I’m just a girl who likes to daydream and sometimes I write them down to share. Growing up, the literary world was my safe haven. A wonderful place of fantasy beyond the bounds of reality. As an adult, I put that behind me to practice medicine. My husband and I owned our own practice, had two children and lived a somewhat normal life. Fate, had other plans. In the span of a year we sold our practice, bought a 96 acre farm in the hills of West Virginia and adopted 3 of our patients (ages 1,3,4). It has been an adventure of ups and downs and learning to laugh at ourselves. Yet, somewhere in the midst of kids, chickens, and toothpaste covered dogs, I began to write again. “According to Emily, he’s a total Adonis.” I stop pacing long enough to see him use the air quotes.“What’s so funny now?”
“You should hear what she calls you.” He bends over in a full belly-laugh, and now I’m really pissed.
“What?” I ask, rolling my eyes, taking his bait. “What does she call me?”
“Oh, no. Emily swore me to secrecy. But I will tell you it was given to you the day she took you and Kate to the airport.” His hand smacks the counter before he bends over in laughter again.
“You better fucking tell me, Kyle.”
“I gotta go. I promised Emily a phone call tonight.”
He starts to leave but stops at the door, turns to me and bursts out laughing again.
The day she took me to the airport? What could it be? I was a perfect gentleman. While I’m racking my brain, trying to figure out what it could be, I hear a ruckus from the backyard. Someone is shouting outside.
Spending a few minutes in the quiet garage, I head out toward the pool and see Kyle hanging out over his balcony. He’s wearing one of Nicole’s wigs, and I can’t help but laugh at how ridiculous he looks.
“Romeo, Romeo! wherefore art thou Romeo?”
What’s he doing quoting Shakespeare?
“What's in a name? That which we call a rose
By any other name would smell as sweet.”
“What the fuck are you doing, Kyle?”
“Oh, Romeo, Romeo,” he says again before he goes into the house—laughing, of course.
I shake my head at his antics, and then it hits me like a load of bricks.
“Romeo? She calls me Romeo?”
I run up the stairs with the sole purpose of clobbering my brother when I pass my giggling mother on the landing.
“This is going to be fun,” she says.
I stop in my tracks and turn toward her. “What did you just say, Mother?”
She shuts her bedroom door behind her, and I hear her laughter as well as Kyle’s. I barge into his room, where he’s literally rolling on the floor laughing his ass off.
“Mom, Romeo hit me!”

I leave the Humvee running and step out into the hot street. The intense sun beats down on the back of my neck. Even with sunglasses on it seems obnoxiously bright. Fucking Iraq. Miserably hot, and here we are in the middle of the damn day, out in the worst of it. My M-16A2 rifle feels like an old, familiar lover in my hands. The strangest sense of déjà vu washes over me. “Weird,” I mumble to myself, prying my eyes off of my rifle.I quickly scan the traffic circle, soaking in all of the details. There is no traffic coming through; there’s a Humvee at each intersection, blocking off everything. No way in, no way out. I glance up to Mike in the turret, manning the .50 caliber machine gun. I have known him for as long as I can remember. Mike was my next-door neighbor when we were kids. His mom used to babysit me while mine went to work, and she’d make us peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and then send us right back out to play. She always kept strawberry jam on hand because she knew it was my favorite. Hell, she was practically a second mother to me.He is my best friend. He is more than that— he is my brother.Mike’s back is to me as he watches the Iraqis, making sure none of them try to get into our perimeter. A horn honks and a driver gestures impatiently at the intersection. Mike quickly swivels his machine gun toward the car, silencing both the horn and the driver. I smile. We survived basic training together, then jump school in the stifling Fort Benning heat. We somehow got lucky enough to be stationed together. We almost always cross that bridge. That would leave us nowhere to go but right next to it,” I yell with a frown. “Doesn’t that seem weird?”“Yeah, it is weird,” Mike agrees with a shrug.I glance up at Mike for a moment, just a split second and then back to the car.“I’m telling you I have a really bad feeling—” The car explodes with a deafening roar, shattering the peaceful silence of the afternoon.The blast lifts me off of my feet and throws me backward into the Humvee. My head slams hard into the door behind me, my helmet bouncing off with a thud. The world spins for a moment and goes dark.
