ROMANCING THE GENRES - A VALENTINE'S GIFT

I think I’ve probably mentioned numerous times , I grew up on romances, the first one being read to me by my older sister, Margaret. The Princess Bride – still one of my favourite tales.
Then there were those naughty little Mills and Boon my mother kept on her bookshelf with enticing covers which hinted of passion.
Where we lived, we had a mobile library. Every Tuesday we could get 6 more books out and no, I did not choose children’s books specifically, I chose adventure, romance, love and life.
Some of my favourite books are the ones that defy age groups. I was read the Hobbit when I was about seven by a fantastic English teacher. The Lord of the Rings was given as a gift when I was twelve.
But I must admit to enjoying those reads I wasn’t really supposed to have.  When the Lion Feeds, Wilbur Smith. At the age of fourteen, when I picked it up after my dad had finished reading it, he quietly went to my mum and asked if it was appropriate. Her reply – if it’s not, she’ll put it down. I’ve read every Wilbur Smith book since, but I still remember the thrill of that first novel, the great feel of it being just a little bit out of my genre.
In recent years, I’ve read prolifically and I’ve found I tend to stick to the same main genre – that of romance. Within this wide genre I have discovered the delights of :
Contemporary - Nora Roberts, Sandra Brown, Anne Stuart, Lori Foster
Humour - Jennifer Cruisie, Susan Elizabeth Phillips, Rachel Gibson,
Historical – Julie Garwood, Lisa Kleypas, Julia Quinn, Teresa Medeiros
Fantasy – J R Ward, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Kresley Cole, Gena Showalter
Thrillers – Karen Rose, Julie Garwood, Karin Slaughter
Suspense – Cherry Adair, Linda Howard
Many of these authors cross the sub-genres. Is it any wonder then that I feel the need to romance the genres myself?
My first series with Liquid Silver Books, Atlantic Divide Series is contemporary, with a touch of humour.

Flight of Her Life is an all out comedy.

Amazon UK  http://amzn.to/KXiiy2Amazon.com  http://bitly.com/18iC1n7

I have just signed a contract with Taliesin for Flynn’s Kiss, a contemporary with a touch of grit and a smudge of humour and certainly the next in that series will be gritty too – and I know exactly what that storyline is already. It’s in my head waiting to be released.
I wrote a short Sci-fi as a challenge with Eva Lefoy and Allyson Lindt – more on that another day.
I loved the historical I wrote for Nanowrimo, Her Captured Groom – a real challenge, but worth the effort and I enjoyed it so much, I’m currently writing Book 2 – Hawk’s Lady.
My final work in progress at present is inspired by the wonderful Wild About Bones on Cover Reveals who loved my comedy Flight of Her Life and would like to see me write another – paranormal this time. And that’s all I have to say on that matter as it’s a secret between me and WAB! SSShhhh! http://bit.ly/1e6DMnx
So, like my reading choices, I have found in my writing that I am blurring the lines a little in the genres – and loving every moment of it.

Let me know what your favourite genre is and who inspired you to read it and I will give away one of my published books on 14th February to four lucky winners - the choice will be theirs. Romance for Valentine's Day, what nicer gift?

Eva Lefoy - New Book Release

Eva, come on in. I have chocolate and wine we can indulge in while you tell us all about your new release which by the way, I absolutely love the cover and will be buying the book today - it looks like a great, fun read
The Trouble with MemoriesMartian Mating – Book One

The Martians are coming!
No, I’m not Orson Welles and this isn’t War of the Worlds and it certainly isn’t 1938 anymore. But the Martian invasion in my story is very, very real to the characters. You see, there’s this crazy scientist named Dr. Dravis who invents a psy-link pilots can use to interface directly with their ship. What he doesn’t know won’t hurt him, but the pilots who use the psy-link are gonna have a wild ride!
Some say DNA is the real “being” here on this planet. The one who keeps everything evolving and we are just pawns in its ever-changing game. Us hapless humans! And it’s the DNA Dr. Dravis uses that puts the Martians front-and-center in the tale. You see, the Martian DNA has a virus and once that virus gets into the human host, funny things start to happen.
Our hero – a hapless human! – Captain California Sykes, is an ace pilot, a real alpha male kind of guy. But then this sultry Martian woman gets into his head via the psy-link and bam! He’s blowing up the Mars Base in the name of Martian sovereignty! Er…oops.
The scientists try to help him out, by removing the psy-unit – and his memories – to keep him chilled out. Trouble is, his girlfriend Lucy isn’t used to being ignored. And when Cal starts remembering what he’s forgotten, the trouble really heats up!

