No Dejes que el Orgullo Sea tu Guía

“No hagan nada por egoísmo o vanidad; más bien, con humildad consideren a los demás como superiores a ustedes mismos”. Filipenses 2:3 (NVI)

Cada conflicto que se vive en una relación tiene el elemento del orgullo en el medio. Tenemos un problema de “yo”. “Yo” quiero lo que “yo” quiero y “yo” lo quiero ahora, y eso causa todo tipo de problemas. En cualquier relación, nunca dejes que el orgullo sea tu guía, porque el orgullo es la raíz de cualquier otro pecado.

La Biblia dice en Filipenses 2:3: “No hagan nada por egoísmo o vanidad; más bien, con humildad consideren a los demás como superiores a ustedes mismos” (NVI). Pablo dice que hay dos tipos de orgullo que crean conflictos. Uno de ellos es la ambición egoísta y el otro es la vanidad. La ambición egoísta dice: “Todo gira en torno a mí” y la vanidad significa: “Siempre tengo la razón”.

La ambición egoísta causa todo tipo de problemas. Santiago 3:16 dice: “Donde hay envidias y ambiciones egoístas, también habrá desorden y toda clase de maldad” (NTV). Cuando encuentres confusión en tu lugar de trabajo, en tu iglesia, en tu hogar, en tu matrimonio e incluso en el gobierno, puedes saber que la ambición egoísta y los celos lo están causando.

La vanidad es la actitud de que uno siempre tiene la razón. La nueva traducción viviente de Filipenses 2:3 dice: “no traten de impresionar a nadie”. Hacemos esto en todas las áreas de nuestra vida, pero especialmente en las redes sociales. Es una gran tentación hacer que uno se vea mejor en Internet de lo que es.

En Gálatas, Pablo enumera unos 17 efectos de vivir con orgullo. Dice que cuando vivimos una vida egocéntrica, se manifiesta de todo tipo de maneras. Comienza diciendo cosas como que la autosatisfacción se manifiesta en la inmoralidad sexual y en las fiestas desenfrenadas y en las borracheras. Es de esperar esas cosas.

Pero la mayoría de las cosas de la lista son en realidad pecados en las relaciones. Gálatas 5:19-21 dice: “Cuando ustedes siguen los deseos de la naturaleza pecaminosa, los resultados son más que claros: …peleas, celos, arrebatos de furia, ambición egoísta, discordias, divisiones, envidia… Permítanme repetirles lo que les dije antes: cualquiera que lleve esa clase de vida no heredará el reino de Dios” (NTV).

Si quieres ser feliz en tus relaciones, tienes que tener armonía. Y si vas a tener armonía, tienes que tener humildad. Nunca dejes que el orgullo sea tu guía.

How Do You Develop Spiritual Roots?

“The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don’t have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up."

Luke 8:13 (CEV)

During the springtime, all the grass in Southern California turns green, the wildflowers and poppies bloom, and it’s beautiful. But the moment the rains stop, the hills turn brown again. Why? Because the grass has shallow roots. The roots can’t go down deep enough to get water from the springs that are deep beneath the ground.

When a plant has shallow roots, it may initially sprout and look good, but it withers quickly and doesn’t last. It’s the same for your spiritual life. To grow through any season, you need deep roots.

Luke 8:13 says, “The seeds that fell on rocky ground are the people who gladly hear the message and accept it. But they don’t have deep roots, and they believe only for a little while. As soon as life gets hard, they give up” (CEV).

Sometimes you may hear God’s Word and get excited about it without allowing it to change you. You act superficially. You react emotionally. You’re moved impulsively. But you don’t take the time to let it sink in.

Do you really want to be that way? No! You want to be a deep person, not a shallow person. You want to be a person with deep spiritual roots so that when recession comes and lasts several years, you’re able to keep bearing fruit. When the rough winds come and somebody in your family gets sick or a close friend dies, the trial doesn’t blow you away, because you’ve got roots.

How do you develop spiritual roots? You do it by having a daily time with God and a weekly small group time with other believers. You’ve got to spend time alone with God, and you’ve got to spend time with other believers.

