ATLANTIC DIVIDE SERIES - FIVE STARS ALL AROUND

One of the biggest thrills I ever have is seeing a genuine 5* review for one of my books. So when I saw the same reader on Goodreads, having read all three of my Atlantic Divide Series gave them a great review and 5* each, I was delighted.

Here's a little snippet:

"The reality of a series is not only do you have to write a good (first) book with interesting characters that your readers will enjoy interacting with, you have to surround these characters with a supporting cast that also interest the reader. This is essential for any series to survive because the reader has to want to be drawn back into the world that the author has created. The reader has to want to go back and interact with the characters again and again and watch and learn as the supporting characters in one book are brought to the forefront in another book and given a chance to find their HEA. If a reader isn't drawn deeply into the world the author creates, if the reader doesn't care about the characters the author creates then no matter how many books an author writes or how much they promote or discount their books no one will be interested. In my opinion, Diane Saxon is a master of the series!"

Book Boyfriend Blog Hop...and the winner is...

Congratulations to Cathy Brockman, winner of Flynn's Kiss for commenting on the Book Boyfriend Blog Hop.

Blurb Severely scarred during a disastrous mission, ex special forces Flynn Swann is home after three years of avoidance. By his own admission, he’s no good with women and the last thing he expects or wants is the attention of a curvy little brunette, who’s just passing through.
With apparently no fear or revulsion of his scarred face, the boisterous woman bounds into his life and destroys all hope of a quiet visit. It is obvious to literally everyone that she wants him—all of him.
Worse still, despite her atrocious taste in fashion and Stetsons, she appears to have won the hearts of the entire town.
Scientist Liberty Sophia Glennon is on a mission to find a man before she has to return to the loneliness of the New Zealand outback where she has already spent eighteen lonely months doing research.
A ticking hormone bomb, Liberty feels time is running away with her. Outwardly she is a bouncing ball of over-confidence, but inside she is still a frightened little girl with horrific memories of her childhood and a desperate need to be liked.
Completely unfazed by his external scars, her seduction of Flynn is not so difficult, but follow-through proves painful as Liberty realizes Flynn’s wounds run further than just skin deep. With apparently nothing in common but their passionate attraction, how will these two damaged souls deal with each other’s fear of rejection?
Excerpt
He was pretty sure the sun was affecting his brain as he took a few swift gulps of water and readjusted himself as the thought of Liberty made him harden and swell, making him pretty uncomfortable in the armchair of a saddle.
Sunlight burned the back of his retinas, so after four hours of riding, he could have sworn blind he was hallucinating when those scorched-out eyes focused on a spot of bright, glowing white almost on the horizon. A little beacon.
He strained his vision in the vain hope he might be wrong, but as he approached, he knew fucking well it was the bouncy brunette with another goddamn awful excuse for a hat perched upon her head. Some ignorant bastard had taken a perfectly good Stetson and colored it up white. Stark white.
Fuck.
The yellow one with the dead bird wrapped around it had been an obscenity and had been quickly squashed. It wasn’t deliberate, and he still had the pretty little feathers in the breast pocket of his shirt for some reason beyond his own comprehension. But this hat was even worse.
He scanned her campsite as he advanced on her. She seemed to have managed to unsaddle the horse and unload the pack pony and was seated on a deep pink blanket on the ground, leaning comfortably with her back up against the saddle.

Fuck.

BOOK BOYFRIEND BLOG HOP

I’ve always been a really prolific reader and although English, I read copious amounts of U.S. authors. I don’t know why I enjoy them so much, but I do. From thrillers to romance to fantasy I really love reading them.
One of my first discoveries, now many years ago, was Nora Roberts. I loved the way she wrote – I still do. She can haul me in and make me visualise her characters to such an extent that they stay with me. My favourite of all her characters still is the first book of hers I read with my Book Boyfriend – Cameron Quinn. For a start, what a name. Already my heart starts to beat a little faster. Then give the man a bad boy reputation and I’m hooked. A car racer no less. Yummy.
Rip him away from his life of luxury, stick this poor little rich playboy in the backwater he grew up in and give him a ten year old to raise. Then slide the shutters open a little bit at a time, because with a book boyfriend, they can’t just be bad. Nope. Bad is the initial appeal, but if they aren’t filled with compassion and hidden depths, then they’re no boyfriend of mine.
Every heartstring I have pulls and I can still pick up the Chesapeake series of books. Each one of those heroes grabbed me, but let’s face it I’d rather be grabbed by Cameron Quinn, in the flesh.

