I slipped out of bed and padded across the hall, stopping in the doorway. My chest tightened at the sight before me.
Richard, tall, broad, and bare chested, cradling his daughter close, and dancing with her. She was tucked high on his chest, with his cheek resting on her head. Her tiny hand was encased inside his, and he held her protectively. No doubt his humming was soothing to her, rumbling through his chest and lulling her into peace.
Tears filled my eyes watching them. The cold-hearted man I first knew was gone and replaced by this protector who would do anything to care for his child. To care for me.

DARK LORD OF THE NIGHT by S.K. Ryder

DARK LORD OF THE NIGHTDark Destinies, book 2
by S.K. RyderGenre: Paranormal Romance

The only thing standing between a new vampire and eternal darkness is the fragile mortal woman who claims his heart.

Youngling vampire Dominic Marchant struggles to master his deadly instincts as he hunts the urban jungles of South Florida. He keeps his hunger confined to the blood of the guilty with help from Cassidy Chandler, a human woman who can literally touch his soul. Their love is his last remaining tether to humanity, which is tested beyond endurance when powerful forces from his past introduce him to terrifying new appetites he could never have imagined.

His efforts to protect Cassidy from the depravity overtaking him push their relationship to the brink of shattering. Refusing to give up on the man who is her heart, she takes an unthinkable gamble to save him. But is she fulfilling an ominous prophecy that ensnares them both? Or has she become just another pawn in a cunning game played by the five-thousand-year-old vampire who claims Dominic as his own?

Desperate to rescue her from a fate worse than death, Dominic strikes a perilous bargain with his greatest enemies only to face an impossible choice--embrace his darkest self…or destroy the woman he cannot live without.

Eddie marched across the bed and head-butted Cassidy’s scrunched-up face. Then he gave Dominic’s nose a thorough sniff. Any other night he would have been elated at this sign of trust and acceptance from his little predator brother. All he felt now was an inexplicable anger. With the tips of his fangs showing, he snarled at the cat.

Saucer-eyed and flat-eared, Eddie bolted backward as though blown by a wind. He thumped off the foot of the bed with an uncharacteristic lack of grace and hustled out the door.

Cassidy sat up. “Okay, that’s it. What is going on with you? What the hell happened out there?”

Dominic studied the ceiling. “I’m not sure.”

“What do you mean you’re not sure? Did you kill anyone I know?”

“Non. Nobody you know.” Though that would have been so much simpler to explain.

A small fold creased the skin above her freckled nose. “But someone did die?”

He told her in French.

“I get the bastard part but not the rest,” she said, her words clipped with agitation. Her lack of comprehension of his first language was yet another sign that their minds were currently far from one.

“He died before I ever touched him,” he clarified. “Apparently I scared him to death.”

She stared at him. The corner of her mouth twitched before she gave a small cough that sounded suspiciously like a stifled giggle. “Oh. Really. I can’t imagine how that might have happened.”

He shot her a sour look.

“Your alter ego must have been terribly disappointed, poor baby.”

“Beside himself,” he muttered. He couldn’t meet her eyes anymore.

After a brief silence, she said, “But that’s not what you don’t want to show me, is it?” The disappointment in her tone scratched at his heart, but he remained still. “You know better than that. I know you do.” She cupped his face in one hand. “I’m here for you, my love. Always. No matter what. We’re a team.”

A well-spring of uncertainty opened within him. His whole body ached with his need for her. How could he exist without being part of her? How could he exist without her love?

How could he exist with her knowing what he had almost done?

He gathered her close. Emotion squeezed his words into a harsh whisper. “I made you a solemn promise that I will be by your side as long as you will have me. On my eternal life, this is an oath I will not betray.” And he would do nothing to motivate her not to have him. Nothing at all. “But I need time. Just a little time. To think about some things. On my own.”

“Vampire things?” she wondered against his chest.

He loosened his hold far enough to meet her eyes, making no effort to hide his hunger for her, nor his love, or his gratitude. “Oui.”

“Don’t I know all about those by now?”

“Perhaps too much,” he admitted. How she stayed sane knowing all she did about his hellish world mystified him.

Her eyes glistened, but her voice remained steady. “I see.” She inclined her head in a tiny surrender. “All right. Maybe I should think about some human things. For a change.”

He kissed her, tasting all the resignation and disappointment she felt—and feeling all the hope in her tender response. Always hope. “J’taime, mon amour,” he murmured, pressing his forehead against hers. “I am yours. No matter what, I am yours. Never forget that.”

