Introducing Phillip Hoffmann, philosopher, musician and author of My Left Thumb.

I'm thrilled to get to introduce a new friend and co-worker at BWL Publishing! Phil has a great new book out called "My Left Thumb" that I'm interested in checking out!

Phillip Hoffmann is a dual Australian-Canadian citizen who holds a PhD in philosophy from the University of Calgary, specializing in the philosophy of science. He is the author of three books including Nothing So Absurd: An Invitation to Philosophy (Broadview Press, 2003). In addition to conducting online philosophy tutorials and sitting on numerous volunteer organization boards, his interests include composing and recording acoustic fingerstyle guitar music, and collecting antique Persian rugs. He lives in Airdrie, Alberta.

How many hours a day to you write? None, LOL! Unless I’m staring at a deadline for the occasional (usually unpaid!) freelance writing request, I have always written for pleasure only when the Muses visit, which makes me a truly terrible role model for any aspiring writer. For discipline, Hemingway is the guy.
What is your favorite childhood book?"Der Struwwelpeter” (don’t try to pronounce it!). My background is German-Australian, and it’s a dystopian children's book that traumatized generations of German kids with stories about what would happen to them if they dared to be so disobedient as to do things like suck their thumbs! Later on, however, it became something of a cult classic among Germans of my generation. Go figure!
What inspired you to write this book? It was originally a COVID-era project that arose from a nagging desire I had at the time to gather together various philosophical papers, essays and talks I’d accumulated over the years into book form, so it wasn’t much of a stretch at the time, which was convenient because I’m basically lazy. For the second edition for BWL, I expanded it considerably by adding five new essays to the original 15.
Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?  I see myself lolling on a beach in Tahiti trying to figure out how to spend my royalty cheques. Kidding. I’ll be interested to find out the extent to which I’m prompted to modify or refine the positions I’ve worked out on topics such as free will, information, and above all the nature and importance of objective truth. I must say, the craziness of the last few years has left me feeling pretty vindicated about my position on truth.
How many unpublished and half-finished books do you have? None, except for a half-written co-write project with a physicist friend of mine in Australia that has been dormant for a few years. That said, I’m always keenly aware that it doesn’t take much for something to grab my attention and compel me to write at any time.
Was there a person who encouraged you to write? Too many to mention, from encouraging teachers and inspiring professors to a long list of authors I’ve admired and venerated throughout my life, starting with Shakespeare. For essay writing, two authors who are heroes of mine are the late Lewis Thomas and Annie Dillard (for her pitch-perfect prose). Among novelists, Thomas Pynchon and George Eliot are two names that come to mind, and of philosophers, Plato, David Lewis and Daniel Dennett are three among very many who inspire me.

My Left Thumb: Philosophical Essays (Second Edition)
This collection of philosophical essays reflects the author’s views and perspectives on a wide range of themes and topics, including the philosophy of science, metaphysics, language, truth, knowledge, free will, reality and meaning. Lively, accessible, breezy, thought-provoking and frequently entertaining, this expanded second edition represents two decades of Hoffmann’s progress in grappling with these fascinating issues, as well as his efforts to share his fascination with general audiences wanting to dip their toes into philosophy.

Nothing So Absurd: An Invitation to Philosophy

Written in clear, non-technical language, Nothing So Absurd is a succinct and accessible introduction to topics in the history of Western philosophy. In seven concise chapters, the author introduces the reader to the central topics within the discipline. In some cases (such as metaphysics and epistemology) he adopts a historical approach, while in others (such as ethics and philosophy of religion) the focus is as much on contemporary issues as it is on historical developments. In each area, he presents material of great intrinsic interest in a fashion that also provides a sense of the broad sweep of the discipline.

This book provides a fair-minded exposition of a wide-range of viewpoints throughout, and dwells, in its final chapter, on the virtues of philosophical realism, thus presenting the reader with the opportunity to engage with a direct philosophical argument. A guide to further reading will assist readers new to philosophy.

The School of the Haunted River by the late Colleen Gerwing is a moving novel set in northern-Saskatchewan.

The School of the Haunted River by the late Colleen Gerwing is a luminous andmoving semi-autobigraphical novel set in northern-Saskatchewan wilderness she loved.

In The School of the Haunted River, thelate Saskatoon author and outdoorswoman Colleen Gerwing drew on her deep knowledgeand love of the outdoors to craft the semi-autobiographical tale of a an auntand her niece, Jay and Dilly, on a mid-winter snowshoe trek in northernSaskatchewan. During the trip, Jay recounts her experiences in an outdooreducation school and her own epic solo canoe trip across the north many yearspreviously. As Jay and Dilly grow closer, the older woman gains newunderstanding into her own life.

