Haley Whitehall - Interracial Historical Romance

Interracial romance is a budding genre. Despite having a hero and heroine from different races, the story elements are the same as in any romance. The reason I believe interracial romance is still young is because sadly it has taken so long to become acceptable. Interracial marriages didn’t become legal until 1967 and sadly enough the last state that held on till 2000 was Alabama.
I write historical romance which means when I have an interracial couple it throws another monkey wrench in the works. I’m not saying there wouldn’t be difficulties in a contemporary interracial romance, but in a historical it is even scandalous. I write historicals set during the Civil War era. Race was a hot button issue then—just think about the roots of the war. Setting my interracial couple anywhere from the Antebellum era to Reconstruction really ups the tension and I have to walk a tightrope between being historical accurate and respectful.
I’m happy to see that I am not the only author rising to take the challenge. Recently I discovered historical Native American interracial romance written by Sharon Ihle. If you haven’t checked out her books I highly recommend them. I look forward to reading new historical interracial romances as more authors enter the genre.
Blurb:Unjustly accused of stealing, nanny April Windmire is turned out on the streets without pay. With no place to go and no friends, she stows away on a Mississippi River steamboat. Her hopes to hide through the journey to St. Louis are dashed when a handsome white officer finds her. But instead of turning her in, he takes her to his private quarters where she fights her growing attraction to a man she cannot have.

Matt Seever’s wife died four year ago, leaving him alone with two small mulatto children. But his job as an officer on the Queen Bee isn’t family friendly. He knows he needs a new wife, but no southern white woman will marry him. When April lands in his lap, his prayers are answered. Or are they? April’s not the trusting type and racial prejudice runs deep in post-Civil War Missouri. Just when Matt convinces April he loves her, his new family becomes a target and there’s no backing down from this fight.

Together, April and Matt must brave heinous race prejudice crimes to find an enduring love.
Excerpt:Matt approached April slowly, wondering if she was going to avoid him. She didn’t. He reached out and gently wrapped his hands around both of her arms, keeping space between them.
“Ever since I met you I’ve felt like you were trying to find fault with me.”
She didn’t respond, her lips curled in.
“I know I’m not perfect. No man is, but why are you always thinking the worst?”
“I don’t know,” she said in a shaky voice.
That was a damn lie, but he did not call her on it. She hadn’t told him a single thing about her past other than a bit about her previous jobs. Not one word about her personal life. Something had caused her to be this suspicious.
The tension between them was too strong to ignore. Even holding her at a distance stirred feelings inside him.
“Stop trying to push me away, April. It isn’t going to work. I live here. You live here. It is only natural…” He pulled her toward him until her chest was pressed against his. “…we have feelings for each other.”
Without giving her time to react he pressed his lips against hers. Fire blazed where they touched. Blood rushed to his cock and he feared she’d feel it pressed against her.

Flynn's Kiss - New Release

Severely scarred during a disastrous mission, ex special forces Flynn Swann is home after three years of avoidance. By his own admission, he’s no good with women and the last thing he expects or wants is the attention of a curvy little brunette, who’s just passing through.

With apparently no fear or revulsion of his scarred face, the boisterous woman bounds into his life and destroys all hope of a quiet visit. It is obvious to literally everyone that she wants him—all of him.
Worse still, despite her atrocious taste in fashion and Stetsons, she appears to have won the hearts of the entire town.

Scientist Liberty Sophia Glennon is on a mission to find a man before she has to return to the loneliness of the New Zealand outback where she has already spent eighteen lonely months doing research.

A ticking hormone bomb, Liberty feels time is running away with her. Outwardly she is a bouncing ball of over-confidence, but inside she is still a frightened little girl with horrific memories of her childhood and a desperate need to be liked.

Completely unfazed by his external scars, her seduction of Flynn is not so difficult, but follow-through proves painful as Liberty realises Flynn’s wounds run further than just skin deep.

With apparently nothing in common but their passionate attraction, how will these two damaged souls deal with each other’s fear of rejection?