If you’re not spending time with God daily, you’re going to dry up and blow away when the pressure is on. You won’t be able to handle it. You need to make time to listen during a daily time with God. Sit and be quiet. Read the Bible and talk to God. Play some music. If you like to journal, do that. Do whatever it takes for you to keep your focus on God.

You also need a weekly small group. No one has a complete perspective on life. Everyone wears blinders. The people in your small group can see things in your life you can’t see. That’s why we need each other! You learn from the people in your small group as you encourage each other and your roots go deeper.

Sooner or later, life will throw hard things your way. The question is whether you’ll have the deep roots you need to survive and even thrive through those times.

Hábito de la Felicidad: Dar tu Vida

“Porque para mí el vivir es Cristo y el morir es ganancia”. Filipenses 1:21 (NVI)

La felicidad viene del servicio y de dar tu vida. Hasta que no entiendas esto, no vas a ser feliz durante gran parte de tu vida. La felicidad no viene de la auto gratificación. Viene del auto sacrificio.

Pablo sabía que, para ser feliz, él tenía que mantenerse enfocado en su propósito y no en sus problemas. Él asumió su propósito en Filipenses 1:21 “Porque para mí el vivir es Cristo y el morir es ganancia” (NVI).

Si te pidieran escribir en la línea en blanco, ¿Qué dirías? “Para mí el vivir es ______”. ¿Sería entretenimiento? ¿Deportes? ¿Ropa? ¿Familia? ¿Amigos? ¿Una carrera? Habría muchas cosas buenas que podrías contestar, pero nada merece el lugar de aquel quién te creó y te dio la vida: Jesucristo.

De la manera cómo llenes ese espacio en blanco determinará que tan feliz serás en la vida. Si respondes “dinero” o “éxito” o “placer” o “poder”, vas a ser infeliz gran parte de tu vida. El problema no es que esas cosas sean malas; sino que no merecen estar en el primer lugar. Tú no fuiste creado para hacer mucho dinero, luego morir, y dejarlo todo. Dios tiene un propósito mucho más grande para tu vida. Hay solo una respuesta que te lleva a la felicidad: Vivir es Cristo. Dar tu vida. ¡Es tu propósito!

Te invito a hacer esta oración hoy: “Señor Jesús, tú sabes que a menudo yo permito que las circunstancias determinen mi felicidad. Tú sabes que a menudo permito que cosas como el dolor, los problemas, las presiones y las personas difíciles roben mi felicidad. Ayúdame a ver cada problema en mi vida desde tu punto de vista. Quiero manejar los problemas de una manera que sea un testimonio para los que no te conocen y un ejemplo para los creyentes. Ayúdame a recordar que lo que otros dicen y hacen no controlan mi felicidad a menos que yo lo permita. Y por las cosas que suceden que no puedo entender o resolver, quiero confiar en que Tú sacarás bien de ellas. Ayúdame a mantenerme enfocado en tu propósito para mi vida y no estar enfocado en mis problemas. Quiero usar el resto de mi vida para servirte al servir a otros. Úsame, Señor, para tener un propósito para vivir y para morir. Desde este día en adelante, para mí el vivir es Cristo. En tu nombre te pido esto. Amén”.

Three Barriers to Hearing God’s Voice

“Get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls."

James 1:21 (NLT)

What do God’s voice and cell phones have in common? For both, you have to be positioned correctly to hear them clearly!

Reception quality with your cell phone varies widely. In a big, sturdy building, your coverage may be spotty. In a wilderness area, you’ll likely have no cell service at all. You have to be in the right position to have a clear, reliable signal.

The same is true with your relationship with God. If you want to hear God’s voice clearly and consistently, you must be positioned correctly.

What does it look like to be in the wrong position to hear God? When you’re in the wrong position, your mind is closed—you want to do what you want, not what God wants. In the wrong position, your heart is hardened—you’re unwilling to listen.

What keeps your heart hard and mind closed to God? Here are three barriers that keep you closed to God’s message:

1. Pride. If you think you don’t need God in your life and you want to handle things yourself, you’re probably not listening for God to speak. Pride keeps you from being open to the possibility that God might want to say something to you.

