Praise For Cult of Dracula:
“It was tragicin the best possible way. The series hasits bloody grindhouse moments so far, but where it rises above superficialshock is in it’s building sense of unavoidable doom. There’s so much pain and loss with theindividual characters that you can’t help but feel some sympathy for thetroubled lives they carry with them.” _ Gabriel Hernandez, ComicalOpinions
“Cult of Dracula is not taking a straight line approach toadapting Stoker’s classic. There are angles aplenty, with narrative leaps &some impressively off-putting dialogue.” _ The Pull Box
“Calzada meets Davis’s imagination at each turn and makes the act ofturning the page a nightmare itself. Thepartnership is reminiscent of Robert Kirkman and Charlie Adlard, The longtenured team of the Walking Dead comic book series” Chase Harrison , Horrorgeeklife.com

Jo vanHoogmoed launches her debut novel A Beginner's Guide to Separation Anxiety

Introducing a brand new author!!
Jo vanHoodmoed is a local friend and author that I'm thrilled to feature!

‘A Beginner’s Guide toSeparation Anxiety’ (aka ABGTSA) was the silliest thing – a lovelorn nerd and atalking dog – Jo vanHoogmoed could think of because she didn’t want to reveal –to the Write-Your-Novel course attendees – any of her well-thought-outstorylines. But the more Jo wrote, the more she fell in love with thecharacters, and when characters are loved, their story needs to be told.
Computers andtelecommunications have been Jo’s gig since she was 17 (1972) when she (a)began her computer education at Dawson College (Montreal) and (b) secured apart-time job as a junior computer operations clerk for Canadian InternationalPaper (also Montreal). She’s come a long way since then. She moved to Torontoat 19 and started her own consulting company, then joined ranks individually, not all at once, with TELUS, Bell Canada, Motorola, Sprint, Canadian SatelliteCommunications, Government of Ontario, plus a few other telco and non-telcocompanies where she held technical and/or management positions in marketing, engineering and sales.
Her pre-retirement writing tooka non-fiction, dry-as-dust route in the form of technical plans, businessproposals, and other thrilling work-related material. During that time, hernon-work writing was nurtured by writing courses and ‘Meet the Author’ venues(thank you, Orangeville-Grand Valley-Shelburne libraries), resulting in thosewell-thought-out outlines. Those outlines? All were usually involving murder(the yoga teacher) or fantasy (body-inhabiting personality-altering parasites)or self-help (Finding Your Happy). Not one of those outlines went beyond theoutline phase.
She retired in 2020 and decidedto put words to MS Word and attend (and quickly drop) an online writing course. As mentioned above, loved characters need their stories told. So, the nerd’sand greyhound’s story, complete with swap-o-rama scams, usurping weasels, cycling ladies, a narcissistic ex-husband, international desserts, and a vacuumcleaner species, grew to over 330 pages.
Jo and her retired racinggreyhound, Hillary (the model for ABGTSA’s snooty and condescending Obie), livein the charming century town of Orangeville, Ontario, northwest of Toronto. Shehas the incredible fortune of having a loud, joyful family – sons and sisters,daughters-in-law and brothers-in-law, and nieces and nephews aplenty. Oh yes,and a greyhound that, unlike Obie, has never once accused her ofenormity-of-stupid nor dismissed cycling as a pointless endeavour. In fact,Hillary has kept her own counsel in all conversations and on all observations.Lucky her.
Website:
https://www.jovanhoogmoed.com/What genre do you write?
Women’s humour – target the over-40 crowd.
Do your readingchoices reflect your writing choices?
Yes and no. I enjoy humour, but my tastesvary widely … so fantasy, classical, crime, humour, non-fiction, historical, and the list goes on but does a hard stop at romance – the mass-produced,paperback kinds – they’re just not my thing. Or exceptionally cruel stories …can’t read those. When I read a book, it’s real to me for that moment and ifone (either romance or excessively cruel) slips into my reading list and I findmyself flinging it across the room.
Which types of characters are your favorite to write?
I love characters with senses of humour, that take life as it happens and realize there’s plenty of ridiculousness to alife well lived. And of course, characters have to be a tad flawed, but aregood people nonetheless.
Dopictures, real life or plain imagination create the character you want readersto love?
It’s actually a mixture of the latter two. There’s something wonderful about people, places and things you know and loveand can inject them (or parts of them into a story). ABTSA is almost a tributeto Orangeville (I actually had to dial that down a bit for the final version ofABGTSA) and my wonderful neighbours BUT far enough from actual not to make themuncomfortable.
Do yourcharacters come before or after your plot?
A Both … either a character arises that Iwant to include, then I build a plot line that best suits them and thestory. Or, the plot demands a certain character and I get to create.Either way, it’s wicked fun to juggle plot and character so they link. This isthe benefit of writing for fun; although there are rules, they’re looselyadhered to.
How doyou choose a villain and how do you make them human?
My ABGTSA villian is certainly a villainto the main character, with all the bad behaviour and plain meanness, but inthe end, no one is terrible. People are complex and when placed in weirdsituations they sometimes behave badly but that doesn’t mean they don’t love(or aren’t loved) … they’re just in situations that they can’t handle. I thinkthere’s a trueness about that. Not all bad people are 100% bad, just as not allgood people are 100% good.

