Found Missing by Rebecca York

Found Missing by Rebecca York Series: Decorah SecurityGenre: Paranormal Romantic Suspense
Cover Designer: Earthly CharmsRelease Date: September 1, 2015

When Jenny Seaver escaped from her worst nightmare, she hoped she had found a refuge with Decorah Security agent Grant Bradley. But deep in her heart, she knew safety was only an illusion. Could she risk the night of passion they both wanted before she disappeared from his life?

Grant’s need for Jenny defied any danger.  But unless she decided to trust him with the secrets of her past, the evil that followed her could destroy them both.

Prologue
“Any progress on finding the little bitch?”The question came from a man with iron-gray hair and a scar that cut across his chin. Leaning back in his comfortable chair, he regarded Carlos Mardano through slitted eyes.Carlos knew that look. Often it was the prelude to dangerous anger that would flare like boiling lava spewing from a volcano. His boss’s dark, hooded eyes were one of the reasons he’d gotten the nickname Rambo. The other was his ruthless pursuit of any goal he set.Carlos stood a few yards from the man’s chair, staring over his shoulder at a weird-looking sketch on the wall. One of the other security guys had told him it was by a big-time artist named Picasso. It was supposed to be an original—and supposed to be expensive, but it looked like someone had taken a face apart and put it back together wrong.Trying not to think about failure, he pressed his hands to his sides to keep them from trembling. But this whole damn screwup was not his fault. It was a case of shoot the messenger. He’d been off the evening the girl had escaped. He wasn’t the one who had been stupid enough to leave car keys lying around. And he sure as hell wasn’t the one who had chased her at dangerous speed—then watched her vehicle skid off the road on a sharp turn and plow into a stone wall. Yeah, right. That guy was long dead.Carlos licked his lips. “We know she was taken to the hospital and admitted as Jane Doe—not Jenny Seaver—because she had no identification. And she was unconscious.”Rambo rocked forward in his chair and let his Gucci loafers slam down on the inlaid parquet floor. “Jesus Christ, you’re not telling me anything new. But people don’t simply vanish from the hospital.”“Someone checked her out. And whoever let her go tampered with the paperwork. There’s no record of her having even been there.”“Yeah, well, something weird is going on. I want to know who took her away, what they did with her, and why.”Despite the air conditioning in the room, Carlos felt sweat collect at the back of his neck and trickle down the inside of his shirt. “I did some snooping around the administrative offices. I think the hospital was glad to get rid of her because she had no insurance, as far as they knew. So who was going to pay the bills of some no-name chick in a coma?”Rambo pushed himself up straighter. “Probably somebody was paid to take her off their hands. I want you to find out who it was—and I want them brought here for interrogation.”The younger man shuddered, thinking about the holding cells in the basement below the high-class rooms on the house’s main floor. People went down the steps to the lower level and never came out again—at least under their own power. He wanted to ask, “What if she’s dead?” But he kept the question locked behind his lips. If she was dead, that might be the same as failing to find her.“Go on. Get busy.”Thankful to escape, Carlos turned on his heel. As he exited the wood-paneled office, he heard the boss muttering, “If that bitch has fucked up my plans, I’ll kill her.”Carlos hurried down the corridor and into the sunshine, where he stood on the back patio taking gulps of air. He didn’t much like the position he was in now. But at least he wasn’t Jenny Seaver. He remembered the girl as a complete wimp. Who would believe she had the balls to escape? And now she was missing, probably badly injured. It still amazed him that she’d managed to run away, but her unlikely escape only spoke of her desperation.Where the hell was she? And how long did he have to find her before the boss went batshit and turned his wrath on Carlos.