Blurb:

Helium toads!

Lieutenant Lucy Borasco has her phase pistol ready and her ex-boyfriend in her sights. She has every intention of making him pay for choosing his career over her. But she hadn’t factored in a Martian sneak invasion, Cal’s incessant need to save the universe, or the risk of permanent damage to her complexion. Getting Cal back will cost her more than she thinks, leaving her changed forever.

Captain California Sykes’ memories are gone, his career is in ruins, and his ex-girlfriend nearly kills him with a kiss. Can he overcome the Martian invasion, save the rest of the team and win Lucy back again in the process? Or will his seat-of-the-pants plans and the canned fish rations cost him everything he holds dear, including his sanity?

Here’s a snippet:
The windows flexed and the floor rumbled as the jets did another close fly-by. He ignored them in favor of intently ogling the rounded globes of Lucy’s ass. When she spun to face him, he nearly lost his balance. Three steps later, she was in his face. He braced himself for her wrath. Her fingers curled around his collar nice and tight. When she gave him a light shake, his head whipped back and forth. Maybe she was trying to rattle some sense back into his malfunctioning brain. “Comet tails, Cal. If this is some game you’re playing to make me miss you, I swear I’ll fill your ass with helium and shoot you out one of those planes!” He loved how the fire in her eyes matched her hair and the way she jutted out her chin at the end of her pronouncement. But he’d told her the truth. This was no game. His memories of her were completely gone. “How can I prove to you I’m not lying?” Her lips curled up in a smirk. “Kiss me.” With a confident toss of her head she laid claim to him, answering his questions about how he’d known her. Hell, he hadn’t known her, apparently he’d known her. The news made his dick swell with pride. His mouth quirked into a cocky smile. “Come on, Cal. Today’s Valentine’s Day after all.” Her hands caressed his neck, working their way up his jaw. “One little goodbye kiss won’t hurt.”Her touch confused him. Familiar yet foreign. New sensations and ghostly memories rose toward the surface of his mind but were squashed before they reached the light. He shook his head but the cobwebs didn’t clear. Why couldn’t he remember? Everything but those fragging ships seemed vague. A twinge in his right shoulder shot up his neck, and he couldn’t help thinking the pain was a warning. He braced for more, but none immediately came. He wanted out of this box, wanted answers. But he wouldn’t endanger anyone else to get them. “Lucy.” His voice sounded hoarse, as if he’d sucked sand into his windpipe. “Don’t.” Down below, his cock begged, yes, yes, yes.

Guest Blogger - Haley Whitehall

Romance on the Mississippi River
Haley, welcome to my blogspot, come on in and have a quiet cup of coffee while you tell us all about your new book - which by the way, I have already downloaded to kindle.