Excerpt

“Flynn.” She spoke softly, but in the quiet of the early evening, her voice carried clearly, emphasizing the slight wobble to betray her nervousness.
He turned his head and stared at her, his eyes direct and piercing, his chin lowered in what she recognized as a defensive gesture, designed to deter her advance. The dappled light from the fading sun gave his beautiful face an ethereal and almost sinister look, emphasized by his complete stillness, his silent watchfulness.
She took a hesitant step forward and stopped at the slightest movement of his chin raising. She wished she hadn’t come, wanted to run, but she’d trapped herself, and in all honesty, she hadn’t quite expected this response. They were both adults, for heaven’s sake, and one of them should take the initiative and make their meeting less uncomfortable.
She removed the Stetson from her head, no longer in peril of burning her skin as the sun lowered. His gaze flicked down to the pretty yellow hat as a few more of its feathers detached themselves and fluttered to the ground. His wicked eyebrow flicked up briefly, and then his expression returned to deadpan.
“I owe you an apology.”
Silence filled the gap until she huffed out a breath and tried again.
“You’ve been conspicuous by your absence lately. People are missing you and I feel…responsible.” Embarrassment coursed through her. She had no idea she would have to try so hard to reach him. Convinced she simply needed to see him again for everything to be all right, it came as a debasing shock to realize he had indeed been avoiding her.
She tried to keep her hands still, but her fingers seemed to have a mind of their own, twisting around the brim of her new hat. She saw his gaze flick down to stare at them and forced herself to drop them back down to her sides, holding her hat in one hand, aware of the shedding of yet more bright feathers. His attention centered on her again as she gave a small cough.
“The other night, when we…” She blew out a disgusted breath at her painful reticence. She was supposed to be the mature one here. “…when we had sex. I thought it was mutual. I know I took the lead and did all the seducing, but maybe I didn’t take into consideration you weren’t interested—you seemed interested at the time, you…” She swallowed a heavy lump in her throat. He’d been as hard as rock, but maybe he’d fantasized about someone else.

Short ExcerptKicking off her white sandals, she descended a set of wooden stairs and stepped onto the sand. It squished between her toes, damp and still warm from the heat of the afternoon. The moon shone over the water, gleaming in the waves pulling toward the shore. She stood at the water’s edge. The current sucked at her toes, burying them in sand, and she absorbed the soothing sounds of nature. She tipped her head back and closed her eyes. Perfect. For a moment, she flashed back to her childhood. Not the endless summers she’d spent with the Randolphs. Earlier than that, long before her father’s death. A memory floated out of her grasp, on the edges of her subconscious but always moving away from her.The water surrounded her ankles, the tendrils of the tide resembling a caress. As if someone touched her.She opened her eyes, startled by the sensation. A particularly large wave crashed around her legs. Thrown off-balance by the unexpected surge, she stumbled a bit until she regained her footing. Whatever memory she’d been chasing fled, replaced by the shock of the water splashing against her knees. She returned her attention to the water. It eddied around her, the glow of the moonlight reflected in the tiny swirls of liquid. Bending down, she touched the surface and a jolt of energy poured through her. She lurched backward just as another wave crashed against her.Weird.She moved closer to the shore, not afraid of the ocean but concerned by her reaction to it. Something wasn’t right. The cry of a seagull jerked her back to the present. She glanced down and grimaced at the soaked bottom half of her dress. She didn’t mind as much as she should. At least the delightfully cool water eased some of the oppressive heat of the day. The breeze, which had been strong all day, caressed her bare shoulders and ruffled her hair. She lifted her arms and twirled, letting out a tiny sound of pleasure. At the end of her twirl, she caught sight of a figure standing alone on the patio. The moonlight wasn’t needed for her to recognize Drake. No one else had such a commanding presence. He tugged at her heart like the ocean’s current tugged at her ankles.

