Clouded

By M.S. Kaye

A Sumerian water and sky god myth collides with a modern high school.

Ayanna is a math nerd, logical and rational, even cold, but Calder makes her feel things she never had before. Somehow, she’s able to accept it when she discovers he’s a reincarnated Sumerian water god. Will she be able to accept the full truth, that the story of Enki and Inanna has been reborn in a modern Ohio high school?

Excerpt:

Calder’s voice was quiet but threatening. “Can you not see she’s uncomfortable?”

Mark opened his mouth, as if about to argue.

Calder added in a growl, “Back the fuck off.”

The silence was cold.

Then a clang bellowed from the kitchen. Several of the girls gasped and jumped.

Calder shoved him the last couple inches into the wall, then walked out.

Everyone stared after him. They let him go, didn’t try to egg on a fight. I had the impression they knew better, like they were scared to anger Calder any more than he already was.

The atmosphere lightened slowly. Several voices recommenced.

“I don’t know. It must’ve boiled over,” one of the cafeteria workers said.

“Someone’s PMSing,” Mark snickered. He looked shaken, embarrassed.

“Wow,” one of the girls said.

“Yeah, Cal’s always been sweet like that. You should’ve seen when we were in the first grade and someone was picking on me. It was so sweet…” She went on and on. I had to ignore her.

The line dragged, and when I could finally see into the kitchen, I saw why. The huge pot looked like it’d spewed scalding water, and several of the women who’d been serving were attempting to dry surfaces all over the kitchen. How in the world had it boiled over like that? It looked more like it’d exploded. The water was everywhere, not just the stove and the floor, but the ceiling, the prep table, and even all the way to the serving line. What in the world is it with this town and water? The school sprinklers went off for no reason on my first day, the snow and rain behaved oddly, and now this.

Author Spotlight: Kim Kash, Author of Ocean City Lowdown and Ocean City Cover-Up

Author Spotlight on

Kim Kash

Kim Kash is the author of two novels in the Jamie August series: Ocean City Cover-up (2015) and Ocean City Lowdown (2013). She also wrote the bestselling Ocean City: A Guide to Maryland’s Seaside Resort (2009), and is currently working on the next installment in the Jamie August series. Kim divides her time between Maryland and the Middle East, which can be weird.

What inspired you to write your first book?

As a freelance writer back in 2008, I wrote a travel guide to Ocean City, Maryland for the Tourist Town series (Ocean City: A Guide to Maryland’s Seaside Resort). While I was researching that book, I wanted to read some good mysteries set in the region—and I found that there aren’t very many. Ocean City is a gold mine of funny characters and kitschy, fun scenery, and it holds plenty of memories from my own life. I was surprised that the OC-inspired fiction choices were so thin, so I decided to chime in with my own series.

Have you ever disliked something you wrote?

I dislike everything I write, the first time around! I have done a lot of work as a professional editor, and it’s very difficult for me to just shut up and write, you know? My first drafts are always a mess, and I hate them. But I’m finally getting into the rhythm of it and learning to get out of my own way and just get the draft done. Then I edit, edit, and edit again. In terms of disliking any finished pieces? I’m pretty happy with my creative writing. I try not to get my ego too caught up in any of it, though. I write campy genre fiction, with glee! I love it that readers enjoy my stuff, but when I get a cranky Amazon review, it doesn’t cause much existential angst.

How has your writing career changed in the past year?

My writing career just changed in the last month, because I have taken a full-time job. I’m coordinating logistics for the expatriate school in my community, which definitely scratches my organizational itch. I’m really happy about this change. And yet…. I haven’t had to report to work wearing real clothes and makeup in almost ten years. No more days of working in my pajamas on the couch with only my cat Eddie for company. I am still adjusting to the time crunch, trying to figure out put in a full day’s work and still eat healthy, exercise and get enough sleep–plus finish the third novel. Good Lord! Other people do this, I keep telling myself. And it is getting better: I’m getting more efficient, and I have every intention of finishing the next book in my series.

What are you reading now or what do you have in your TBR pile?

Next up is Bad Citizen Corporation, the debut crime novel of fellow UCSB grad S.W. Lauden. It came out last month with some wildly enthusiastic reviews, so I’m pretty excited to read it—and not just because we cut our teeth at the same college newspaper. Lauden is a big supporter of indie fiction, interviewing fellow authors and organizing readings and events in Southern California. We need somebody like Lauden on the East Coast—or maybe we have one, but I haven’t been invited to the party yet. Living in Saudi Arabia but writing about Ocean City, Maryland does leave me rather disconnected with what’s going on with my community of authors.

What are you working on now?

