STRONGER by Suzanne Jenkins

STRONGERby Suzanne JenkinsGenre: Romantic Suspense
Karen Pruitt and friends came to New York on a long weekend holiday sponsored by the airlines she’d worked for, meeting FBI Special Agent Michael Calder at a bar in Greenwich Village. “I couldn’t help hearing your accent,” he’d said, a lame pick up line at best but truthful.

“We’re from England,” she replied, smiling, sweeping him off his feet.

His love for her took him by complete surprise. Not looking for a relationship, Michael was twice her age and a confirmed bachelor, which he later realized he should have stayed. Grumpy, crotchety, irritable were words used to describe him around the office. Everyone noticed the difference on Monday; he was glowing.

“Isn’t it the woman who is supposed to shine from within?” His boss, Jeremy Fisher asked, the other agents laughing at Michael’s expense.

“I don’t know, but I can tell you, whatever this is, I like it.”

But after eleven years, and three children later, Karen never adapted to life in New York, and she fled back to England without Michael. Broken-hearted, Michael isn’t alone for long, dating a woman young enough to be his daughter, who is obsessed by walking in New York Fashion Week.

When his team puts a mobster behind bars, no one in Michael’s circle of colleagues and family will be safe. Will Karen be able to forgive him when his job threatens her life?

Chapter 1

Leaving her three children home alone as usual, she’d get in an early morning run. The sun was just below the horizon, a thin line of brilliant magenta fading to purple then to black overhead. Seeing the beginning of a beautiful morning was worth losing the sleep. It was about an hour earlier than her usual run. She had so much work to do that day that when her bladder woke her, she would take advantage of it and get an early start. Rain was in the air; she could smell it, a mossy, metallic scent, and the little bit of light at that hour lit a boiling sea, the whitecaps rolling in from as far as the eye could see.

“Maggie,” she whispered to her fourteen-year-old daughter, the oldest, “I’m going to go out for a run. I’ll be back in an hour.”

“What time is it?” Maggie moaned, her arm thrown over her forehead.

“Just six. I’ll be back in an hour,” she repeated.

Kissing her on the cheek, Karen Calder tiptoed out of the bedroom, out of the house, and into the frozen mist. Close to Cherry Lane, which lay between the house and a waist-high stone wall separating it from the Atlantic Ocean, she paused at the opening to a path that wound down the dune to the beach. She’d taken the path a hundred times, a thousand times, but at that hour the tide was still up a little far for a run.

The lane dead-ended just beyond the last cottage, so traffic was rarely a problem outside of the few year-round residents. A lone car, a dark, nondescript sedan, was parked down a bit behind her, but the lights flicked on, and it drove past Cozy Cottage. Even from a distance, the driver looked like a caricature, an Elvis impersonator, with a thick head of hair and dark glasses—odd for dawn. A cloud of exhaust in the cold trailed behind the car. Karen pulled her scarf up higher, laughing.

“People are so funny,” she muttered before stepping back onto the cobblestones.

Pacing her steps along the dusty lane, the air was cold enough that she could see her breath. The way stretched out ahead of her. It took a full mile to warm up, each step torture even for Karen, who was in excellent physical condition, and she longed to return home to her warm bed. She fought the battle to keep going until her muscles finally warmed up. Her breath matched her pace: ha in, na out, ha na, ha na, ha.

Running in the morning forced order upon her life—first caring for body and mind made her a better woman, leading to a better mother, friend, and colleague. Singleness was growing on her after two years, and she had no desire to integrate a man into her life with her three children. They were thriving, too.

The warm-up almost complete, no matter how many years she ran for health, that mile mark lurked ahead of her, and when she passed it, it was like magic. Legs limber, her body temperature comfortable in spite of the cold, Karen increased her speed, breaking into a sprint that she’d maintain for the next five miles.

Her scarf was up over her mouth, and it was soon saturated with condensation, so she pulled it down again, the cold air hitting her wet chin. In that maneuver, she was distracted, and he came at her from behind, grabbing onto her arm, knocking her to the ground with a blow to her head, and before she could scream, her mouth made contact with the pavement, teeth jarring, the taste of blood, and within seconds, she was out cold.