DARK HEART OF THE SUN
His future is already written...in her blood.

Rookie journalist Cassidy Chandler wakes to an ugly bruise on her neck, a hole in her memory, and a fiancé who seems to know more about what happened than he's telling. It's enough to make Cassidy call off the engagement and move out, even if that means trading a posh South Florida mansion for a dilapidated beach house. Unfortunately, she also trades one devious man for another questionable character in her unexpected new roommate: the darkly enigmatic and exasperatingly French Dominic Marchant.

For Dominic Marchant secrecy is a matter of survival. As a newborn vampire with dangerous enemies, he's sure the headstrong young woman invading his lair with an unknown vampire's mark on her throat is about to get him killed. But the charming Cassidy resists his every effort to make her leave and even embroils him in her own tumultuous life. Before he knows it, she has stolen his heart and helps him rediscover his lost humanity. Now he's fighting to protect her not only from the ancient vampires hunting him, but also from his own deadly desire for her.

But her secretive ex isn't done with her yet, and neither is the dark prophecy Cassidy and Dominic's unlikely relationship has set in motion. Together they are swept up in a battle where nothing is as it seems, love and deception are the weapons of choice, and the only way to survive is to risk everything--for each other.

S.K. Ryder is a software developer by day, a scribe by night and answers to Susan any time. She writes the type of stories she loves to read: heart-pounding adventures full of supernatural mysteries and relationships between strong, compelling characters. Though she calls South Florida home, she has also lived in Germany and Canada and has traveled widely, usually in the hot pursuit of wild and scenic nature. When not debugging code, complicating her characters' lives or plotting her next rafting adventure down the Grand Canyon, she can be found beach combing, scuba diving, sailing or just hanging out with a good book. When push comes to shove, she can also bake a halfway decent cake and stand on her head, though not at the same time.

A tear escaped down her cheek. She dashed it away, and the anger replaced her sorrow. “I don’t want your money, Michael.”Hands fisted at his side, he finally met her stare. “What is it then?” She approached him and touched his arm.He flinched, but she refused to back away.“I want to know why? I need to know if you ever loved me. I demand to know if everything you told me was a lie.” There, she’d said it. She dropped her hand away.He was pale and thin. Little of his robust figure shone through the robe. “I never lied to you.”“Then why?”He turned away again. “I would have thought your parents explained that to you already.” She kicked at the rug, unsure of how to continue.“Didn’t your mother explain?” Anger rolled through his words like an army.In all the time they’d courted, she had never seen any signs of temper from Michael. He’d always been kind and loving. Through her fear, her own anger pushed her on. She stood toe-to- toe with a clearly dangerous man. “I was told that our engagement was dissolved because you cannot father a child. I will admit it took my mother quite a long time to get around to explaining that much, and I do not actually think she knew any more. What I want to know is what that has to do with you crying off?”Then he turned. “I did not cry off. You did.”  “I did no such thing.” She stomped her foot. “Then your father did.” His tone had gone flat.“He had no right. If you did not end our engagement, then why were we not married today?” She tried to sound sophisticated, but tears pushed to the surface. His attitude was so changed. She didn’t know him. Maybe she never had.“Your mother explained that.” He lumbered across the room and poured himself a rather large brandy. The smooth glide that she always admired was gone from his step.“So if we had married, then we found that I was barren, you would have tossed me over?” She was rather proud of how rational she sounded in spite of her sorrow and raging temper.“Don’t be ridiculous.” He swallowed half the glass brandy. His shoulders slumped. “Then why would you think that I would care?”“You don’t understand.” The second half went down in one swallow. “Clearly. Perhaps you can explain it to me.”