Romances in the workplace are often difficult to navigate. In my African American historical romance Midnight Heat the workplace romance takes place on the steamboat the Queen Bee. George is a roustabout, a man who loads and unloads cargo from the steamboat. After rescuing her from a burning house, he is able to get Allison a job on the Queen Bee as a chambermaid. Both of them find it difficult to keep focused on their work, their thoughts straying to each other. The only thing that saves their jobs and likely their sanity is the difference between the deck and cabin crew. Allison as a chambermaid is allowed on the boiler deck, her work requiring to enter and clean the rooms. George, on the other hand, is not allowed on the upper deck. The main deck and the boiler deck were almost like two different worlds. The main deck with the roustabouts and deckhands was a world of raw masculinity while the parlor on the boiler deck was a world of refinement often with a piano, plush carpet, chandeliers and other finery. In writing every romance there comes a time or times when the hero and heroine are separated. As the saying goes absence makes the heart grow fonder. In Midnight Heat this separation was a little different than most. After all, both George and Allison were on the same boat, Allison was just on the deck above. I’m sure you can imagine how that drove George crazy!
Blurb:
Living in St. Louis, Missouri is a nightmare for Allison. It is 1868, but for her slavery never ended. After enduring years of abuse, she reaches her breaking point. She sees a fiery death as her only escape. She did not expect to live through the night, but George came to her rescue and changed her plans. Now she has a chance to fulfill her dream of falling in love and having a normal relationship with a handsome black man. But will he accept her with her baggage and the dark secrets from her past?
At eighteen, George is ready to make his own way in the world. He leaves his brother’s farm and gets a job as a roustabout. Working on the Mississippi River gives him the freedom he craves. Going ashore one night he sees a shack along the waterfront on fire. He never expected to find a beautiful colored woman trapped inside. Protective instincts kicking in, he instantly wants to be her man and take care of her.
Will he be able to gain her trust and love or will the memories of Allison’s painful past burn their relationship to cinders before it has begun?
Excerpt:
George stood at the railing looking up at the stars, his mouth moving. Was he making a wish? She stood still, not wanting to interrupt him. She feasted upon his tall, muscular frame. His gray trousers fit him snuggly, showing off his tight ass.
George turned around and smiled. “I was wondering if you weren’t coming back down.”
“I had more ironing than I thought. I should have told you.” Why did she say that? He wasn’t her keeper.
“Just as long as you came back, it doesn’t bother me.”
His eyes quickly swept her frame. He had seen the pine green dress Mrs. Brown had given her many times, but he acted like this was the first.
“You are beautiful, Allison.”
She laughed. She looked like a freak with only half her eyebrows. “Thank you.”
He took her hand and raised it to his lips, kissing her skin chastely. His soft lips stirred her and made her ache for more.
“I saved a good spot for us,” he said, motioning for her to follow him.
A spot for us? He freely threw around the supposition they were together—which they weren’t. Still, she didn’t protest. She wasn’t sure she wanted to be closer to him, but she knew she didn’t want to push him away. They picked their way around the maze of barrels and crates, and poor and colored passengers to an area surrounded by cotton bales.
“Some privacy,” he said, a glint in his eye.
Why did they need privacy just to sleep? She gulped air. Or did he have something else in mind?

The Perfect Kiss

The Perfect kiss for me has to be the first kiss. The very first time your lips meet. Its a testing time, a tasting time. If the taste is wrong, the kiss too wet, too sloppy, too eager then the romance dies. But if the kiss is perfect - it doesn't have to be slow and sensual, it can be desperate and hungry, but it has to be perfect, then the romance is allowed to blossom and grow.

Excerpt

“How about a good luck kiss for a brave soul?”She held still so long that he wondered if she was going to make him look foolish. He could feel his smile waver as he held his breath and waited for her to make a move. If she would only dip her head and place her lips on his cheek, it would be a huge step forward and would save him a ribbing from the boys.Lydia raised a hand and brushed a stray hair back from her face, and then brought the same hand down to rest on his cheek, bringing her other hand up to cradle his face. Christ, he had no idea she was actually going to touch him. Her cool fingers delicately rested on his face, and his pulse shot through the roof. His heart hammered in his chest as she took her own sweet time while she decided whether to kiss him or not. He’d thought it would be amusing to corner her, but it appeared she’d turned the tables on him now. She’d wiped the smile off his face as she studied his lips like it was a life or death situation. She stared at his mouth for so long that he shifted uncomfortably and moved in closer so that she didn’t have far to go.It was just a kiss. A brief, innocent kiss. For one split second he imagined a light of devilment glinted in her eyes as she touched her tongue to her bottom lip and almost made him beg.Rosie clapped and Aaron stood quiet and serious as Lydia leaned toward him. Sam slowly closed his eyes, almost shuddering as her soft lips met his harder ones with a gentle pressure that she held for a moment, and that devil he suspected was inside her obviously became too much of a temptation. Her lips parted and her cool, sweet tongue swept lightly across his closed lips.
His eyes shot open, and before she could draw in a breath, he snatched her off the fence and into his arms. His mouth, hot and hungry, captured hers as he allowed himself to indulge in a deep sensuous kiss, sweeping his own tongue into her mouth, tasting her. Slowly he pulled back before she had the opportunity to withdraw. Her eyes were still wide open, her breath shallow and quick, and he smiled as he let her body slide back down his until her feet touched the floor.

