Fortune Comic Book Now Available

Fortune - CoverFORTUNE, a crime fiction comic book, is now available.

I wrote the script — based on my short story of the same name about two entrepreneurs in the field of recycling used cooking oil — and Dillon Samuelson supplied the incredible art. Click on the cover to see a larger version and get a real taste of Dillon’s artwork.

You can download FORTUNE for free from NoiseTrade.

The NoiseTrade edition includes the complete 12-page comic, four pages of Dillon’s sketches, the comic script, and the original...

Fortune Comic Book: Available Wednesday

Fortune Promo 2Dillon Samuelson and I are releasing our first comic book, FORTUNE, on Wednesday, Sept. 24 – just two days from now!

FORTUNE will be available as a free download on NoiseTrade, and we’re also working on a way to make print copies available.

I posted a preview of Dillon’s primo artwork a couple of days ago, and before that a few comments about FORTUNE from writers I admire.

Here are a few more in that latter category:

“Don’t let the name fool you: FORTUNE ain’t about no million-dollar heist. It’s...

Bouchercon 2014 Author Focus Panel

Bouchercon 2014This year’s Bouchercon — the Annual World Mystery Convention — is taking place in Long Beach, California, November 13 to 16.

If you’ve never been to a Bouchercon, it’s highly recommended. The convention is packed with authors and readers, and it’s an amazing thing to be a part of.

This year, I’m excited to have an Author Focus Panel on Saturday, Nov. 15, at 12 p.m. (that’s high noon) in Harbor Room A. The Author Focus Panels are smaller, more intimate discussions than the larger panels, and the...

Fortune: Art Preview

Next Wednesday (Sept. 24), Dillon Samuelson and I are releasing the comic book FORTUNE.

Jen Conley, an editor at Shotgun Honey and author of stories like “Finn’s Missing Sister” (shortlisted for the Best American Mystery Stories of 2013) and “Hatpin”, said this about the comic:

“Under the cover of darkness, two thieves go after the grease. FORTUNE is a fun, oddball crime story with moody, excellent artwork.”

She’s dead on about Dillon’s art; it’s incredible. Here’s a preview:

Fortune Comic Book: Available 9/24

Fortune Promo 1On September 24, my friend Dillon Samuelson and I are releasing the comic book FORTUNE.

FORTUNE is based on a short story I wrote that first appeared on Shotgun Honey and was later featured in Otto Penzler’s Kwik Krimes anthology, but I have to say the comic book version is my favorite. Dillon’s artwork really captures everything that I visualized while writing the story. He did an amazing job.

But you don’t have to take my word for it. We’ve been very fortunate to have some great writers say v...

“Sugartime” at Akashic Books

Akashic Books LogoAkashic Books loves stories about place. Their amazing NOIR series includes dozens of location-focused anthologies such as DETROIT NOIR, NEW ORLEANS NOIR, and MOSCOW NOIR. (Taking a parochial view of my home state, they’ve published collections set in both Philadelphia and Pittsburgh.)

On their website, Akashic has a series called MONDAYS ARE MURDER, where place is also preeminent.

I couldn’t be more pleased that they chose to publish my story “Sugartime” — set in the City of Brotherly Love — a...