Flynn's Kiss - Another Great Review

Title:  Flynn's Kiss (Disarmed and Dangerous, Book 1)Genre: ContemporaryAuthor: Diane SaxonReviewer: JoReviewer Email: jo@romancejunkies.comPublisher: Taliesin Publishing LLCISBN: 9781629160368Release Date: April 1,  2014Author Website: http://www.dianesaxon.com/Author Email: diane@saxonpark.co.ukFormat: EBOOKRating: 4.5 blue ribbons
FLYNN'S KISS is a contemporary romance from an author that manages to engage all my senses and emotions as I read.  The characters are so very real that I can feel their emotions and sympathize and empathize as needed.  Flynn, a true alpha male, has a hard time showing his feelings especially with the trauma he faced as a Special Forces operative.  Liberty is not at all what she seems when she's first introduced.  Watching them help each other heal was heartwarming as they each slowly let us see who they each are and what has shaped their lives.Saxon's FLYNN'S KISS has many undercurrents to the storyline.  The epilogue set the stage and I was reunited with many of the characters we met in the ATLANTIC DIVIDE SERIES which was the icing on the cake and very unexpected even though you did not have to read that series since enough information was given to keep you in the storyline.  Flynn and Liberty had immediate chemistry even though it was across the way in a crowded bar but watch out when they finally do come face to face.  Neither is what the other one expects but the pull is there and we slowly get to know each of them even through their wariness of each other and their numerous flights in the opposite direction.  Catching up with Kate and Jack, Bill, Sam and Lydia amongst others made it an even more enjoyable read.  Buddy was a character that deserves what he gets. There were family and friends along with sadness, happiness, laughter, tears, romance and love. There was a happily ever after but much more story to tell.  An epilogue or a few more chapters would have wrapped it up nicely and I can only hope that we will get the closure I'm looking for once the next book in the series is out. This book did not disappoint and I'm looking forward to reading future books in the series as well as future books by Saxon.
SNIPPET— FLYNN'S KISS is book one in the DISARMED AND DANGEROUS SERIES and is connected to the three books the author wrote in the ATLANTIC DIVIDE SERIES which I loved.  There is the sexy edginess along with real people with feelings and emotions that grab you in immediately and steamy scenes that set the ground on fire!

Guest Post - Betty Bolté - Traces

Traces: Then and Now
My first novel, Traces, began its life as a graduate thesis. The focus of the thesis was on what techniques and tropes the masters of supernatural storytelling employed. The first half of the paper provided my analysis and the second half the first three chapters of the story, also called Traces.             It’s important to note, however, that the story itself morphed over the ensuing years as I learned more about the craft of writing and storytelling. The only continuity between the thesis and the book centers on three elements: the main character, Meredith; the house as a character; and a nod to classic supernatural authors Edgar Allan Poe and Henry James.            Meredith Reed is a smart, loving woman who knows what she wants and how to get it. That’s true whether she was married and had children (in the thesis version) or was a widow trying to bury her grief over losing her husband and child (in the book).            Originally, the house was situated in the outskirts of Huntsville, Alabama, and needed lots of repairs. When I rewrote the story, I chose to locate the story in a fictional county and town in south central Tennessee, and made it an historic plantation home. Both had ghosts involved, though different ones. (I do love ghost stories!)            Elements of Poe’s and James’ tales were woven into the original: a person buried alive in a basement; tarnished silver doorknobs; a wolf-like dog. In Traces, I’ve retained a person buried alive, though that event happens in the past. And I’ve kept the tarnished doorknobs.             I love being able to take factual information and weave it into fiction. Even in Traces, I’ve tried to weave historical facts into the storyline, to deepen the narrative resonance. That’s probably why I also write historical romance, to spotlight life in distant times.
Thanks for letting me share some of the background of my debut, Traces! What do you love about paranormal romances and ghost stories?