I’m well into Ocean City Getaway, the third in the Jamie August series. In this installment, Jamie faces such daunting challenges as infiltrating a ring of con artists working the eastern seaboard; fighting against her vegetarian boyfriend’s campaign to make her stop eating crabcakes (this may involve a breakup); and smiling through her best friend’s beach wedding while wearing an off-the-shoulder lavender bridesmaid’s dress.

Ocean City Lowdown: A Jamie August Novel (Book 1)

Ocean City Lowdown introduces Eastern Shore Maryland reporter Jamie August, who has a talent for unearthing more than her editor wants and a weakness for Ravens jerseys and sparkly underwear. She is assigned to cover the grand opening of a big new housing development in Ocean City, Maryland. But instead of writing about wrap-around porches and rattan furnishings, she uncovers kickbacks and payoffs, blackmail and murder. Jamie’s tenacity, smarts, and sheer recklessness—plus some smokin’ striptease dance moves—can get her out of some tight spots, but are they enough to save her from a psychopathic arsonist and two generations of corrupt real estate tycoons?

Ocean City Cover-up: A Jamie August Novel (Book 2)

Euro-trash collides with American gangsta in Maryland’s gleefully cheesy beach resort. Reporter Jamie August befriends a spoiled heiress who is being pursued by Russian mobsters—and a chart-topping rap star. Meanwhile, a raging crime spree is keeping Jamie busy—and so is a hot new boyfriend and a strict jogging and frozen custard fitness plan. Action careens from OC to Dubai, from the wild shores of Assateague to a wild-west campground. Will Jamie survive to debut her fringed leopard-print bikini?

Interview with Michael Weekly, Author of Mystical: The Deadly Truth

What inspired the premise for your story?

I enjoy fairies, witches, elves, mermaids, any other magical creature. However, in most cases, one magical creature is looked down upon sometimes. This is the witch. They’re made to be these long nosed, ugly pimpled women who boil up deadly potions in their cauldrons. You get the point, they’re not as beautiful and pretty as the other creatures. So, I flipped it. I have a witch who is born and trained to kill mermaids, fairies, elves and any other creature. I thought it would be cool to flip the switch and have a witch be the hero of the story instead.

Why is the setting to your story so important?

I wanted my story to be in the city, because it’s different and cool to me. To have mystical creatures disguised as humans going to college or at parties is pretty rad.

Did you always want to be a writer? If not what did you want to be?

Initially I wanted to work in Public Relations and to be a Publicist under entertainment, print and media. If writing happens to become anything bigger I’ll be more than happy to come up with more stories to tell!

When did you first consider yourself a “writer”?

Joining Wattpad, a reading/writing, site made it very clear that I could do this writing thing pretty well. I had little fans waiting for my stories to update because they were so interested in finishing it. When you have people who invest that amount of time in your work, your books it means something. I officially labeled myself as an author after two years on Wattpad.

How long did it take to get your first book published?

I did not plan on publishing Mystical at all. I had a clear plan to just keep it on Wattpad. An agent reached out to me on the site and asked me to send her my manuscript and then I decided to start pitching to agents. Of course you’re going to get rejected, but it made me change my mind and so it took me about 5 months after I was completely done with my sequel in the series. I landed a traditional publishing deal.

What were your aspirations as an author and have any of them come true?

Well, one of them was getting published and that came true! Another was working with a professional editor and that’s come true as well. I’m a pretty happy camper!

What have you learned about the publishing industry since you’ve signed that first contract?

That an author has no say in what they want done with the book. The editing is pretty much your only say, the cover and everything else marketing wise that’s completely up to your publisher!

Now that you have a feel for the publishing world, would you do anything different if you had to do it all over again?

I would do a bit more research with who I’d like to do business with. I would be much more detailed with what I want for my book and maybe think once or twice about being agented or just being traditionally published.

What genres do you normally write in?

I absolutely love Fantasy, Urban Fantasy and Dystopian. It’s when I feel most limitless.

Is there a genre you haven’t written in that one day you’d like to tackle?

Romance

What was the craziest thing you’ve ever done when it came to a storyline in your book?

Cut a complete chapter out and rewrite it! It was scary, it was brutal, and it will never happen again!

Diverging Cadence (Cadence #2)
by Katie Hamstead
Release Date: August 25th 2015
REUTS Publications

Summary from Goodreads:

When Cadence Anderson woke to find her husband and infant daughter had been killed, she thought her life was over. Instead, she was offered a second chance and sent back in time to do it all again.
She’s made the most of this opportunity, repairing her relationship with the best friend she lost the first time, avoiding the romantic mistakes she made originally, and even bringing her family closer together. But she’s also done something she wasn’t planning on—she’s fallen in love with someone other than her future husband.
Stepping onto a plane and flying across country to attend university is the hardest decision she’s had to make. But unless she follows through with it, her future with Austin might never happen. And what becomes of her beautiful baby if she stays with James, the man she was never supposed to love?
The only thing she knows for certain is that she has to see Austin again, and she’s intent on reliving that part of her previous life exactly like she did the first time. Even if that means she has to lie to James to do it. Because, deep down, she can’t quite bring herself to let him go.
Now, past and future are about to collide, and Cadence has to make her final choice—follow the uncertain path of a life with James, or the one she came back to save . . . with Austin.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR:

AUTHOR. CHICKEN (AND DOG) LOVER. MOTHER. WIFE. DREAMER.

