get

attached. We’d be good together and you know it. I could give that sweet pussy

of yours a real good beating if you just let go.” I lost it, slamming the heel

of my shoe hard into his foot. Me get attached to Mario’s cock? I was

wrong—this guy was hilarious.  “Oww…you fucking bitch!” he yelled, hopping

around while clutching his injured foot. I didn’t even try to hide my snigger

as I walked past him. You deserved that, Mario!
I was still chuckling to myself when I bumped into Molly in the hallway.
“Sonia is ready to see you now.” She had a worried look on her face.
“What’s wrong?”
“Alicia came to get you.”
“She’s back? I thought she wasn’t due back for a progress report for another few

weeks.” My mind was racing. Why the hell would Alicia come to get me? It didn’t

make any sense; Sonia knew I hated her.
“Sonia wanted her back early. I’m not sure things are going too well with the

mission.” Molly followed me back to my room. “What if your theory is right and

Alicia has been with Oliver these last few months?” I dumped my clean clothes

on my bed, trying to compose myself. I was making Molly paranoid now, and that

wasn’t good.
“Why would Oliver become a target again? It doesn’t make any sense. You and Georgie

have been telling me that for months.”
“I don’t know, but it all seems a little strange to me.”
“You’re really not helping. You’re supposed to say that I’ve gone crazy. Do you know

how ridiculous this all sounds?” I threw my arms up in the air in frustration.

“Go and see Miss S and finally put your mind at rest. Georgie and I know it’s been

eating away at you. You need answers, Jade.”
“I can’t hide anything from

you two, can I?” I sighed, grabbing my phone. Molly was right—I couldn’t put it

off any longer. I needed to find out what was going on.

Alicia was standing outside Sonia’s office, talking on her phone when I arrived.
“No, really, it was me. I was clearly reading the signs wrong. I can’t apologize

enough.” Alicia’s eyes gleamed with smugness when she caught sight of me

entering Sonia’s office. What was all that about? “We’ll forget it ever

happened. I shouldn’t have crossed my professional boundaries. I don’t want

this to come between us…” I didn’t bother to listen to the rest of her

conversation as my eyes caught Sonia.
“Jade,” she said as she stood up from behind her desk. That was new. Sonia never stood

up for anyone. “You can close the door.” I closed it with a puzzled look on my

face. “Alicia doesn’t know I’m bringing you in on this mission yet.” It was

a mission! Thank God! No, wait…if Sonia was bringing me in, it could only mean

one thing! Damn it!
“The mission involves working with Alicia,” I groaned, taking a seat in front

of her desk. “Don’t get me wrong, I’m glad this is a mission, but do I

have to work with her? Can’t someone else do it?”
“Jade, I’m afraid you’re our only hope. I’m about to go against everything I’ve ever

done while running the Seductors, but I can’t see any other way around it.

Alicia has been on this case for almost two months and has gotten nowhere.”
“You want me to take over Alicia’s mission?” I frowned. Since when had Alicia had a

problem seducing a man? Everything started to dawn on me then, and I clutched

the arms of my chair tightly.
“I need the two of you to work together. This steal…it’s asking a lot. We aren’t even sure if it exists.” Now Sonia was

losing me. “If we secure what we’ve been hired to find, our clients are willing

to pay over one hundred million dollars. Maybe even more. There is no real

price for it.”  I was sure my mouth fell to the floor. One hundred

million dollars
? What the hell was the steal? “Jade, I’m asking a lot of

you here, but I’ve hit a wall. If Alicia can’t work her magic, it can only mean

one thing.” With bated breath, I was hanging on her every word. “He isn’t over

you.”

Desire

Summary:
Jade has worked as a Seductor in a secret organization for

five years now. Her main job? To earn the trust of her targets and secure the

object or information her company was hired to steal—by any means necessary.

She’s damn good at it, too.
With five years left on her contract, she is handed an

assignment that turns her world upside down.
Oliver Kirkham is the attractive, young CEO of Kirkham

Industries, a weapons manufacturing company, and is currently in possession of

some very important blueprints—blueprints that could change the way war, as we

know it, works. He’s extremely focused and doesn’t have time to date, at least

until he comes to the rescue of a shy but very alluring Jade Gibbs.
What happens when one night of passion turns into more? Will

Jade allow her feelings for Oliver to get in the way of her mission? Or will

she do what she was hired to do and secure the steal?

Romance Weekly #LoveChatWrite #LoveWriteChat – 10th June

Romance Weekly Chat Do you like to read romance novels? Wouldn’t you like to know more about your favorite authors? Well you came to the right place! Join the writers of Romance Weekly as we go behind the scenes of our books and tell all….. About our writing of course! Every week we’ll answer questions and after you’ve enjoyed the blog on this site we’ll direct you to another. So come back often for a thrilling ride! Tell your friends and feel free to ask us questions in the comment box.

If you’ve arrived from Jo Richardson’s blog, hi and thanks for clicking! This week’s questions are brought to you by Kim Handysides.

1.  What’s your ideal: alpha or beta and why?

alpha

This is a tough one, and depends on the context. In real life, beta every time. My husband and I are a partnership, everything is equal. If he tried to go all alpha on me I’m afraid he’d find out the real meaning of the red room of pain! HOWEVER, I love reading about alpha males. They’re hot and exciting and make for a great story. But, like reading a fairy story, I know it’s imaginary, and can enjoy it for what it is. Pure escapism. And there’s nothing wrong with that!

2.  Do you have a male buddy or mate you use for confirmation or inspiration when crafting your heroes?

I guess here is where I should say my husband. But I have to say not once have I used him for inspiration. Not because he isn’t perfect (because, pshawww), but because he’s mine, not another fictional heroine’s! Instead I tend to use pictures for inspiration, layering a character onto them, one that will mesh with the heroine but has enough faults to cause friction and a sizzling plot!

3.  What does any hero have to do to win your heart?make laugh

Make me laugh. I’m a sucker for a man with a sense of humor. As a wise woman once told me, you can close your eyes but you can’t close your ears. Good advice, people.