A Beginner's Guide to Separation Anxiety
Portia Weaver’s life is … complicated. There’s thatoutrageous swap-o-rama scam her ex-husband, the man she still idolizes, isrunning. Then there’s that imminent end to a career she’s had forever. And,let’s not forget … those despicable dognappers, a cat with murderous intent,to-die-for international desserts, conspiring weasels, cycling ladies, abudding love-interest potter … and, the unexpected arrival of a greyhound whojust happens to talk … human.
AsPortia stumbles through her complications and obligations, the latter dictatedby the dog, both human and canine discover ‘that something’ they’ve alwayswanted but never thought to expect.
For the Buy Link… Right now my book is available onmost e-bookstore platforms (everything from Amazon to B&N, etc.). However,I can add a buy option (and button) to the jovanhoogmoed.com website. Ann Simas launches her newest book Fortune's Cookie

Welcome back to the talented Ann Simas!

Ann Simas lives in Eugene, Oregon, but she is a Colorado girl atheart, having grown up in the Rocky Mountains. An avid word-lover sincechildhood, she penned her first fiction “book” in high school. The author of 42novels, one novella, and one short-story collection, she particularly likes towrite a mix of mystery/thriller/suspense, with a love story and sometimes, paranormal or supernatural elements.
Inaddition to being a three-time Romance Writers of America Golden HeartFinalist, Ann is also an award-winning watercolorist and budding photographerwho enjoys doing needlework in her spare time. She is her family’s“genealogist” and has been blessed with the opportunity to conduct first-handresearch in Italy for both her writing and her family tree. The genealogy researchfrom century’s-old documents, written in Italian, has been a supreme butgratifying and exciting challenge for her.

