My Inspiration - The Loneliness

After dropping off a baby hedgehog this morning at Cuan Wildlife Sanctuary, I took Beau and Skye for a walk along Wenlock Edge, one of my favourite places.

My head has been a little empty of inspiration after writing Copycat in four months and then some really hard editing. I don't classify it as writer's block, but just a need for my brain to rest. This is the place to unleash all those ideas again. In the early morning mist with the sun creeping over the Edge you can simply stand and let the silence pour over you. With nothing but gentle birdsong and the snuffling of the dogs. This is my inspiration.

NEW RELEASE - Jeevani Charika

It was the perfect marriage… until they fell in love.
Chaya is a young woman torn between her duty to family and her life in the UK. While her traditional Sri Lankan parents want her to settle down into marriage, what they don’t know is that Chaya has turned away the one true love of her life, Noah, terrified of their disapproval.
Gimhana is hiding his sexuality from his family. It’s easy enough to pretend he’s straight when he lives half a world away in the UK. But it’s getting harder and harder to turn down the potential brides his parents keep finding for him.
When Chaya and Gimhana meet, a marriage of convenience seems like the perfect solution to their problems. Together they have everything - friendship, stability and their parents’ approval. But when both Chaya and Gimhana find themselves falling in love outside of their marriage, they’re left with an impossible decision – risk everything they’ve built together, or finally follow their heart?

A Walk in the Fog - Dalmatian Days

In the days before our big thug of a black Labrador arrived, there was this cute little darling. She's the one in the middle at the back and she was probably around 6 weeks old in this picture. Eight weeks old in the next one on the day we brought her home.
Skye was my inspiration for The Keeper and the book is dedicated to her.

When she was around eight months old, Skye was left for several hours on her own, something we had never done before - and never done since! She provided her own entertainment and quite literally ate our kitchen doors.

And there started the tiny nugget that formed Domino's character in The Keeper. A male Dalmatian, much bigger than Skye, I based him on Skye's dad, a glorious big example so like Skye in looks.

The story of The Keeper formulated some years ago when Skye and I would wander through the deserted woodlands over the far side of The Ironbridge in Shropshire along Benthall Woods. Dark and creepy, the acoustics along the valley give a false sense of security. You can hear the voices of people in the park on the other side of the river at certain times of the day as though they're right next to you. But if something happened, there is no easy way for them to get to you.

It was late in the day, one dismal autumn when Skye and I went for our walk. Ironbridge had an eerie atmosphere that comes when the fog presses down and the streets are deserted. The chatter of the people in the park was subdued and I realised that it probably wasn't a wise decision to take the path I did.

As Skye trotted ahead of me, the hairs on the back of my neck prickled as I felt someone watching me. I froze. Turning my head, I scanned the steep slope of the woodlands above me. There, in the dusky light was a herd of fallow deer. As I watched and waited, they literally faded into the background, their camouflage so effective in the darkening of the day.

I held my breath for so long, before I went on my way not wanting Skye to notice the deer and take chase. But the idea jangled in the back of my mind. What if that had been a man? What if he'd been watching me, waiting...

And so The Keeper began...

When I was sixteen I desperately wanted to join the police force. My father had been in the RAF as had my brother so I was quite accustomed to shift work. My middle sister joined the Force and I really wanted to as well. Unfortunately for me, that year I was too young for the intake and me mam (being from Georgdie origins...) insisted that I do something productive in the intervening year and enrolled me in a private secretary's course at the local college . It was a two year course!

By the end of it, mam pushed an advert for a private secretary under my nose, I got the overpaid job and quite frankly that was the end of my police career.

In the meantime, the 17 year old me met my tall, dark and handsome. A young police officer 4 years my senior, 6'7", dark brown hair, brown eyes. How could I resist?

Some years later, 35 years of marriage and two gorgeous daughters, my poor long-suffering husband is now subjected to nudges at 3:00 am to enquire about police procedures for my latest psychological thriller.

My children and hubby absolutely hate watching thrillers with me, because I always know 'who dunnit' and I can't help but share...

I'm delighted to say that so many people have tried and failed to guess the real criminal in The Keeper. What do you think?

Getting Back into the Paranormal for the Month of October

Since finishing the thriller, I now have to wait for my critique partner's comments. Tapping my fingers, wondering what I should do with a "little" spare time, I came across a partially written manuscript. The follow-on from Banshee Seduction. I clicked on the Amazon link for Banshee Seduction and read a few of the reviews, then came across this one:

"The enticing and enchanted world that the author has created leaves you wanting more books! I am so glad she has plans for this series. Her best friend, Roni, is a vampire (sort of). And of course Wolf, a football player and hottie shifter that everyone wants to get to know. And we can’t forget Montgomery himself – the enigma that managed to escape from Hell and return to earth!

Another sinfully seductive and addicting read from this author!"