The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh by Carolyn Arnold

How You Can Save the World and Enter to Win a $175 Prize Pack!“If you like action-packed adventure books that will keep you reading well into the wee hours, I would recommend The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh.” –Jennly Reads

To celebrate the release of my second action adventure The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I’m offering up my largest prize pack to date! But, first let me tell you about the book…
When it came to writing The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh, I wanted to create a story in the same vein as City of Gold, maintaining what reviewers described as “a fast-paced action adventure” that is “akin to an Indiana Jones story set in modern times.” So in this second installment, archaeologist and adventurer Matthew Connor and his two closest friends set off for Egypt to save the world. I even splashed in a bit of the police action my readers know and love.

“Why does the world need saving?” you may ask, possibly skeptical. Well, an old friend and colleague of Matthew’s has discovered ancient hieroglyphics that hint at the whereabouts of an ancient Egyptian tomb and a mysterious treasure that is said to contain the knowledge of the universe. Beyond that, it can grant humans the ability to traverse Heaven and Earth, and it bestows whoever possesses it with great wealth and wisdom. Now, imagine something like that falling into the hands of terrorists or world powers set on domination… Needless to say, it could lead to global annihilation!

My hope is that The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh will provide readers with a thrill ride that digs into the depths of human nature when one is tempted by power. But if you’re looking for a slow build, this isn’t the book for you. Readers are immediately thrown into the heat of Egypt’s Western Desert, where Matthew’s friend Alexandria Leonard is about to make a life-altering discovery.

Here’s a snippet from the prologue of The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh (Matthew Connor Adventure series):
The sun had barely broken the horizon, but Alex was wide-awake and strapped into her safety harness. She had dreamed of this moment her entire life, and now that it was becoming reality, she could hardly believe it. Here she was at the age of forty and leading her first archaeological dig in Egypt’s Western Desert. Even more incredible was the fact that she and her team were on the brink of a monumental discovery.

They had detected a manmade tunnel that ran thirty-five feet beneath the ground and over 3,600 feet to the east. Where the tunnel ended, there was in a large open space that the ground-penetrating radar couldn’t identify.

Alex stood at the opening of the hole with her site foreman, Jeff Webb; a hieroglyphics expert named Jasper Blair; and two of four laborers, Seth and Timal. They would be responsible for lowering her down.

She took a deep breath, preparing her mind for the descent and the cramped space. Her team had only dug out a well of about four feet in diameter. The position she was in when she went down would be the way she’d stay, as there would be no room to flip over.

She wiped the back of her arm across her forehead to wick away the sweat that kept dripping down her face. She pinched her eyes shut, wishing she had her favorite blue sweatband from high school, when wearing one had been all the rage—back around the time when belonging to a Tape of the Month Club was the thing to do.

She let her long, blond hair down from the ponytail she’d had it in and redid it, tighter this time, pulling it into a messy bun. Back home in northern Michigan, she rarely put her hair up, reserving that for times when she was focused on her work or studies, but in this part of the world, she often wore it up. Even a warm breeze on the back of her neck was better than none at all.

“Good thing you skipped the second course last night,” Jeff teased her.

Not that size was an issue for either of them. She was lean and athletic, and while Jeff had a solid build, he was trim with narrow shoulders.

“Same goes for you,” she tossed back with a smile. She’d known him for years and worked on several digs with him. He’d been the one who had removed two of the stone bricks from the tunnel’s ceiling to create the small opening through which they could descend. He’d been down there to set up a radio module and transmitting antenna that enabled communication between whoever was underground and whoever was on the surface.

Jeff moved behind her and tightened her harness. “Ah!” She sucked air in through gritted teeth. “Maybe just leave enough room for me to breathe.”

He loosened the restraints slightly. “Good?”

She managed to slip her fingers between the straps and her rib cage. “It’ll do.”

He turned to face her again. “Here’s your radio.” Jeff handed her an earpiece that worked with the radio he’d put in place.

“Talk into it for me,” he told her.

She tapped a button on the earpiece and said, “Hello, hello, hello.” She smirked at her mock echo.

