New Old Art: The Fairy Queen

FairyqueenSmall Finally got back in the mood to do some art this week. Feels nice. This is actually a really old sketch that I finally got around to coloring, but it's nice to have a projects off that very long "to-do" list.  Naturally, I adapted it to swag on Cafepress and Zazzle.

I've started work on preparing "The Girl With No Name" for a print edition. Planning to create an entirely new cover and add some interior touches. There will be four books in the set, and I want them to look like they belong together. Hoping to have it out sometime in September, but we'll see. Shooting for Horse Feathers to come out in ebook/print before Christmas, but too early to be precise.

Art Crawl Tonight and New Review

Will be appearing at the Franklin Art Crawl again tonight. They took July off but back for August.

I got a lovely review from another author H. David Blalock. He was a fellow guest at Hypericon and kind enough to buy a copy. I admit to getting a little nervous when he said he was going to review it, as he has a lot more books under his belt than I do. But it came out well.

My nephew goes back to school next week, which may help my productivity level.  Mainly I have editing projects lined up right now.  But I also got Illustrator, which should help me get some new word shirt designs out. Hopefully will get back to some actual writing in September.

I've Got Nothing...

It's an exciting week of technical work, adding existing designs to items, and bookkeeping.  Quarterly tax time....yay.  So nothing fun  and creative to show.  Hopefully, I can get the tax stuff done early in the week and get back to writing and drawing.

Congrats to Reading Rainbow for hitting their Kickstarter goal!

Little Rock in August...

bookandmeforWeb I think it's safe to announce that I'm scheduled as a guest for the River City Comic Expo in Little Rock, AR on August 16th.  Since we'll be diving through Memphis on the 15th, I'm hoping to set up some kind of appearance there. But nothing confirmed yet.

July so far is staying pretty clear as far as appearances or travel goes, which is a good thing.  I've been running around so much that I'm still not completely unpacked from the L.A. trip...I haven't even gotten the few pictures I took off my camera.

I have been working on the prep for the 2nd Edition of Living Single on Minimum Wage.  Conceptually I think much of the book still holds up pretty well, but I very much want to get the examples updated. We knew it would need a new edition every 5 years or so anyway, but a few of the old ones are starting to feel a little embarrassing.  My co-writer and I have agreed to keep the same cover and just add a "2nd Edition" label.

Back to comics, my very talented friend and Amoeba Ink contributor Ashley Malone has recently graduated with a BFA in Animation and has a new portfolio up for viewing. You should check it out.

New PPL Design, Hypericon, and Scares that Care

I feel like I've been running solid since Disneyland but not getting that much done.  However, I did manage this design based on an Alison quote from the Pretty Little Liars season premier.

Hypericon was fun. It was my first convention to be officially on the guest list, which was pretty cool. I sat back to back with Jack Ketchum who was very nice and friendly but writes scary stuff.

One of the things Jack and I talked about was our desire to leave the world a better place. So I thought I'd help spread the world about the Scares the Care Weekend in Williamsburg, VA June 27-29. Basically a horror convention for charity, featuring actors, authors, and other celebrities. I tend to avoid straight horror in my own reading and viewing, but I do support helping sick children and families in need.

I had some lovely conversations with other guests and attendees, but I didn't think to bring my camera. So no photos.  Hypericon may have some later on their webpage or Facebook page.

Unrelated, I got my first genuinely negative review for . Sort of a relief in a way, since no book is going to be loved universally, but I am a bit bemused when reviewers seem surprised by the length being short. It's a novella. It's shorter than a novel, longer than a short story. The price reflects that, so... eh.

New Twilight Zone Design Inspired by "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You"

Cafepress has a Twilight Zone fanportal, and I just finished watching the entire series on Hulu. The episode that disturbed me the most when I was young and still does as an adult is "Number Twelve Looks Just Like You".

Thankfully, we're not yet in an age where transformation (plastic surgery and brain washing) is mandatory, but there's still a lot of pressure to conform to societal "rules" that aren't really rules.

The design on the left is intended to mimic the badge with the model number pinned to the resisting young lady who simply wanted to be herself. A bit of an obscure reference, but sometimes those are more fun.
