How to use social media effectively to grow your online presence

Welcome back!

Back in January, I was part of an online conference.

This conference gathered together 25+ people from the world of publishing. All the sessions were taped in advance and available at a time of the viewer’s convenience.

The reaction to this conference was off the charts! A large number of my audience members clicked on a link and took advantage of the free portion of the conference, or paid a bit extra to take advantage of some premium features.

I’m giving away the transcript to my interview for free – see it below.

Because the conference was so popular, the organizers are bringing it back! The offer is for full access to all the videos, transcripts, worksheets, etc. Click here to learn more!

If you decide to take advantage of this offer, I hope you learn a lot – and please drop me a note and tell me about it. I’d love to hear about your experience.

Email nightmares

Welcome back!

So…I’ve been spending the last few weeks (or more…) struggling with email. Email that people claim they have sent and I haven’t received. Email that I know I’ve sent that people aren’t receiving. Email that arrives in my inbox and looks like it has already been read. Email that is out of date order. You name it. It seems to be happening.

I work a lot of hours every day. If I spend time working out email issues this just puts me behind. Yet every time I turned around it seemed that I was trying to solve email issues.

I have always used GMail and several years ago moved to G Suite to wrangle my domain based email addresses. Back in January I started noticing that email I handle using G Suite would come in groups. One moment I had an empty inbox and the next the inbox was full of notes. Many seemed to be repeats of notification type emails I thought I’d deleted. I was wasting unbelievable amounts of time wrangling email!

Finally out of sheer frustration, I discontinued GSuite.

I spent several weeks sorting through outstanding emails – finding all sorts of previously unseen email. Every response I sent seemed to start with an apology. “Sorry, I’m so slow getting back to you.” “Sorry, I’m just now seeing this email.”

I have liked using GMail for the most part. I liked it when they offered to segment my inbox with 3 boxes – Primary, Social and Promotions as you can see in the graphic above. Awkward at first but I came to like the organization. Quite frankly, I also like the fact that I can wrangle email where ever I am using my home computer, my tablet or my phone. GMail makes that easy.

I’ve been working my way through my inboxes trying to sort things out, but as you can see above, I currently have 15,369 unread emails. Yes, most of it is junk – notifications emails that just need to be trashed, but it needs to be gone through in search of the emails that I actually need to respond to.

Imagine my horror when I spotted this yesterday:

It seems that GMail has new ways of subdividing my email. Apparently the category of “Forums” was hiding all sorts of email that I had been looking for. Don’t get me started on what I found amongst the “Updates” group.

Of course, at this point, in sheer frustration I shut down my computer and picked up my iPad and started reading. I was just too angry to wrangle email any longer.

So, smart people – what new type of hell is this?

Is this simply a setting on my email and I can click on something and make it go away? Weigh in with your thoughts! I’m simply too tired to figure out what is going on any longer and I need to make a change – any ideas?

Remote Work in the Coronavirus Economy

Welcome back!

Have you joined the millions of people trying to work in some fashion? Do you have kids at home that are trying to learn remotely?

Although I’ve worked from home for the better part of a decade I always knew that I was one of the only ones in my neighbourhood. I live in a commuter neighbourhood – most of my neighbours work somewhere else so by the time school goes in, it’s pretty quiet. My work tends to tick along just fine most days. I now realize that the internet system in my neighbourhood is not up to support the whole neighbourhood trying to work from home plus all the kids trying to learn from home. Things that used to be quite speedy are now painfully slow. We’re coping….

However, when I spotted this week’s infographic, I thought it was very topical. Hope you can pull some pearls of wisdom! Be sure to visit my favorite blog, Social Media Today and read the whole post.

Instagram Addresses Questions on Algorithm, Comment Pods and Verification [Infographic]

Welcome!

Instagram, like the other social media platforms, deliver content dependent on an algorithm. That being said….how does Instagram determine what to deliver to us in terms of content – and what of our content will it deliver to others.

I stumbled on today’s infographic listing a Q&A with the founder of Instagram and thought everyone would enjoy a little peek into the thoughts on this topic.

Enjoy! And be sure to drop by Social Media Today to read the full post here.
