Why Hope Isn’t the Same as Optimism

“We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them.”

Romans 8:28 (NLT)

Life often brings you matters that are difficult to swallow, like a sickness, a job loss, or the death of a friend or family member. Those pills are bitter going down, and we often choke on them.

But you can rest assured that God is up to something good in your life, even if you can’t see it. God is actively working to bring good out of whatever happens in or around you. To hold on to hope in the midst of tough times, you’ll need to grab hold of this truth.

The Bible says it this way: “We know that God causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God and are called according to his purpose for them” (Romans 8:28 NLT).

The Bible isn’t saying that every event in your life will be good. You and I both know that’s just not true. But it does say that when you put your whole life together, every piece of it works together for good. It’s like making a cake. You may not like the taste of each ingredient, but when it’s all put together, you can’t resist it. God wants to bake an amazingly tasty cake with your life, and he wants to use even the distasteful and bitter elements to do it.

God doesn’t promise that everything will work together like you want it to or that every story will have a happy ending. The reality is that not every business decision will make you a million dollars. Not every couple that gets married will live happily ever after. Not every child will become captain of the football team.

Instead, the verse reminds us that we can have absolute confidence that the Master Designer of the universe “causes everything to work together for the good of those who love God.” (Notice that this promise is for “those who love God,” not for people who don’t know God yet.)

Hope isn’t the same as optimism. It isn’t the belief that something bad will turn out well. It’s the absolute confidence that every part of your life ultimately will make sense, regardless of how it turns out this side of eternity.

From our vantage point, life looks like a mess at times. But God’s view from heaven isn’t the same as ours.

You can’t even imagine the good that God has in store for your future. God promises, “I have good plans for you, not plans to hurt you. I will give you hope and a good future” (Jeremiah 29:11 NCV).

Your future is in God’s hands—and there’s no better place for it to be.

How have you seen God work a bad experience out for your good or for the good of someone you know?
How is Jesus’ death on the cross an example of God working out good in a bad situation?
Think of your life like a cake. What “ingredient” from that cake tastes bitter right now? Spend a few minutes asking God to help you trust him to bring good—a beautiful, tasty cake—even out of the bitter ingredients.

Confianza de Ser Embajador de Cristo

“Así que somos embajadores de Cristo; Dios hace su llamado por medio de nosotros. Hablamos en nombre de Cristo cuando les rogamos: «¡Vuelvan a Dios!»”. 2 Corintios 5:20 (NTV)

Tu trabajo en la familia de Dios es invitar a otros a unirse a la familia. De hecho, eres un embajador de Cristo. Eso significa que, dondequiera que vayas, representas a Jesús.

La Biblia dice: “Así que somos embajadores de Cristo; Dios hace su llamado por medio de nosotros. Hablamos en nombre de Cristo cuando les rogamos: «¡Vuelvan a Dios!»” 2 Corintios 5:20 (NTV).

Puede que pienses: “Simplemente no estoy calificado para ser un embajador de Cristo”. Piensas que requiere una personalidad especial o ser bueno para persuadir a las personas. O tal vez te cuesta encontrar la confianza que necesitas para contarle a la gente sobre la esperanza que tienes en Jesús.

Aquí hay cinco verdades que te darán confianza para ser un embajador de Jesucristo:

Todo el mundo tiene los mismos anhelos que tienes tú. No dejaste de ser humano cuando naciste de nuevo en la familia de Dios. Todavía tienes los mismos impulsos y deseos humanos básicos que todos los demás tienen. Eso significa que lo que estás ofreciendo a las personas, cómo vivir una vida con propósito, es lo que todos anhelan.Todo el mundo tiene las mismas preguntas que tú tienes. Where Do I Find Real Hope?

