Dance or Die by Liza O'Connor

by Liza O'ConnorGenre: Contemporary Mafia Suspense (with touches of humor)

Tess Campbell, mafia princess, has fallen in love with a British prince during his stay in Iowa. He appears equally besotted, having given her his family ring that’s been passed down through the generations. Still, he asked that she keep his proposal and ring a secret for the time being.
Two weeks into their budding romance, Tess’s father, a psycho mafia don, kidnaps and nearly kills the prince and his Secret Service agent, believing she has taken both as her lovers. The brutal assault reveals the true character of each man and Tess must face some hard truths, even as she takes control of her destiny to build the finest state park in the country.

She arrived at the missing road at 5:48. Tess stared at the giant hole. It had been a message from her father. One she’d failed to understand at first.
He could and would literally tear her world apart if she didn’t dance to his tune. There was nothing her father wouldn’t do.
Nothing.
Her ability to see the ground dropped significantly as she entered the woods beside the missing road. Her heart rate increased as a horrible thought crossed her mind.
What if her father put bear traps in these woods? If he’d steal a road, what would a few bear traps cost him?
She slowed and focused on the leaves and the path before her.
Someone gripped her arm and she screamed.
“It’s me,” Cobbs said.
Relieved, yet still terrified, she hugged him.
He patted her back. “What’s happened?” he asked.
“Nothing.”
“Bullshit! You’ve been a rock up ‘til now. Something’s changed.”
She stepped back and met his eyes. “The only thing that’s changed is that I keep thinking about those four tortured men. If Father would do that to them just to make me be his obedient daughter, then Steel is in imminent and serious danger. I love him and the truth is, I’d do anything to save him.”
Cobbs pulled her back to his chest. “I hadn’t realized your feelings were so strong for the fellow. Hopefully, neither does Benito. But you’re doing the right thing. Leave now and don’t come back until the Campinelli family is no more.”
“Thank you for understanding,” she whispered and located the papers in her jacket. “These are the signed documents that Mr. Sedita requested.”
He looked them over. Once satisfied, he put them in his vest pocket. “I’ll take them over now. Should I call the men and tell them work is over?”
“Just for today.” Tears welled in her eyes. “I don’t think I’ll be going anywhere.”
Cobb’s brow furrowed. “But you said—”
“I’m going to try to convince Steel to take me away to England, but I think he loves his work more than me. I expect him to refuse to leave.”
“And you have a plan for that scenario.”
“Yes, I’ll get him fired and he’ll have no choice but to leave. But he certainly won’t invite me along in that case.”
She burst into tears.
Cobbs gripped her chin. “Stop that!” he ordered. “You are a magnificent woman, so much like your grandmother. Steel would be a fool not to treasure you more than rocks and dirt. Tell him you’re afraid for not just him, but yourself. And if he’s half the man he seems to be, he’ll go. Don’t jump to the worst case. I’d bet every dime I have, you two will be on a plane today.”
Cobbs’ certainty gave her hope and pushed away the tears. She nodded with renewed confidence.
“Thank you for all you’ve done for me. I couldn’t ask for a better friend.”
That made him smile. “Now get on with you. You’ve got a soul mate to save.”

A FORTUNE TO DIE FORBook 1

Megan Clarke had a good life until she wins the Mega Times Lottery and discovers the prize comes with a curse. Worse than the many money-hungry suitors, a serial killer has her in his sight. She changes her name and moves to Iowa with plans to buy their last major forest of white oaks and turn it into a State Park. Unfortunately, the Lottery Curse doesn't stop at state lines and someone there wants her dead, as well. Good thing a disturbingly handsome law officer is just as determined to keep her alive.