Mini-BlurbArchitect Meredith Reed aims to demolish her family plantation to bury her grief. But her conniving sister, a hunky lawyer, and a spectral Lady all have other ideas. Can she carry out her plan before they teach her the lessons of family and love she so desperately needs?
BlurbMeredith Reed, a forty-year-old architect turned demolition expert, desperately searches for the means to bury her grief. When she inherits her family’s historic plantation home in Tennessee, she decides to start anew by razing the antebellum house and replacing it with a memorial garden.  A plan met with outrage from her family and her grandmother's estate lawyer.
James Maximillian “Max” Chandler needs two things to complete his life plan: become a senior partner and find his soul mate. He's been promised a promotion once his proposed legislation to protect all of the county’s historic properties is approved. The wife part he finds more challenging, having never met the right woman in all of his forty-six years. If only the talented and attractive Meredith weren’t so aloof toward him and didn’t want to destroy the very property he’s grown to cherish.
Meanwhile, Meredith's estranged sister moves in and refuses to leave. The memories of their childhood spent there causes turmoil between them. And while Meredith struggles to reconcile her past and her future, she learns a lesson from the spectral Lady in Blue that may save both her family and the family home from destruction.

Can Luke conquer his past and claim the only woman he’s ever loved?
Blurb:Magic didn’t just find Luke Caulfield. It chased him down, bludgeoned him, and has been dogging him ever since. Some lessons are harder than others. Luke survives by embracing danger and upping the ante to give it one better. An enforcer for the Coven, a large, established group of witches, his latest assignment is playing bodyguard to the daughter of Coven leaders.   Abigail Ruskin is chaperoning a spoiled twelve-year-old from New York to her parents’ home in Utah Territory when Luke gets on their stagecoach in Colorado. A powerful witch herself, Abigail senses Luke’s magic, but he’s so overwhelmingly male, she shies away from contact. Stuck between the petulant child and Luke’s raw sexual energy, Abigail can’t wait for the trip to end.
Wraiths, wolves, and humans with dark magick attack. Unpleasant truths surface about the child and Abigail’s well-ordered world crashes around her. Luke’s so attracted to Abigail, she’s almost all he can think about, but he’s leery too. In over his head, he summons enforcer backup. Will they help him save the woman he’s falling in love with, or demand her immediate execution?