Ashley
“Simon, I understand that. But Ashley—”I look up from where I’m standing, behind the kitchen island, and focus my attention on Corie. That’s the second time Simon has cut her off in a span of three minutes, and it’s starting to piss me off. “I’m aware that time is money,” she says, her phone tucked between her ear and her shoulder as she sprays down the window I took her against a couple of hours ago.I’m not the least bit surprised that she’s busying herself with the task. She cleans when she’s anxious. I haven’t been able to get her to break the habit, even though I’ve got a cleaning crew that drops by a couple times a week to take care of stuff like that. She’s also really self-conscious about leaving behind evidence of our love making. Soiled sheets are one thing—the oil from her skin smeared across the living room window? I’m impressed it lasted this long.A smirk curls the side of my mouth as I watch her bend down, giving me a nice view of her pretty, round ass in those tight blue jeans before she straightens, shaking her shoulder-length, wavy brown locks out of her face. She tugs a few paper towels from the roll she’s got in her hand, pausing all movement as she listens to the man on the other side of her call.“Simon—three days. I’m asking you to push the interviewthree days. The article isn’t even set to print until—”He cuts her off again, and she huffs out a sigh, rubbing at the window vigorously. No longer capable of keeping my distance, I abandon our half-made sandwiches, rounding the island as I stomp into the next room. Corie’s wadding up the used paper towels in her hand as I approach, and she turns to look up at me when I stop just beside her. Our gazes lock, and my chest swells when her eyes soften. Then I hold out my hand, signaling that I’d like her to hand over her device. She scowls at me, simultaneously shaking her head.“Darlin’, let me talk to him,” I insist. She pulls in a deep breath and shakes her head again before she speaks. “You know that I wouldn’t be asking this if it wasn’t a request that came from Ashley, right? We’re both fully aware that the tour is less than six months away. I’m also not ignorant of the fact that publicity is important—but I’m just asking for—”When he cuts her off again, her face falling in frustration, I reach for her phone without permission, knowing good and well that she’s too small to best me. Quickly bringing the device to my ear, I mutter a greeting to my publicist of a year and a half.“Simon—is there a problem?”“Oh, hey, Ashley,” he greets in reply, his tone light and jovial.I furrow my brow, verbally expressing my confusion as I ask, “What are you doing, man?”“Just giving her a hard time, throwing off her scent.”I free a sigh, regretting ever having told him that I was even thinking about proposing. “That’s not necessary.”“Really? I thought for sure, when she asked me to move GQ, that meant this weekend was—”“Yeah, it is. Doesn’t mean you need to talk to her like that.”“Ah, come on. You know I’m just playing along.”In truth, Simon is not only great at what he does, he’s also a pretty good guy. He’s been a part of the music industry longer than I have, which means he’s been around for decades. At forty-three years old, he brings a good deal of experience to the table that a guy like me can benefit from.On the flip side, he has a bit of a reputation. He can be a real hard-ass. No doubt, it’s worked in my favor before; but seeing as how he’s talking to my woman, he needs to learn she’s not to be on the receiving end of his ire—whether he’s kidding or not. “Simon,” I clip, shifting my gaze out the window.“All right, all right. I’m backing down.”I nod, happy to have gotten my point across. “Can you move the meetin’?”“Yeah. I’m on it. No big deal.”“Right,” I scoff, shaking my head at him—regardless of the fact that he can’t see me doing it.“So this is it? You’re really going to go through with it?”I look back at Corie and find her staring at me, her eyes bouncing as she studies me anxiously. Thinking about spending the rest of my life with her brings a smile to my face I don’t even try to hide. She arches an eyebrow at me, as if silently asking me what Simon’s saying, but I ignore her. Instead, I reach up and slip my fingers around the side of her neck, then up to her nape, where I bury my fingers in her hair and gently pull her closer to me. She comes willingly, the roll of towels still tucked under her arm, and the wad of used ones held tightly in her fist.“Yup,” I tell Simon before pressing a soft kiss to Corie’s forehead. “If you’re sure, then I’m happy for you. Nobody deserves to get the girl more than you, Ashley.”“I’m sure. So, cool it, would you?”“Put her back on. I promise to be nice.”“Here she is.”When I pull the phone away from my ear and press it against hers, I then gently tilt her head to the side, so she’s got it tucked back between her ear and her shoulder. I let go of her neckwhen she starts speaking, but I don’t get the chance to back away from her before she’s gripping a fistful of my shirt.“Okay. Thank you. I’ll watch for your text,” she tells Simon. “Bye.”Finished with her call, she lets go of my shirt to take hold of her phone before she says, “Ashley, you can’t keep doing that.”“Doing what?” I ask, feigning innocence with a shrug.“You know what,” she murmurs, her lips turning down in a slight frown. “There are going to be times when some of the people you work with aren’t going to like what I have to say. Case in point,” she tells me, lifting her phone to emphasize what she’s saying. “You can’t keep rescuing me. I have to be able to handle these things on my own.”“Not sayin’ you’re wrong, Corie, but if I’m around when someone’s talkin’ to my woman the way he was just talkin’ to you, I’m gonna butt in. It’s about respect, sugar. He knows better.”I watch as she fights a smile, stepping closer to me before she says, “And I get that, but I had that handled.”“Sweetheart, now you listen here,” I pause, leaning down until my forehead is almost touching hers. “Somethings you don’tneed to handle—and seein’ as I’m your man and your boss, I think it’s fair to say that I’ve got the right to determine what I deem appropriate. You hear?”She purses her lips together, fighting another smile before she places a hand against my chest, pushing herself up on her tiptoesin order to touch her head to mine. “I love you, Ashley Hicks.”“I love you, too, darlin’.”I watch as she closes her eyes and draws in a deep breath before she settles back down on the soles of her feet and gives me a gentle shove. “Get out of here before I kiss you. I have one more call to make and then your schedule is clear.”“Al’right,” I reply with a chuckle, backing my way out of the room. “Lunch will be ready in a few.”“I won’t be long.”She turns away from me, headed for the sofa. On my return trip to the kitchen, I look over my shoulder and see that she’s replaced the paper towels in her hand with her tablet. Seeing her work fills me with a double ounce of pride. Selfishly, I’m glad that I was right—glad to see her doing so well in her position. She’s thriving, and it’s so damn gorgeous to witness. But I’m also just proud of her. She’s determined, smart, and ambitious. Not once has she tried to ride on my coattails, or use our relationship to justify a lack of effort on her part. She works hard, and I’m lucky to have her.Leaving her to do her thing, I think back on my short exchange with Simon. There’s not a single doubt in my mind that she’s the one, and nothing is going to stop me from dropping down to one knee tonight to make that truth crystal clear.

