“Are You a Romans 7 or a Romans 8 Christian?”: A Biblical Response to an Erroneous Question

Today’s blogpost is by a friend in the body of Christ from the USA. Joshua Nelson is an online writer who works from his home in Springfield, Missouri, USA, where he lives with his wife and one year old son. He is a graduate of Maranatha Baptist University located in Watertown, Wisconsin and of First Christian High School of Genoa, Illinois. He presently attends Sovereign Grace Baptist Church of Springfield, Missouri, and has been a believer in Jesus Christ since conversion at age 12. Joshua...

New to fatherhood

My little girl, Thandiwe is almost one year old. Her birthday is on the 14th of July. One key thing she has taught me in these few months is that quality time to children must be supported by quantity time and vice versa. It seems not to matter much to Thandie if I spend a relaxing evening with her in my arms if it only lasts 5 minutes. Similarly, an hour with her in my arms while I am working on my laptop doesn’t cut it either. She wants face time- and face time that lasts. Even placing her...

Of weak women and manipulators

Long post alert: 2600 words

12 minutes of reading

In my time ministering to people in the area of man-woman relationships, I have seen the same kinds of problems manifest in different people. Their stories may be different, their examples may be different but their problems are often the same. One particular problem that we often encounter is that of weak women. It’s not to cause offence. I use the term weak because I could find no other befitting definition other than that which the Apostle...

Saving relationships one man at a time!

A few weeks ago after preaching to a couple of teenagers and young adults, a number of youth walked up to me and asked to see me in private. One of them confessed that he had been struggling with a porn addiction. He had been invited to a birthday party at a friend’s hostel. When he got there, he found several young men crammed in the tiny hostel. There was no cake, no food and no birthday celebration. The owner of the hostel shut the curtains and switched on his television and DVD player. He...

The root of bitterness

Have you ever had bitterness rule your heart? A few years ago, I battled with entrenched bitterness towards a brother in the faith. We disagreed fundamentally on a biblical doctrinal issue. It wasn’t my first time to share divergent views with anyone in the faith. However I had no idea that this particular one would sting so badly.

We were in one fortnight Bible Study that I had started about four years ago, and we had a Whatsapp group. Since we hailed from different backgrounds, we held cert...

From the pit to the palace

How did Joseph, son of Isaac, manage to mitigate a global-level famine catastrophe and save the lives of hundreds of thousands of people (if not millions)? He had no degree or Masters in Resource Management. He was not privy to agricultural silo technology. Yet he managed to avert the consequences of a seven-year famine. If you read through the story of Joseph, you will find the answer to be quite simple; he was faithful with little. Joseph, the great Egyptian hero was also Joseph the little...

The Nails of Salvation

The two thieves on the cross teach us a compelling message on God’s salvation. The thief that mocked Jesus only believes in a salvation that involves him getting out of the current pain he is facing. And when Jesus does not do that, he insults him and is almost vividly upset that he is still on the cross.  Many people approach Jesus like this. They come with demands and conditions. “If you really are God, save my relationship/save my finances/stop them from hurting me.” Yet Jesus on the cross...

The Dangers of Christian Ministry

Serving in God’s harvest field is a great thing. He has apportioned gifts to his church to prepare for his coming Kingdom. However, as we do so, we must be cognizant of lurking dangers. These are some of the dangers of Christian ministry. As you read through them, do some self-auditing.

Danger One: Participating in ministry but not walking with God.

In Matthew 7:21-23, Jesus describes a future scene on Judgement day. Jesus says:

“Not everyone who says to Me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingd...