Gerwing died in 2021,never seeing her work through to publication. Her final editor was notedSaskatchewan writer dee Hobsbawn-Smith, who as writer-in-residence at theSaskatoon public library worked extensively with Gerwing her original draft.

“In her earlymanuscript, Colleen had drawn on her life’s experiences . . . a lifetime ofcanoeing, hiking, camping, backpacking, and outdoor adventure,” notesHobsbawn-Smith in her introduction to the book. “In 2021, the draft Colleenpresented me with for editing had, in the intervening years and work with otherwriters, undergone the same type of pressure that coal undergoes intransforming into gemstone. That is to say, Colleen found her story and how shewanted to tell it and set about polishing the rough edges until the clear and shiningstory that was her novel emerged . . . Here is her story, distilled from herown life and her own lived experience, recast as a novel, The School of theHaunted River. She left the world a better place.”

Publication of thebook was initiated and overseen by Gerwing’s partner, MaryAnne Roettger, whoalso contributed the preface. The cover art is a painting by Gerwing, who wasalso a talented artist.

“I was thrilled to be asked to bring this wonderfulbook to publication,” says Edward Willett, editor and publisher of Endless SkyBooks. “I never met Colleen Gerwing in real life, but I feel I’ve gotten toknow her through reading her novel—and gotten to know and understand our ownprovince’s north in a way I never have before. I can’t wait for readers toexperience The School of the Haunted River.”

The School of theHaunted River can be orderedthrough most bookstores, online and off . It can also be purchased directlyfrom Endless Sky Books at www.endless-sky-books.com

More about the book

We are all bornof a river, and that in itself should be enough.

On a two-week outdoorwinter snowshoeing trip in northern Saskatchewan with her niece Dilly, outdoor adventurerJay tells stories as they hike and camp. Some are true – her outdoor trainingin Wyoming, her early life on the farm – and some are stories within storieswithin stories. A faux diamond necklace that mysteriously appears anddisappears, Jay’s youthful encounters with the mysterious Cowboy, an inspiringseries of books that she read on her long-ago canoe trip alone – all areunderscored by Jay’s love and respect for the wild.

In The School of the Haunted River, the late Colleen Gerwing fashioned anovel based on her own life as an outdoorswoman, a novel about the naturalworld that will haunt and enchant even as it educates you.

About the Author

Canoeing, cross-country skiing, horseback riding, wintercamping—she loved being out in the natural world, often by herself.

Colleen began her workwith Parks Canada at Fort Walsh near Cypress Hills and at Riding MountainNational Park in Manitoba, but mostly worked at her favourite place, PrinceAlbert National Park. Grey Owl, the naturalist, was one of her heroes for allhis flaws, and she became friends with his wife, Anahareo, and their daughter,Dawn. In winter, Colleen studied French in Quebec or German in Germany and Creein Saskatoon. She was a wonderful painter and favoured painting paddles androcks as well as canvases. “With tender care anddeep empirical knowledge gained over many years, Colleen Gerwing invitesreaders into the landscape she loves best: northern Saskatchewan. This autobiographicalnovel’s language, imagery, narrative flow, and characters all bring her storyto vibrant and compelling life. Jill Robinson, award-winning author of More in Anger

“Colleen Gerwing was a marvellousnaturalist.  Whenever I went into the boreal forest with Colleen, I was preparedto learn something new, and often surprising, about the forest and itsinhabitants. July 2023 Round Robin Blog Fest - Character Arcs

So I've had a crazy couple of months with moving across Canada and getting settled back in Alberta after living in Ontario for nearly 20 years. I'm slowly getting back to the business of writing and working even more closely with my publisher of 10 years, BWL Publishing! It's fun to see all the hard work I've done come back and all tie together. Speaking of tying things together, this is our topic of the month:

How important is Character Arc to your stories and how does it tie into the plot or story arc? Do you usually give some time and story to character arcs for secondary characters?