“May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in him. Then you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”

Romans 15:13 (GW)

At the end of World War II, a U.S. submarine came back to dock at Newport News, Virginia. As it came into port, something terrible happened, and the submarine began to sink. The Coast Guard was immediately dispatched to save the crew, and divers swam down to the submarine. As they approached it, they heard a sailor using a hammer to tap Morse code on the hull. His question: “Is there hope?”

That’s a fundamental question of life: Is there hope?

It’s asked every day by thousands of people in thousands of different ways:

When someone is sitting in the doctor’s office awaiting test results.When a couple get nowhere despite months and months in counseling.When talking to an accountant before walking into bankruptcy court.When a family hears their child is missing.

You can go 40 days without food and around three days without water. You can go and estimated eight minutes without air. But you can’t go a single second without hope. It’s an essential part of life. When hope is gone, life is over.

Because hope is in such short supply in our society today, people fall for all kinds of scams. They trust in false hopes like astrology, big bank accounts, quack cures, or a steady career. Inevitably, those false hopes disappoint. In fact, nothing disappoints worse than false hope.

So where do you turn to find real hope? The Bible says turn to God.

In Romans 15:13, the Bible says, “May God, the source of hope, fill you with joy and peace through your faith in him. Then you will overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit” (GW).

God is the only source of hope that’ll never disappoint. When you place your faith in him, he provides joy, peace, and hope that overflow.

You need that kind of hope.

God is always there. He’s in your past, in your present, and in your future. He’s with you in the good places. He’s with you in the evil places.

He is everywhere. And you are never, ever alone. Where God is, hope is.

Talk It Over

When do you have the most difficulty seeing God’s presence in your life?
How does knowing about God’s constant presence give you hope in the midst of despair?
How can you encourage another person with a reminder of God’s presence?

Where to find a hope that will not disappoint.

God proved his love for you through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer:

“Dear God, I don’t want my sin to separate me from you any longer. You have promised that if I believe in Jesus, you’ll forgive me for everything I’ve ever done wrong, and you’ll accept me into your family and bring me to heaven one day to live with you for eternity.

“Jesus, I confess my sin, and I believe you are my Savior. I trust you when you say salvation comes by grace, through faith, and not by anything I do. I ask you to come into my life as my Lord. Today, I commit my life to you.

“I want to live the way you created me to live—at peace and rested—and to use the remainder of my life to serve you. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Nadie Debería Llorar Solo

“Alégrense con los que están alegres y lloren con los que lloran”. Romanos 12:15 (NTV)

Si alguna vez has pasado por un momento realmente difícil, sabes lo importante que es tener a alguien que este a tu lado y llore contigo. Es por eso por lo que Dios quiere que tengas el apoyo de una familia de la iglesia, para que no estés solo durante los inevitables tiempos de crisis.

Nadie debería tener que esperar solo en el hospital cuando un ser querido se somete a una cirugía riesgosa. Nadie debería tener que esperar solo por un informe de laboratorio. Nadie debería tener que esperar solo las noticias de un campo de batalla donde está sirviendo su hijo, hija o cónyuge. Nadie debería estar solo frente a una tumba. ¡Imagínate la profunda desesperación que conlleva enfrentar algo como esto por ti mismo!

Sucederán situaciones trágicas en tu vida, y es aconsejable establecer una red de seguridad ahora.

¿Cuál es la red de seguridad de Dios para ti? Es un grupo de creyentes que están comprometidos contigo y tú con ellos.

¿Quién está comprometido contigo en este momento? ¿Quién estaría a tu lado en un instante si lo necesitaras, evitando que te desesperes? ¿O quién puede contar contigo para estar ahí para ellos en cualquier momento?

La Biblia dice: “Tengan compasión unos de otros. Ámense como hermanos y hermanas. Sean de buen corazón y mantengan una actitud humilde”. 1 Pedro 3:8 (NTV).

Mi grupo pequeño me ha ayudado en momentos muy difíciles y hemos enfrentado todo tipo de traumas juntos. Ellos oraron por mí, esperaron conmigo y lloraron conmigo cuando he estado aterrorizado. Hemos vivido Romanos 12:15: “Alégrense con los que están alegres y lloren con los que lloran” (NTV).

