You Can’t Change by Accident

“Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life, which is corrupted by lust and deception.”

Ephesians 4:22 (NLT)

Change requires making choices. It’s not enough to dream of changing. It’s not enough to desire change. In order for you to change, you will need to make a decision. You must choose to change.

Change is intentional: Are you going to be any different in six months? Are you going to be better a year from now? Are you going to be healthier, stronger, and more mature? Are you going to be happier? Are you going to be in less debt? Are you going to be more like God wants you to be?

I can tell you the answer right now: It will only happen if you choose to change, because it isn’t going to happen accidentally. You need to think ahead to where you need to be at the end of this year and where you need to be in three years, six years, and a decade from now. I want you to be better in 10 years than you are today, but you won’t be unless you choose to be.

Change requires a choice.

A lot of times we think we’re waiting on God to change us. No, you are not waiting on God. God is waiting on you! He’s waiting on you to say, “Yes, Lord, I’m willing to make these changes.”

We have to make intentional choices in order to grow. There is no growth without change, there is no change without loss, and there is no loss without pain. If you are going to grow, you will have to change, and change means you let go of some old things and grab hold of some new things.

It’s like swinging on a trapeze: The trapeze artist swings out on one bar, and then she has to reach out and grab the other bar. At some point, she’s got to let go of one to grab the other, or she’s not going to make it to the other side. If she thinks she can hold on to both, what happens? She gets stuck in the middle, and she’s going down.

Perhaps you’re stuck in the middle, and you’re going down because you haven’t let go of old patterns, old habits, and old ways of thinking. You have to let go of your old ways.

The Bible says, “Throw off your old sinful nature and your former way of life” (Ephesians 4:22 NLT). In other words, let it go. Those old habits, those old hurts, those old patterns, those old sins in your life—let them go. The Bible says to throw them off and trust that God is working in you “to will and to act in order to fulfill his good purpose” (Philippians 2:13 NIV).

Para Cambiar la forma de Actuar, cambia la forma de Pensar

“Dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes”.  Efesios 4:23 (NTV)

El cambio requiere un nuevo pensamiento. Para cambiar, debemos aprender la verdad y comenzar a tomar buenas decisiones, pero también debemos cambiar nuestra forma de pensar.

La batalla por el pecado comienza en tu mente, no en tu comportamiento. La manera en que piensas determina la forma en que sientes, y la forma en que sientes determina la forma en que actúas. Si quieres cambiar tu forma de actuar, comienza por cambiar tu forma de pensar. Además, si quieres cambiar la forma en que sientes, debes empezar cambiando tu forma de pensar.

Por ejemplo, puedes decir: “Necesito amar más a mis hijos”, pero eso no va a funcionar. No puedes luchar contra tus sentimientos. Debes cambiar la forma en que piensas acerca de tus hijos, de tu esposo, de tu esposa, y eso cambiará tu forma de pensar, lo cual cambiará tu manera de actuar. La Biblia dice: “Dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes” Efesios 4:23 (NTV).

Déjame resumirte de esta manera: Tú no eres lo que crees que eres. Más bien, lo que piensas, que eres. La batalla para lidiar con esos defectos en tu vida que no te gustan comienzan en tu mente. Si quieres cambiar algo en tu comportamiento o algo en tus emociones, comienza con tus pensamientos y tu actitud.

La renovación de tu mente está relacionada con la palabra “arrepentimiento”. Sé que el arrepentimiento es una palabra confusa para mucha gente. Piensan que significa algo que realmente no quieren hacer o algo doloroso. Ellos piensan que es un hombre parado en una esquina de la calle con un aviso que dice: “Arrepiéntete! ¡El mundo está a punto de terminar!”.

El arrepentimiento no tiene nada que ver con tu comportamiento. Se trata de aprender a pensar de manera diferente. “Arrepentirse” significa simplemente hacer un giro mental. Es algo que haces en tu mente, no con tu comportamiento. Cambiar la forma en que piensas afectará tus emociones y tu comportamiento.

Cuando me arrepiento, vuelvo de la culpa al perdón. Cambio el Infierno por el Cielo. Cambio de una vida sin propósito a una vida con propósito. Paso de no tener esperanza a una nueva esperanza. Paso de la frustración a la libertad. ¡Me vuelvo de la oscuridad a la luz!

Ese es el tipo de cambio que necesito para poder cambiar el resto de mi vida.