Since I am elbow deep into writing my next Gilda Wright Mystery, I'm already dealing with exactly those topics. Without giving much away,--mostly because I'm not that far into writing it--I can say that Gilda's Character Arc is going to be huge in this book. It ties directly into the plot for Dead Without Malice because of the inner struggle she is dealing with AND that she now has her mother back in town which will hugely affect her Character Arc!
For those who have not read the series, Gilda Wright joined a karate school after a bad breakup with a boyfriend (who happens to be a local police officer). She also ended up working at the school and having a romance with her boss. Which hasn't worked out the way she'd hoped. Along the way, she's also solved mysteries and gotten into more trouble than she'd ever anticipated. Her last mystery saw her badly beaten and in another one, she was kidnapped with her "fairy godfather", Gary del Garda.
Spoiler alert. Gary doesn't fare well in Dead Without Malice, and Gilda must struggle with grieving the loss of her friend as well as solving his death. Okay, that will be in the blub on the back cover!
As far as my secondary characters, Gilda's friend, Kane Garrick, will undergo his own large Character Arc. He has grown a great deal since his appearance in Dead Without Glory, but has always kept a bit of a shady side hidden from her. It will come back to haunt him in the new book and create a struggle for him as well. Yesterday morning, I wrote out a whole scene where he comes clean about a few things in his past and why he moves around so much.
As per a good friend of mine who has been a karate sensei for many years, this book will contain a lot more karate! Especially since Gilda is gearing up for her Black Belt Grading.
Will she do it in this book or will she walk away from it all and not bother?I guess we'll have to wait and see!

Happy birthday to ME!! Updates of Things to Come!

Yes, my real, yummy birthday cake!!
I can honestly say this has been a HUGE year for changes with more to come.
There have been a few constants--my Escape With a Writer Blog, my feline companions, my family, and many friends--but a lot of other things have changed and will keep on evolving.

I've moved across Canada from Ontario to Alberta, which is more of a homecoming since I was born and raised here.I now have my own business (Escape With a Writer!) and am working closely with my publisher of the past 10 years, BWL Publishing Ltd. Currently, we are setting up a Shopify store - Links to come. And there is big news with the additions of a new author who is a member of the Canadian Music Hall of Fame!Oh, and I'll be training with BWL to eventually take over the publishing reins. Lots to learn there. Under the banner of Escape With a Writer, will not only be the blog, but I'm madly plotting a podcast to feature amazing authors and other people who I think are just plain fascinating! I have a lot of learning to do for that yet since I'm busy going down rabbit holes to learn about so many things right now.Heading out to a couple great writing conferences. One is When Words Collide coming soon to Calgary.

Capturing Skunk Alpha

ABarrio Sailor's Journey in Vietnam

Thenewest riveting memoir by Vietnam veteran and critically acclaimed author, Raúl Herrera

Released and published by Texas Tech University Press

The book is available worldwide in e-book and print

On the evening of July 11, 1967, a Navy surveillance aircraft spotted a suspicious trawler ininternational waters heading toward theQuang Ngai coast of South Vietnam. While the ship tried to appear innocuouson its deck, Saigon quickly identified it as anenemy gunrunner, codenamed Skunk Alpha.

A four-seaborne intercept task force wasestablished and formed a barrier inside South Vietnam’s twelve-mile territorial boundary. Asthe enemy ship ignored all orders to surrender and neared the Sa Ky River atthe tip of the Batangan Peninsula, Swift Boat PCF-79 was ordered to take the trawlerunder fire.

What followed was ship-to-ship combat action notseen since World War II. Capturing Skunk Alpha relates thatbreathtaking military encounter to readers for the first time.  But Capturing Skunk Alpha is also the tale of one sailor’s journey to the deck of PCF-79.Two years earlier, Raúl Herrera was growing up on the west side of San Antonio,Texas, when he answered the call to duty and joined the US Navy. Raúl wasassigned to PCF Crew Training and joined a ragtag six-man Swift Boat crew witha mission to prevent the infiltration of resupply ships from North Vietnam.

The brave sailors who steered into harm’s way in war-torn Vietnam would keepmore than ninety tons of ammunition and supplies from the Viet Cong and NVAforces. The Viet Cong would post a bounty on PCF-79; Premier Nguyễn Cao Kỳ and Chief of State Nguyễn Văn
Thiệu would congratulate and decorate them for their heroism. CapturingSkunk Alpha provides an eyewitness account of a pivotal moment in Navy operations while also chroniclingone sailor’s unlikely journey from barrio adolescence to perilous combat actionon the high seas.

Schachte Jr. (Rear Admiral, JAGC, USN Ret.)

"This is a true storyof what Swift Boats and their gallant crews accomplished during that underappreciated war in South Vietnam. Capturing Skunk Alpha will secure our honorable place in US militaryhistory."--Captain Edward J. Bergin (USNR, Ret.)