Excerpt
No pillow talk or sweet words were uttered. Lost in our own tiny space on the planet, we were too breathless to speak. Then, another surprise . . . in one swift and masterful movement I found myself gazing up at Jake’s loving face, which was framed by pine tree branches and glimmers of sunshine. He’d made it to the top without skipping a beat or the rocking rhythm, and so we continued. Oh, the sounds of love. The heavy breathing, the not breathing, the moaning, the groaning . . . the groaning? The groaning wasn’t us.
I tapped Jake on his back and whispered, “Jake, I hear something.”
“Me, too, my forest nymph babe, and I’m loving what I’m hearing.”
“Then you are not hearing what I’m hearing.”
“It’s probably just another deer or . . . wait, I heard it. That was neither a deer nor a squirrel.”
That was no longer a funny word, still interesting to Wendell, but not funny to us. The groaning, the creaking, was like something from a monster movie and it was getting louder and closer. We noticed that the dog was sitting, staring specifically in one direction. He didn’t look terribly anxious, but he was, without a doubt, alert and listening to the noise, too.
Our magical moment was gone. We’d find it again some other day, but for now, we needed to get back to the safety of the RV. A low-pitched squeaking noise that reminded me of fingernails on a chalkboard (really big fingernails) joined forces with the groaning for a few seconds. The combination sent chills up my spine. Wendell’s bravery waned and he whimpered. He had no frame of reference to make sense of all this. Well, neither did we. If Jake or I had been sitting on the ground, Wendell would have suddenly transformed into a lap dog. No laps were available so he merely leaned up against me. I gave his ears a rub and a tickle, just the way he liked it. We were all feeling tense.
“Jake!” I didn’t need to yell, he was only a couple of feet away hurrying into his clothing, but I couldn’t help it. I wanted to run. With his pants now on, he was ready to comfort me and the dog before taking on the woodland monster. We knew the general direction the sounds were coming from, but still we saw nothing.
Then came the snapping, the splintering, the crashing. We stood paralyzed . . . it took a few seconds for us to comprehend the source of those sounds. The ground beneath us trembled with each impact. Boom! Thud! Thump! Then, it was over. What followed was an eerie, profound silence.
A dead, medium-sized pine tree had fallen in the forest and taken two smaller trees along with it. We all ran over to get a closer look at the phenomenon.
“You heard all that, right?” Jake had regained his sense of humor.
“Yes,” I answered, now able to smile, too. “Three trees fell in the forest and I heard them all.”
“But you know, we’re lucky that I selected that spot over there for our nap.” He pointed in the direction of our bed of pine needles. “Or this could have ended badly. We could have been killed.”
“But it didn’t. We’re still here, alive and well. And I am very thankful for that.”
“Let’s go home. I need another nap.”

CHARMING by Victoria Danann

CHARMINGExiled #3
by Victoria Danann
Official genre of book Paranormal RomanceContent warning 18+

For six years the Exiled hybrids have lived in peace with humans, happily integrated and intermarrying, sharing education, technology, and culture. Despite his youth, Free’s youngest son, Charming, reluctantly stepped into the role of leader and proved formidable, commanding the respect of both hybrids and humans while uniting them in a single vision.

All was manageable until a string of human murders point to a hybrid killer. While Charming is in the middle of trying to keep the peace and maintain hard-won goodwill between species, Rosie shows up unexpectedly and leaves a young human female who is, apparently, on the run.

When Rosie disappears before Charming can find out how to get ahold of her, he finds himself with a city in crisis, the threat of a race war, and an unruly ward sporting lots of attitude. And a fetching body.

“So are you going to tell me why you’re here?” He looked at the large rolling bag parked by the front door. “Does it have anything to do with that?”

“Well, I do need a favor.”

“You’re moving in.”

“No. Not me.”

“Okay. What is it?” He sat down on a couch.

“Can I sit?”

He made a gesture indicating that she could sit where she wanted. She sat on a large upholstered chair near where he’d parked himself on one of his sofas.

“There’s a girl who needs to disappear from Loti Dimension. She needs a place to stay.”

Charming nodded, waiting for her to go on. Then her meaning dawned on him.

“You mean with me!?! You want to leave some strange girl with me the way Kellareal left you with my family?”

“Yes. Exactly. Including the part that you may find her strange.”

“No.”

“You can’t say no.”

“I sure as hell can say no. Let me reiterate. No!”

“You have room for a guest.”

“That’s my business.”

“I know. But it has to be you.”

“Why?”

“Because I trust you.” She could see that his adamant position weakened with that declaration. “And you have a spare room, what with being the grand poobah and all.”

She waved her hand in the air as if to indicate that he was overlord of the entire dimension.

“I know I’m going to be sorry I asked this, but what’s a grand poobah?”

“It’s the MAN, the big kahuna, the big giant head, yada yada.”

“Was that supposed to convey information or make you sound unhinged?”

“Look. I have a distressed damsel in tow. She needs a place to be so as to avoid death and dismemberment, not necessarily in that order. You have a place for her to hide out. So what’s the problem?”

“What did she do?”

“She’s taking the Fifth.”

