Light Come Out of the Closet:

Memoir of a Gay Soul

Dr. Roger Leslie’s newest memoir that speaks to how heopened up his life and elevated his destiny!

The book is published by Paradise Publishing and will be availablethis June worldwide in print and e-book format

Knowing as aboy that I was gay while growing up in a conservative religious environmentleft me confused, depressed, and eventually suicidal. Quite early, I came toterms with the fact that I was gay. But as a spiritual person, I assumed thatmy sexual orientation meant that I was fundamentally flawed and would have tolive without love.

That terrifying revelation directed me toward an unprecedented journeythat opened my life and elevated my destiny. My determination to live—andlove—lit my path on the journey that redefined my life, showed me what mettle Iwas made of, and revealed to me my soul.

The rewards for recognizing my value and committing my energy tothriving rather than just surviving in secret have resulted in my becoming aprolific, award-winning author and renowned international speaker.

Welcome to Canadian Mystery Writer, Samara Yew!

Welcome to Canadian mystery writer, Samara Yew! I'm so excited to find out more about her and her books!

Samara Yew is the author of the Rose Shore Mysteries (underthe name Holly Yew) and the California Bookshop Mysteries. A full-time mom,full-time dog servant, and part-time writer, Samara lives in British Columbia,Canada, where she can often be found watching Psych reruns.Samara loves to travel, especially visiting her husband’s home country ofSingapore or donning Mickey ears in Disneyland. She’s a member of Sisters inCrime and International Thriller Writers.

What would you say areyour strengths as an author?

Well, my strengths are apparently not answering interviewquestions because I’ve been staring at this question for a long time now.

I would say a strength of mine is creating well-rounded andinteresting characters in my novels, especially writing about strongfriendships and women supporting one another.

Howoften do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

I’m a mom to a two-year-old, so I writewhen the baby writes. Isn’t that how the saying goes?

I get up to write an hour before my kiddotypically gets up, and then I write during his nap in the afternoons (whichseems to be getting shorter and shorter each day.) I sometimes write in theevenings, usually only when I’m on a deadline, but I try to avoid doing so toooften to evade burnout. Besides, when else would I watch Downton Abbey for the 47th time if I didn’t have myevenings?

Five years from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

I would love to see both the Rose ShoreMysteries and the California Bookshop Mysteries continue to grow, but I wouldalso like to step outside the cozy mystery genre. I’ve had something historicalfloating around in the back of my mind for a while now. Maybe in five years,I’ll actually have made some headway with that.

If you could offer onepiece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

To make connections with other authors because they are the bestcheerleaders for writing a book! Social media and writing groups are great waysto do this. I’m a member of the writing organization Sisters in Crime, and notonly is it a wonderful place to discover other mystery authors, but it also hasa lot of educational benefits such as their free webinars. These webinars offertips on everything from craft to marketing.

What would you considerto be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

If a reader shared my books with a fellow bookworm and said, “hey,I think you’d love this book,” that would be an amazing compliment. But I thinkmy favorite praise from a Netgalley reviewer for Murder by the Seashore is “OHHHH. The twists kept coming and Icouldn’t put it down!” I love this because I worked very hard to include allthose twists, and I love that readers are enjoying them!

What are you working onnow?

I am currently waiting for Book 2 of the Rose Shore Mysteries tobe edited with my publisher, and while I wait, I’m typing in the final touchesfor Book 3 as well as working on Book 2 of the California Bookshop Mysteries.

A Little Archaeology

View of Spread Eagle Mountain, Alberta

The more packing and sorting I've done for my trip across Canada, the more I've discovered what an amazing life the kids and I have led so far! For example, I found a book I kept with photos of my art work from when I first moved to Orangeville. I'd never really painted until moving here and found it a great way to get to meet other people. I've been blessed to learn from so many talented people: the late Darlene Hassel, Sharon Wadsworth-Smith, Claudia McCabe, and so many more. While I may not be the world's best artist, I sold a couple paintings and created pieces that live in the homes of friends and family.
The field and mountains picture above has special significance. It was one I started painting the same day my father-in-law had a heart attack - which I only learned the next day! I couldn't touch it for a week. Once it was complete, I sent it to my brother-in-law, Robyn, because it was a story that really touched him. What's the significance of the painting aside from that? At the time, it was nearly the same view my in-laws had out their front window.

Calico Pennant, Orangeville Fall Fair

Mom isn't the only one who has ribbons and has done cool things!
Before moving to Ontario, two of my kids were classical guitarists and performed on stage several times with Sonata Studios in Edmonton. Too bad we moved and couldn't find a teacher who believed in giving kids the courage to put themselves out there. The one classical guitarist we did find was totally against putting so much pressure on kids. The memories of my boys practicing because they loved to play still warms my heart!
They've also done Rowing, Chess Club, interesting jobs in restaurants and manufacturing facilities, camping out in Calgary Zoo and at Tyrell Museum in Drumheller, things I'd long forgotten!
The Swimming Hole, 2005

Another fun story! This image was from a calendar that my mother-in-law sent. I turned it into Grandpa and the two older boys and sent it to him for Father's Day 2005. He was thrilled! The grandparents loved to do all kinds of things with the kids and although this is a fictional painting, we definitely spent time at the beach with them.
It's amazing how much you learn about yourself and your offspring when you go through boxes and boxes and boxes of school photos, school work, and notes from others. I have a whole new appreciation for us all!
Packing the car happens tomorrow. I may have over-estimated how much I can pack, but I definitely have learned a great deal over the past two month.Including what I can and can't live without!
It's been wonderful spending time with friends and saying things that normally we might not say. Like "I Love You." There has been a lot of that. Even from friends I never expected to hear it from.
One thing I have not said - and refuse to say - is "goodbye". My parting phrase is "I'll see you later."And I mean it!
I'll let you know how packing the car goes!!
Happy Sunday,Diane

A Bit of Disruption While I Move

ROAD TRIP!