¿Eres parte de un grupo pequeño, un grupo de personas comprometidas que esperarán y llorarán contigo? No vayas por la vida sin uno, porque la comunidad es la respuesta de Dios a la desesperación.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

¿Cuándo fue la última vez que alguien te acompañó y lloró contigo? ¿Cómo impactó su ministerio de presencia en tu fe?¿Quiénes son las personas que componen tu red de seguridad?¿Cómo te has mostrado ante alguien en su momento de crisis?

¿Te has unido a la familia de Dios?

Si estás listo para confiar en la promesa de salvación de Dios y unirte a su familia espiritual, entonces haz esta oración:

“Querido Jesús, me has prometido que, si creo en ti, todo lo que he hecho mal será perdonado, aprenderé el propósito de mi vida y algún día me aceptarás en tu hogar eterno en el cielo.

Confieso mi pecado y te recibo en mi vida como mi Señor y Salvador. Hoy, te entrego cada parte de mi vida. Quiero seguirte y hacer lo que me digas.

Jesús, estoy agradecido por tu amor y por tu sacrificio que hace posible que me una a ti en el cielo. Sé que no lo merezco. Y te agradezco que no tengo que ganarme la salvación ni trabajar para obtenerla, es un regalo que me ofreces con amor. Quiero usar el resto de mi vida para servirte en lugar de servirme a mí mismo. Humildemente te entrego mi vida y te pido que me salves y me aceptes en tu familia. En el nombre de Jesús oro. Amén”.

Unfairness Points Us Toward Jesus

“The LORD hears his people when they call to him for help. He rescues them from all their troubles.”

Psalm 34:17 (NLT)

You’ll hear it from many places these days: People are basically good and unselfish. It’s their environments that turn people’s hearts toward evil.

Unfortunately, that theory just doesn’t match with what we see in human nature. If you’ve ever been around small children, you get this. They’re born with a selfish nature. Phrases like “Feed me!” “Care for me!” and “I’m the center of attention” are the rule rather than the exception.

Human injustice throughout the world and in our own communities also shatters any misconception we have that humans are all basically good. Left to our own devices, we oppress other people, hoard our food, and generally think about ourselves much more than anyone else.

And then it seems as if God looks at the humanity he created and says, “Okay, you think you’re basically good? You think human nature is basically unselfish? I’ll step back and let human nature take its course in the world. You’ll see what happens when I’m not in the picture.”

What’s true in children and society in general is also true in our lives today. You and I are treated unfairly all the time. But here’s something you may not have considered: You treat people unfairly from time to time as well, and so do I.

Our inclination to treat one another unfairly doesn’t surprise God. In fact, it shows why we need Jesus.

The reality is, without God in the situation, people treat each other inhumanely. That’s the heart of injustice and unfairness in our world—from despotic dictators to crushing poverty to racial tension in our communities.

One day God will judge every person on the planet for the injustices they commit against others. Because God is just, there must be consequences for how we treat others.

That means we need mercy. All of us have been unfair with others. We’re not just the victims of injustice. We’re perpetrators, too.

This unfairness shows us we need Jesus. God wouldn’t have needed to send his Son to die on the cross if people were generally good. The vast injustices in our world make it clear that humans can’t live moral lives on their own.

Next time you’re treated unfairly, let it be a reminder: Every person on this planet—including you and me—needs Jesus.

God proved his goodness through his Son, Jesus Christ. The Bible says, “For God loved the world in this way: He gave his one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but to save the world through him. Anyone who believes in him is not condemned, but anyone who does not believe is already condemned, because he has not believed in the name of the one and only Son of God” (John 3:16–18 CSB).