¿Qué estás viendo o escuchando que afecta tu manera de pensar? ¿Ayudan esas cosas con la renovación de tu mente?
¿Qué le dices a Dios cuando te arrepientes?
¿Cómo puedes cambiar la forma en que piensas acerca de tus relaciones para que sientas más amor hacia las personas en tu vida?

God Wants Whatever You’ve Got

“‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do.”

John 6:5-6 (NIV)

Do you remember the story of Jesus feeding 5,000 people with only five loaves of bread and two fish? I think it’s amazing that, out of 5,000 people, only one person brought a lunch. I’m thinking a lot of people were hiding picnic baskets under their robes because they didn’t want to share with anybody else.

But one little boy offered the bread and fish he packed for his lunch. He gave Jesus what little he had, and God used it not to just feed a lot of people but also to show them how much he cares and how powerful he is.

God always starts with what you have. You may not have much time. Your finances may not be worth much. You may not think you have much talent.

But you can give God everything in your life. Give him your heart. Give him your reputation. Give him your past, present, and future. It may not be much, but you can give him your five loaves and two fish.

In John 6:5-6 Jesus asks, “‘Where shall we buy bread for these people to eat?’ He asked this only to test him, for he already had in mind what he was going to do” (NIV).

Jesus wasn’t worried about how to feed 5,000 people. He already had in mind what he was going to do. He saw the need long before the disciples did. And he had a plan.

You need to understand this truth today: God always has the answer before you even know the problem. God is not worried your unsolvable problem. It’s not too late in the day for Jesus. He saw your problem long before you did. He knew it was coming, and he already had a plan for it. God knows the solution to your problem before you even recognize it’s a problem.

So why are you worrying? Just admit you have an unsolvable problem, and then give God everything you have. Watch him take your loaves and fish and turn them into a feast.

El Cambio Requiere que Tomes una Decisión

“Desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño”.  Efesios 4:22 (NTV)

El cambio requiere tomar decisiones. No basta con soñar con cambiar. No es suficiente con el deseo de cambio. Para que tú puedas cambiar, tendrás que tomar una decisión. Debes elegir cambiar.

El cambio es intencional: ¿vas a ser diferente en seis meses? ¿vas a ser mejor dentro de un año? ¿vas a ser más saludable, más fuerte y más maduro? ¿vas a ser más feliz? ¿vas a estar menos endeudado? ¿vas a ser más como Dios quiere que seas?

Puedo darte la respuesta ahora mismo: sólo sucederá si tú eliges cambiar, porque no va a suceder accidentalmente. Quiero que seas mejor en 10 años de lo que eres ahora, pero no lo serás a menos que elijas serlo.

Requiere una elección.

Muchas veces creemos que debemos esperar que Dios nos cambie. No. No estás esperando a Dios. ¡Dios te está esperando a ti! Él está esperando que digas: “sí, aquí estoy Señor, dispuesto a hacer estos cambios”.

Tenemos que hacer elecciones intencionales para crecer. No hay crecimiento sin cambio, no hay cambio sin pérdida, y no hay pérdida sin dolor. Si vas a crecer, tendrás que cambiar, y el cambio significa dejar ir algunas cosas viejas con el fin de obtener algunas cosas nuevas.

Es como balancearse en un trapecio: el artista de trapecio oscila en una barra, y luego tiene que extender la mano y tomar la otra. En algún momento, tiene que soltar una para tomar la otra, o no vas a llegar al otro lado. Si piensas que puedes aferrarte a ambas, ¿qué sucede? Te quedas atrapado en el medio, y te caes.

Algunos de ustedes están atrapados en el centro, y van a caer porque no han abandonado los viejos patrones, los viejos hábitos y las viejas maneras de pensar. Tienes que dejar de lado tus viejas costumbres.

La Biblia dice: “Desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño”  Efesios 4:22 (NTV). En otras palabras, déjalo ir. Esos viejos hábitos, esas viejas heridas, esos viejos patrones, esos viejos pecados en tu vida —déjalos ir. La Biblia dice que los desechen y confíen en que Dios está obrando en ustedes “y les da el deseo y el poder para que hagan lo que a él le agrada” Filipenses 2:13b (NVI).

¿Qué cambio has querido hacer en tu vida, pero has estado esperando que Dios lo haga por ti?
¿Cómo crees que Dios quiere que sigas adelante con ese cambio? ¿Qué pasos prácticos necesitas tomar?
¿Cómo quieres que tu vida sea diferente dentro de un año? ¿Qué se necesita para lograr ese objetivo?