He shook his head. “Rosie…”

“That means don’t ask, don’t tell. If she’s guilty of something, you don’t need to know. If she’s not, what difference does it make?”

“What diff…? You’re not taking ‘no’ for an answer, are you?” Rosie cheered in direct proportion to Charming’s posture of defeat and resignation.

“No.”

“Okay. New subject. Where have you been? Why did you disappear? Why is it that the first time you’ve spoken to me since my brother died is to ask for a favor?”

“When you put it that way it sounds rude and inconsiderate.”

“That’s because it is rude and inconsiderate. My family loved you, felt close to you. How could you just forget all about us?”

“I didn’t forget all about you.”

“Could have fooled me.”

“I’m sorry. I knew that facing you, and your family, would be painful. I guess I was thinking mostly about me.”

“But now you’re not.”

“What do you mean?”

“I mean, now you’re thinking about the needs of some stray human you picked up on the street in another world, right? Somebody you know nothing about. Am I right?”

“Yes. Right on all counts. She was terrified. You should have seen her. I didn’t care what she’d done. I just wanted to help her.”

“Well, that’s laudable. How have you been, by the way?”

“I got married. That’s the other reason why I haven’t been back. I didn’t know how you’d take it… my moving on. He’s the one I was taking a break from when I came here.”

“Oh.”

“I wandered around for five years. Then we got back together.”

“Oh.”

“Yeah.”

“So you’re happy?”

“Yes. How about you?”

“I’m… busy. I guess that’s the same thing as happy.”

“I don’t think busy is the same thing as happy, but if you’re not feeling unhappy, that’s good.”

“I missed you.”

“Missed you, too.” After a minute of silence, Rosie said, “So. Will you take her in?”

Charming sighed. “For how long?”

“Until you find another place for her to stay?”

His eyes widened. “You mean you’re leaving her with us permanently?”

“If she goes back, she’s dead. So, yeah.”

“Rosie, that’s not really a plan. Dumping somebody who doesn’t belong here. Do you really not see any problems with that?”

“None that you can’t solve. You’re Charming!” She grinned. “You made me feel welcome and right at home from the very beginning. That’s why I know you’re the perfect solution.”

“But that was you! It was easy to make you feel welcome because you’re you!”

“I think that’s a compliment. So thank you.”

He huffed. “I’m trying to say that, asking me to room with some strange human… Well, you know how I feel about you, but it’s a lot to ask.”

“Okay. Let’s negotiate. What’s it going to take?”

“What?”

“Everything in life is a deal, Charming. What do you need in return for this favor in order to feel like you weren’t taken advantage of?”

“I’m Jason Lewis.” I held out my hand for him to shake.
“Maxwell Craver.” His strong, calloused grip enveloped my hand. He put a little too much force in the shake, but I liked it rough. Just a little. Pain and pleasure mixed together was quite a sexual experience. The pain of being penetrated at first had been a lot for me, I wouldn’t deny that, but the gentle caress of a strong hand, the cupping of my balls as I felt my release… it was a sensation I had missed. It’d been a while since I’d had sex, and as I watched this man, his sex appeal, it brought back all those wonderful memories.
“Craver, huh? You own this place?” I motioned toward the Craver Automotive sign over the shop.
“Family shop. Dad still owns it,” he mumbled as he walked toward the office and I allowed myself the opportunity to admire the view. He moved the rag he’d used to clean his hands to his back pocket and it was a wonderful sight. A wonderful round, tight sight.
“Are you coming? We can talk about your car.” Maxwell held open the door to the office and I quickly caught up.
“Sorry,” I mumbled. I did this a lot. Admired men from afar. It was no secret I was gay. Just a lack of suitable men who piqued my interest. I didn’t do the flamboyant type. Not that it bothered me at all, I just liked a manly man. A man who liked to get dirty. I smiled to myself. Oh yes, a man who liked to get dirty, like the one standing in front of me. UNCHAINED MELODY by RE Hargrave

UNCHAINED MELODYby R.E. Hargrave
Genre: contemporary military romance
Marshall Chandler is a true American who grew up wanting nothing more than to serve his country to the best of his ability, by becoming a fighter pilot in the United States Air Force. On the eve of his first assignment, he meets the woman that will haunt his dreams and change his life.

A single night to connect, but a decade to realize it . . . when one man is torn between the love of his country and what might have been the love of his life, how does he stay sane? How does he cope? And will he ever get a second chance at love?

