“Some things just couldn't be protected from storms. Some things simply needed to be broken off...Once old thing were broken off, amazingly beautiful thing could grow in their place.”

----Denise Hildreth Jones

Katie Hamstead, an Australian author, has penned a heart wrenching tale of love and second chances in her book, Deceptive Cadence, which is the first book in the Cadence series. This book unfolds the story of a woman who lost her family in an earthquake, following which she gets an opport

The book is split into two parts. We have Cadence’s part & James’s part.
The beginning of this book broke me fucking heart. It was so sad, you could feel the grief and the loss of husband and child of what Cadence was experiencing.
If you offered the opportunity of a lifetime to go back to the age of fourteen and start all over again to save the two people who you loved most in your life would you? Would you go back and do it all again? With what you know now?
Cadence agrees to this choice and

Twenty-five year old Cadence has a happy life with her husband Austin and baby daughter Melody. Then she wakes in the hospital after a mysterious earthquake/accident and discovers that her husband and daughter are both dead. The first chapter alone nearly had me in tears, especially when Cadence visited the morgue and held her infant's body. Any mother (or really any human with feelings) would feel for Cadence and support her desire to do absolutely anything to get her family back.

Then the magic

Deceptive Cadence falls more into the Young Adult genre, however the concept, the age in which Cadence truly is, is all new adult. Time travel takes Cadence back to age 14, giving her an opportunity to relive her life, and save the life of her future husband and child, both lost to a terrifying accident. Cadence flits between being a young twenty year old to being the 14 year old th

This YA story delved into how each choice we make has consequences on not only our lives, but others around us as well. The basic concept is that Cadence wakes up in a hospital to find that her husband and baby have died in an earthquake. She’s inconsolable until an angel comes and tells her she gets the chance to do it all over again and have the chance to save her husband and child. She awakes to find herself in 9th grade, reliving her life with her memories of the future still intact. She cor ...more

The author of Deceptive Cadence gave me the honor to beta read this manuscript and to fall in love with James.
I think James has become one of my favorite bad boys.
This story starts with a very different Cadence, an adult in love and with a child. I went through her pain and loss with tears. Praying for her second chance to recover her family. But when she got back and I met James through her I didn’t wanted as much for her to get back to her husband. Of course I, being a mom, wanted her to get h

I admit, DECEPTIVE CADENCE is the ultimate feel-good tale of a girl who gets a second chance at happiness after tragedy strikes. Her second time around – eleven years into the past – she’s able to approach every important decision she ever made as a teenager with the experience of having lived a completely different life, giving her the possibility to keep the friendships she lost, strengthen her relationship with her family, and potentially make the choices that would eventually save the life o ...more

I was extremely excited when I was contacted by Katie Homstead and asked to review her upcoming novel, Deceptive Cadence. I had not read anything by Katie but as soon as I read the premises for this book I was determined to convince her I needed to be a part of her blog tour and luckily for me, she agreed :) The concept behind the book is truly fascinating; after Cadence tragically loses her family in an earthquake she’s given an astounding opportunity to go back into her past, with all the know ...more

Candace's life was perfect until the unthinkable happened. Now she has a serious choice to make. Does she live with the gut wrenching pain that is now her life or does she redo her life? How many of yes have thought "if only I did this differently". The premise to this story is great and the plot is well thought out and beautifully told.
I went into this book blind as I didn't want to know even the synopsis. I'm glad I did because as the story unfolded, I was completely surprised.

This book piqued my interest, when I saw it on the YA Bound Books site, with the author, Katie Hamstead, offering it up for review. Hooked by the premise - a guardian angel offering a second chance- I leapt at the chance to review it. It sounded sweet, a cute contemporary novel with hints of fantasy. I wasn't disappointed either - Deceptive Cadence was AMAZING.

‘Deceptive Cadence’ sounded really intriguing to me right from the go; sort of like a mix between the earthly and heavenly which I found absolutely captivating. I was incredibly eager – some may say over-eager – to read this novel as the whole aspect of being given a second chance and going back in time to right wrongs was something I couldn't deny.
I also must strongly recommend this nov

Okay, I’ve been on a bit of a reading hiatus and just have not been into it. I needed to just read these and get it done to put up my reviews. These books turned into so much more than a deadline. This will be the most random, all over the place review. I just am having the hardest time coming up with how to review these books because they were just so good. I devoured both books in one day. I did absolutely nothing else but read these. So here is the first book…

Every now and then, a book comes across your desk and you just know you’re going to love it from the second you read the blurb. Admittedly, Deceptive Cadence was not that book for me. The premise was intriguing, sure, but it didn’t necessarily grab me immediately based on the concept. But boy oh boy was I wrong about that. This book is, in a word, brilliant.

