Show Notes

This podcast is a collaboration between me and Scott Detrow, a reporter with KQED in Sacramento, California. I’m thrilled to be working with him.

The Title 18: Word Crimes podcast, very much inspired by the great work Seth Harwood does with CrimeWAV.com, will feature short crime fiction stories. The first few episodes will feature some of my stories, but we plan...

Looking Back at 2013

I had a lot of fun writing in 2013 and even managed to get five new stories published — plus one previously published story included in an anthology edited by Otto Penzler and another previously published story featured on Seth Harwood‘s terrific CrimeWAV podcast. Many of my stories are now available in Spanish. I also became an editor at the fabulous Shotgun Honey website.

Definitely a good year.

The new stories were published by Out of the Gutter Online‘s Flash Fiction Offensive (two), BEAT t...

Kwik Krimes Audio Edition

Kwik Krimes Audiobook

The audio version of Otto Penzler’s KWIK KRIMES anthology is now available. This book, which includes my story “Fortune,” contains a whopping 81 stories — each written in fewer than 1,000 words.

There are many gems in KWIK KRIMES, including stories by masters like Reed Farrel Coleman, James Grady, Patti Abbott and Joe R. Lansdale.

The audiobook is read by Phil Gigante, whose voice can be found on dozens upon dozens of audiobooks (more than 200, according to one source). He’s perfect for the job...

“Just One Moment” in Spanish

My short story “Just One Moment” is now available in Spanish:

Solo Un Momento

“Just One Moment” is set in Philadelphia. It opens with a romantic dinner at a fine restaurant in the City of Brotherly Love, but things quickly start to go wrong. It was originally published in English by BEAT to a PULP in February 2013.

My thanks to translator Carolina Maria Russo-Holding, who has done a great job translating a number of my stories. More Spanish translations are available here.

How to Write Effective Reports

Going to thrift stores is terrific fun because you never know what you’ll find. Recently, I stumbled across what is, in my experience, a unique how-to book: How to Write Effective Reports.

I know, I know… the title alone sells the book. No doubt.

But what makes How to Write Effective Reports unique — and, I suggest, brilliant — is the method it uses to teach the reader how to write effective reports. It’s like a Choose Your Own Adventure book for report writing.

See? Brilliant.

Here, without furt...

“Mess With Me” on CrimeWAV

Seth Harwood’s CrimeWAV podcast is, hands down, my favorite crime fiction podcast. It consistently features great stories by great writers.

Today, I’m out of my mind thrilled (yo!) to have one of my stories appear on CrimeWAV: “Mess With Me” is featured on the November edition of the podcast.

“Mess With Me” is a story about congressional redistricting, at least superficially. It’s really more about a conversation that goes horribly wrong… It was first published by NEEDLE: A Magazine of Noir.

I w...

Looking Forward to Federales

FederalesIt won’t be out until March 2014, but I’m looking forward to FEDERALES, the debut novella by Christopher Irvin — and the debut of One Eye Press’s “Singles” line of novellas.

Chris is one of my fellow editors at Shotgun Honey, and a terrific writer. Here’s an early look at what you’ll get when you read FEDERALES:

Mexican Federal Agent Marcos Camarena dedicated his life to the job. But in a country where white knights die meaningless deaths, martyred in a hole with fifty other headless bodies in...

Farewell, John Munch

I loved Homicide: Life on the Streets. What a fantastic show. One of the best characters was Detective John Munch, portrayed by Richard Belzer.

When Homicide ended, John Munch moved to New York and joined Law & Order: SVU. On Wednesday night, his run there came to an end. I love the final scene.

John Munch

Thank you, Richard Belzer, for 21 years of John Munch.

“For the Honesty” in Spanish

My short story “For the Honesty” (a personal favorite) is now available in Spanish:

Por La Honestidad

“For the Honesty” examines what was once a loving relationship between Bruce and Amber Burton. It was originally published in English by Out of the Gutter Online’s Flash Fiction Offensive in January 2013.

My thanks to translator Carolina Maria Russo-Holding. Spanish translations of some of my other stories are available here.

“Swing and a Miss” in Spanish

In honor of the baseball playoffs (go Bucs!), my short story “Swing and a Miss” is now available in Spanish:

Girar y Perder

“Swing and a Miss” is about bad couple of minutes in a convenience store. It was originally published in English by Near to the Knuckle last year.

My thanks to translator Carolina Maria Russo-Holding. Spanish translations of some of my other stories are available here.