Are you ready to trust God to fulfill his promise of eternal life? If so, start by praying this simple prayer: “Dear God, I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I confess I have sinned, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe that Jesus died to take away my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust Jesus as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

¿Quién Está Cuidando De Ti?

“Alguien que está solo puede ser atacado y vencido, pero si son dos, se ponen de espalda con espalda y vencen; mejor todavía si son tres, porque una cuerda triple no se corta fácilmente”. Eclesiastés 4:12 (NTV)

Cuando te vas de vacaciones, probablemente le pidas a un vecino que cuide tu casa mientras no estás. De hecho, algunas comunidades incluso tienen grupos de vigilancia vecinal. Pero mientras tus vecinos cuidan tus cosas, ¿quién está cuidando tu alma?

¿Quién en tu vida te defiende, te protege y te ayuda a mantenerte en el buen camino?

No importa quién seas, necesitas personas que te cuiden y te adviertan de las trampas espirituales. Encontrarás a esas personas en la familia de tu iglesia. De hecho, de eso se trata la familia de Dios.

Filipenses 2:4 dice: “No se ocupen solo de sus propios intereses, sino también procuren interesarse en los demás” (NTV).

Todos tenemos puntos ciegos, áreas de lucha y tentación en nuestras vidas que no podemos ver. Ahí es donde entra la familia de tu iglesia. Se mantienen vigilantes, buscando al enemigo.

Tienes un enemigo que quiere destruir tu vida. De hecho, incluso antes de que te despiertes, Satanás está pensando en cómo derrotarte todos los días con tentaciones y pruebas, callejones sin salida y desvíos. Lucha con un arsenal de heridas, hábitos y complejos. Y si intentas luchar contra él por tu cuenta, ese arsenal puede dejarte derrotado. Por eso necesitas encontrar una comunidad de creyentes que te ayude.

Eclesiastés 4:12 dice: “Alguien que está solo puede ser atacado y vencido, pero si son dos, se ponen de espalda con espalda y vencen; mejor todavía si son tres, porque una cuerda triple no se corta fácilmente” (NTV).

La comunidad, la familia de tu iglesia, es la respuesta de Dios a la derrota espiritual. Siempre estamos mejor juntos.

God Says Respond to Unfairness With Love

“You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you.”

Matthew 5:43-44 (NIV)

Unfairness is part of the human condition. You can’t live on this earth for long without feeling like someone has treated you unfairly. Maybe it’s a parent who put you through a miserable childhood. Maybe it’s an employer who treats you more harshly than they treat your coworkers. Maybe you feel like you were handled unfairly by the legal process. Maybe you didn’t get the opportunity you thought you deserved.

You can choose to respond to the people who hurt you by hurting them. That’s the easiest choice to make, no doubt about it!

But God gives us another option in his Word: “You have heard that it was said, ‘Love your neighbor and hate your enemy.’ But I tell you, love your enemies and pray for those who persecute you” (Matthew 5:43-44 NIV).

When people hurt you, they expect you to retaliate. They expect you to seek revenge. But God wants you to do the exact opposite: He wants you to respond in love.

If you respond to mistreatment with love, you’ll keep the other person from controlling you. You can’t control when another person treats you unfairly. You can control whether you get bitter in the process. You can control your response to injustice.

Just because you respond to an offender lovingly doesn’t mean you continue to allow injustice. On the contrary, we must lovingly seek justice. We must work for justice in the world without retaliating. The Bible commands us to be “fair-minded and just. Do what is right!” (Jeremiah 22:3 NLT).

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was a great example of this. He fought against injustice without violence. He overcame evil through the power of love. He followed the example of Jesus, who chose to forgive his persecutors even as they were killing him.

That’s our calling as followers of Jesus. Unfairness and injustice may be part of the human condition, but we must not feed into it. Instead, God calls us to respond in love.

No Te Canses. ¡Mantente Conectado!