What would you say are yourstrengths as an author?
Ihave staying power, By that, I mean I have dozens and dozens of book ideasrumbling around in my head. Some are started, others are nothing but a title, and some are a title and a one-liner, or even a paragraph. Fortune’sCookie, to be released on May 19, 2023, fell into that final category. You can preorder the ebook on Amazon, or email me at ann@annsimas.com to order a signedpaperback. If you don’t care if it’s signed, the paperback is also availablefrom Amazon.
Anotherstrength I have is writing good dialogue. What occurs to me is what I write.Afterward, I go over it (and over it), making sure it’s even better. In Fortune’sCookie, the two main characters, Brynn and Rafe, exchange some amusingdialogue, which is always fun to write.
Myfinal strength is that I’ve always been a daydreamer. I know, you’ve neverthought daydreaming could be a strength, but for me, it is. I never know wheremy imagination is going to take me!
How often do you write, and doyou write using a strict routine?
Usually,I write anywhere from five to seven days a week. However, I have a family, andthey come first. My routine isn’t exactly strict, but I try to write at leasttwo chapters a day. If I’m on a roll, it’s more, and if I’m not, it’s less.
Irelease three to four books a year now, so I write as much as I can. I alsocreate my own book covers, which is (usually) fun. Sometimes, however, it canbe aggravating, too, until I get the right mix. I have an editor (Nancy Jankow)who keeps me on the straight and narrow, and my husband, Frank, makes sure allmy mechanical/gun stuff is right.
Five years from now, where doyou see yourself as a writer?
In five years, I hope to have 60 books written. My hope is thatreaders never tire of reading what I’ve written, but let’s face it. I can’t goon writing forever, although if there’s an opportunity to write in theHereafter, I’ll take it!
If you could offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, whatwould it be?
Don’t give up! Writing can bedifficult, and then you wait and wait for a reply from the publishing house, orthe agent, or readers. Don’t know what to do while you’re waiting? If you’reserious about writing, start working on the next book!
Istarted out with Harlequin/Silhouette (The Sugar Cup/AnnieSims), but life got in the way and I wrote only sporadically. After I left mylast job, I decided to write fulltime. By then, indies were a thing, and Amazonhad entered the publishing market, so I decided to try my hand at being anindie author. I haven’t regretted it, though I don’t make as much money, buthey, that’s the way life is! I like being an indie author and I like being myown boss, though sometimes, I wish I didn’t have to do my own marketing.
Whicheverroute you decide to take, whether as an indie or a publishing-house author, remember this: Always give it your best.
What would you consider to bethe best compliment a reader could give your book?
Ilove it when readers tell me they couldn’t put the book down…not to eat, orsleep, or feed their husband or pets. It thrills me when they like thetwisty-turny events in the book. I smile when they comment on the romanticelements of the story. I smile even bigger when they mention the book made themlaugh out loud. I’m blown away when they tell me how many times they’ve read mybooks. I absolutely love my readers!
Whatare you working on now?
Ijust finished Torched to Die (book 9, Grace GabbianoMysteries), which will be released on July 28. These are my best-selling books, followed by Fossil, Colorado Books, and Christmas Valley Romances. I startedanother new series in November 2022 entitled Sugar Plum Creek Holiday Books. They’ll be released throughout the year (not in any specific order), andrevolve around a holiday. Released so far are MerryWitchy Christmas and StupidCupid (the titles always reflect the holiday in the book).
Fortune’sCookie isthe first book in my latest series, The Bly Family. Fortune’sCookie is a rom-com thriller about Brynn and Rafe. Up next is DiaperDude (Derry and Knox, 2024), and after that, SweetTalk (Casey and Gabe, 2025). I haven’t got Mollie’s story figured outyet. I’m also debating writing their mother’s (Egan and Flynn) story, or let itcome naturally through the other books. AllFor Love, a stand-alone romantic thriller, will be released on October20.

Round Robin Blog Fest April 2023 - Breathing Life into Your Characters

Welcome back!
It's been a while since I was able to join in but this month I thought it would be fun. Our topic for the month is: Breathing Life into your Characters.
I've been asked in interviews how I create my characters and make them seem like the man or woman next door. That's the fun part of writing a book!
Sometimes I'll base a character on an image I've seen or a person I know or see in my daily life. Most of the time, they just kind of walk right into a story and take on a life all their own. They become the "voices in my head" while I work on the story. Right up to the point where they take control of the whole shebang!
I don't always go into deep detail about appearances of my characters. Not because I don't know what they look like or don't want anyone else to know, but I find it fun for the reader to picture characters for themselves. I've read books where I've forgotten what the main character looked like and had a complete picture in my head, only to read later that I was WAY off on hair color or physique. Not that it matters. I kept my own image and continued on reading!
Of course, characters are made up of more than physical descriptions. Every character is made up of habits, talents, tempraments and so on. A really strong character is neither all good or all bad. They make mistakes. They say the wrong thing at the wrong time. They do their best, just as we all do.
The trick to breathing life into your characters is putting yourself in their shoes. Ask yourself what you think they would do in certain situations. Not what YOU would do. What THEY would do. How they would move, what they would say, how they would get in and out of a situation--good or bad!
As a writer, one way to learn about characters is by reading books written by authors you admire. Make note of how they treat their characters and describe them. Also how they create depth to their personalities and even to their appearances.
Let's see how the rest of the Round Robin Gang breathes life into their characters!

About JimHepburn

Likemany young men in high school cursed with a dash of creativity, Jim found alove for writing, which everybody else thought was practically useless. Thosefolks urged him to get good at math and science instead, and so he worked atthose, but he was never sure if he could hack them out at a university level. After he graduated said university with an arts degree (where he had to read anawful lot), he wondered what other young people had gone through the samething. It's always been his dream to inspire young men and women to pursue STEMprojects, as he thinks the world could use as many helping hands it can get andhe thinks they are up to the challenge.
Inother news, he grew up near Toronto, Canada and devoured any written adventurehe could find, including many of the works written by Kenneth Oppel, D. J.MacHale, Christopher Paolini, and Rick Riordan. Later on, it was Jim Butcher,R.A. Salvatore, Hajime Isayama, and Tsugumi Ohba who fueled him through hisearly adult years and to whom he associates much of his personal growth to.