Hamstead’s latest seems deceptively (yes, pun intended) straight-forward. As the blurb indicates, it’s about a woman who abruptly loses the

I was hooked from the very beginning of this book and the opening chapter was very emotional. This story is full of happiness, sadness, inspiration, loss, heartbreak, romance, and drama – perfect for a young adult/new adult contemporary romance. The main character Cadence is very likeable and relatable and all the other characters are well developed and interesting. The book is well written, easy to read, and has realistic dialogue between the characters. There were a few slow parts in the book, ...more

Hamstead has done it again! I absolutely adore this book (and its sequel). Deceptive Cadence is an amazing story about love, tragedy, and second chances. Each page drips with emotion, compelling readers to turn page after page! I thoroughly enjoy Hamstead's straightforward writing style, she has a way of painting scenes in such a real, easily imaginable way. This is definitely one of Hamstead's best books, in my opinion. This was an enjoyable read. I thought the story was engaging and interesting. I thought that Cadence was a wonderful character. Her grief for her husband and child was really sad to read. I can’t imagine what that would feel like. She has the chance to go back and redo her life, so she takes it. Traveling back to when she was 14 to be reunited with her husband. However, as she go back, the plot starts to change as she meets Jame

Deceptive Cadence is absolutely amazing. It shows how our choices in life affects not only ourselves, but the lives of others around us.

She is visited by an angel whilst in the hospital, and is given a chance to go back and attempt to save her husband and child. Haven’t you ever wondered if you could go back with the knowledge you have now what would you do differently? I know I have! That’s what hooked me into reading this book.

Now with the knowledge of her adult life and the loss of her husband and daughter she goes back to high school which is several years before she met her husband. Right then I would have had red flags. Why do I need to go that far back?

Deceptive Cadence is a heart warming story about a girl who gets a second chance at life. At the start of the novel, Cadence wakes up in hospital to find out the most horrible news a wife and mother can hear: that her husband and young daughter have died. As you can imagine, Cadence is distraught. But then the incredible happens: an angel offers her the chance to relive her teen life so she can change what happens to her family and save them.

Since chapter one, this novel has been a struggle to read. This is not ultimately a bad thing, it just had me on the brink of crying. Especially when Cadence visited the morgue and was holding her infant child in her arms. I felt truly torn when I read that part, feeling the need to support Cadence. From then on, things got (semi) lighter. Especially when meeting the guardian angel that ultimately offers Cadence to go back in time to save her child and her husband. By Katie Hamstead

Wow this book shocked and captivated me right from the very beginning. Cadence Anderson has a husband, Austin and a child whose lives are lost in an earthquake. This was very difficult to read since I too have a husband and small child. The book was so well written you felt like you were in Cadence’s shoes during the life altering events. While in the hospital Cadence is visited by an angel who gives her the opportunity to go

I always liked the idea of adding time travel in a novel. But in the case of "Deceptive Cadence" time travel comes as a part of an angel's powers who offers a chance for living your life again.
In order to save her future Cadence travels to the past, in the body of her 14 years old; she'll have to deal with high school, mostly hormones and in many cases bullying.

I don't usually expect much from ARCs so I was actually surprised that I enjoyed this book. It was quite captivating. The going back in time for a second chance was a fresh spin on the typical YA love stories. I liked that this story takes place over several years and we see what happens to several people as time goes on. Since we get glimpses into two parallel worlds, we get to see how seemingly small choices can make a big difference in so many people's lives. I found myself cheering for Caden ...more

If you could go back in time, knowing what you know now, would what you change? What would you keep the same? I don't read a lot of time travel books but this one I enjoyed immensely. It started out questionable since I was hoping for a typical New Adult book but in this story a adult goes back in time to high school and relieves her past to change the future. Armed with the knowledge of adulthood Cadence is able to navigate her late teen years with ease, until the heart throb of the story crosses her path! At first, I was not very impressed with this book. The whole premise seemed weird and silly (why go back in time so far to change something, especially something that was an accident..?!), and while it was marketed as a “new adult” book, at first it struck me as for younger readers. However, for some reason, I kept reading. I am glad I did, because this ended up being a well-written book. A “second chance” is an interesting concept, and although oc

The initial description of the book put me off slightly but from the first chapter I was hooked on the writing and the story line. If you got a chance to have a do over in life would you want it to turn out the same? This is the challenge of Cadence Anderson after a tragedy robs her of husband and child. What unfolds is a heartwarming and sweet story (with a cliffhanger)!! Can't wait for the next instalment.