“Es mejor ser dos que uno, porque ambos pueden ayudarse mutuamente a lograr el éxito”. Eclesiastés 4:9 (NTV)

¿Sabías que Dios tiene una obra especial para ti? Por eso estás vivo. Él te creó para hacer buenas obras que planeó para ti incluso antes de que nacieras. Efesios 2:10 dice: “Pues somos la obra maestra de Dios. Él nos creó de nuevo en Cristo Jesús, a fin de que hagamos las cosas buenas que preparó para nosotros tiempo atrás” (NTV).

Pero Dios nunca tuvo la intención de que hicieras buenas obras por ti mismo. Él sabe que eso sólo conduciría a la fatiga.

La Biblia dice: “Dos personas son mejores que una, porque hacen más cosas trabajando juntas” Eclesiastés 4:9 (NTV).

A veces pensamos que las personas hacen su mejor trabajo solas. Por ejemplo, existe la idea errónea de que la Madre Teresa sirvió sola en las calles de Calcuta. Pero en realidad tenía un ejército de hermanas ayudándola.

También necesitas que otras personas te ayuden a cumplir la obra que Dios tiene para tu vida. Por ti mismo, no podrás hacer mucho. Pero trabajando con otras personas, puedes hacer más.

Por sí mismos, los copos de nieve no son muy fuertes. Pero si se pegan suficientes copos de nieve, ¡pueden detener el tráfico! La gente es de la misma manera. Por nuestra cuenta, tú o yo puede que no seamos mucho. Pero juntos, podemos hacer una mayor diferencia, con cada persona haciendo lo que Dios les ordenó hacer.

Tal vez te sientas agotado hoy. ¿Tienes a alguien ayudándote? Si no, te estás perdiendo uno de los beneficios de estar conectado a una familia de la iglesia. Puedes asistir a una iglesia, pero eso no significa que estés conectado con su gente. ¿No estás seguro de cómo conectarte? Si tu iglesia ofrece grupos pequeños, comienza uniéndote a uno.

La comunidad es la respuesta de Dios a la fatiga.

¿Has descubierto la obra que Dios tiene para tu vida? ¿Qué es y cómo te ayudan otras personas a cumplirla?Piensa en un momento en que trabajaste con otros para realizar la obra de Dios. ¿De qué manera trabajar juntos aseguró el mejor resultado?¿Cómo te ha ayudado tu grupo pequeño o la familia de tu iglesia a aprender a servir sin quemarte ni agotarte?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más? A Fresh Start After Sexual Sin

“If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness.”

1 John 1:9 (NIV)

God’s standards never change: Premarital sex is unacceptable. It always has been. It always will be. Living together without getting married is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be. Adultery—being unfaithful in your marriage—is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be. Pornography is unacceptable to God. It always has been. It always will be.

But if you’ve been guilty of one of those sins, that’s not the end of your story. God gives you a chance to come clean and start over.

How do you do that?

Repent. Repent means “to change your mind.” You say, “You were right, God. I was wrong. What I did was sin.” You don’t rationalize your sin or excuse it. The most important part is, you do this now. If you’re currently in the middle of an affair, end it today.

Receive forgiveness. God is waiting to forgive, cleanse, and restore you. He’ll release you from the shame, regrets, hidden hurts, and pain that come from your sin so you don’t carry them into your next relationship. God wants to wipe the slate clean. The good news is, once he’s forgiven you, you can forgive yourself.

Refocus and replace. You make a commitment to live morally pure by God’s standard from this day forward. That means having sex only with the person you’re married to.

Request help daily. Commit your life to Christ (if you haven’t already). Ask him to help you manage your mind, because you know that your decisions about sex start with the way you think. Don’t just ask him for help for the next week or the next month. Ask him for help every day—even minute by minute as you fight to stay sexually pure.

Your sexual drive can destroy you if you let it. It’s your choice! Choose to repent and receive God’s forgiveness today. God will give you a fresh start and will even bless your future relationship when you follow him in faith.