Sometimes fate works in mysterious ways.

6 years ago . . . Boston, MA (Outside of Hanscom Air Force Base)

Looking around at the swarm of bodies had me wondering how I’d gotten there. Between the loud music and the flashing strobe lights, my already blurry vision was getting blurrier. The smoking patio outside the club beckoned.

As I inhaled then exhaled, my head dropped against the wall behind me and I closed my eyes. The last two years had been intense. Nonstop missions fighting this ridiculous war in Iraq. I knew the American public had mixed feelings on the necessity of the resources which were being used at an alarming rate for The War on Terrorism. Especially the American men and women. Every time I managed to get a hold of the news, it included more deaths.

Part of me felt guilty that I was back in the States for a month when I should be over there with my fellow soldiers. The higher-ups had demanded I take the leave, however. They’d also made some pomp and circumstance about promoting me to Captain, which was bittersweet.

Ten years of service and I was achieving my goals. My call sign, Dallas, was now well-known thanks to the number of “kills” I’d logged. If I was given a target, I didn’t miss it . . . ever.

The impetus behind my heroic drive wasn’t so grand. Knowing that by giving myself over to the cause and allowing myself to become submersed in the mission, I didn’t have time to think about, remember, or ache at the absence of Melody in my life, didn’t discredit the fact that I was living in avoidance.

1. How long have you been narrating audiobooks? I started narrating audiobooks about four months ago. Prior to that, I did a lot of commercials, selling anything and everything.

2. What made you decide to do this? I went through a bitter divorce last year. The divorce brought an end to a poor marriage of almost twenty years. In addition, my employment as a professor at a conservative Christian university came to an end. I "made students think" and "introduced new ideas." In that context, those were bad things. In order to restart my life, I was looking to find additional revenue streams. I started auditioning for audiobooks. I landed a few books in the history and self-help genres. However, it quickly became clear that my voice seems best suited for romance-erotica. The rest is, I guess, history.

3. Is it hard to ‘get into character’? Not really. I try to identify the characters with someone I know. Most characters fit someone. Once the connection is made, the character develops organically. Admittedly, it is harder with female characters. I am trying to work on my range with female characters.

4. Are there any characters you’ve narrated that you identify with?Yes. I recently narrated a story for Lori Remenicky, Invisible. The character Jax had lost a great deal. I felt Jax's pain, hurt, and anger. The story played with my emotions in different, strange, wonderful, and scary ways. I was not expecting that. I actually ended up shedding a tear in the middle of the narration.

5. What are your favorite genres to narrate? I really like history books. However, there is a passion, wonder, and excitement in the romance and erotica genres. These two genres are growing on me.

6. Are sex scenes difficult for you? Yes and no. I was raised in a repressive sexual culture. Sex was bad and something to be feared. The baggage is still in my head. However, in this new season of life, I am opening up. I am learning so much from the books. Most importantly, I now realize that "normal" is a construct. We are a wondrous and complicated group of people with different passions, desires, and wants. I hope my voice can ignite and stir fires.

7. Is there any genre you don’t narrate? I try not to discriminate. However, I would not narrate something that was illegal. The only time I have been uncomfortable was when an author incorporated a scatological scene. That was awkward. Unfortunately, narrators do not see the entire script before committing to the contract.

8. How was it working with RE Hargrave? Fantastic. She is so great and active on social media. We became facebook friends and communicated back and forth. A healthy relationship between author and narrator is a must, in my opinion. I would definitely work with her again!

9. Do you have a career aside from narrating? Yes. I am an editor for academic books. I am also an academic author (monographs, encyclopedia entries, articles, etc.).

10. Any favorite authors you’ve worked with? I have loved everyone that I have met. RE Hargrave in wonderful. The good people at Decadent and Blushing Books have been so kind to me. Leslie McAdam has been so supportive. Deb Markanton, a reviewer of romance and erotica, has been a true gem. We communicate regularly. She offers invaluable advice and support. I am in her debt.

11. How important are strong male characters to you? I think strong male characters who have real emotions, fears, and aspirations are important. Some psychologists have recently described a phenomenon among American men under the age of thirty: Demise of Guys. I think many women, whether or not they know that term, resonate with the frustration and hurdles in trying to find a competent and strong male who is not a jackass. Romance allows an escape, I think. The man on the page or in the ear is the man whom many women want. In fact, I am currently narrating a book in which the author interacts, physically and emotionally, with one of the characters. Fascinating stuff!

