Reloaded Cover Revealed

Reloaded - Front CoverThe cover for the upcoming Shotgun Honey anthology RELOADED was unveiled this weekend by editor Ron Earl Phillips.

I love the target in the “O” of the title, the color scheme, the artwork, the fonts … everything about that cover.

And I can’t wait to read the book, which is due out Sept. 10. Just take a look at the 25 authors with stories in this anthology (the full list is on the back cover, below) and it’s easy to see why I’m so honored to have a story of my own included.

I’m very pleased to report that my short story “Fortune,” which was originally published in English by Shotgun Honey and appears in Otto Penzler’s KWIK KRIMES anthology, is now available in Spanish:

Release Day for KWIK KRIMES

Kwik KrimesWhen I worked at the Corn Crib (in Christiana, Pennsylvania) and the Gap Diner (in Gap, Pennsylvania) in the late 1980s, I never imagined that being a dishwasher and a short-order cook would lead to me having a story in an anthology edited by Otto Penzler.

But that’s exactly what happened.

Today’s release day for Penzler’s KWIK KRIMES (U.S. Kindle, U.S. paperback, U.K. Kindle, U.K. paperback) — and it includes my story “Fortune,” about two entrepreneurs in the world of recycled cooking oil. (“F...

“Oh Well” – Short Story Trailer

Earlier this week, The Flash Fiction Offensive at Out of the Gutter Online published my story “Oh Well”, about an ambitious politician and set in the Pennsylvania Capitol. Inspired by an email from my wife, I put together this video trailer for the story…

I hope you enjoy the trailer and the story!

The song in the trailer is “Say Hello” by The Throes, from the album Fall On Your World, used with permission. The trailer was created with an iPhone and iMovie.

“Oh Well” at The Flash Fiction Offensive

Senate ChamberSome of my stories have had political elements, but until now only one (“Mess With Me”) has been set in the Pennsylvania State Capitol, where I work. I’m pleased that my second Capitol-based story was published this morning.

“Oh Well” — published by the fine folks at Out of the Gutter Online’s Flash Fiction Offensive — has scenes set in the Capitol Rotunda, the Senate chamber, and a Senator’s office. The Capitol’s a remarkable building, and if you ever get a chance to visit, I highly recommend...

The Decline of Detroit, Documented

Detroit filed for Chapter 9 bankruptcy one week ago today, becoming the largest city in America to do so. In 1950, Detroit’s population was 1,849,568. In 2010, the U.S. Census measured it at 713,777. That’s a mind-boggling drop of more than 1.1 million people (61.4%) over 60 years.

Interesting historical note: Detroit’s population grew even faster than it has declined: in just 20 years, between 1910 and 1930, the population increased by 1.1 million, jumping from 465,766 to 1,568,662.

The loss o...

Four Questions With… Jon McGoran

Drift - Cover

Genetically modified organisms have been in the news a lot lately, including this report from today’s Morning Edition on NPR.

Novelist Jon McGoran knows about GMOs. He’s been writing about food issues, including GMOs, for years as communications director for Weavers Way Co-op, a natural food grocery store in Philadelphia, and editor and publisher of Weavers Way’s monthly newspaper, The Shuttle. Recently, he became editor-in-chief of Grid, a free, monthly print publication focused on sustainabi...

The Ghosts of the Cold Springs Resorts

Coal was discovered in the Stony Creek Valley in northern Lebanon County, Pennsylvania, in 1824. Before long, there were several active towns in the area and by 1851, the Schuylkill & Susquehanna Railroad had completed a rail line through the area. (Some sources say it was the Dauphin & Susquehanna Railroad.)

Around the same time the S&S rail line was built, a 200-room hotel was constructed and the area became a sort of summer resort. By the 1880s, a second hotel was added, according to StonyV...

700 Words or Less

Shotgun Honey LogoI’ll always have a soft spot in my heart for Shotgun Honey. One year ago today, they published my story “12 Before 9″ — the first fiction piece I wrote since 1998. They went on to publish “Fortune” (which has since been picked up by Otto Penzler for inclusion in his upcoming Kwik Krimes anthology), “Twitter and Coke” and “Blow Out the Candles.”

So I’ll be forever grateful to SH’s head honcho Ron Earl Phillips and the editors who approved my stories (even if they did also reject a few).

Now, I’m...
