About the Author

This is the segment where you learn a little more about who I am, so here’s what I can tell you:  I drink copious amounts of vitamin water placed precariously close to my laptop while writing. These are two healthy habits I have no intention of breaking. I’m a transplant living in the south, but I was born in the 70’s to a military dad who moved us around the world.

When I’m not writing (which is all the time), I’m hunting down Indie music, watching movies, reading, eating Tex-Mex, discovering new ways to humiliate myself bowling, and burning up my laptop battery on the Internet. I have a relaxed, easy-going personality and don’t like drama. I live with a cat who thinks she is a dog, or a goat (she eats plastic, so I’m not sure which).

Throughout my life, I’ve had insomnia. Counting sheep never worked and eventually I would imagine those sheep were the sole source of food after an apocalyptic battle where only thousands survived. I made up stories in a futile attempt to bore myself to sleep. The problem was, I got so wrapped up in my “head stories” that I would continue them through the following nights, changing it up each time to make it more exciting. Eventually, I started writing my ideas down – creating short stories, and then I discovered my love for poetry.

It’s almost embarrassing how many spiral notebooks and stacks of paper I have of poetry and lyrics.

Another passion: digital art. I design all my book covers, marketing, and series art. I’m a very visual person and pursued photography as an avid hobby for many years.

I am not a YA author (I feel like I have to state this only because I’ve had a few people ask), but I think it’s wonderful there are so many books available to teens in Urban Fantasy and Paranormal.

I am finally doing what I have always wanted to do: giving my characters a pulse through writing full time. I focus on adult urban fantasy romance, but I don’t like labels and I enjoy blending genres to break out of the confines of predictability.

But it’s what I love to do.

When Amberlyn Reilly loses her mother, her whole world comes crashing down. Having been caretaker to her for most of her teenage years, Amberlyn is inexperienced in many aspects of life. She hasn’t had time to live, have fun, or enjoy even the little things. It’s only when a letter from her mother, asking her to fulfill three things, sends her off to Ireland to live a life she never thought possible that she begins to heal.

Declan O’Callaghan was born and raised in Ireland and has his family’s legendary whiskey in his veins. With six months to get married, the reclusive Declan spots Amberlyn across a lake and instantly feels the need to know her. Soon, the two find themselves traveling down a path neither expected. Spotlight On: Love Bites, by Rachel K. Burke

Love Bites
by Rachel K. Burke
Release Date: 12/29/15
Harper Impulse
New Adult
225 pages

Summary from Goodreads:
What do you do when you fall in love with your best friend’s boyfriend? That is the question that twenty-six year-old Justine Sterling has been asking

herself ever since the day she met David Whitman, her best friend Renee’s

boyfriend. Justine is determined to ignore her growing feelings for the

irresistibly charming David, until one night, when she finds herself in the bed

of the one person she should stay away from.

When Justine and David’s affair ends in heartbreak, Justine is forced to repair

the damaged friendship with her best friend. In doing so, she learns that right

and wrong decisions aren’t always black and white, and sometimes you have to follow

your heart to see where it leads.

Excerpt

Somewhere around midnight, the Fireball bottle was empty, and David was sitting unusually close to me on the couch. It seemed as though the more we drank, the smaller the space between us became. He leaned over and passed me the final shot. Our knees were touching. My leg began to shake. I raised my glass to his in a final toast.

“To new friendships,” I declared.

“Friendships,” he repeated, smirking. Then he leaned over and whispered in my ear, “But what if I don’t want to be just friends?”

I could smell his cinnamon breath, just inches from my face. His breath was warm in my ear. My heart began to race, and I knew something was about to happen. Everything inside of me was gravitating toward him, like a magnet. I felt that tingly, happy drunk feeling buzzing all over my entire body, and all I wanted to do was lean over and kiss him.

David looked up at me, and even through hazy eyes, I could still see the intensity behind them. He reached out and took my hand in his. I felt warm all over.

“Justine,” he slurred. “I’m not just saying this because I’ve been drinking, but… I think I’m really falling for you.”

I couldn’t think of a reply. My head felt like it was in a cloud. I was floating, somewhere high up above us. It was the one thing I needed to hear, but the last thing I wanted to hear. Because, despite the fact that I felt the exact same way, he was still my best friend’s boyfriend.

Unfortunately, the logical part of my brain that was supposed to remind me of that was buried underneath vast quantities of whiskey.

I stared at him for a long time, but I couldn’t make my mouth move. What could I say? That I loved the way his eyes widened when he looked at me? That I loved his mischievous little smile? That he made me feel as if love really did exist? That he was on my mind every waking minute we weren’t together?

I couldn’t. Because deep in my heart, there was someone I loved more than him. And even if she was three thousand miles away, I could never do that to her.

Sneak Peek Sunday – Skin Deep – Grand Prize Winner, Launching a Star Contest

Sneak Peek Sunday Banner

Welcome to Sneak Peek Sunday, where authors share excerpts from their current publications or works in progress!

This week, I’m sharing an excerpt from my manuscript SKIN DEEP, the Grand Prize Winner of the Launching a Star Contest, hosted by the Spacecoast Romance Authors chapter of the Romance Writers of America. Check it out, then HOP to the rest of the posts this week to discover amazing authors and great reads!

Excerpt

Emma’s doctor stood framed in the doorway, a half-smile arrested on his face, his light brown eyes wide as he stared at me in shock.

The smell of him filled the room—almost spicy, and utterly terrifying. I froze, but the muscles under my skin rippled. Sucking in air, I flicked my tongue out across my lips. His scent flowed through my mouth. He tasted like heat, but not like prey.