Tank by Laramie Briscoe

Title: TankSeries: Moonshine Task Force #2Author: Laramie BriscoeGenre: Contemporary RomanceRelease Date: June 2, 2017

Blurb
Life isn’t promised, love isn’t easy, and relationships aren’t always clean, but everyone has their soulmate who is willing to forgive when it would be better to forget.
Trevor “Tank” Trumbolt
I never thought in the blink of an eye my life could change, but it did. Cresting a hill driving to my favorite fishing spot, I was hit head-on by a teenager with no regard for anyone’s life but his own.

The recovery process has been hard, painful, and damn near beating me down.
The bright spot? Blaze.
Surviving the wreck has given me a second chance to make a life with her. Not knowing if I’ll ever be able to rejoin the Moonshine Task Force again has brought my world into focus. It’s made me realize what’s important.
Blaze. Stella. My brothers. My sister.
The ego that ran Blaze away before isn’t here any longer. What’s left is a man who’s holding his heart in his hands and a burning hope that once I’m healed she’ll still be around.
Daphne “Blaze” Coleman
There’s only been one person in the world who’s accepted me for who I am - from the fiery red of my hair and vibrant tattoos covering parts of my body to the smartness of my mouth and my desire to be matched in the bedroom.
That man is Trevor Trumbolt. When he asked me to give up my job as an EMT because he saw the dangers I face one scary afternoon, it spelled the end for us.
Now that he’s been injured, he needs my help and my love. I’ll give it all freely, but in the end I’m gonna need him to understand one thing about relationships. The give and take, love and sadness, pleasure and pain is a two-way street. He’s either in this with me or he’s not, but at the end of the day, I won’t let him boss me around.
If there’s anything that can handle the steel of a tank – it’s the heat of a blaze.