My partially written manuscript is indeed Roni's and Daniel's story and this review is every reason I need to get back into the paranormal...

If you haven't read Banshee Seduction, and in this month of the paranormal, you want a spooky read with a good dose of fun, you can find it here:

Let it Snow, Let it Snow, Let it Snow...

Just a quickie if you happen to be snowed in...

Blurb Traveling from New York City to Houston to meet her future in-laws and announce her engagement, accident prone Bailey finds herself in a situation beyond her control. All flights are cancelled the night before Christmas Eve, leaving Bailey stranded at the airport with a cowboy from her past. Against all odds, Sebastian manages to rescue Bailey from one disaster after another, but is it too late to rescue her from her future? Faced with a heartrending dilemma, does Bailey turn her back on the man who offers her a life of security, or does she run off to Maui with a cowboy?
Excerpt
Snorting out a laugh, despite herself, Bailey moved in closer so her nose almost touched his, the small breaths she managed to persuade into her lungs weren’t going to be enough to sustain her. Her eyelashes fluttered, her eyelids started to close. They flew open again as she felt him give a sharp tug at her hair. It tumbled over her shoulders, wild and bouncy, sending pins flying in all directions as she slapped his hand away. “You’ve ruined it. What am I going to do now? Keep your hands off.” His smile was wide and lazy, making her heart hitch as he wrapped a curling tendril of her long blonde hair around his index finger and drew her face back down to his. “I love your hair. Why would you do that to it when it’s just perfect as it is?” Reluctant pleasure at his admiration spread glowing warmth through her chest. His mouth hovered closer, then closer still, his breath fanned across her skin before he dipped in, touched his lips to hers and made her melt. Terror gripped her as she realized what she was doing and with a strength born of desperation, she slapped her hand on the cowboy’s shoulder and sent him sprawling to the floor. “Jesus Christ, Sebastian, what do you think you are doing?” “Saving you from yourself.” He sat up, drew his knees up to his chest and draped his forearms over his knees. “You’re about to make the biggest mistake of your life and someone has to stop you.” Taking a long, slow draught of air-conditioned oxygen, Bailey stared down at his all too familiar face and felt sheer panic engulf her at the thought of how much damage this man could do to her heart. “I don’t need to be saved. There’s no mistake.” “Well, where in hell’s name is he? It’s the day before Christmas Eve, it’s minus ten out there, a blizzard’s coming, and he left you alone. Why?” “I had to work an extra two days to make sure everything was in order before I left for the week.” She begrudged the fact she actually felt obliged to explain anything to him and annoyance had her giving a sharp flick of her foot as she uncrossed her leg once more. The pointed toe of her smart patent heels jabbed neatly into his shin, and for once she felt totally unrepentant about her lack of spatial awareness as he yelped and drew his legs back rapidly. Rolling his eyes, he moved to his knees. “He’s the goddamned boss, Bailey. He left you to clear up while he went on ahead and started his vacation early.” “His parents needed him to attend a function.” “His fiancée probably needed him to help carry her luggage.” “It’s okay, don’t fuss. The luggage is already booked on; I only have my purse with me.” He glanced around, sighed heavily before waving his hand at the empty seating next to her. “Where’s your coat?” “Well, I put it in the top of my suitcase when I arrived, save carrying it.” He rolled back to sit on his heels while he studied her. Bailey felt a warm heat spread up her neck into her face. He was the only person she knew who could make her blush just by meeting her eyes. As she tried to distract herself, she dug into her purse and pulled out a small, black rubber band. She scraped her unruly hair back from her face and held the rubber band in one hand while she pulled her hair through with the other. Wrapped around once, it was too loose, so she yanked it tight and pulled her hair through a second time. Too tight, her two middle fingers trapped between the elastic and her hair. He continued to stare. She glowered back, gave her fingers a desperate wriggle and wondered if he’d noticed. She saw the annoying twitch of amusement on his lips again. “Your arms are going to start to ache if you don’t put them down.” She wrenched at her hand, felt the tear of her acrylic nail as it parted company with her middle finger, just as the rubber band snapped, pinged off and her hair tumbled wildly around her face again. Red poker hot heat surged though her finger making her want to whimper and slide it into her mouth to ease the pain. She stared down at her perfect French manicure, ruined by a missing acrylic on one hand and a broken one on the other. Her eyes rose to his slightly blurred face as he chuckled and rubbed his forehead. “You did not get hit by my rubber band. Do not try to tell me you did.” Sebastian simply removed his hand and let her see the little white wheal mark surrounded by red. She squinted and leaned forward to take a closer look as he picked the broken rubber band up from his lap and wiggled it at her. Blowing out a disgusted breath, she sat back in her seat and crossed her arms over her chest. It was probably the safest thing she could do today. She was having one of her minor destroy-the-world days. It would blow over, and tomorrow she would be back to normal. Almost. As normal as her life ever got.