A Peaceful Christmas Where Dreams Can Come True

This time last year it was my dream to write a book and have it published.  Loving Lydia, Book 1 of my Atlantic Divide Series was almost ready to send out to publishers. I was at the stage most authors will understand - I have a book, it means so much to me - how can I let someone see it, criticize it?
Well, I did send it, it was criticized and I survived. And thanks to Liquid Silver Books, my fourth book, Flight of Her Life, was published on 25th November 2013.
See - dreams really can come true.
I hope you all have a truly peaceful Christmas and all your dreams come true - and if they don't, give 'em a bit of nudge, you never know ...

Tell me your dream for a chance to win a copy of Flight of Her Life - leave a comment below.

Flight of Her Life
Blurb Traveling from New York City to Houston to meet her future in-laws and announce her engagement, accident prone Bailey finds herself in a situation beyond her control. All flights are cancelled the night before Christmas Eve, leaving Bailey stranded at the airport with a cowboy from her past. Against all odds, Sebastian manages to rescue Bailey from one disaster after another, but is it too late to rescue her from her future? Faced with a heartrending dilemma, does Bailey turn her back on the man who offers her a life of security, or does she run off to Maui with a cowboy?
ExcerptShe drew in a breath and closed her eyes briefly, while she tried to ignore the pulsing warmth spreading through her stomach. “Right, let’s go.” She turned to march away and was brought up short as he restrained her with the grasp of his strong hand on her elbow. “It’s this way; you never could find your way anywhere worth a damn.” He turned her in the opposite direction, tucked her arm into his elbow. “And you should hold on to me so you don’t slip on your naked little tush. You don’t want everyone getting an eyeful, do you?” She cast him an irritated sideways glance, but he was intent on moving through the crowds, toward the exit. “I’ve booked a hotel. There’s a shuttle bus about to leave in five minutes. It’ll be the last one of the day. They can barely get through the roads now, so get a trot on.” “I hope you’ve booked separate rooms.” She made her voice as waspish as she could, but he ignored her completely. They stepped out into the minus fifteen blizzard. She sucked in a shocked breath and felt it turn to icicles in her lungs, making her want to cough it back out again. She ducked her head just as he wrapped his thick, sheepskin coat around her shoulders, engulfing her in his warmth, and she automatically slipped her arms into the sleeves, which dangled almost to her knees. “Thank you.” Not in the least inclined to refuse his offer, she pulled the coat snug around her and tucked her nose inside the collar to absorb the warm, spicy scent of him. It smelled of horses, and leather, and man. So different from the cool, aloof lemon and washing powder aroma Phillip emanated. She whipped her nose back out of Sebastian’s coat and snapped an accusing glare over her shoulder at him as his hands firmly gripped her backside and pushed her up the two steps into the shuttle bus. “Sebastian!” He held his hands up and gave her an innocent look. “Just giving a helping hand.” “Well, don’t. I can manage fine without…” Her heel slipped in the wet and as her legs shot from underneath her, Sebastian neatly snaked his arm around her waist and let her back hit his chest. “Ooommmff.” He steadied her. “You’re not as light as you used to be.” His cool lips touched her burning ear and his breath puffed gently across her cheek, sending delicious goose bumps chasing themselves down her spine. “Must be the boobs you’ve developed since I last had my hands on you when you were sixteen.” That same fickle spine jerked to attention. She pushed away from him and lifted her chin while she stepped cautiously along the aisle. The bus was full, except for one seat which she sat in, making sure his coat was securely wrapped around her and tucked under her knees, so she didn’t expose herself to any of the other passengers. She understood why crossing your legs at this stage could be considered vulgar. “You have to find a seat, son, or you’re walking. No standing when we have to travel the interstate.” The bus driver turned his head and pinned her with a look over the top of his glasses. “You could ask your girl to sit on your knee, but I can’t allow you to stand.” She didn’t even have time to shake her head in denial before Sebastian leaned down, scooped her up and plunked her on his lap. Her legs dangled between his wide spread ones, and his arms wrapped snugly around her waist. He burrowed his icy nose into the collar of his coat and buried it in her neck as she snaked her freezing legs against his warmer ones. She knew she should tell him not to get so close, she shouldn’t allow him to snuggle in, but she felt the shudder run through him and figured it wouldn’t harm under the circumstances if she relaxed against him and they shared their warmth. She was sure Phillip would understand.