Jeff laughed. “I heard you loud and clear. In surround sound, actually. All right, one more thing.” He popped a miner hat on her head, and she fastened the chin strap. “I think it’s best if we lower you feetfirst so that you can be positioned upright in the tunnel.” Jeff’s demeanor became serious.

Alex nodded and looked down again. It was a good thing that she wasn’t claustrophobic or afraid of being suspended by a rope and lowered helplessly into the ground. And while she might not battle with many fears, part of her was as terrified as she was excited about the prospect of setting foot where no one—besides Jeff briefly—had likely been in thousands of years. But this was just meant to be a brief look-see, and she’d be going solo. When she set out in earnest to explore the tunnel, she’d take members of her team with her.

She reached for the gold chain around her neck and pinched the tiny pendant that dangled from it. The Eye of Horus, also known as the Eye of Ra, was an ancient Egyptian symbol of protection. Out here in the desert, she needed all the help she could get. She kissed it and tucked it back beneath her shirt.

“Are you ready?” Jeff asked.

She met Jeff’s eyes and flicked on the headlamp. “I’m ready.”

Jeff pulled an LED flare from his back pocket, turned it on, and tossed it into the hole. Watching the light descend emphasized just how far down it was to the tunnel.

Once it hit the ground, Jeff rolled his hand toward Seth and Timal. “You heard her. Down she goes.”

More sweat dripped from her brow, and she wiped her forehead again. And things were just heating up out here—if you could call already being a hundred degrees “just heating up.” As it was, waves of heat were cutting through the air like ribbons on the horizon, and it was only eight o’clock in the morning.

She looked around at her crew, steadying her thoughts and locking on to her resolve to make history. Great men and women made a habit of stepping outside their comfort zones, living on the edge, and testing out unchartered waters. And she wanted to be among them, to make a difference in the world by unearthing what remained of long gone great empires. Sometimes that required delving into the unknown.

She shook her fanciful musings aside. After all, they may not have discovered anything more than an empty tunnel.

She sat on the ledge, dangling her legs inside the hole. She tugged on the rope secured to her harness, which was connected to a rigging system that Seth and Timal would use to lower her. She glanced at Seth and Timal, confident in their abilities to guide her safely down and back up again. And with one more look at Jeff, she pushed off, letting herself become suspended.

Her heart thumped against her rib cage as she was lowered. She reached out and touched the makeshift walls that her men had put in place to prevent a cave-in. Her fingertips brushed against some sand, and it was slightly cool to the touch, but the air around her was still hot. A few of the granules sprinkled down the shaft.

About six feet beneath the ground, she felt incredibly alone. Although, it was also quiet and peaceful.

As Jeff’s form continued to become smaller above her and the space she was in became more shadowed, brief apprehension lanced through her. But the allure of what lie ahead silenced her anxiety.

If you can take the heat, grab your hat and sunscreen and strap yourself in for an unforgettable adventure. Order your copy of The Secret of the Lost Pharaoh today.

Writing isn’t my day job, however it is my joy and favorite hobby. I enjoy sending my friends new chapters nightly and hearing their reactions the next day. That is why I write, being published is just a bonus really. My real job is the same every day, but at night I get to be someone else and write about all these fun adventures and sexcapades:) When I’m writing you can find me on the couch, earbuds in and a full glass of wine beside me. Music inspires my stores, at the end of each book I list the playlist that helped me through writing the novel.
When I am not working or writing, I am reading. I go through about 3 books a week and I am 100% sure that I’m that annoying person at book-club that gets on to people when they are not keeping up with the monthly readings or suggest the movie is as good as a book (Sometimes I wish I could vote those people out of book-club like they do on Survivor. “The tribe has spoken”).