She stepped forward but stopped before getting close enough to see what was in the stack of photos. “Is it body parts?” One of her threat letters had said they’d send her body parts of dead lottery winners if she didn’t send them twenty million.
He smiled at her. “No. They are pictures of trees and creeks. There’s a letter as well.”
“Is it saying there are body parts in the woods?”
He set the pictures down. “Why don’t you read the non-threatening letter? And I’ll go retrieve the threatening letters and read those.”
“It’s going to take you forever.”
He tilted his head. “Hours. Is your offer of green tea still good?”
“Of course. Would you like some turkey chili with it? It’s healthy.”
He rose and smiled. “Green tea will do.”
After returning to the kitchen, she poured two green teas while he snared the box of hate. “Sorry I called you out for nothing.”
His brow furrowed, and he looked at the collection of angry correspondence in his arms. “This isn’t nothing. Is Sergeant Adams aware of how many death threats you’ve received?”
She grimaced. “He just told me to keep them. He never asked for a count. But he probably didn’t realize there was a whole box full. The last time he came, I only had a half dozen or so. I guess all those letters begging for money I don’t answer are pissing people off.”

UNEXPECTED LOVEBook 2

Alistair Castile, aka Steel, is a British prince, his archaeological career in ruins due to his promiscuous nature. He’s hired on as forest manager of Tess’s woods and quickly falls in love with the charming young woman, so different from the socialites of his world.
Only there are several serious barriers between them: Steel’s career cannot withstand another scandal and Tess’s father will kill anyone who gets in the way of his daughter marrying a Chicago mobster.

By the time Tess climbed in the car, she was perilously late. She drove the pot-holed road as fast as she dared, but she saw no chance of making up the time.
She arrived at the airport at 6:16 p.m. “Please let the plane be late,” she said to the ceiling of her car. She wondered if God would realize she was talking to him. Since she hadn’t spoken to God since her mother died, he probably had no clue who she was.
By the time she parked her car and made it inside, it was 6:28, and according to the board, the plane had arrived at 6:02.
“Shit!’ she yelled and held up her sign with Dr. Castile’s name. She waved it about as she hurried to the luggage carousels. She rechecked the board to determine which luggage loop she needed to haunt.
She’d made it two-thirds of the way around the carousel when someone gripped her arm and turned her around. An annoyed, blond Adonis with long hair pulled into a ponytail, wearing tight jeans and a tweed jacket, glared at her. “Gads, woman! I’ve been chasing you through the whole bloody airport!” His English accent reminded her of James Bond, but his attitude wasn’t nearly so polite.
“Shouldn’t you stand in one place and let your passenger come to you?” he demanded.
Dear God, this couldn’t be her new boss. Surely, Mr. Barkman wouldn’t send a hippie to Grams’ house. “Are you Doctor Alastair Castile?” Please say no.
He rubbed his temple. “Why else would I chase you all over the airport?” His gaze swept up and down, taking her in. “I must presume you are new to your occupation, and no one has taken the trouble to train you.”
Great, a misogynist. But he sure as hell didn’t look like a doctor. “May I see your passport please?”
“I beg your pardon?” His voice had a decided chill to it.
“To prove you really are Dr. Alastair Castile.”
“Surely, you jest.”
“You can either show me your passport or move on. You’re too young to have a doctorate, and you look more like a male model than a forest manager, so I’m thinking this is some stupid frat prank.”
Tess turned to leave, but he grabbed her arm again. When she turned, an obnoxious smirk formed on his lips as he shoved his passport under her nose.
Opening the passport, she read Dr. Alastair Bastion Castile.
God knows her, all right, and he’s clearly pissed as hell.

FAMILY ILLUSIONS by Bess George

Cover Desginer: The Killion GroupGenre: Romantic Suspense

Charlie Gomez always fantasized about a better life or at least a job that didn’t involve scrubbing other people’s toilets. The death of her mother reveals a past that’s based on lies and an unexpected inheritance gives her the opportunity to become a private investigator—the perfect chance to learn a skill for the future while she figures out the past. There’s only one negative in this new gig and that’s her antagonistic sexy new boss.
He has nothing left but a company on the brink of bankruptcy.
Jaxon Roberts was a street orphan who survived and thrived thanks to the kindness of a generous benefactor. But when his adopted father passes away, he’s left with the daunting task of saving McKenzie Investigations and a major surprise: his father left a biological heir, and she’s the key to his company’s survival.
As tension and rivalry give way to love, dark shadows of the past put their future—and their lives—in grave danger. When Charlie disappears, Jaxon is faced with a choice…walk away and preserve the world he knows, or fight for a future with the one woman who can truly teach him what family is all about.

