How To Create A Monthly Short Hair Routine That Works | November 4, 2016

If you read my post from yesterday, you know we talked about Why You Need A Monthly Short Hair Routine. That was to break the ice on this topic that I think sometimes gets a bad rap. Hair routines do work and when used properly, they can be the difference between a long-term relationship with a head of healthy hair and a one night stand with a cute af hairstyle. If you read that post […]

Are You Afraid of Short Hair At Home? | November 3, 2016

If you’re scared, say you’re scared. But for real, don’t be scared. You don’t have to be afraid of short hair at home. Listen, I know that doing your hair at home may seem like an impossible task. I also know the added anxiety that comes with doing short hair at home. We don’t want to be out here in these streets looking a hot ass mess. I get it. I really, really do. I […]

Why You Need a Monthly Short Hair Routine | November 2, 2016

Any routine you can implement is good. Well…maybe there are some caveats to that, but you know what I mean. Routines are basically glorified habits. And because hair care is cumulative, a good routine can take you very far. When you DIY short hair, you will absolutely need to develop routines to keep your hair in its best shape. The health of your hair will be reliant on your ability to develop and then stick […]

It’s Time To Update Your Pixie Cut | October 27, 2016

Your hairstyle is old fashioned and it’s time to update your pixie cut.

Y’all, please excuse how blunt I’m gonna be in this post. I’m sorry, but not really. Some of y’all need this upcoming Come To Jesus talk I’m about to give you. Your short hair style is old fashioned, boo.

I would love to say that I feel bad saying it, but again, #sorrynotsorry. There’s this thing called analytics. I review mine all the time. Because my site is fairly new, as is my YouTube channel, I keep up with what works and what doesn’t work. I also get to stalk y’all just a little bit.

See, my analytics show me who follows me, what type of device you use to follow me, your approximate age and some other interests you may have. Now, what any of that has to do with this post is probably puzzling you right about now. Let me explain.

update your pixie cut

The largest portion of women who follow me on this site and on YouTube are between the ages of 25 and 45. That seems like a large gap to some, but not to me. I understand short hair. Hell, I write about it pretty much every day. I create video content about it on a weekly basis. It’s fair to say, I know what I’m talmbout when it comes to rocking a fire pixie cut.

That being the case, I recognize that women who wear their hair short share some basic similarities. Age differences aside, we are confident, comfortable with our looks, no nonsense women. We can handle the looks we get when we walk around with our faces on display. Ya feel me? I say that to say this, just because you may not be 25 years old, doesn’t mean you have to look like Grandma Moses.

Now, because I have a duty to let y’all in on the secrets that are vital to slaying this here short hair game, I feel it’s my job to tell some of y’all that you got us out here looking like grandmas and aunties, instead of Halle Berries and Meagan Goods. Not cool.

There’s no need for that. Today, we are going to talk about these outdated and played short hair cuts and short hair styles y’all got going on. And then I’m going to give you some pointers on how you can join the rest of us over here is 2016. Kaye? Kaye.

Your haircut is ugly! #sorrynotsorry

For any short cut hair style to make an impression, the cut has to be banging. Like all things, short hair cuts have evolved. There are aspects of a short haircut that make it current or not so current. If you take a look at a 90’s picture of say Halle Berry or Nia Long, and compare it to either of those ladies’ current versions of the pixie, you will be able to see that the overall haircut is still short and cropped, but it has definitely been updated.

In my How I Did My Hair In The 90’s video you will see how I mimicked the older version of the classic pixie cut. That was for a video. It was for a singular purpose and it looked a mess compared to today’s pixie styles.

If you would like to join us in 2016, keep the following tips in mind when updating your haircut, if you’re a DIY’er. If you go to a stylist, take a picture (A CURRENT PICTURE) and ask for an updated version using the points below. If you & your stylist are roommates in the time warp, consider getting your cut done by someone who has mastered the updated version of the pixie cut.

HOW TO UPDATE YOUR PIXIE CUT
GET YOU SOME NEW EDGES

Edges should be wispy. They should not be glued to the edge of your hairline like the railing on a curvy highway. There’s a little more length to edges nowadays. This allows for waving and other trends.