Talk It Over

If there is a sexual sin from your past that you haven’t repented of, walk through the steps above so that your fresh start can begin today.
How does our culture try to convince you that truth changes?
Why is it important not to carry shame or regret into your next relationship?

Have you committed your life to Christ?

No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. You only need to believe and receive.

Confess your sins and ask God to forgive you. Claim the promise of his grace through Jesus Christ, that salvation is free and open to anyone who turns from their sins and agrees to follow Jesus as their Lord and Savior. Humbly ask God to accept you into his forever family.

Are you ready? Then pray this simple prayer: “Dear God, I know when I die, I’m going to give an account of my life to you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so that I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know it is only be your grace that I can be saved.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You paid for my sins and made me acceptable for heaven, and I accept you as my Lord and Savior. And I believe you will keep your promise to save me instantly, and certainly, and completely, and eternally. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Caminar En Comunidad Con Otros Creyentes

“Después, el Señor Dios dijo: «No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Haré una ayuda ideal para él»”. Génesis 2:18 (NTV)

No puedes convertirte en todo lo que Dios quiere que seas sin otras personas en tu vida.

De hecho, lo primero que Dios dijo a los humanos fue esto: “«No es bueno que el hombre esté solo. Haré una ayuda ideal para él»” Génesis 2:18 (NTV). Dios no está hablando solo del matrimonio en este versículo. Simplemente no es bueno para nosotros tratar de hacer cualquier parte de la vida por nuestra cuenta.

He escuchado a personas decir que la independencia total es la clave de la felicidad. Pero después de aconsejar a miles de personas, puedo decirte que eso es una tontería. La independencia completa de otros humanos no es felicidad, es soledad. Y la forma más rápida de volverte miserable, resentido, temeroso e inseguro, es fingir que no necesitas a nadie más en tu vida.

Necesitas a otros, particularmente a la familia de la iglesia, para que caminen contigo a lo largo de la vida. Una familia física no dura para siempre. Crecen, se separan y se mudan. Pero una familia espiritual, la iglesia, durará para siempre.

Aquí hay tres razones por las que debes caminar en comunidad con otros creyentes:

Es más seguro. ¿Alguna vez has tenido que caminar solo por un callejón oscuro por la noche? ¡Se siente mucho mejor cuando tienes a otras personas contigo! Cuando atraviesas momentos oscuros, es más seguro caminar con otras personas que puedan alentarte y orar contigo. La Biblia dice: “Sin liderazgo sabio, la nación se hunde; la seguridad está en tener muchos consejeros” Proverbios 11:14 (NTV).

Es de apoyo. Te impide rendirte. Si alguna vez te has preparado para un maratón, es posible que te hayas sentido tentado a renunciar porque llegaste a un punto muerto en tu entrenamiento. Pero cuando corres con otras personas, te mantienen en movimiento hacia tu meta y te brindan apoyo.

Es más inteligente. La Biblia dice: “Los que confían en su propia inteligencia son necios, pero el que camina con sabiduría está a salvo” Proverbios 28:26 (NTV). Si caminas solo, es posible que estés caminando en la dirección equivocada. Pero cuando caminas con otras personas, aprendes a escuchar, a llevarte bien y a amar.

Dios creó la comunidad como antídoto contra la soledad. Cuando compartes tu vida con la familia de tu iglesia, el desánimo y la fatiga comienzan a desaparecer.

Reflexiona sobre esto:

Piensa en un momento de tu vida en el cual luchaste con la soledad. ¿Qué te ayudó a avanzar hacia la seguridad de una comunidad solidaria?¿Por qué crees que Dios nos creó para ser mejores juntos?¿Cómo te ha ayudado otro creyente a obtener una perspectiva piadosa cuando te sentías perdido y solo?Si todavía no has confiado en Jesús y no te has comprometido a seguirlo, ¿por qué esperar más?