Grow, Sow, and Go in Faith

“Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness.”

Colossians 2:7 (NLT)

God wants you to focus on growing, sowing, and going in faith.

First, God wants you to grow in faith. He doesn’t want you to be a spiritual baby. The Bible says in Colossians 2:7: “Let your roots grow down into him, and let your lives be built on him. Then your faith will grow strong in the truth you were taught, and you will overflow with thankfulness” (NLT).

God also wants you to sow in faith. He wants you to learn to become generous—because you cannot become like Christ without becoming generous. The Bible says, “Remember this: Whoever sows sparingly will also reap sparingly, and whoever sows generously will also reap generously” (2 Corinthians 9:6 NIV).

This is the law of sowing and reaping, and it’s true in every area of life. If you sow criticism, you’re going to reap criticism. If you sow love, you’ll reap love. If you sow kindness, you will reap kindness. And you always reap more than you sow. When you plant one corn kernel in the ground, you don’t get one kernel back. You get a whole stalk. You always get back more—positive or negative—of what you put out in life.

Then, God wants you to go in faith.

Hebrews 11:8 says, “It was by faith Abraham obeyed God’s call to go to another place God promised to give him. He left his own country, not knowing where he was to go” (NCV).

Would you do that? Abraham was in his retirement phase, just about to hang it up and settle down. Then God said, “No, dust yourself off, and get ready for the greatest journey of your life.” When you live by faith, it involves going, often to places you were never planning to go.

Why is it so important for you to develop your faith? The Bible explains it over and over again:

“Without faith it is impossible to please God” (Hebrews 11:6 NIV).

“Let it be done for you according to your faith” (Matthew 9:29 CSB).

“Anything that is not done in faith is sin” (Romans 14:23 GW). 

Everything God does in your life is does by his grace and through your faith.

La Verdad te hará Libre

“Ya que han oído sobre Jesús y han conocido la verdad que procede de él, desháganse de su vieja naturaleza pecaminosa y de su antigua manera de vivir, que está corrompida por la sensualidad y el engaño. En cambio, dejen que el Espíritu les renueve los pensamientos y las actitudes. Pónganse la nueva naturaleza, creada para ser a la semejanza de Dios, quien es verdaderamente justo y santo. Así que dejen de decir mentiras. Digamos siempre la verdad a todos porque nosotros somos miembros de un mismo cuerpo”.  Efesios 4:21-25 (NTV)

El secreto del cambio personal no es la fuerza de voluntad. El secreto es conocer y enfrentar la verdad. Si quieres cambiar algo en tu vida, debes saber y enfrentar la verdad sobre ti mismo, tus relaciones y tu propia naturaleza.

¿Por qué es necesario aprender la verdad antes de que algo pueda cambiar en tu vida? Porque detrás de cada hábito auto-destructivo en tu vida, hay una mentira en la que crees. Si te endeudas, es porque creías algunas mentiras como “puedo gastar y después lo arreglo” o “siempre puedo pagarlo”. Tú podrías haber sobrestimado lo mucho que iba a hacer, o creer la mentira que necesitabas una casa mucho más grande.

¿Pero tú? ¿Estás seguro de que es la verdad? ¿Puedes probar que es la verdad? ¿Estás absolutamente seguro de que lo que crees que has dicho sobre tus finanzas es cierto? ¿Qué pasa con tus relaciones? ¿Qué pasa con las cosas que te dices a ti mismo? ¿Es la forma en que piensas acerca de tu pasado o acerca de algún evento, o es la verdad de lo que Dios dice al respecto?

La Biblia enseña que el cambio personal comienza con la verdad. ¡Es la verdad lo que te hace libre! El Apóstol Pablo dice: “ Ya que han oído sobre Jesús y han conocido la verdad que procede de él… ” Efesios 4:21 (NTV). ¿Quién es la verdad? La verdad es Jesús, y debido a que Jesús es la verdad, Él siempre te dirá la verdad. Su Palabra es la verdad. La Biblia es su Palabra, y eso significa que la Biblia es la verdad (2 Timoteo 3:16-17).

Lo que oyes en la televisión o lees en los libros no siempre te va a ayudar, porque no siempre es la verdad, ¿te has dado cuenta de esto? Pero lo que Dios te dice siempre va a ser la verdad. La Palabra de Dios te muestra cómo regresar a la vida para la cual fuiste creado para vivir, y luego te muestra cómo permanecer en el camino de Dios.