TEXTURIZE YOUR HAIR

Razor cuts that enhance texture are what’s hot. Gone are the days of the perfectly even and flat pixie cut. Textured cuts also create the illusion of volume. If you want a sleek look, you simply mold your hair flat and no one will know you have a texture cut. Here’s an example of how to create a sleek pixie style.

LET YOUR NAPE BE GREAT

So gone are the days of women walking around with an edged up nape that is faded like a man. No, no, no and NO again! Hair should be soft with little peaks that kiss the nape of the neck.

PUT ON A LITTLE WEIGHT

A little weight on the top of the style will bring it into 2016. Heavier bangs and sleek sides are current.

Don’t tell me you’re used THAT to do your hair!

If you still use Lustre’s Pink Oil, get off my blog right now! When I was prepping for my 90’s throwback video, I went looking for Lustre’s Pink Oil thinking that it would be hard to find. To my surprise and dismay, that mess was right there on the counter in Sally’s like it was normal. Like it was 1998! I was flabbergasted.

Products change because we learn what works to create looks that are more current. This means that companies have researched and developed products that allow us to create different looks than those products of the past.

Products like Aveda control paste have replaced Murray’s pomade. Why? Because we want a light hold and movable hair. The Aveda control paste is made with flax seed oil and that keeps the hair pliable. It keeps it from getting stiff.

Along those same lines, foaming wraps have replaced mousse. Don’t act like you never used mouse in your short relaxed hair. You did. I know you did. But don’t do it anymore, please.

The other devil of old school pixie styles is spritz. Please let it go. No more frozen curls and waterfall bangs. It just screams “I AM AN OLD LADY WITH A SHORT CUT” Not cute. Not cute at all.

Did you buy that at the Dollar Store?

Flat irons have replaced curling irons. Curling irons have a place. It’s a very, very, very small place that is dark and rarely visited, but hey, it’s a place. Flat irons are far more versatile and come in many different sizes and designs. Updated razor cuts and textured cuts (like mentioned above) stand out much more when you use a flat iron to style the hair.

If you have the tiny electric curling irons in your arsenal, just know that you are shaming us all when you put those tight ass grandma curls in your hair.

If you’re committing any of the aforementioned short hair styling sins, let me just tell you that Blockbuster closed, there’s this ‘new’ thing called Netflix. All the young kids are into it. You should try it. Also, myspace is over. Like, dead. That’s why you can’t log in anymore. It’s not your password. Trust me. Social media happened. You should check it out right after Netflix. There are a lot of current short hair style pictures on there that you can take to your stylist next time you go.

Get it together ladies. Represent us well out in these short hair streets. Update your cut. Update your hairstyling tools and update the products under your cabinet. The Murray’s can won’t even open anymore. It has rust on it. I’m just saying. #sorrynotsorry

Must Have Tools For Short Hair Care At Home | October 25, 2016

Must Have Tools For Short Hair Care At Home . Everybody that takes the plunge into doing their own short relaxed hair at home will need some tools in their stash to make the entire process easier.

In this post, I’ll go over the tools I think you MUST have to get salon quality results. I’ll only be talking about tools in this article. Products will be covered in a different post that will be up later this week.

All the products mentioned are available here on kayewright.com in the SHOP. Let’s get started.

MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR SHORT HAIR CARE – Hooded Dryer

I loathe sitting under the dryer. Whether you do your hair at home or get your hair done in a professional salon, you’re gonna have to sit under the dryer. Ain’t no way around it. #pixieproblems.

A hooded dryer will make molding your hair a breeze. If you are using a foaming product to set your hair before styling, you will want to dry it as quickly as possible. You also want your mold to dry as smoothly as possible. You can let your hair air dry and I’ve even heard of ladies using a hair dryer to set their mold, but a hooded dryer is the most efficient way to insure that you get a flat, smooth and polished mold.

The mold is the key to any short hair style. The Mold Matters. If you don’t believe me, watch Keys To The Perfect Mold to see why your hairstyles may not be turning out exactly like you want. Psst, it’s your bad mold.

MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR SHORT HAIR CARE – Flat Irons

Flat irons have become all around hair styling tools. You can create sleek looks, like this one, or you can completely curl your entire head with just a flat iron.

Choosing one that is best for what you need, is a personal choice. However, tourmaline and titanium plated flat irons work best. They distribute heat evenly and deliver a shiny result.

