“Gut-wrenching,heartbreaking, and terrifying.” ―Andy Davidson, authorof The Hollow Kind

“As poignant as it is chilling, with a fast-paced, unflinching ending, it’s therichly drawn characters that make Boys in theValley astandout.” ―AlmaKatsu, author of The Fervor and The Hunger

“A riveting, and horrifying, tale of survival set against a punishing and vividbackdrop. Think William Peter Blatty and William Golding blended together…butstill the insights and angles are all Philip Fracassi.” ―Victor LaValle, author of The Ballad of Black Tom

About Philip Fracassi:

Fracassi grew up outside Detroit, MI, but moved away fromhome as a teenager to live in Chicago, where he managed a rock band. By thetime he was of drinking age, he’d decided his future was in the movies, andmoved to Los Angeles where he still resides. While holding every job fromproperty master to locations manager, Fracassi continued to hammer outscreenplays, award winning short story collections and novels.

The result is a blockbuster lineup of chills and thrills:  in addition to Child Alone with Strangers, Fracassi’s Gothic comesfrom Cemetery Dance in February and Boys in the Valley, the firstof a two-book deal from Tor Nightfire and Orbit UK, arrives in July 2023.

Fracassi’s distinct mix ofadrenaline-pumping horror blends pulpy, traditional themes with a distinctlyupmarket voice.   Among other accolades, New York Times reviewer TerrenceRafferty  said  Fracassi “builds his horrific tales slowly andcarefully…his powers of description are formidable; and he’s especiallyskillful at creating, and sustaining, suspense.”

On the thirtieth anniversary of “The War in the Woods,” a new memoir recalls Clayoquot Sound tree faller Bruce Hornidge’s point of view.

On thethirtieth anniversary of  “The War in theWoods,”

a new memoirrecalls events from a Clayoquot Sound tree faller’s point of view

Thirty years after theWar in the Woods in Clayoquot Sound, career tree faller Bruce Hornidge’s memoirof events, Loggerheads, will bepublished on October  17, 2023, byRegina’s, Saskatchewan’s Endless Sky Books. Book-launch events are planned for PortAlberni, Ucluelet, and Nanaimo on Vancouver Island from October 25 to 30.

After more than two decades harvesting inthe beauty of the forest, Hornidge was “loggershamed” as a “tree-killer” andfaced soul-searing losses of identity and livelihood, part of the human falloutof the inevitable move away from a resource-based economy. Loggerheads iswritten from the unique, sometimes humorous, and even irreverent point of viewof one of the many loggers in Ucluelet and Tofino whose forestry careers werecut short on the other side of the demonstrators’ picket lines and governmentand company doublespeak.

“In a three-week window, decades ago, Iproduced the bulk of this book in the form of a paper called ‘The Nightmare.’My goal was a story that is truthful, personal, and encompasses many of theissues in this complex problem,” Hornidge says. “Three decades after The War ofthe Woods, we know what happened, and we’ve been told why. There’s a lot wewere never told.”

Hornidge adds that the logging industryisn’t the only resource-based industry that has been subjected to shaming. “Bysharing my story as an ex-Clayoquot Sound forest worker, I hope to help peopleunderstand the issues surrounding resource-based industries from a broaderperspective than that spun by the media, where those opposed to logging arepainted as the brave biblical David versus the Goliath of us ‘eviltree-killers,’” he said.

Hornidge acknowledges the logging industrywasn’t blameless. “A careless approach was adopted by many as the forestryindustry picked up speed during what was considered an era of largelyunrestricted logging. Some of those true stories can be found in this book’spages.

“For a decade, the issue of forestland usein British Columbia raged like a forest fire. Starting small, it generatedsmoke and mirrors and a world media hype that came to hang like a stalledhurricane over a tiny, beautiful corner of the world known as ClayoquotSound—and the largest act of civil disobedience in Canada to that date. It wasa storm that just wouldn’t quit,” Hornidge writes in the opening pages of Loggerheads. “Inthat brief, tangled era, with my livelihood hanging in the balance, thepressures of life built to such a point that I believed either I’d have amental breakdown or my emotions would break loose and lash out, with realconsequences.”

Raw emotions of distrust and abandonmentwelled up, and, in his distress, Hornidge even toyed briefly with twisted ideasof how he could give the cause its “fifteen minutes of fame” on the worldstage. “Thank goodness cooler heads prevailed.”

Hornidge concludes there is hypocrisyevident in both the anti-resource utilization camp and those in favour ofresource-based industry. “Those who live in wood houses shouldn’t throwstones,” he says with a smile.

Loggerheads received a warm review from Bill Arnott, author of the Gone Viking series and A Season on Vancouver Island. “Parttreatise, part manual, part eco-memoir, Bruce Hornidge’s Loggerheads isa timely, timeless read for lovers of trees. Richly shared in crisp prose, thisbook stands as a sentinel evergreen to the nature and industry our forestsprovide,” Arnott says.

Loggerheads is available from most bookstores, online andoff. It can also be purchased directly from Endless Sky Books at www.endless-sky-books.com or Shadowpaw Press at www.shadowpawpress.com.

Whatwould you say are your strengths as an author?

I have published over 7,000 pieces inmore than 200 international publications and am proud to say that I have neverbeen late! As I have worked as an editor for so many publications, I really getperturbed when one of the writers to whom I assigned a story is late, so I havepromised myself and my colleagues that I would never be that writer. As such, once I set the (unfortunate) deadline of what would have been my latefather’s 80th birthday for the Ivy League book (which was inspired by him inthe first place), I knew this book would be finished! Though I had some issueswith my original publisher that led me to take back my manuscript with just afew months left to go before my self-imposed deadline, I was fortunate enoughto find an amazing illustrator named Jim Roldan (www.jimroldan.com) who totally got what I wasgoing for right away and we were able to finish up the project with about fiveweeks to spare. So I guess one of my greatest strengths is an ability to stayon task and get my assignments done.