“Duke!” I turn when I hear Claudia squeal my special nickname. One look is all it takes. I no longer have to wonder what Rivers meant.Claudia’s thick, dark hair is longer. She’s always worn it in braids or slicked back into a ponytail through the hole in the back of her ball cap, but tonight it’s hanging in loose curls. Long, lush eyelashes surround aquamarine magnets—the same eyes I’ve seen no less than a million times, but I can’t stop staring at them. It’s as though I’m seeing them for the first time. The red top she’s wearing is sexy as fuck––one of those where it comes up and around the neck, leaving her shoulders and back completely exposed. Damn, damn, daaamn. Her perky tits and protruding nipples look like nothing less than perfection pressing against the thin fabric. It’s possible I’m drooling a little as my eyes scan her mile-long legs from her ankles all the way up to the curvy hips she’s showing off in tight skinny jeans. I swear to God those tits and curves weren’t there the last time I saw her. I would have noticed. Her shoes piss me off. Fuck-me pumps. She has no business wearing anything like those.Who is this hot, beautiful woman who has replaced Claudia Laine Bliss?I was six when she was born; I’ve known this girl all her life and most of mine. Since the time she could walk, she spent her days chasing Owen, Rivers, and me. Always slower. Always weaker. Always so soft, sweet, and delicate. She’d have chosen death over admitting a single one of those facts back in the day. But we didn’t care. She was Owen’s baby sister. Our little Claud. That was then and this is now. And our little Claud isn’t so little anymore. She rushes toward me and leaps into my arms, same as she has for years, with her legs wrapped around me. But this time feels different. My dick immediately recognizes the changes in her, too. The fucker spasms and comes to full attention when her body collides with mine. The exposed skin on her neck and shoulders calls out to me like a siren. A seductress. A fucking temptress. Touch me, Bram. Kiss me. Lick me. You know you want to.What. The. Fuck. No, no, no. Every thought going through my head about her right now is wrong. So many kinds of wrong. This is our little Claud. My best friend’s baby sister. Not some random chick I’ll bang and abandon before morning. Still wrapped around me, she holds my shoulders and leans away so we’re face to face. So close I could kiss her. “I’ve missed you so much. I’m very upset with you for staying away so long.”“You know I was taking extra classes so I could graduate early.”“I know…but you didn’t come back to see me. Not even once.” Her pouty bottom lip protrudes and it reminds me of the face she used to make as a child when she wanted her way. Except this time it’s hot as fuck. I want to suck that lip into my mouth. Maybe even bite it.“I didn’t do much of anything for the last five months except study. But it was worth every weekend I spent with my head in a book; I’m finished for good.”She slides down my body and her crotch rubs my cock—no, make that my hardening cock. I will it to stop but it’s a dick. It can’t notrespond to the touch of a woman. Especially when that woman is this hot.Shit, I hope she can’t tell that she made me hard.Even more so, I hope Owen and Rivers can’t tell that she made me hard. They would kill me.

Kate nodded, a faint colour rising in her cheeks. ‘I had a good dowry and Richard fair prospects.’ She looked up at him, holding his eyes with her clear gaze. ‘And we loved each other.’
Dear God, this bloody war, Jonathan thought.
‘And if it were not for the war, you would be living in wedded bliss in Barton Manor, surrounded by a brood of children,’ he said.
Kate looked away and he knew his observation had hit home. He reached for her hand and when she tried to pull away he tightened his grip, forcing her to look up at him.
‘I’m sorry, Kate, that was a thoughtless remark. I’m the last person who has any right to do that.’ He released her hand. ‘From what I knew of Richard, he did not have the heart of a soldier.’
He knew more about Richard Ashley than he was prepared to reveal. A scholar, not a soldier. Richard should be at home at Barton Manor with this woman and their children. Not dead in the ground at the age of twenty-two.
Kate looked up at him, her brow creased in puzzlement, and he cursed himself for revealing too much.
‘What could you possibly have known of him? The Thorntons have been estranged from the Ashleys for over thirty years.’ This time he bit his tongue and when he didn’t reply she continued.  ‘To answer your question, Richard may not have gone willingly to the war but he fought bravely against the terrible odds in the North. He followed Sir Thomas Fairfax into hell during those early years.’
Jonathan nodded. ‘Fairfax’s men had it hard in those early years.’ He paused. ‘Was he with Fairfax that day at Marston Moor?’
‘Of course,’ Kate replied. ‘Were you there? Is it possible you faced Richard?’
Of course Jonathan had been there with Prince Rupert’s cavalry. It had been a bloodbath.  Marston Moor had put in train a series of tragic events in his own life that had nothing to do with the battle.
He swallowed and gave a barely perceptible nod. ‘I was on the other flank with Rupert.’
‘What did it matter?’ A rare flash of anger rose in Kate. ‘You wouldn’t have known Richard if you had met on the battlefield.’
Yes I would, he thought.
‘That is the tragedy of a civil war, Kate.’
She didn’t seem to notice that he had used her given name. Her eyes blazed with anger and misery. ‘They brought him home to die. It was a horrible death.’ Her voice cracked.
She lowered her head and took several deep shuddering breaths that wracked her body.
Without thinking, Jonathan lifted his hand to her face, tilting her chin so she looked at him. Her eyes swam with unshed tears. Tears he had caused.
‘So many deaths. Too many, Kate. Believe me, it’s not always easy to be the survivor. I may not be dead but I have lost all that is important to me. It’s a hollow victory over death.’
So many deaths...Marston Moor and afterwards, Oxford. He had run at life, stumbled into the path of innocent people, and he had survived while they had died.