Por eso es tan importante que tengas todos los días, un tiempo a solas con Dios y Su Palabra, el cambio requiere aprender la verdad. Si tú construyes tu vida sobre una base de mentiras, conceptos erróneos, engaños o verdades a medias, nunca cambiarás. Pero cuando enfrentes la verdad y respondas a la verdad, comenzarás a ver cambios en tu vida.

What Faith Does to Your Dreams

“Glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes.”

Ephesians 3:20 (TLB)

Through faith, God-given dreams become reality. Nothing happens until dreams and faith start working together!

The Bible is full of people who had God-given dreams. Abraham dreamed of being the father of a great nation. Moses dreamed of setting God’s people free. Joseph dreamed of saving a nation and his own family. Throughout Scripture, all kinds of people were inspiring dreamers, including, Daniel, Paul, and David.

Ephesians 3:20 says, “Glory be to God, who by his mighty power at work within us is able to do far more than we would ever dare to ask or even dream of—infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, or hopes” (TLB).

Now, if there were ever a “blank check” verse in the Bible, that’s it. God is able to do far more than you would dare to ask. What are you afraid to ask God for? He can do far more than you can even dream of.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a pretty big dreamer. However, dreams are nothing compared to what God has planned for my life. God says, “Rick, think of the greatest thing you could ever dream of, the greatest thing you think I could do in your life. Guess what? I can top that.”

If you were to cry when you arrived in heaven, those tears would simply be for all the things you could have done if you had just believed God a little bit more. To me that would be hell—being shown everything I could have accomplished and become as a husband, father, and pastor if I had just believed God a little bit more.

But there aren’t any tears in heaven, and God gives you everything you need right now to accomplish what he has planned for you. So dream big about your relationships, marriage, family, and career. Your faith can turn those dreams into reality.

God is able to do far more than you would dare to ask or even dream of.

Puedes estar Seguro de quién Eres

“Jesús se dirigió a la gente, y les dijo: Yo soy la luz del mundo. El que me sigue no andará en tinieblas, sino que tendrá la luz de la vida”.  Juan 8:12 (NVI)

Cuando Jesús dijo: “Yo soy la luz del mundo”, se estaba definiendo a sí mismo. Él estaba diciendo: “Yo sé quién soy”. Al menos 18 veces en la Biblia, Jesús dijo, “Yo soy” y luego dio una descripción. Se describió a sí mismo como la puerta, el pan de vida, el camino, la verdad, la resurrección y la vida. Una y otra vez se definió a sí mismo.

Jesús sabía quién era (y aún lo es) y, como resultado, Él nunca estaba bajo presión.

Este es el principio de la identidad. Mientras no estés seguro de tu identidad, vas a ser presionado para que encajes en los moldes de otras personas. Te manipularán, ellos tratarán de convertirte en lo que piensan que debes ser, en lugar de lo que Dios quiere que seas.

Una de las principales causas de estrés proviene de tratar de ser alguien que no eres. Cuando tienes miedo de que alguien vaya a descubrir lo que realmente eres y que no puedes ser capaz de mantener la fachada, esto te causa estrés.

La única manera en que puedes contrarrestar las presiones externas es tener un sentido interno de satisfacción sobre quién eres y para qué te hizo Dios. Descubrirás quién eres, cuando sepas de quién eres.

La Biblia dice que fuiste creado por Dios y eres profundamente amado por Él. Eres aceptado tal y como eres y Él tiene un plan para tu vida. Hasta que no resuelvas este problema de la identidad, serás inseguro y serás presionado por el estrés. No puedes servir a otras personas hasta que resuelvas este problema.

Jesús constantemente hacía cosas que sorprendían a todos los demás. Puso a los demás antes que a Él y les sirvió. A ninguno de los otros discípulos se le habría ocurrido que se lavaran los pies en el Cenáculo por su inseguridad. Pero Jesús siempre sirvió desde una posición firme. Él sabía quién era y a quien le pertenecía, así que no le importaba humillarse para servirles.

Servirle a alguien proviene de la autoestima. Hasta no superar tu inseguridad y sentirte bien contigo mismo, no tendrás ganas de ayudar a nadie más. Mantén tu seguridad en quién eres y a quien le perteneces, para poder servir eficazmente a los demás.