He frowned. “What’s wrong?”
“This moved when I walked on it. I think something broke. Walking on this can’t be safe.” Charlie’s chest heaved.
“Calm down, nothing is broken. People call this a floating dock. Marina’s use them because they maintain a constant level, regardless of the tide changes.” Jaxon held his hand out to her, but she remained motionless and stared at him as if he’d grown two heads. This fear was so different from the bravado she’d shown earlier that it puzzled him. “What are you so afraid of?”
“I can’t swim,” she whispered.
“Are you kidding?”
“No, I’m not kidding,” Charlie snapped. “Where was a kid growing up in the slums of Los Angeles going to learn to paddle around in the water? Besides, I was too busy trying to earn enough money to pay the rent.”
He understood her snappiness came from fear. “Do you trust me? You’re not going to get wet.”
She stared into his eyes for a full minute before grasping his extended hand. They continued on until reaching the finger pier which ran down the length of his boat. Jaxon jumped onboard and turned to steady her across the small gap. Someone from behind knocked him to the side as they burst past.
Joey nimbly hopped to the dock and would have made a clean getaway except that Charlie stood in his path. His jumping on the pier caused it to bounce, and in her panic, she grabbed the only available thing. Too bad the young boy’s slight weight was no match for her larger, heavier body. Both of them fell backward into the dark water of an empty slip behind them.
Charlie came up coughing and sputtering out sea water but wouldn’t let go of the much smaller boy. Jaxon untied the two red and white life preservers on his boat and threw it to them. “Help her, she can’t swim,” he yelled.
Joey caught the first ring and made sure Charlie held on tight before nabbing the second one for himself. Jaxon used the ropes to pull them both closer. When she was near enough, he reached down to scoop her out of the water and sat her on the dock.
Hair plastered to her head, Charlie glared up at him. “Note to self: you can’t be trusted.”
She spit out more water and a smidgeon of guilt made him stifle the urge to laugh at her wet appearance. He’d asked her to trust him, and she’d ended up getting soaked. Now she was ticked off at him. Even with her penchant for accidents, how could he have foreseen something like this happening?

But when a tenacious food critic won't take a hint, can Sera lower her wings long enough to risk her heart one more time?

His face registered her presence just moments before she jumped into his arms, her hands tangling in his hair as she pressed her lips to his. “I was wondering where you were, angel.” She sighed. She knew he called her that because of her tattoo, but if only he knew how true “angel” really was. She kissed him again.
“Your lips are really warm,” he said. “Are you okay?” Although she had returned to her petite blonde human form, the residual heat she emitted as an angel remained a bit longer.
“Never better,” she said, and she pulled him down to her mouth again, kissing him with an intense desire she didn’t even know resided in her, the stress of the job she just completed out of her mind. She finally ripped her mouth from his just long enough to breathlessly ask, “Not that I’m complaining, but what are you doing home already?”
Instead of answering her, he picked her up, and she wrapped her legs around his waist. They were just barely long enough that she could hook her ankles behind his back. She kissed him one more time and unhooked her legs. He placed her down to the ground with such ease, she glanced over her shoulder to see if her wings were guiding her.