Excerpt: …It wasn’t Luke but a long, drawn-out shriek that brought Abigail thumping back to consciousness, her heart hammering triple time in her chest. Eyes wide and staring against the darkness, she warded herself just in time. Strong magic battered her. She tried to sense Luke, but that was the problem with wards. They protected by forming an impenetrable barrier and corralled her magic inside.Whatever was pummeling her seemed to have given up. She risked chinking enough of a hole in her warding to send a tendril of magic outward because she needed information. When it came, it terrified her so badly, her heart stuttered. Dark things surrounded them: wraiths, mad wolves—those who’d been turned to serve the other side—and humans who’d sold their immortal souls for forbidden knowledge. Had the girl rallied them? How could she possibly be that powerful? Luke didn’t seem to be anywhere. Abigail hoped he’d concealed himself out of harm’s way, because the two of them couldn’t make the slightest dent in the dark horde outside. The stagecoach rocked and she realized someone was climbing onto the roof. Throat so dry she could barely breathe, she mended her warding. The books. That’s what they want… Let them haul the miserable things out of here. She knew she should risk heaven and hell to keep such knowledge out of dark hands, but Abigail didn’t see how throwing her life away would alter the outcome. She heard voices speaking the Satanic tongue, and then dragging sounds as someone transferred the trunk to the ground. Luke shouldn’t have bothered to put it back up top, she thought grimly. What had the Girauds been doing with such arcane tomes in the first place? She supposed there was the slightest chance they’d been protecting them from falling into the wrong hands. Yes, by all means, let’s give Coven members the benefit of the doubt. Except it was a struggle, and she didn’t know who the hell to trust anymore. She waited until it was absolutely still outside, and a tentative scan told her the dark host she’d sensed earlier had moved on, before loosing her wards. The minute she did, she felt Luke’s energy. He pulled open one of the coach doors. “I scared up a couple of horses from a nearby farm. We need to go after those books—and the girl.”She fought down the protest that rose to her lips, but it slid out anyway. “There aren’t enough of us.”“Fixed that problem too.” He smiled grimly. “I can ward you if you want to stay here, but if you’re coming we need to get moving. Don’t want to let the trail get too cold.” From the smirk in his voice, she knew he was being sarcastic. She sent her magic spiraling outward and felt the books pulsing with evil. No way that path would ever get cold. “Why couldn’t I feel them this strongly before? I know the trunk had to have been spelled, but still…”“The trunk was spelled, and by someone with magic to burn. It’s over in those trees. I guess Carolyn’s minions were in a hurry and didn’t have a wagon.”Abigail felt like a rube. The book trunk had already been packed and sealed when she’d picked Carolyn up in New York. She’d never even thought to examine it. “Did you see Carolyn?”“Yup.” His upper lip curled into a sneer. “Caught a glimpse of her riding a mad wolf.”“Do you suppose there’s some way we could separate her from Goody Osborne?” Abigail bit her lip nervously.Luke shook his head. “Even if we could—and I don’t think it’s possible—there are too many unknowns. Her parents might have been turned. If that happened, the kid could have embraced evil before it entered her body. By the time we sorted all that out, the dark would have had one too many chances to kill us.”Abigail winced at the unvarnished truth in his words. Any residual doubts she held about the necessity of destroying the girl melted away. “Yes,” she said through clenched teeth. “I’m coming with you.”Luke boosted her onto one of the horses. She pulled her skirts out of the way. It was a normal saddle and this was scarcely a time for modesty. Luke vaulted onto his horse, kneeing it, and they took off up the Overland Stage Road at close to a full gallop. “We’re making too much noise,” she sent.“Doesn’t matter. They’ll expect us to come after them.”She clung to the horse with her legs, enjoying the feel of not having to ride sidesaddle. Luke’s horse was larger, faster, and soon pulled so far ahead she could barely see him. She kneed her horse, urging it to greater speed, but the animal shied, and then reared. Abigail struggled for balance and called magic to calm the spooked animal. Something sprang at her and knocked her to the ground. She sent killing magic to stop its heart, before realizing what it was. Panting, she crawled out from under a black and gray mad wolf with blood dribbling from its nostrils, and glanced warily about. Were there more of them?Carolyn stepped from the shadows. It looked as if she was alone, but Abigail suspected otherwise. “What do you want?”“Simple enough. I plan to use you to get rid of Breana Giraud—and others.” A sneer twisted the girl’s features into something unpleasant. “You think people don’t know you’re part of Coven government?”Abigail set her mouth in a hard line. “Fine. So the other side knows about me. Question is, who are you really?”“Don’t you recognize me?” Carolyn stepped closer and turned her face from side to side as if posing for a photographer. “I gave you my name, but I am far more than that.”She’s arrogant. Perhaps I can use that in some way. Abigail spread her hands in a placating gesture. “Because I’m used to seeing you as Carolyn Giraud, I’m not certain who you are.” She paused for emphasis. “I’d like you to tell me.”“Certainly.” A feral grin made the child look like something out of a nightmare. “It is always better to know who your adversary is.” Her voice became soft and silky. “I have access to magic you would kill for. You may not know it, but you’d like to work for us.” She laughed, but it sounded more like broken glass shattering against itself, than a twelve-year-old girl’s mirth. “We have real power, not that paltry tripe the Coven settles for.”Abigail waited. When Carolyn didn’t say anything else, she said, “I’m listening…and considering your offer. Life is always better than the alternative.”“Ha! They said you couldn’t be turned, but I told them they were wrong. I am The Promised, resurrected out of legend. Goody Osborne was but a start, and this little girl is merely a convenience.” Something like an outraged squawk followed the words, but Goody silenced Carolyn almost immediately. “What I really want is you, Abigail Ruskin.”Shit! She couldn’t be The Promised… “You mean the Dark Messiah?” Abigail scrunched up her face and held her breath, hoping against hope she’d gotten it wrong.“The same.” A supercilious expression etched into the girl’s features. “At least the other side has heard of me. Warms my black, black heart.”“The books—?” Abigail hunted for a connection while she rode herd on terror that threatened to immobilize her, and clouded her judgment. If ever she needed a clear head, it was now, but her mind raced feverishly.“They weren’t doing the girl’s parents any good moldering away in that underground chamber. I’d actually been searching for them for years.” She flashed a sly smile. “They used to be mine…”