Excerpt

My phone lit up next to me on the couch and I grabbed it, answering in a rush.“David, what’s wrong?” My heart raced so fast I thought it might explode out of my chest.“Uh, is this Tiffany?” a man’s voice I didn’t recognize responded.“Yes, who is this?”“I have a Jagger here who needs to speak to you. Hold one second.”My heart, which had settled down the moment I realized David wasn’t on the phone, began to pick up the pace again. Why would Jagger be calling me? He made it clear he wanted nothing to do with us on Saturday.I made sure to keep that information from David until the next day. I wanted him to enjoy his birthday. He was hurt but loved the Ninja Boy comics Jagger bought him for his birthday gift.As for me, I cried a bit. Like a dork, I put the candy bracelet he got me under my pillow. It kept making weird crunching noises when I moved so I ended up cradling it next to my chest. Succumbing to the sugary smell, I chewed half of it. I fell asleep with bits of candy stuck to my lips and chin. When I woke in the morning, I realized it was too tempting having the thing in my bed.It now sits on my dresser like a broken dream. There were loud scraping noises and a boom before I heard Jagger’s voice.“I got it, Benson. I got it.” There was a pause before he started to speak again, “It’s not Benson, then what’s your name? Leo? I’ve been calling you Benson the whole time!”Jagger started to laugh. I wondered if he realized I was still on the phone.“Jagger?” I said.“Tiffany! Oh, sweet Tiffany. It’s so good to hear your voice.”“Nice to hear from you. Is there something you needed?”“You. I need to tell you something. But not here. This place is too grimy,” Jagger said and I heard some yelling in the background. “Sorry, Benson. Right, I mean Leo.”This back and forth had to stop. It was hard to say goodbye to him. I admit the warmth in my body upon hearing his voice made me a little eager but was this just another goodbye? Did he need to have me sign another document only to walk away again?“I’m coming over,” Jagger said.“That’s really not necessary. Can’t you—”He hung up.I stood and went into the bathroom, inspecting my appearance. Running my fingers through my hair, I wondered if I should put it up. Maybe a little makeup or a skirt?Leaning my hands on the gray marble countertop, I sighed. What was I doing? Jagger’s job was everything to him. It was selfish to expect him to risk so much for me.The buzzer went off.“Wow, that was quick,” I mumbled to myself.I did one last once-over before leaving the bathroom and headed to the front door. Pressing the call button, I said, “Hello?”“Sweet Tiffany.” I heard Jagger with clarity and trepidation.Buzzing him inside the building, I waited. My hands fumbled with my fingers. My hair chose that moment to settle stray strands onto my cheek, then my nose, and every second I was pushing away another ticklish wisp.I needed to do something so I went to my cabinet of delight in the kitchen and grabbed a lollipop. It was cherry and I could barely taste it thanks to my nerves. Finally, there came a knock on my door.Taking a deep breath and a hard suck, I made my way to the door and opened it. Jagger stood there, with his hands bracing the doorframe and his head hanging forward. When he lifted it, I noticed the normally disheveled brown hair was in even more disarray.Even his red T-shirt had stains on it. There was a laziness to his eyes and when he let go of the doorframe, he stumbled forward, into me.“Sorry. I’m sorry,” Jagger said as he clumsily worked himself out of our embrace. That’s when I smelled him.“Are you drunk?” I asked. He stood straight, but swayed. He brought his finger and thumb together in front of us to pinch the air. “A lot. I’m a whole lotta drunk.”Wonderful. Now I have to deal with a drunk man in my home.

Take one dose of a sexy physician, mix with an angsty pharmacist, and insert undeniable chemistry.
After one wild night in Vegas (and too much tequila), Everleigh finds herself in bed with a man she can’t stand and a ring on her finger. It doesn’t help that the man in question knows all the ways to push her buttons, even with his lickable abs and chiseled chest. The life she’s built, with her secrets locked up tight, is threatened when he decides he wants more than her in his bed - he wants her heart.

Brooks had wanted the hot pharmacist from the first moment he saw her. Except she shoots him down at every advance, so he hands it over to fate. But fate doesn’t anticipate someone from Everleigh’s past intent on keeping her for himself.