Guest Post - Allyson Lindt - Learning New Tricks

Allyson
Welcome back to my blogspot and congratulations on your new release, pull up a chair and tell us about it.
Thanks so much for having me today, Diane. If your readers are willing to stick with me until the end of the post, there are details about a couple of awesome giveaways I’m holding (including one here) to celebrate my new book launch, and links to more posts like this one.
I pondered for while what to write my post about, and it hit me. The holidays are about friends, family, and food. Fortunately for me, Archer, the hero in my new release, Learning New Tricks, is a fantastic cook. I mean, dude makes pancakes from scratch… just because.
Keep in mind though, he’s been a bachelor and living on his own for a while. So when I asked him about his favorite dishes to make, some of his answers were a little… unusual. I’ve tried them all, though, and they’re all tasty.
For instance, this one:
Stuffed French ToastThis makes 2 servings, and Archer likes to turn the left-over egg mixture into scrambled eggs to serve on the side, but that’s completely up to you
Ingredients(Toast) - 1 loaf unsliced French bread (the crusty kind you find fresh in the bakery) - 6 large eggs - 1/4 cup milk - 1 tsp vanilla - 1/4 tsp cinnamon
(Filling) - 3 oz cream cheese, softened - 1 tbsp orange marmalade
And grab your favorite fruit topping or syrup to top it all off. Strawberries and whipped cream, are yummy but pick and choose and try different things.
Instructions: - Beat eggs, milk, vanilla, and cinnamon in a bowl large enough for the bread slices, and set aside. - In a separate bowl, mix the cream cheese and marmalade until it's well blended - Slice the bread so every other slice isn't cut all the way through. In other words, you want 4-6 six pieces of 2 slices of bread stuck together at the bottom, so a kind of pocket is formed. - Stuff the cream cheese mixture into the bread 'pockets' - Preheat a non-stick skillet on medium heat on the stove - Dip each bread/cheese pocket in the egg mixture right before you cook it, cook each side until golden brown, about 2-3 minutes each side. - Serve warm with your favorite French toast topping
**If you’d like to meet Archer, and find out what he does besides cook, make sure you check out Learning New Tricks.

Blurb
Archer should be focusing on how to keep his comic book shop from financially crashing and burning in an epic way. However, when his sexy-as-hell best friend and Sunday-afternoon-movie buddy, Tori, asks him to teach her how to keep emotions out of sex, he welcomes the distraction.
Tori couldn’t ask for a better best friend than Archer. He respects her fandom, and he lets her sell her custom-made costumes in his store. Even better, he’s willing to give her a hands-on demonstration of how to keep love and sex separate. Experience has taught her not to fall for a guy who’s as infatuated with an ex-girlfriend as Archer is, so she’s already got the no-love bit covered.
With each new lesson, the line between the physical and emotional blurs a little more. Can they let go of their pasts—and learn a few new tricks along the way—or will they lose their friendship and budding relationship for good?
GiveawayI’m giving away a $10 Amazon gift card, and copies of Conflict of Interest (Bits & Bytes, #1), and Toeing the Line (Bits & Bytes, #2) to one person who visits during my blog tour. Flight of Her Life - Excerpt