1 inch, ½ inch and even 3/8 inch flat irons are necessities for short hair styles. If you want a great result, invest in a quality flat iron and learn how to use it. Your hair styles will come out amazing and the overall health of your hair can be improved when you use quality heat styling tools.

MUST HAVE TOOLS FOR SHORT HAIR CARE – Hand Held Blow Dyer

Most styles start and end with the wet mold. But there are times when a blow dryer can also come into play while styling your short hair. There are styles that I create where the back and sides are molded while wet, and the top of my hair is styled using a hand-held blow dryer. Here’s the tutorial on such a style.

Blow dryers also come in handy when styling your hair in the days following the use of heavier products. Sometimes adding a little water and blow drying the hair can loosen up strands and make the hair malleable again. A good ionic blow dryer works great when you need to do this.

MUST HAVE TOOLS – Wide Tooth Comb/Rat Tail Comb

You need a comb! DUH! How else are you gonna do your hair? Which combs you use and when you use them, does matter. I use a wide tooth comb when my hair is wet. Using the wider comb to direct the hair before applying wrapping foam, prevents tangles and lessens the chances of unnecessarily pulling and tugging at wet strands of hair, which are fragile and prone to breakage.

Wide tooth combs are also great for creating feathered looks and combing hair in the days just prior to applying a relaxer.

Short hair is best styled with a rat tail comb. The tiny teeth make it easy to smooth out the short strands. The tail of this comb is the real star of the show, though. You can part your hair with the tail of the comb in sections where the hair may otherwise be too short to grip with your fingers.

A rat tail comb is also extremely useful when molding the hair while it’s wet. The closeness of the teeth make it easy to achieve a sleek mold. The back of the comb can also be convenient when you are going over a molded style and need to rid the hair of those annoying teeth marks.

This list is by no means comprehensive, but it is pretty much the meat and potatoes of what you will need to maintain your short relaxed hair at home and get great results. If you just want ok results, you can ‘get by’ with other tools. But we all know how that usually turns out. Two words – mango seed.

If you found this helpful, you will like my eBook too. The Short Hair Bedside Bible is available here. You can also click the DOWNLOAD button below to get your copy.

Did I leave out any tools that you can’t live without? Let me know in the comments and I’ll add them to the list. Until next time…I’ll holla!

Maintaining Healthy Edges With Short Hair | October 24, 2016

We have all seen the hilarious memes floating around social media. You know the ones about edges gone missing, edges needing a reboot and on the opposite end, edges that are apparently…on fleek (I can’t believe I just typed that).

My favorite are the ones where somebody is hawking $5 bags of edges. Different than the way we are bombarded with sales pitches from weave companies wanting to sell us 32 inches, the ‘edges’ are not sold in bundles, but baggies. Teeny tiny Ziploc like bags with small patches of hair stuffed inside.

The internet is the devil.

All jokes aside, you do need to pay attention to your edges ladies. It’s simply not cute when they betray you and leave. Nothing can ruin a hairdo, or your impression of someone, faster that some tore up or non-existent edges.

Short hair presents an even more complex issue because you just have less to work with. Long hair can camouflage frail spots on your head. A heavy bang can help, as can a strategically placed side swoop. But when you are about this here short hair life and you claim bald headed scallywag status, #pixieproblems are real and there is no excess hair to help you out.  It’s just you and your exposed temples out there. Trying to get through the day.

I’m not trying to make you feel bad or embarrass you. That’s not why I’m here. I’m here to help. So, I’m going to outline some things you can do to maintain healthy edges with short hair. These tips will work for you, unless you are dealing with a more serious medical issue. In that case, I would strongly recommend that you seek out the advice of a medical professional.

HEALTHY EDGES WITH SHORT HAIR – Neglect is a No-No

Don’t think you can blow off tending to your edges because you rock a short cut. It’s careless and plain out not true. Edges matter. Each night I tend to my edges and I have still had issues that caused me to pay even closer attention to how I treated my good ole baby hairs.

Oil your edges daily. Oil provides moisture, DUH! But it also lessens the risk of breakage because the hair won’t be brittle like it is when it’s dry.

Wrapping your hair at night is a good thing, but there is this thing called friction. When your hair rubs up against your scarf or your pillow or your sheets or your arm, there is friction. Dry edges that are not properly maintained can break or thin out under that type of consistent stress.