Short Bio:Ann Gimpel is a clinical psychologist, with a Jungian bent.  Avocations include mountaineering, skiing, wilderness photography and, of course, writing.  A lifelong aficionado of the unusual, she began writing speculative fiction a few years ago. Since then her short fiction has appeared in a number of webzines and anthologies. Her longer books run the gamut from urban fantasy to paranormal romance. She’s published over 20 books to date, with several more contracted for 2014.
A husband, grown children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out her family.

Long Bio: Ann Gimpel is a mountaineer at heart. Recently retired from a long career as a psychologist, she remembers many hours at her desk where her body may have been stuck inside four walls, but her soul was planning yet one more trip to the backcountry. Around the turn of the last century (that would be 2000, not 1900!), she managed to finagle moving to the Eastern Sierra, a mecca for those in love with the mountains. It was during long backcountry treks that Ann’s writing evolved. Unlike some who see the backcountry as an excuse to drag friends and relatives along, Ann prefers solitude. Stories always ran around in her head on those journeys, sometimes as a hedge against abject terror when challenging conditions made her fear for her life, sometimes for company. Eventually, she returned from a trip and sat down at the computer. Three months later, a five hundred page novel emerged. Oh, it wasn’t very good, but it was a beginning. And, she learned a lot between writing that novel and its sequel.
Around that time, a friend of hers suggested she try her hand at short stories. It didn’t take long before that first story found its way into print and they’ve been accepted pretty regularly since then. One of Ann’s passions has always been ecology, so her tales often have a green twist.
In addition to writing, Ann enjoys wilderness photography. She lugs pounds of camera equipment in her backpack to distant locales every year. A standing joke is that over ten percent of her pack weight is camera gear which means someone else has to carry the food! That someone is her husband. They’ve shared a life together for a very long time. Children, grandchildren and three wolf hybrids round out their family.