Excerpt

One entire week! How in hell’s name was she supposed to keep up the pretense for one whole week? Honestly, when Phillip’s parents saw beneath her cultured voice and her ability to dress slick, the premier family of Houston, Texas were going to run her out of town. They were going to realize what a fraud she was when she made her first move and destroyed their house with a flick of her wrist. Then their precious boy would never be allowed to marry her. Bailey crossed her legs to relieve the ache in one buttock and give the other side of her bottom a little more weight. Sitting on the floor of the elevator for three hours the previous night had not been the most comfortable experience of her life and her backside hurt. She was going to cross her legs on this occasion, but she needed to get out of the habit as soon as she could. After all, she didn’t want people to think she was cheap. She wondered if she would be considered vulgar for spending three hundred dollars on a rare bottle of bourbon and an expensive fragrance in order to impress people she hadn’t even met. Impatient, she flicked her gaze up to check the flight board for the millionth time. She pressed her lips softly together to make sure her lipstick was still in place and glanced around the crowded New York City airport lounge, nervously patting her neat blonde coiffure which had taken her forty minutes to strap down. As her eyes anxiously scanned the room, they fell on the familiar sight of a cowboy by the checkout in duty free. Second time she’d noticed him in an hour and she’d tried not to make eye-contact in case he decided to come over and re-acquaint himself. Unable to resist, Bailey raised one perfectly sleek eyebrow, and leaned forward, pushed her black rimmed glasses further up her nose to take a closer peek. Nice. Purely from a female’s perspective, she could see nothing wrong with the male specimen in duty free. Long lean legs in pale, worn denim, and those thighs under that denim contracted as he bent to pick up his rucksack, sending an unwelcome fission of heat burning a rapid line through her stomach and into her loins, just like he had always managed to do. If she had to judge, she’d bet those muscles filled his jeans better than they used to when she’d been sixteen and he’d been… Aware of her heart rate accelerating, Bailey jerked upright with a short sharp gasp, her eyes widening as the overwhelming sensation of carnal desire took her by surprise. She was an engaged woman—almost—she shouldn’t even be looking at tall, well-defined cowboys, especially ones she had already been…intimate with. Not that it should count as it had been so long ago, but he obviously still managed to make her mouth water. Rucksack flung across his shoulder, his eyes caught hers and pierced through her like a blue laser as he walked straight toward her, leaving no doubt he’d been perfectly aware of where she was the whole time. Desperate not to be caught staring, Bailey dipped her eyes, uncrossed her legs and re-crossed them the other way. She accidently flicked her half-filled coffee cup as she flexed her knee, and felt the searing hot liquid splash down her legs and soak through her short neat black skirt. “Shit.” With a feral growl, she ducked her head and flicked at the scalding liquid with a small napkin that had come with the coffee, dismayed to see tiny white balls of tissue gathering across her wet skirt as she dabbed furiously. Her jerky movements caused her heavy rimmed glasses to clunk off her nose and smack painfully onto her chin. Rolling her eyes she raised her head and came face to face with the handsome cowboy. Crooked smile in place, his amused blue eyes met hers as he hunkered down next to her, slowly reached out, unhooked her glasses from behind her ears and removed them from her chin. He folded them and offered them back to her. “Hey, Bailey. Fancy meeting you here.” His familiar low drawl made her mouth drop open. She wasn’t sure whether he could see the saliva dribbling from the corner of her lips, but she raised shaking fingers and slid them across her skin to check just in case. Annoyed with herself, she’d been convinced she had moved on; found a new life existing without him, when obviously he still had an overwhelming effect on her. His eyes followed the movement of her fingers, skimmed further up to stare at her mouth, his own firm lips parted and his tongue took a slow swipe across his bottom lip, sending her pulse into overdrive. “Hi.” Short, sharp and efficient—after all she was about to become engaged to be married and he had to realize he had no right coming on to her in an airport lounge, no matter how long she had known him. She reached out her left hand, twizzled the rock back the correct way, and deliberately dazzled him with her nine carat diamond ring as she grasped her glasses, and tried to take them back. His smile stuck as he held on. She bared her teeth at him through her own tight smile and pulled the glasses toward her in a restrained tug-of-war. Her perfect manicure gripped the frame, the left lens popped out, completed a slow-motion somersault, and smacked onto the hard tiled floor in front of her, breaking in two. “Shit.” Dropping off her seat to the floor, Bailey frantically grabbed the two broken pieces of her lens, stabbing the nail of her forefinger sharply into the floor tile in her short-sighted desperation. She felt the snap of it, like a part of her own finger had cracked. Heat blazed across her cheeks as her heart filled with anguish, her finger throbbed with agony, and she flicked rapid glances at the dark haired cowboy whose smile had spread right across his beautiful face, showing even white teeth. His wide, muscular chest and broad shoulders shook with laughter. “Bailey, you shouldn’t hide your pretty face behind those frames, just to make yourself look sophisticated.” “Shut up, Sebastian.” She flung herself back on the seat and felt the snag and tear as her tights caught on the edge of the tubular seating. “Oh my God.” Despair had her wailing as the cowboy’s laughter burned her ears. He reached out a hand, cupped the calf of her leg in his warm rough palm and unhooked her tights with the fingers of his other hand, stealing her breath as he smoothed those long, warm fingers up the back of her knee. Breathless, she gazed down at his handsome, angular face. “I don’t think you should do that.” “Really?” He shuffled closer, his hand edged higher to skim up the back of her thigh; her breath came in short, panicked gasps. “No, my fiancé wouldn’t like it.” Laughter rumbled out of him as he removed his hand from her leg, kneeled in front of her and leaned his forearms lightly across her knees, raising himself up so she felt his breath dance across her cheek.
“Good, because I’m not going to do it to your fiancé.”