Athena sat on the edge of the bed, going through her purse. Icarus grimaced, but went to his bag and pulled out a shirt and pair of jeans that weren't too wrinkled. Athena was right—he did need some new clothes—but he was not going shopping with her looking over his shoulder. He grabbed his shaving kit and the clothes and headed for the bathroom. The shower was hot and worked surprisingly well. Once Icarus had finished washing, shaved, and dressed in his clean clothes, he felt much better. He came out of the bathroom to find Athena had opened his laptop and was typing away. Apparently, passwords were not a problem for ancient Goddesses of Wisdom."What are you doing?" he asked."I'm updating my Wikipedia page. Some of this information is incorrect," she replied absently.Icarus laughed. "Don't you think they might find it odd if you add material that the modern world doesn't know about you?"Athena pouted. "I have added it before, but they keep removing it since it doesn't have proper sources." She shrugged and closed the laptop cover. "Ready?""I guess so."Athena waved a hand, and he was back in front of the bookstore. No one on the street seemed to notice his sudden appearance.Icarus was abruptly nervous. He was not worried about the job; he was pretty sure he was more than qualified for making lattes and recommending books. Eve Gregory was the object of his concern. Petite little Eve with her golden eyes and black hair framing her oval face. Pretty, too-trusting-for-her-own-good Eve. Whatever scheme Athena had in mind also involved Eve, and that was worrisome. He straightened his shoulders, opened the door, and walked into the store.

Excerpt
Driving away we agreed that a chat with Ed Loughmann, a friend of ours who owned a number of pubs, clubs, and gyms, along with a security protection service for the local businesses, would be of value. My immediate thought was to look obviously at what had been said, therefore finding out something about Paul Tudor should be the first move. If anyone could find out anything about him, it would be Ed. Once we had some facts on the table, we’d then be able to look at the situation differently. Another immediate thought was the fact that Dean had been in Lamesford, a place that he was unfamiliar with. With him being a creature of habit, this threw up a major question, possibly even being the key to the entire affair; however, it was far too early for blind conjecture. Our destination was a pub owned by Ed—the Railway Tavern, the jewel in Ed’s crown. A grand old building in the area of the main rail depot, the Tavern stood out as out of place. Ed had refurbished every aspect of the establishment, from the interior and exterior decor through to the catering, which was among the finest around. After parking up we made our way in to see Ed sitting at his usual table, grinning as we approached. Ed was ex-British Special Forces, and in his early forties. He had short light-brown hair, and stood at around six feet, his features somewhat rugged, though they brightened considerably when he smiled. “Sabrina, you survived the weekend with this lunatic. Congratulations,” Ed said, raising himself, holding a seat out for Sabrina, and leaving me to fend for myself as always. Ed was an imposing figure, feared by the local criminals. He ran a security service for local businesses and select private residences. “No mishaps or misdemeanors we should hear about?” “Other than eyeing the waitress up, no,” Sabrina said, smiling at me. “I was only returning her admiring glances,” I defended. “Is it my fault I’m irresistible? Who’s for a drink?” Ed told me what he’d like, and I returned minutes later to see Ed with a serious expression. “Sabrina’s told me. Why don’t you leave this one alone?” He paused and looked around the room. “Did you hear that? That was the sound of me wasting my breath!” I grinned. “I don’t think there’s anything dangerous this time.” “Haszard, you say that every time, and every bloody time it gets worse,” Ed said bluntly. “What’s more, this happened in bloody Lamesford of all places!” “I don’t know Lamesford; what’s it like?’ I said, realizing that I’d regret asking. “It’s full of inbred bloody sheep-shaggers that still consider cows lying down as a weather forecast. They’re all as mad as March hares, worshipping and sacrificing God alone knows what!” “It can’t be that bad,” I said, suddenly thinking back to the name. Lamesford, I should point out is actually pronounced lambs-ford. I thought, there can’t be anything in that, surely. “I’ve heard a few things about it,” Sabrina said. “I’ve a cousin who lived there. She didn’t for long. She couldn’t get away fast enough.” I shook my head. “All we’re doing is finding out why he was seen in Southington at the moment of his death. If anything, we’ll be concentrating our efforts there.” Ed didn’t look convinced. “If laddo did the big splat in Lamesford, I’d say that Lamesford is where you’ll be looking, unless Old Nick had a hand in it, of course.” “Ed!” Sabrina snapped. “Dean was the brother of an old friend of mine!” Ed held his hands up. “I’m sorry. It’s just that I can’t see his death having anything to do with Southington, that’s all.” “I suppose you’re right,” I said, “but I’ll have to bear Southington in mind. It may hold the key as to why he was seen by another party, but why he was killed—well, that’ll be another matter. Maybe it is something to do with Southington, maybe it isn’t. You putting the feelers out on this Paul Tudor would come in handy, though.” Ed raised his eyes to the heavens. “How did I know that was coming? When do you want the info for?” “Tomorrow would be great,” I said. “No pressure, then,” Ed said with a wry smile. “On one condition.” “Go on.” “We’ve a twenty-twenty match next Friday. You’re captain.” For those not in the know, twenty-twenty is cricket. I smiled. “You just try stopping me.” “Good man.” I thought back to Grace’s call and the request for Phil to pick her up from Cardiff. “Ed, can you get Phil to call Grace? She wants him to pick her up from the airport and says to take his overnight bag. Apparently, there’s a party on.” Ed grimaced and sighed heavily. “If it’s anything like the last one, we may not see him for a few days, and I need my members of staff here.” “I’m sure it won’t be for long,” I said. Ed looked me in the eye. “Haz, that bloody mad woman creates chaos wherever she goes. Yes, Phil has a few days of leave, but I’d like him compos mentis when he gets back. Whoever has shares in rubber, I’d say they’re in for a decent payout. Anyway, now for some good news, your car should be ready in the next week or so. I had a sneak preview and it looks better than it ever did.” “Great,” I said excitedly. My car was badly damaged due to a fire a month or so back. I used to work part-time at the hospital and spend the rest of the time at my shop, but I’d been working in theatres full-time of late, having to use Sabrina’s cabriolet, or Grace’s V12 five hundred-horsepower rocket of a car, when I wasn’t cadging lifts here and there. “Ed, I could kiss you.” Ed shook his head. “Haz, I know how much you love that roadster, but there’s no need to come across as a bloody pansy.”