My mother used to tell me my expression turned stupid when I had them, but I didn’t care about that so much anymore. I hated when the visions were true somehow, actual bits of the past. I didn’t believe in that kind of stuff.Chapter 1: Fight“She’s such a snob,” one of the young women whispered on the other side of the locker room.I stayed faced away, trying not to hear their gossip. I tugged my jeans on and pulled my shirt over my head. When I glanced in the mirror to fix my hair, I barely saw the dark brown framing my fair skin—only the way the other girls looked at me. I bent over to pick up my shoes.“The guys don’t even ask her out because she’s so stuck up.”I didn’t understand why they thought like this about me, but I didn’t much care anyway. As soon as I had my shoes on, I threw my gear bag over my shoulder and walked out.Master Trahem was on the workout floor sparring with Mr. Schmidt. Master Trahem’s uniform was starting to come open, and sweat glistened on his well-built chest.I looked away.“Bye, Kindle,” Mrs. Trahem said as I passed the front counter. “See you tomorrow.”I smiled at her, one of the few people I reserved my genuine smile for. She was a big part of the reason I came in early to help every day, her and her atrocious typing skills. She always held her fingers above the keys like a fisherman wielding a spear, as if expecting them to squirm out from under her aim.But honestly, helping with data entry was just an excuse—Mrs. Trahem was the best person I’d ever known, and I felt calmer when I was around her.“You’ll be there early, right?” Mrs. Trahem added. She tucked her silky dark hair behind her ear. There was a grace to her movement. No wonder Master Trahem had married her so quickly. At twenty-nine, she was a few years older than me but looked just as young.“Definitely.” Then I kept walking. Before I gave into the urge to turn and watch Master Trahem. The girls from the locker room followed me out into the parking lot. I sat in my car and started the engine. While I drove the forty-five minutes home, I fought to stay awake. At least traffic at nine-thirty at night was thin. I always missed rush hour. I left my apartment before six every morning and didn’t return until after ten. Being tired felt normal. As I pulled up to my building, I examined each car. I knew to whom each of them belonged, as well as half my neighbors’ friends’ cars. The girl across the hall traded boyfriends every week. She drove me nuts.I had no way of knowing what Chris was driving. I had to know which cars were supposed to be here in order to know if there was a new one. Most of my neighbors drove beaters like me, and Chris had always liked something flashy. But with him, I couldn’t depend on consistency. He was smart.I recognized all the cars tonight. I parked under the streetlight and kept the door locked while I pulled my gear bag onto my lap and slipped the strap over my shoulder. Keys ready, I jumped out of the car and jogged up the steps. I hated apartment buildings in Florida. The halls were open, no security doors to block unwanted visitors from knocking on your front door, from lurking in shadowy corners.Within about ten seconds, I was up the stairs, down the hall, and at my door. Just being able to move quickly without running out of breath was worth the cost of Taekwondo classes. I felt more confident, less scared. My door unlocked, I glanced down the hall one more time then slipped inside. I closed the door, locked it, and flipped the lights.I was not alone. He was right there, tall, thick, and blond as always. I was seeing as clearly as if through acid. I blinked to make sure he was really there. I always did that. It was stupid.Chris was always there.  Publisher: http://www.lsbooks.com/kindling-the-past-p902.php

Spring, that wonderful time of year when blossom pops out everywhere. I especially love the petals on my apple trees. Not only is it delicate and beautiful, but it holds determination and hope for the fruit the tree will bear. Year after year the trees produce these sweet flowers without ever giving up.
My heroine in Flynn's Kiss is like that blossom. No matter how many times she has been battered, Liberty continues to hold out hope for a future that bears the fruit of love.

“Flynn.”She spoke softly, but in the quiet of the early evening, her voice carried clearly, emphasizing the slight wobble to betray her nervousness. He turned his head and stared at her, his eyes direct and piercing, his chin lowered in what she recognized as a defensive gesture, designed to deter her advance. The dappled light from the fading sun gave his beautiful face an ethereal and almost sinister look, emphasized by his complete stillness, his silent watchfulness. She took a hesitant step forward and stopped at the slightest movement of his chin raising. She wished she hadn’t come, wanted to run, but she’d trapped herself, and in all honesty, she hadn’t quite expected this response. They were both adults, for heaven’s sake, and one of them should take the initiative and make their meeting less uncomfortable. She removed the Stetson from her head, no longer in peril of burning her skin as the sun lowered. His gaze flicked down to the pretty yellow hat as a few more of its feathers detached themselves and fluttered to the ground. His wicked eyebrow flicked up briefly, and then his expression returned to deadpan.“I owe you an apology.”Silence filled the gap until she huffed out a breath and tried again.“You’ve been conspicuous by your absence lately. People are missing you and I feel…responsible.” Embarrassment coursed through her. She had no idea she would have to try so hard to reach him. Convinced she simply needed to see him again for everything to be all right, it came as a debasing shock to realize he had indeed been avoiding her.She tried to keep her hands still, but her fingers seemed to have a mind of their own, twisting around the brim of her new hat. She saw his gaze flick down to stare at them and forced herself to drop them back down to her sides, holding her hat in one hand, aware of the shedding of yet more bright feathers. His attention centered on her again as she gave a small cough.“The other night, when we…” She blew out a disgusted breath at her painful reticence. She was supposed to be the mature one here. “…when we had sex. I thought it was mutual. I know I took the lead and did all the seducing, but maybe I didn’t take into consideration you weren’t interested—you seemed interested at the time, you…” She swallowed a heavy lump in her throat.