¿Cuál es la diferencias entre lo que el mundo y los demás dicen de ti y lo que tú crees que Dios dice acerca de ti?
¿Qué significa servir desde una posición firme?
¿Por qué servimos más eficazmente cuando estamos seguros de nuestra identidad en Cristo?

Your Faith Can Move Mountains

“Have faith in God! If you have faith in God and don’t doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. Everything you ask for in prayer will be yours, if you only have faith.”

Mark 11:22-24 (CEV)

Faith opens the door to miracles. If you study the Bible and history, you’ll find that every time God moves on earth and does a miracle, it’s because somebody believes.

Jesus said in Mark 11:22-24, “Have faith in God! If you have faith in God and don’t doubt, you can tell this mountain to get up and jump into the sea, and it will. Everything you ask for in prayer will be yours, if you only have faith” (CEV).

Faith can move mountains!

God has set up the universe in a hierarchy of laws. The law of faith is actually higher than the laws of nature. That’s where miracles come in. When someone has faith, the law of faith goes into practice and can actually do more than the laws of nature. The law of faith makes miracles happen.

Does God still perform miracles today? Of course he does. Every time you stretch your faith, God does miracles—every single time.

My question for you is this: What mountain in your life needs to be moved? What’s the thing that seems like it can never change? Maybe God wants your faith to supersede the laws of nature to move that mountain.

God is in the mountain-moving business. He has moved them in the past. He is moving them today all around the world. Do not doubt or underestimate what he wants to do in your life too.

Matthew 13:58 says, “[Jesus] did not do many miracles there because of their lack of faith” (NIV).

You might say, “I don’t see many miracles in my life.” Are you looking with eyes of fear, or are you looking with eyes of faith?

Let 2021 be the year when you see faith open the door to miracles.

Todo Cristiano es un Ministro

“Ustedes también son como piedras vivas que Dios utiliza para construir un templo espiritual”.  1 Pedro 2:5a (PDT)

Dios dice que eres un sacerdote. Dependiendo de tus antecedentes, eso puede ser aterrador o confuso. Pedro dice que los dos beneficios que tienen los sacerdotes están disponibles para todos los creyentes.

En el antiguo testamento, los sacerdotes hacían dos cosas:

Tenían el privilegio, derecho y responsabilidad de ir directamente a Dios. Ellos podían orar y hablar con Dios, adorar y tener compañerismo con Dios. Todos los demás tenían que acudir al sacerdote.
El sacerdote tenía el privilegio y responsabilidad de representar las personas ante Dios y ministrar las necesidades de otras personas (servicio).

Esas dos cosas se vuelven realidad cuando te conviertes en un creyente.

Ahora tienes acceso directo a Dios. No tienes que orar a través de nadie más. No tienes que confesarte ante Dios a través de nadie más. No tienes que tener compañerismo con Dios a través de nadie más. Puedes leer la Biblia, hablar con Dios, y tener compañerismo directamente con Él.

La Biblia dice que cuando Jesús murió en la cruz, había un velo en el tempo que separaba lo Santo de lo Sagrado, separaba donde estaba el Espíritu de Dios de donde estaba el hombre. Solo el sumo sacerdote podía ir detrás del velo una vez al año. Cuando Jesús murió en la cruz, Dios rompió ese velo —aproximadamente 21 metros— de arriba hasta abajo, simbolizando que ya no había ninguna barrera.

También tienes el don del ministerio para servir a otras personas. Cada cristiano es un ministro —no un pastor, sino un ministro. Cada vez que usas tus talentos y dones para ayudar a otros, estás ministrando.

“Pues Dios nos salvó y nos llamó para vivir una vida santa. No lo hizo porque lo mereciéramos, sino porque ese era su plan desde antes del comienzo del tiempo” 2 Timoteo 1:9a (NTV). ¿Por qué te salvó Dios? Para que pudieras servirle. Un cristiano que no sirve es una contradicción.

¿Cómo saber cuál es tu ministerio? Mira tus talentos, dones y habilidades. Cuando usas esos talentos y dones para ayudar a otras personas, a eso se le llama ministerio —nada lujoso o aterrador. Sólo es ayudar a otros. ¿Puedes ser un ministro en el departamento de ventas?  ¿Puedes ser un ministro como contador? Por supuesto. ¿Conduciendo un camión? claro que si. Cada vez que estás ayudando a otras personas en el nombre de Dios, estás ministrando.
