Peeping Toms of the Atmosphere

Peeping Toms of the Atmosphere

Dayum, I love the solar system. As a kid, it was the only part of Physics’ classes I could tolerate. The stars, the planets, the moons and the sheer vastness of space has had me enthralled since I sported invisible braces. And now, with the ISS and their Earth-Watching cam, I can look down at Earth as though I were above it! Woohoo. I loved learning about the solar system, but I’ll be honest and…

Pollution Solution?

Considering the minimum we’re supposed to drink is around-what?-a liter and a half, I reckon this is an alternative solution but not the most practical.

Cloaked in Danger

MY REVIEW:

Cloaked in Danger

By: Jeannie Ruesch

MY REVIEW:

FOUR STARS

Jeannie Ruesch’s Cloaked In Danger was a natty read. It took a while for me to actually get into the story and I’ll be honest and say I gave up a few times and restarted at a later date. The first chapter or so, even though there was a ‘hook’, just didn’t grab me. But I persevered and I was glad I did.

Aria and Adam, the central characters, are unusual and not of the regular Regency hero/heroine construction. This was both good and bad. There were slips that were a little irritating. When I read a Regency book, I don’t expect to hear modern sayings or modern syntax and there was quite a few of these slips.

She needed a plan, period.

I highly doubt Regency misses thought that way. But maybe I’m too focused on the Heyer type of Regency tales?

Even though Aria is an unusual woman for the ton, she was too modern. She wasn’t independent as we class it today, still living with her father and unmarried, but he gave her freedom and it gave her guts and gumption, which came through and made her a likeable character. Still, with no experience with the opposite sex, her lusty thoughts seemed out of place. I’m not averse to erotic scenes in Regency romances, but the tone didn’t match. Again, it pushed me out of the story, but maybe I’m just being finicky. Where these Regency tales are concerned, I find these things make a story authentic, which is why I want to read them. I know not every heroine has to blush at the thought of a man’s body, but still… it just jerked me out of the scene.

Adam was rather sweet in his own way; the desire to remain unmarried until his sisters were wed is quite charming. He was protective without being irritating and in truth, I preferred him as a character to Aria.

All in all, I enjoyed the story. I liked the concept; Aria flittering about the ton’s ballrooms in search for clues as to the whereabouts of her missing Papa. But I’d have liked more background on the archaeological aspects of the story. An addition of some history or a touch of the exotic might have added a bit of spice to the intrigue, which was well written and well constructed.

A solid four stars. I’m knocking off the star for the above points. Definitely worth a read and a good time investment for whiling away a lazy Sunday :)

Aria Whitney has little in common with the delicate ladies of London society. Her famous father made his fortune hunting archaeological treasures, and her rustic upbringing has left her ill-prepared for a life of parties and frippery. But when Gideon Whitney goes missing, Aria must embrace the unknown—armed with only the short list of highborn men who’d backed her father’s venture, she poses as a woman looking for a husband. She doesn’t intend to find one.

Adam Willoughby, Earl of Merewood, finds London’s strangest new debutante fascinating, but when he  catches her investigating his family’s secrets, he threatens to ruin her reputation. He doesn’t intend to enjoy it so much.

When their lustful indiscretion is discovered, Adam finds that he regrets nothing. But now, as her father’s enemy draws near, Adam must convince his betrothed that she can trust him with her own secrets…before it’s too late.

“Cloaked in Danger is perfect for those who love a good mystery in their romance.”— Eye on Romance

“In ‘Cloaked in Danger’ Jeannie Ruesch has crafted a taut, emotional thrill-ride through the streets of Regency London. Archaeological adventure and drawing room intrigue are combined in a story that will keep you reading late into the night. Jeannie Ruesch is an author to watch.”
— RITA Award Nominated Author Elizabeth Essex

“Cloaked in Danger has all the elements readers crave— larger-than-life characters, a vivid and believable setting, heart-pounding romance and just the right amount of mystery. Don’t miss it! It kept me reading deep into the night.”
— New York Times Bestselling Author Brenda Novak

Author Info

Jeannie Ruesch wrote her first story at the age of the six, prompting her to give up an illustrious, hours-long ambition of becoming a Dallas Cowboy Cheerleader and declare that writing was her destiny. That journey to destiny took a few detours along the way, including a career in marketing and design.

Her first novel, a fairy-tale like historical romance, was published in 2009, but the darker side of life had always captivated her. So after a dinner conversation with friends about the best way to hide a dead body, she knew she had to find a way to incorporate suspense into her writing. (The legal outlet for her fascination.) Today, she continues writing what she loves to read - stories of history, romance and suspense. She lives in Northern California with her husband, their son and an 80 pound lapdog lab named Cooper. She can be visited at www.jeannieruesch.com or found regularly on Twitter or Facebook.

She is also the creator of the WIP Notebook, a writer’s tool to help stay organized while you write, which you can find at her website.

Dr. Sam Burnside is convinced that volunteering at an urban green-space farm in Lakefield, Ohio, is a waste of time—especially with his new health clinic about to open. He only goes to mollify his partner, suspecting she wants him to lighten up. Then Sam catches sight of Nina Paz, a woman who gives off more heat than a scorcher in July. Her easy smile and flirty, sizzling wit has him forgetting his infamous need for control.

Widowed when her husband was killed in Afghanistan, Nina has learned that life exists to take chances. As the daughter of migrant workers turned organic farmers, she’s built an exciting and successful business by valuing new opportunities and working hard to take care of her own. But when Sam pushes for a relationship that goes beyond their hotter-than-fire escapades, Nina ignores her own hard-won wisdom. She isn’t ready for a man who needs saving—even if her heart compels her to take the greatest risk of all: love.