Here’s a video on My Night Time Routine for Short Relaxed Hair. In it, I show how I care for my edges underneath my wrap.

HEALTHY EDGES WITH SHORT HAIR – Product Placement

When using gels or edge control products, be aware of how much you use, how often you use and what the ingredients are. Pay attention to any changes you notice in your hair and take note of the product. Switch things up if you notice your edges thinning or breaking.

Also, don’t allow product to build up on your edges. The hair at the temples tend to be sparser and a bit more fragile. Products that are heavy can weigh those fine hairs down and … you guessed it, cause breakage.

Wash out products as needed and be mindful of how your hair reacts to what you put on your edges.

HEALTHY EDGES WITH SHORT HAIR – Do Deep Condition

Edges need the same things the rest of your hair needs to remain healthy. When you deep condition your hair, or even just when you apply regular conditioner, don’t forget to make sure you slather that product onto your edges too. Coat them well and let them soak up the benefits of the deep conditioner. They actually need it the most.

When I relax my hair, I will wait until the last 2 to 3 minutes to apply the relaxer to my edges. Because my hair is finer in those spots, it doesn’t require as much processing time. Immediately after relaxing, I condition my hair with a moisturizing deep conditioner. The very first place I apply it, is to my edges. That way, the product sits on the weaker edges longer than any other part of my hair.

Ladies, be careful how you treat your edges. You don’t want them to break up with you and leave you bald. I’m just saying. To see the products that I personally use on my hair, check out the SHOP. The oils I use, the deep conditioner I use and the relaxer I use are all there.

I hope these tips are helpful and until next time…I’ll holla!

Choosing A Fall Hair Color | Short Hair | October 20, 2016

Choosing a fall hair color isn’t something that has to be a problem. It’s not like hair color is mandatory. Especially not in the Fall & Winter months. Most people color their hair in the summer months. Me, I DO WHAT I WANNA DO dammit! I said it before when I wrote about Why I Am Not Natural…anymore.

What that means for me is that I usually color my hair in the fall and winter months. I don’t know why, I just do. That seems to be the time of year that I get the urge. Funny thing…my daughter walks out of the bathroom a few days ago and she had a head full of colored hair.

I asked her about it and she said, “I don’t know. I just felt like coloring it. Maybe it’s the change in weather.” She get it from her mama. LOL!

Back to short relaxed hair color. (she has long natural hair so she has no place on this here website) I tend to like 2 types of hair color: Rich and thick colors with lots of dimension and blonde. Datsit. Those are the only ones that appeal to me. That is probably why get the itch to dye my hair in Fall & Winter.

Richer tones feel cozy and warm and seem to go with the holiday season. Usually, I know right away what color I’m headed toward for the season. This year, though, I am back and forth between 3 separate colors.

fall hair color

Fall Hair Color – PURPLE

Rose gold, purple and oxblood. The purple I think may be out because it just seems a bit played. Everybody and their mama has had some version of purple. So, I’m kinda meh about the purple. Every now and then I do still see a picture of a beautiful purple hue that makes me excited though. We shall see.

Fall Hair Color – ROSE GOLD

Rose gold looks gorgeous every time I see it. I wanted to die my hair pink. Not my entire head, but I wanted to do the tips and add some highlights using pink. The issue with that ideas is that my hair is so black because I’m constantly battling these disrespectful ass gray hairs, like I talked about here.

That would present quite the issue with upkeep if I went for a color that light. I justify it in my mind by saying that I’d only dye the ends so it wouldn’t be too difficult to keep that up. Roots are a different story. But, I don’t know about the lies I tell myself. And bleaching my relaxed hair is an uphill battle that requires A LOT of maintenance and stress.

Fall Hair Color – OXBLOOD

Last but not least, is the front runner of the pack. Oxblood or maroon, depending on how old school you are, is looking like the winner. And I know, I know, it has also been done a million times. But…there’s something about oxblood that is timeless. It’s similar to jet black. It’s almost impossible to get it wrong (Smokey Robinson, Jermaine Jackson – I said ALMOST impossible!).

There are so many different tones and variations that I know I could change it up and stay within the same color range without getting bored. I could lighten the tones and darken them without completely killing my hair in the process.

Do y’all color your hair for Fall & Winter? What color should I do? Leave your thoughts in the comments. Until next time…I’ll holla!