My life has taken a bit of a turn lately and is currently mostly in boxes.

I've decided to return to Alberta where I was born and raised and take my two lovely kitties - aka The Hallellujah Choir - with me. So here I am at the age of 54 getting rid of everything by my cherished possessions, quitting my job (Last day today!) and moving across the country with my cats.

Jazz and Ash aren't too sure what's going on. They know what the boxes mean but have no idea they'll be spending 4 nights in hotels and moving to a new home.

Over the past two months, I've been scurrying to find a place to live and a new car. Why the car? I've been locked out 4 times by a short in the wiring and ended up crawling in through the trunk, setting off the alarm system, and driving across town with the horn blaring. Not fun! The last time, I gave in. I called a friend whose son works for a local dealership and got a great new car!! One I feel safe and comfortable in AND has a bit more space for all the books I'm taking on my move.

Happy to say all the pieces have been falling into place. Even a great new job on the horizon that I will share once I have more information. May need to get a part time gig for a while, but that's nothing I haven't done before. I'll definitely keep writing books. Editing books. All the fun marketing stuff that goes along with being a writer!

So, the blog will be sketchy for the next couple week while I move and get settled. I'll try to keep up and let you all know how things are going!

In the meantime, I have a few more great lunches, dinners, coffees and so on with amazing friends I've made since we moved here in 2005. Orangeville is definitely a fabulous place and I leave knowing that I will come back to visit - and do a book launch for the fantasy novel I'm writing with my dear friend, Gary!!

One thing I have come to enjoy is meeting and spending time with other fantastic writers and I look forward to meeting many more. I've been very blessed during my time here even if it didn't feel that way at the time. Sometimes it takes leaving somewhere to find out how many really good friends and experiencies you have had.

For today, I'm off to work for my last day at Theatre Orangeville - which has been a huge learning experience!! Then home to do more packing, scanning, and so on. Also a little daydreaming about my new place and where I'll set up my office/writing nook.

Have a fantastic day! Much more to come!!

Diane (and the Hallelujah Choir!)

Daughterof Hades first depicts the story of Dinny and Jimmie, twin brother and sisterwho have grown up as enslaved people on a plantation in Barbados. When Dinny’slife faces more threats as the master’s infatuation with her grows, thesiblings make their way onto a pirate ship. Though safety will not come yet forthe two siblings, it seems that love is in the cards for at least one of them,as Dinny falls in love with a Chinese sailor named Lei.

Thestoryline alternates with another set of siblings: two brothers named Ivan andPax as they desperately try to make their way to Jamaica. The two storylineseventually clash and the two sets of siblings are faced with a Rolodex ofsuspenseful events that bring to light pain, romance, and survival, in anycondition.

The book gets its inspiration from the longand harrowing history of slavery in the Caribbean. It is one of the most excitinghistorical fiction novels with a story that is still relevant today.

ButDaughters of Hades is much more than a lesson of Caribbean history and theeffects slavery has on these siblings. The Malevolent Seven, a new fantasy novel from Sebastien de Castell

“Seven powerful mageswant to make the world a better place. We’re going to kill them first.”

Picture a wizard. Goahead, close your eyes. There he is, see? Skinny old guy with a long stragglybeard. No doubt he’s wearing iridescent silk robes that couldn’t protect hisfrail body from a light breeze. That hat’s a must, too, right? Big, floppything, covered in esoteric symbols that would instantly show every other magewhere this one gets his magic? Wouldn’t want a simple steel helmet or somethingthat might, you know, protect the part of him most needed for conjuring magicalforces from being bashed in with a mace (or pretty much any household object).

Now open your eyes andlet me show you what a real war mage looks like…but be warned: you’re probablynot going to like it, because we’re violent, angry, dangerously broken peoplewho sell our skills to the highest bidder and be damned to any moral or ethicalconsiderations.

At least, until suchirritating concepts as friendship and the end of the world get in the way.

My name is Cade Ombra, and though I currently make my living as a mercenary wonderist, I used to havea far more noble-sounding job title – until I discovered the people I workedfor weren’t quite as noble as I’d believed. Now I’m on the run and my onlyfriend, a homicidal thunder mage, has invited me to join him on a suicidemission against the seven deadliest mages on the continent.

Time to rescue somevery bad people to help us on this job…

Four hours later he realizedhow much he actually hated archaeology and left to pursue a very focused careeras a musician, ombudsman, interaction designer, fight choreographer, teacher, project manager, actor, and product strategist.

His only defenceagainst the charge of unbridled dilettantism is that he genuinely likes doingthese things and that, in one way or another, each of these fieldsplays a role in his writing. He sternly resists the accusation of being aRenaissance Man in the hopes that more people will label him that way.