THE WINTERS SISTERS SERIES By Joanne Jaytanie

CHASING VICTORY1st edition: March 15, 20132nd edition: July 31, 2016

Victory Winters is on the run. A world-renowned geneticist, her mission involves conquering disease and improving quality of life. But a co-worker has been murdered, putting Victory and her mission in danger. Chasing her are all sorts of men who want to recruit and control her, manipulating her genetic secrets and research for their own corrupt purposes.
Naval officer Tristan Farraday is undercover investigating Biotec, a conglomerate that trumpets a better tomorrow in its bright, shiny annual reports. But Tristan’s bosses suspect that beneath Biotec’s carefully-managed exterior lies more than simple violations of a few experimental protocols.
Farraday is following a trail of murder, kidnapping, and blackmail. The trail leads him to Victory, who has been forced into Biotec’s world. Can Tristan chase down the truth and win the race for Victory?
✯✯✯✯✯ very entertaining!By Kelsey D. Verified PurchaseThis was a great beginning to what promises to be a very enjoyable series. Victory is a strong character and I loved how very intelligent and capable she is. She was put in a bad situation, but she decided to use it as a chance to help those who were being experimented on instead of laying down in misery over being basically kidnapped by murderers. There was also a wonderful romantic aspect with Tristan, who was also a great character. I’m glad that we will get to see more of Victory and the other Winters sisters in the follow ups.

Whenever Victory found herself in an enclosed space or in a crowd of people, she would often get the feeling of being watched. Over the years she realized, it was merely her ability to sense people’s emotions. Coupled with her sharper-than-average hearing and it could make anyone neurotic. Had she not taught herself years ago how to filter out the bombardment of noise and emotion which now encompassed her, she would have fallen to her knees from the deluge of sensations.
Victory felt a whisper of electricity run the length of her spine. She paused. She didn’t hear a specific conversation, and yet she could feel a conversation; this was new—what kind of sensation was this? Slowing her pace, she glanced around, and surveyed her surroundings. People seemed to be going about their business, grooming dogs or talking with friends or studying the competition. For one brief instant, she saw the back of a massively built man with jet-black hair; her attention had been drawn to him. In the blink of an eye, he disappeared out the door.
“Geez, now I’m really getting jumpy,” she muttered to herself.