Soldier in Her Lap - Haley Whitehall - A character interview

Hi Haley and welcome.
I’m really pleased you have brought Sophia with you. Pull up a chair, grab a coffee and please excuse me while I ask Sophia some questions.
Hi Sophia, it’s lovely to meet you. Hi Diane. It is a pleasure to be here. I do enjoy visiting.
Can you tell me how you first felt when you met Lucas? To tell you the truth I was terrified. This strange man was bleeding on my front porch. He had passed out, and when I bent down to see if he was still alive I noticed he was one handsome soldier.
Did you hide him?I had to take care of his wound. Yes, I hid him until he was strong enough to take care of himself.
What was the very first thing that attracted you to him?I was mesmerized by his eyes. He has the darkest green eyes I had ever seen.
I bet you sang to him while he was recovering – what is your favourite tune?Call me patriotic but I often sang “God Save the South.”
Describe your first kiss.Oh my. Well, it was a chaste kiss. Our lips brushed and my cheeks burned. I kept my eyes open and saw the lust in his gaze. It made me giddy knowing he wanted me as bad as I wanted him.
Okay, take a few breaths to calm down, and then tell me what Lucas looks like. His six feet of lean muscle with green eyes and a charming smile and short wheat colored hair.
What is his best feature? His thoughtfulness. He always puts me first and does everything he can to take care of me.
What would he say is your strongest feature? My inner strength. I had to endure a lot growing up and it only got worse during the war when food and other goods were hard to get.
What does he love about you the most?He has often told me he likes the fact I’m practical. I do what needs to get done whether it is setting a rabbit snare or cleaning the house. I always thought most men went for the shy wallflowers who didn’t do much outside of the home. Not my Lucas.
Describe the house you would love to own.A two-story whitewashed ranch house with lots of room for children.
Well, thank you so much Sophia. You can sit back and relax now while we show everyone your Haley's new cover - which incidentally is beautiful.

And here's a little about the story.
Blurb:
Trapped by her alcoholic, abusive father, Sophia Carpenter longs to escape her life of drudgery on her father’s dirt farm in Clark Springs, Georgia. Making matters worse, her father’s scared off every man who tried to call on her. She longs for freedom, but with the Civil War raging, even fewer men are available to fulfill her dreams—unless a soldier landed in her lap.
Conscripted into a war he never wanted to fight, Lucas Grady is tired of battle and refuses to lay his life down for a lost cause. After a musket ball tears through his leg, he deserts from the ambulance wagon rather than risk a field surgeon’s saw. He barely makes it to Sophia’s farm before collapsing.
The wounded soldier’s arrival seems like a dream come true, but first she must save him from his injuries—and her father. As forbidden attraction blooms between them, they will have to struggle to survive. Can their love overcome so many obstacles or will they become another casualty of the War Between the States?

FOOD FOR LOVE - BLOG HOP

The way I was brought up, food was a really important part of our socialising. It was never about how much food ... but good food and great company. Family meals when I was younger were so often the times when we all re-discovered each other after our wild and hectic days. As an adult, I now realise this is the time when you discover exactly what your children have been up to!
Our house at meal times is never a closed shop. People come – often unexpectedly – and stay to eat and talk. This part definitely comes from my parents. I remember my father’s Royal Air Force days when the boys on camp used to call him “dad”. Christmas Day, when the youngest of the crews – eighteen years old – couldn’t fly home to England, my dad would turn up with four, five, six of them for my mum to feed. It never phased her, she always had enough to go around.
My books often have mealtimes, because it’s a time of discovery.

Leave a comment and I'll give one lucky person a copy of my new release.
Here’s a small ‘taster’ of Flynn’s Kiss :

Excerpt
Flynn picked up the beer Liberty had brought him and took a long draft, scanning the length and breadth of the table as everyone settled and started to pass food.
Surprised at his nerve, Flynn watched as his nephew squeezed a small stool in between Liberty’s chair and Michael’s, stretched his long skinny legs one at a time, and hopped over it to sit shoulder-to-shoulder with Liberty. Blushing furiously, Jacob gave Flynn a furtive glance from under his eyelashes and a wicked grin. With an unfamiliar stab of possessiveness, Flynn envisaged grabbing the kid by the ear and stuffing him under the table. Then he considered it might be to his advantage to keep him there and save him from having to do any talking. Not that he supposed he needed to do any with Liberty in full chat mode on one side of him and his cousin Sam, quiet and calm, on the other side.
As he took his own seat, his gaze swept around the table and caught Ethan’s steady contemplation. Perhaps the deputy sheriff was right, maybe she could rock his world. Problem was, he wasn’t sure if he was ready to have his world rocked.
Flynn frowned down at his empty plate and squinted over at the kid’s. Five pieces of fried chicken, a mountain of mashed potatoes, a ton of corn bread, and a pile of green shit. He wasn’t bothered about the green shit, but he could smell the chicken and potatoes, and his stomach gave a loud complaining growl.
The sound grabbed Liberty’s attention, her eyes widened as she glanced from his plate to hers to Jacob’s. A bright smile spread across her face once more, showing dimples he hadn’t yet had the time to study. She swapped her filled plate with his empty one, and as he opened his mouth to protest, she gave a small shake of her head and placed her delicate hand on top of his to stop him from swapping them back.