12. Do you narrate both male and female voices? I do. However, my female voices are still developing. I often work with a female narrator, Ruby Rivers.

13. What do you do for fun? What are your hobbies and interests? I exercise often. I am obsessed with my WaterRower. I also enjoy playing games with my son. A relaxing evening with a glass of wine and my love is paradise.

14. Does your ‘significant other’ support your narrating career? Yes, she is very, very supportive. We often narrate together. She edits most of my work (and does a fabulous job!). I would be lost without her.

15. Do you have any advice or comments to those who are interested in pursuing a narrative career or for any authors who are considering audio books?Yes, I would advise both the author and the narrator to open their imaginations. The transition to audio is more than a transition of mediums. The book is, in a very real sense, new. The narrator and listener encounter the characters, tone, and scenes in a new way.

Domestic engineer. Author. Burgeoning editor. And quite possibly certifiable. Believing every story can shine bright with a bit of tenacious tough love, R.E. Hargrave is thorough and to the point. An international bestselling author, she takes storytelling and manuscript polishing seriously, working with her authors and on her own creations to ensure they come to life, crawling from the pages and into the reader’s souls.

Hargrave lives on the outskirts of Dallas, TX and is married to her high school sweetheart; together they are raising three children. A native 'mutt,' she has lived in New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Alabama, Texas, and California. She is fond of setting her stories—which range from the sweet to the paranormal, to the erotic and horrific—on location in South Carolina and Texas.

A broken engagement left Madeline Shawl feeling like a shattered woman.  When she meets Hunter Caligari, he seems to be the perfect man for some friends-with-benefits action.  But when the easy affair turns into something more, it threatens her comfortable grief. The passion of the younger man nearly infects her until Hunter tries to articulate it with the three words she refuses to hear. When she pushes him away, wounding his heart, she finds her own broken all over again.Still, Madeline struggles to leave the past behind and accept that when Hunter said, "I love you," he wasn't just speaking for himself.

Excerpt

“I had a great time,” Hunter murmured.Madeline wet her dry lips with her tongue. His head moved fractionally closer.“Me…” She had to clear her throat from the huskiness coming through. “Me too.”He smiled and their gazes met. Locked. She had this sense of free falling, just plunging head first into an unknown abyss. Had she ever felt like this with Kevin? With him everything had been easy. Simplistic. Nothing like what she was feeling now, with Hunter. He brought his hand up to cup her cheek, and she leaned into it, absorbing his heat. His eyelids narrowed a bit and his attention shifted to her mouth. All sorts of delicious tingles spread through her body because she knew he was going to kiss her. God! She wanted to kiss him back so much it was an ache deep in her gut. His head descended and her eyes fluttered shut just as the first touch of his mouth on hers brushed her lips. So gentle, like the dewy wisp of butterfly wings, and she wondered if he had kissed her at all.She opened her eyes. The desire pooling in his blue eyes brought a gasp to her lips. His head descended again and this time, he held nothing back. Wild. Erotic. He slid his tongue over hers, tangling, dancing, and sending delicious sensations vibrating over all her nerve endings. Hot and smooth, tasting of everything dark and velvety. She’d never experienced a kiss quite like it before. And she wanted more.

About the Author

I like writing about the very ordinary girl thrust into extraordinary circumstances, so my heroines will probably never be lawyers, doctors or corporate highrollers.  I try to write characters who aren't cookie cutters and push myself to write complicated situations that I have no idea how to resolve, forcing me to think outside the box.  I love writing characters who are real, complex and full of flaws, heroes and heroines who find redemption through love.I’ve been pretty fortunate in life to experience some amazing things.  I’ve lived in France, travelled throughout Europe, Australia and New Zealand.  I am a mom to an amazing little boy.  I’ve walked a red carpet event and visited the USS Voyager. I hate washing dishes but I love cooking. I hate washing clothes but I love wearing them. Writing my bio is difficult because I never know what to say so I hope you like this one.  My favorite color is red but I look best in black (it’s slimming).  I hate people who don't pick up their dog's crap in public places, people who don’t use turn signals, and I really hate people who are rude and condescending. I especially hate discrimination in all and every form.  And although I love holding a book in my hand, I absolutely adore my ereader, whom I’ve named Ruby.  I love to hear from readers so I’ve made it really easy to find me on the web.