As I also have experience in publicrelations and media relations, I have been able to promote my author eventspretty effectively and to be very creative in terms of who I notify about theevents and with whom I plan them. Even though the book is about the Ivy League,I have not only presented it to alumni groups and other school-affiliatedorganizations, but also to library guests, Rotary club members, retail storecustomers, and on my television show, The Writer’s Block (https://www.needhamchannel.org/the-writers-block/),where I also interview and promote other authors, many of whom I Have beenhosting at various venues, including libraries, senior centers, and whereverelse people are interested in learning about various topics and how authorscome to write about them.

My combination of editorial and publicrelations skills helps me not only to combine ideas in new ways and to come upwith potential audiences that others may not think of, but it also helps mewrite my press releases and other outreach materials in a way that, were I toreceive them as a journalist, I would respond, and I think that allows me tohelp my clients in ways that others may not be able to.

Howoften do you write, and do you write using a strict routine?

As a long-time freelancer who has beenworking from home before it was “hip,” I fortunately have enough assignmentsgoing on right now that, even if one has to slow down (for example, whilewaiting for some materials to come in), I can easily flip over to somethingelse. So while I write for a good number of hours every day (sometimes longinto the night after I try to put my daughters to bed), no two days are thesame, and, though I was admittedly not always satisfied with the inconsistenciesof my job (and my life), I really kinda’ like that at this point!

Fiveyears from now, where do you see yourself as a writer?

I recently finished a second versionof a book that I actually started many years before the Ivy League book. It isa semi-autobiographical book about a young boy who has a nervous habit oftapping on everything (potentially due to ADHD). Though many fellow studentsand even some teachers do not understand him, he is able to find a supportivemusic teacher who encourages him to direct his energies into percussion anddrumming. As the boy learns about the different instruments, he also learnsabout the cultures they came from and how Western music has influences from allover the world. I am hoping this book is able to reach not only music fans butalso schoolchildren and teachers and anyone else who wants to support youngpeople like I do as a long-time teacher and tutor because I think that too manymusic classes are being cut and our young people are really losing out as a result. So, by the end of five years, I'm hoping that this book is being widelydistributed and that I am moving on to other successful publishing projects. Ialso hope that the Ivy League book continues to find a larger and largeraudience, especially because it has so many fun facts (what I call “Tr-IVY-a©”)and as it has inspired many students to apply to college and apparently evenhelped some gain admittance!

If youcould offer once piece of advice to a novice writer, what would it be?

I actually offer a presentation aboutthe lessons I learned from writing and publishing the Ivy League book and oneof the biggest lessons that I learned in that process is that you’re going toget a lot of opinions from a lot of people, including some who may have someauthority (such as editors, agents, and publishers), but there has to be a coreto your book that remains true no matter what other people say about it and youhave to be true to that core and your original vision of the story.

What wouldyou consider to be the best compliment a reader could give your book?

My very first review of the Ivy Leaguebook came when my then seven-year-old daughter came up to my home office way pasther bedtime and said, “Daddy I just read your book- It’s good!” I actually usedthat as my first cover blurb when I was promoting the book.

I love hearing from people who tell methat they learned something new from the book- especially if they are going toone of the schools that it is written about.

I also very much appreciate hearingfrom people who knew my father who say that the book is a great tribute to him, because that was the main point.

What are you working on now?

Right now, I am working on thepercussion book and trying to find artists, instrument manufacturers, and musicand education organizations to partner with to get the word out about the bookand hopefully get it wide distribution so I can support as many students andartists as possible. I am also working with some amazing not-for-profit groups, including one called Project Insulin (www.ProjectInsulin.org) that is developing ageneric insulin for people with diabetes who may not be able to afford theversions that are out now. I am also working on a cookbook and outreachmaterials for another group called Wish Dish (www.thewishdishproject.com) that interviewsmembers of homeless communities about the favorite meals that they grew up withand then cooks the meals for the entire community. Speaking of food, I alsopromote independent food makers on WBZ radio in Boston, which is part of theiHeart Radio family. In addition, I have been working with students from allover the world as a writing teacher and tutor, helping them develop their communicativeconfidence and improve their understanding of the mechanics and importance ofwriting. I am also teaching a writing class and an entrepreneurship class at acorrectional institution near my home. I am very happily busy but alwaysavailable to use my education and writing skills to support other people and ifanyone wants to discuss projects or book one of my author events, they canemail me at matt@therobinsonreporter.com.

ABOUT THE BOOK

You may know that HARVARD was the first college in the United States or that PENN is the oldest university. You may even know that the YALE mascot is named Handsome Dan or that BROWN'S first bear was named Helen. Perhaps you are aware that PRINCETON has a battleship and an asteroid named for it or that CORNELL'S colors inspired the design for Campbell's soup. And who can forget that “Animal House” was written by a DARTMOUTH grad and that the atom bomb was developed at COLUMBIA?

But did you know that one of these schools once had a burro for a mascot and another an orange man? Or that students at two of them throw food at sporting events? Do you know where students can request songs to be played on the campus bell tower, which school uses Pantone 290 for its official color, and which has the oldest continuously-published daily student newspaper?

All this and more can be learned in Matt Robinson’s book,
"Lions, Tigers, and…Bulldogs? An unofficial guide to the legends and lore of the Ivy League."