Her cool fingers sent electric pulses straight up his arm to spread like wildfire through his entire body, and he wondered if anyone would notice if he snatched the little woman away and took her back to his lodge. His stomach rumbled again, but he thought he could stave off hunger pangs if only he could get Liberty naked. He raised his head, met Sam’s quietly amused stare, and figured his thoughts might just have been a little too evident.

Flynn's Kiss

Flynn's Kiss is due for release by Taliesin Publishing on 3rd April 2014. The first in a series of Disarmed & Dangerous books, Flynn character is dark and edgy. A man with a tortured soul.

I'm too thrilled for words with my art cover because it really depicts my characters.

Call in during the next couple of days for blurb and excerpts, plus a little competition.

Perfect Ride by Shiloh Saddler and Eva Lefoy

If you like cowboys, bull riding and the excitement of the PBR, you’ll find Cole and Garrett’s story never has a dull moment. It’s full of surprises, and just like bull riding, the story is laced with blood, sweat, joy and tears.
Today I’m doing a character interview with Cole Richards. But fist, a little more about the story.
Blurb:
Professional bull rider Garrett Anderson lives for the next town, the next trophy and his next ride. When he rolls into Sheridan, Wyoming, the last thing he expected was to meet a cowboy like Cole—a man who corrals his heart and leaves him aching for the kind of love he’s been missing.
A bull tender on the PBR circuit Cole Richards secretly longs for a lover but wasn’t prepared for Garrett’s passion or the longing their one brief tryst kindles. After he is shot and recovering in his hospital bed, Cole can only watch Garrett’s disastrous ride afraid it could be his last. Heartbroken when the battered and bruised bull rider leaves town, Cole knows better than to hope to see him again.
Attacked again and knee-deep in trouble, Cole wants only Garrett at his side. But can his bull rider trade fame and fortune for a lifetime with his one perfect ride?

Character Interview: Cole Richards
How old are you and how old when you first start working with bulls?
I’m twenty six and I started working with bulls at age four. My dad’s a bull breeder and we own Richards Ranch. Spitfire is one of our bulls.
How did you come to be on the PBR?
Well when I hit puberty I found out pretty quickly I wasn’t straight. I started fooling around with guys and my dad caught me a couple times. He and I didn’t see eye to eye on my sexuality. I left home and worked the circuit as soon as I graduated high school. It was the only way to keep from killing other.
Is it easier to be gay on the PBR circuit?
Not really. At least at home I could hang out with people I wanted to, but when you’re on the road all the time it like’s a crapshoot. Every new town could bring you a good encounter or a bad one. And there’s sure no time for a relationship. You’re always on the move, and there’s no guarantee you’ll be heading back to the same town two tours in a row.
What about those bulls riders though? They’re pretty hot, right?
Yeah, there’s a lot of eye candy in the pens but most of ‘em are straight. A lot are married, some have families and a few are very religious. I don’t mess around with any of them to be honest.
Then it must have been a shocker to meet Garrett Anderson?
And find out he’s gay? Hell yes. I had no idea the man was gay. Sure I’d heard rumors but everybody tells lies to try and discredit their competition. So I basically ignored them. Finally though Garrett and myself and Spitfire ended up on the same town and when we met it was obvious there was something going on between us.
You had a one night stand?
Yeah. That’s pretty much all I was hoping for though. I’m not dumb. I’ve seen what fame and fortune do to a man. I never expected Garrett to come back, never thought I’d see him again.
But he did and now you’re together.
Him quitting the circuit was like the biggest surprise I’ve ever had in my life.
And the happiest?
I can definitely say it was the happiest day of my life. But it was also the saddest. If you read the book you’ll understand. Everything in my life changed that day. Well, after getting shot. One of these days I’m gonna get that stupid clown….
By the way, Shiloh and I are currently editing book II, which is young bull rider Freddy’s story. Look for it later this year!
Thanks for reading,
Eva