5 Places to Find Story Ideas - M S Kaye

A warm welcome back to M S Kaye who visited here not so long ago on the launch of her fabulous book The Fight Princess.

This time she's here to show us her new release Once.Tell us, where do you find your story ideas? The first question most people ask me when they find out I write is “How do you come up with your ideas?” I think part of the trick is just to be constantly tuned into that part of your brain. Where other people might think, “Wow, I need to Facebook that,” writers are thinking, “Ooh, that’s a great story idea!” Other than everyday life, here are some places where I find ideas and inspiration:1.      History—Some crazy things have happened in our world throughout the ages. Why not use it? I either pick an event or circumstance and modify it to fit my purposes, or create a link to some major event in history.
2.      Mythology and Fairy Tales—Even crazier things happen in mythology, which makes it a ripe playing ground for writers. The novel that I’m currently rewriting/editing is about teenagers who have been reincarnated as Sumerian Gods. The book recreates a mythological story in a modern way.
3.      Movies—No, I don’t mean steal ideas, but you can pull bits and pieces about the story or characters and then twist it around in your mind and come up with something completely different.
4.      Dreams—I know it sounds corny, but some of my favorite stories come to me from the flashes I see in my dreams. My first novel was a story I’d dreamed clearly. It took me years to realize it wasn’t going to go away and I needed to write it down. Now it’s one of my favorite stories.
5.      Literature—I love referencing famous works from history to hint at the theme or plot points to come. Or maybe take an O. Henry story and expand it in a modern way. Maybe find out what happened to Tom Sawyer when he grew up.Where do you find your inspiration?Once

Her first and also her Once.
Jonathan is studying to become a priest. He is three days from taking vows. He will not be a priest.
Rebecca’s major is pre-law. She is supposed to take over her father’s law firm. She will not be lawyer.
Their paths cross at exactly the right moment, when each most needs to hear what the other has to say. Jonathan’s structured life is turned sideways, but Rebecca also helps him learn how to forgive himself. It was self-defense, not murder.
Rebecca finds the strength to stand up to her father, to be the real her. If Jonathan likes her writing, it must be worth pursuing.
They must each struggle to forge a new path without each other’s comfort and strength, with only memories of the one day that changed everything.