I’m happily married to the love of my life (don’t gag) and raising three beautiful children in the gorgeous state of Virginia. We live just outside Washington, D.C., and every day I wake up to find myself stuck in traffic trying to get there.

The horrid commute gives me plenty of time to zone out and think about my characters in full, brilliant details (I’m a safe driver; don’t worry). Stories give me a way to forget about the sometimes smelly strangers sitting next to me on the fifty mile trek into town (I pick up hitchhikers every day. True story. Check out http://www.slug-lines.com if you don’t believe me).

I’ve been a part of organized hitchhiking for nearly fifteen years, but that’s just one small aspect of my oh-so-large life. When I’m not working, commuting, or chasing after my three children (four if you count the man), you can usually find me outside talking to my chickens like they’re the cutest things in the world (they are), or training my amazing dogs how to herd said chickens (which they love), or curled up on the sofa with a good book (why can’t that be 100% of the time?).

I hope you love my stories (or just like them a little; that would be okay, too). And I hope that one day you find your passion, because there’s nothing in life better than doing what you love while surrounded by people you love.

Krystal

It was still drizzling when I stepped out onto the street, but no one seemed to notice.  Phenex, the gargoyle, and Thomas were leaned against the building, talking.

I came alongside the gargoyle and touched her arm. “Jeanie—may I call you Jeanie?  You mind sticking around? We could really use your help.”

She hesitated only a moment before nodding. “Sure. I’ll do what I can.”

A wave of anger from Thomas hit me, surprising me like a sucker punch. He leaned against the building, wiping the rain off of his glasses and met my gaze with his hardened one.  This was his first job, and he was stuck with me and the vampire who’d killed his uncle.  He kicked off the wall and slid his glasses back on.

“You need to choose him or me, because you will not put my life on the line like you did George.” He wasn’t fearful. I had to give him that.

Excerpt from Embrace the Dark by Caris Roane

Mastyr Vampire Gerrod, of Merhaine Realm, lifted a hand toward the human, Abigail, then let it fall away. She stood with her back to him, ignoring him, delighting in the wedding festivities, laughing often.

Sweet Goddess, even her laughter spiked his blood-need, which caused other needs to rise as well. His desire for her was never far away and deepened now, echoing through each cell of his vampire body, stiffening muscles and other parts, begging for sustenance, all kinds.

He should have been beyond such madness. He was three hundred years old, for the Goddess’s sake. But ever since Abigail Kirkland had made her presence known and felt in Merhaine, he’d been held hostage by even the scent of her.

Like crushed rosemary.

He breathed in, his nostrils flaring. A full sliver of heaven in that delicate scent, with just enough woman beneath to rob him of rational thought.

And she a human.

He flexed his biceps, he was that mad. He had to work not to let his fangs descend, else everything he felt would be on display for even the lesser folk to know and understand. He wouldn’t let her humiliate him.

This madness was maddening.

He stood behind her, and a little off to her right side. He could almost see her profile. She knew he was there, but she was ignoring him. She had told him that his temper irked her and she wished he would be silent.

He could have her killed for saying such a thing to him, he, the Mastyr Vampire of the Merhaine Realm, one of the Nine Realms of North America. Did she not understand that he ruled this realm?

He should walk away. There were many at the wedding reception expecting his attention, several mayors, council members.

Yet he couldn’t do so since apparently his leather boots had rooted to the earth. What power was this she held over him? He had never understood, not in the entire year he’d known her.

As the best man spoke into the mic and delivered a slightly slurred toast to the groom, Gerrod’s gaze roved Abigail, his hunger increasing. Her bare shoulders tempted him, called to him, begged for his lips, his fingers, the full length of his tongue. His nostrils flared a little more. Her gown, a soft cream, revealed a portion of her fair back, a large window of skin that set his jaw to trembling. Her long red hair was curled and pulled forward to dangle over her shoulder in beautiful layers over one breast. She had extraordinary eyes, a beautiful light green. He couldn’t remember the last time he’d been so taken with a woman.

May the heavens help him, Abigail had teased his mating frequency into a frenzy and he was overwrought. Yet he could do nothing about it. The damn woman was human. He would no more give himself to such a ridiculous creature than he would bring forest gremlins into his bed.

He’d be damned first.