Author Bio

Renee Harless, her husband, and children live in Blue Ridge Mountains of Virginia.  She studied Communication, specifically Public Relations, at Radford University.
Growing up, Renee always found a way to pursue her creativity. It began by watching endless runs of White Christmas- yes even in the summer – and learning every word and dance from the movie. She could still sing Sister Sister if requested. In high school she joined the show choir and a community theatre group, The Troubadours. After marrying the man of her dreams and moving from her hometown she sought out a different artistic outlet – writing.
To say that Renee is a romance addict would be an understatement. When she isn’t chasing her toddler around the house, working her day job, or writing, she delves head first into a romance novel.

Every person has a story to tell. Some may be sweet with a happily ever after, but there are others that end in tragedy. Mine has yet to be finished. My name is Elizabeth Kingston and this is where my story begins. I never thought my life could be so perfect. I have an amazing job owning my own bakery, and a wonderful husband who I love and who loves me back. Never once did I have to worry about anything, at least, not until the texts started coming in. They always begin the same way … numbers that spell my nickname when read upside down. 31773It’s someone from my past, only they won’t to tell me who they are, but that by talking to them, I’ll figure it out. It’s a game I refuse to play. Unfortunately, I’m left with no choice when things begin to take a dangerous turn. His name is Anonymous and there’s only one thing he wants … ME.

Trailer

Excerpt

It’s closing time and Vikki and I are busy cleaning, so we can get home. My phone beeps with an incoming text and I look down at it and growl. “You can’t be serious.” Staring back at me isn’t a text from Jake, but from Anonymous. Even though I deleted and blocked the number ninety days ago, I still recognize it. Vikki moves closer, her eyes wide. “What’s going on?” I show her the text. Anonymous: 31773?Brows furrowed, she sits back. “What does that mean?” I turn my phone upside down, so she can see that the number spells out my name. Her eyes widen. “Wow, that’s cool you can type your name with numbers.” “But not so cool when I don’t know who the person is,” I counter. “About three months ago, I got texts from this exact same person. Whoever it is likes to play games. I’m sick of it and I want them to leave me alone.” Taking a deep breath, I type out a reply. Me: WHO IS THIS?Anonymous: Why all the yelling?I roll my eyes. This is just ridiculous. Me: I like using all caps. Anonymous: Don’t stop on my account. So, what have you been up to? Been a while since we talked.Me: Yeah, it’s because I blocked the number. Anonymous: Why?Me: BECAUSE I DON’T KNOW WHO YOU ARE!!!!!!!!“What is he saying?” Vikki asks. I show her the texts and her eyes widen. “So, you haven’t talked to him since you blocked the number?” I think back to when I blocked it and if my calculations are correct, the ninety days was up yesterday. “No, but he has perfect timing. My ninety days ran up yesterday. I might need to run to the cell store and see if they can block it permanently.” My phone beeps again and a sharp pain settles in my gut. I just want whoever it is to leave me alone. Anonymous: That hurts. You’ve always been friendly toward me. Me: Obviously not friendly enough, if you can’t tell me who you are. It’s weird and it makes me uncomfortable. You need to leave me the hell alone. Don’t text, call, or try to contact me in any way. I’m happily married, and I want it to stay that way. GOODBYE!Heart racing, I log into my cell phone account and before I can block the number, another text comes through. Anonymous: Sorry 31773 but that’s not going to happen. The blood in my veins runs cold. Hands shaking, I block his number and my phone drops onto the table. Vikki picks it up and reads the final text, her face growing pale. “I don’t think this person’s going away."

Faded by Julie Johnson

Title: FadedSeries: Faded Duet #1
Author: Julie JohnsonGenre: Contemporary RomanceRelease Date: April 4, 2018

Blurb
I was never supposed to be famous. I was a lyricist, not a singer. Certainly not a star. Too bad none of that seemed to matter to a rock-god like Ryder Woods. He didn’t just want my words — he wanted everything. And he took it. My songs. My voice. My goddamned soul. Between those haunting bedroom eyes and that heart-stopping grin, I never stood a chance. I was pulled into his orbit like a rogue meteor passing a sun. The problem is, if you get too close to a star…You’re bound to get burned.
FADED is the first installment of an angst-laced, passion-fueled duet about a jaded rock star and a starry-eyed songwriter. Due to sex, drugs, and rock & roll, it is recommended for readers ages 16 and up.