Threat.

He smelled like danger, and I was about to shift.

Oh, hell.

The room swung into shades of gray and I blinked quickly to keep him from seeing the slitted pupils of my partially shifted eyes.

I closed my mouth and breathed deeply through my nose, focusing on my mammal senses, the human part of me. I glanced down at the floor and waited for the colors to come flooding back. Once I was in control of my senses, I looked back up at him.

With a shudder that trembled through his entire body, he shook himself out of his immobility.

The whole thing couldn’t have lasted for more than a few seconds, but I was drenched in sweat.

Prologue

“Their fear is your weapon.” The old man’s words ring loud and true within the walls of the banquet room. They display eloquently against the pale face of his latest target—or rather, his latest conquest. The rebellious nature of the fugitive landowner before him crumbled to an embarrassing spectacle of soiled trousers and desperate pleas.
“I’ll pay double,” he says through hasty breaths.
The old man smiles. “Your debt is no longer a concern.” He gestures to the two armored men who hold the landowner captive. “Guards, please introduce him to Eva.” The landowner throws nervous glances at the guards as they usher him across the room. Like all the others before him, it takes him a moment to realize who Eva is. I watch him stiffen, throwing his legs out in front of him to stall the guards, his heels dragging uselessly against the polished wood. He gives in to a series of screams as they reach the human shaped cabinet. It stands open, the long, sharp internal spikes ready to impale its next victim.
“Life is a cradle of victories and failures, my son,” the old man says over the man’s screams, raising his cup to me. “The more victorious you are—”
“The longer I shall live,” I finish flatly. “I can recite your teachings in my sleep, old man. When will I get to do anything with them?”
He takes his time to answer, enjoying the last of the landowner’s melody as Eva’s iron door grinds to a close. He welcomes the ensuing silence with a sigh. “You are young still, boy. But if you are ever to do my bidding, you must work on your patience; revenge is not to be rushed.”
I snort. “What is it now, thirty years? I’d wager you are in no danger of rushing anything.” The old man stares back through zealous eyes.
“Patience, son. The best poison is that which spreads through unsuspecting veins, killing slowly and gradually. The kind that tastes sweet to the tongue and doesn’t bitter until the very end.”

Book Boyfriend Cafe: Hot and Bothered ~ Sanguinary

BBC+blog+logo+final+white

It’s Hot for Friday with Book Boyfriends Café!

On Fridays the Book Boyfriends Café posts a fun little task for everyone to complete or question to answer. Last week’s swoon worthy lines left some breathless, and others craving more. This week our characters find themselves entangled in a web of tension, sexual tension that is. This week, authors share a scene that will leave us Hot and Bothered!

So check out the scene below from Sanguinary, then HOP on over to the Book Boyfriends Café to check out all the other writers’ scenes!

From Sanguinary:

I tugged at Reese’s jacket, pushing it off his shoulders and down his arms. His kiss deepened and I moaned in the back of my throat. I managed to undo his bow tie with one tug, and then we were both lying on the couch, my legs wrapped around him, his tongue deep in my mouth. I played with his fangs with my tongue, testing their sharpness. He bit down, ever so slightly, and his fang slid inside my tongue. My breath caught in my chest, but the sharp pinpoint of pain faded as a small amount of blood welled to the surface. Reese melted against me and whimpered as I ran my tongue against his, mingling the taste of him with the taste of blood.

He traced a trail of kisses down my neck and into the cleavage line of my jacket, then licked one long line back up to the puncture marks on my shoulder. I pushed my head back against the couch and drew in a shaky breath. With one hand, he unbuttoned my shirt and slid it gently off, pushing my bra out of the way as he moved down to kiss my breasts. My nipples grew taut under his tongue, and I whimpered with pleasure.

I fumbled with his shirt and pants, finally pushing them to the floor. He moved his mouth down to my stomach, smiling against it as I used my feet to finish pulling his clothes off of him.

He gently slid one fang through the top of my bellybutton as if piercing it for a ring. I nearly screamed aloud with the combined pain and pleasure, barely managing to capture the sound in my throat. Moving back up across my body, Reese covered my lips with his own, and I whimpered into his mouth.

Excerpt

Our eyes locked. Like magnets, our bodies leaned in. Even though I had felt a connection

with Trent back in Houston, my mind always took me back to Farrell. But I kept

resisting him because he represented a part of me I didn’t know, a part of me

that didn’t exist anymore.
My body trembled. Even though I wanted to be with him, I wasn’t sure if I could trust

my emotions. “Farrell, I don’t know if the feelings I have for you are really

mine. Or if they’re glimpses of another version of me.”
He traced the side of my face with his warm fingertips. “It’s you, Dominique. Here. Now.

And nobody else. I promise.”
Desire coursed through my veins, and I knew, without a doubt, he was right. I wanted

him. I needed him. In this life. Right now. And I was tired of fighting it.

“Farrell,” I whispered.
He brought his face within inches of mine and stared deep into my eyes before brushing his

warm, soft lips against my mouth. Tingles erupted all over my skin. Warmth

spread throughout my cold body. He wrapped his strong arms around me and

brought me closer. Our kiss was slow and deep. His breath and taste drew me in,

and I wished I could melt into him.
He moved his mouth down to my neck, sprinkling kisses all over me. “I’ve waited so long

for this,” he whispered.
I ran my fingers through his thick hair and moaned. “Oh, Farrell.”
Footsteps crunched in the distance, killing the moment. We separated fast, pretending

like nothing had happened even though everything had happened.
I was his, and he was mine.