✯✯✯✯✯ Excellent Romantic, Paranormal Suspense!!By Just My Opinion Verified PurchaseIn this second book of the Winters Sisters Series I couldn't read fast enough from wanting to know what was going to happen next! Like the first book, it is an edge of your seat suspense with an amazing mix of characters and an extremely intelligent and diabolical villain. These stories will grab your attention and won't let go until you are finished. If you enjoy action packed suspense, a little romance and a bit of the paranormal you are sure to love this series. Be aware that there are some explicit sexual encounters included in these books. I sincerely hope that there is a third book in the future!

The last thing the sisters needed was for him to spiral into a fit of rage in the middle of their important event, ruining the gala and giving Payton one more reason to despise him. Why did it matter what she thought? From what he could see, Payton Winters was just one more spoiled rich girl, totally focused on business and making a profit, and he was their newest asset.
Try as he might, Collin found it more and more difficult to stay in control while being immersed in people and their thoughts. Their emotions rolled off them and saturated his mind. At this rate, he would have to burrow himself into some deep dark hole or go insane.
He felt more and more agitated, as though his own skin suffocated him. The blackness of rage began to consume him, and he knew he would have to escape soon before he totally lost his grip on sanity and howled like a wolf.

✯✯✯✯✯ My FAVORITE book written by Joanne Jaytanie so farBy JusJulson Verified PurchaseMy FAVORITE by Joanne Jaytanie so far. I love all of her books, but Willows and Wyatt's story had me captivated. You know it's a good story when you yell, cry and laugh out loud at the characters. I can't wait to go deeper into the Winter Sisters lives!

“What do mean you read company email?”
“Sorry, I forgot how much happened when you were in England. I guess I figured Payton told you. Jack and your brilliant cyber department created a way for him and me to monitor company email. Strictly for security purposes, I assure you.”
“You’ve read every email I’ve sent to Payton and Victory?”
Now she lost every drop of color from her face. He should relish making her squirm; hell, she did it to him all the time. Only he felt terrible. What the hell is going on? he thought.
“They do have a way of making you chase your tail, don’t they bro?” Tristan popped into his head, his booming chuckle resonating though his mind.
“Beat it. I’ve got enough on my plate, trying to keep the peace with Willow. It’s like dancing through a field of land mines.” Wyatt shot back at his brother. Tristan laughed again and faded away.
“No, no. We can’t read your personal emails between the three of you. The way the program’s set up, the system flags employee names and certain words or phrases. Those emails come to our computers.”
“Thank the—” She stopped in mid-sentence.
“You were saying?” Now it was his turn to smirk at her, making her color rise again.

✯✯✯✯✯ Twists and TurnsBy Hawaiian Reader Verified PurchaseCorralling Kenzie is the fourth book in the Winters Sisters Series. This is a gripping romantic suspense featuring Kenzie and Logan. When Logan is assigned to protect Kenzie, he has no idea he will be attracted to her. Before meeting Logan, Kenzie thinks she has everything she wants--her ranch and horses--and is surprised when she starts to fall for him. The twists and turns of the plot are typical of Jaytanie's stories. She keeps the reader turning the page! This book can be read and enjoyed as a standalone book, but for maximum enjoyment read Books 1-3.

He heard a soft creak and whipped around, gun aimed dead ahead. He held his body rigid and listened. A pop rang out, followed by a knocking sound. He ran out of the room and down the hall. As he got close to the doorway of the last room he was hit with a blast of frigid air.
In one smooth, swift motion he entered the room, scanning it wall-to-wall. The window stood wide open, the shade bouncing off the window. He stepped to one side as he approached the open window. Logan saw the boot print in the snow on the exterior window sill. He inhaled and stepped squarely in front of the open window. No one was there and there were no boot prints on the roof of the first floor. He looked out over the blanket of fresh snow and saw no signs of boot prints anywhere. Then he saw something at the far edge of the illuminated ground. He jumped on to the roof and then down to the ground. He ran to find out what he’d seen. The intruder had landed on all fours on the snowy ground and disappeared into the night.
“What the hell?” he said as he walked in a circle, making sure he hadn’t missed any boot prints between there and the house.