2. Fear. Many people can’t hear God because they’re afraid to hear God speak. You might think that hearing God’s voice or sensing his leading makes you some kind of religious fanatic. Or maybe you’re afraid of the changes you’d need to make in your life if you listened to God’s leading.

3. Bitterness. When you hold on to hurt, resentment, or a grudge, you’re not able to hear God—because your heart is hardened. A hard heart grows cold and makes you defensive, even to God’s love.

James 1:21 says, “Get rid of all the filth and evil in your lives, and humbly accept the word God has planted in your hearts, for it has the power to save your souls” (NLT).

It’s time to get rid of the bitterness, fear, and pride that keep you from hearing God’s voice and living out his purpose for your life. Then you’ll be able to hear God with and open heart and mind and “humbly accept” what he’s saying to you.

Enfócate en tu Propósito, no en el Problema

“Pero si vivo, puedo realizar más labor fructífera para Cristo. Así que realmente no sé qué es mejor. Estoy dividido entre dos deseos: quisiera partir y estar con Cristo, lo cual sería mucho mejor para mí; pero por el bien de ustedes, es mejor que siga viviendo. Al estar consciente de esto, estoy convencido de que seguiré con vida para continuar ayudándolos a todos ustedes a crecer y a experimentar la alegría de su fe”. Filipenses 1:22-25 (NTV)

Cuando te mantienes enfocado en tu propósito en lugar de tu problema, puedes ser feliz aun cuando la vida parece estar desmoronándose.

Pablo era un hombre viejo cuando estaba en prisión en Roma. Él estaba lejos de casa. Estaba esperando su ejecución. Todo se le había quitado —sus amigos, su libertad, su ministerio, incluso su privacidad, con un guardia encadenado a él las 24 horas del día. No era exactamente un tiempo feliz para Pablo.

Pero había una cosa que ellos no podían quitarle: Su propósito. Pablo tomo la decisión de mantenerse enfocado en su propósito, aun cuando había perdido todo lo demás. ¿Cuál era su propósito? Servir a Dios al servir a otros.

Pablo dijo en Filipenses 1:22-25 “Pero si vivo, puedo realizar más labor fructífera para Cristo. Así que realmente no sé qué es mejor. Estoy dividido entre dos deseos: quisiera partir y estar con Cristo, lo cual sería mucho mejor para mí; pero por el bien de ustedes, es mejor que siga viviendo. Nunca olvidaré cuando leí el libro de Víctor Frankl “El hombre en busca de sentido”. Frankl era un psiquiatra judío quien fue llevado a uno de los campos de concentración en la Alemania Nazi. Toda su familia y todos sus amigos fueron asesinados con gas. Él habla en su libro sobre el día que él se mantuvo frente a los oficiales Nazis completamente desnudo. Ellos se habían llevado las ropas de los prisioneros, incluso el anillo de bodas de Frankl. Mientras se mantenía ahí sin hacer nada, de repente se dio cuenta que había una cosa que los Nazis no podían quitarle: Su elección de cómo responder.

No puedes controlar totalmente lo que otros te hacen. No puedes controlar totalmente lo que otros hacen a tu alrededor. Pero puedes controlar como respondes.

Four Ways God Answers Persistent Prayer

“Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers."

Ephesians 6:18 (NLT)

There is no such thing as unanswered prayer. God may not always answer the way you like, but he always answers prayer in one of four ways:

When your request is not right, God says, “No.”

God is not going to give you something that’s harmful for you. He only gives you his best! He sometimes says “no” because your request does not match his best for you.

When you’re not right, God says, “Grow.”

Maybe God wants to give you something—maybe even a blessing so big you can’t imagine it—but you’re not ready for the responsibility. It could even cause stress in your life if he gave it to you now. Don’t stop praying! Keep reading God’s Word and making Christ your first pursuit.

When the timing’s not right, God says, “Slow.”

Habakkuk 2:3 says, “The time approaches when the vision will be fulfilled. If it seems slow, do not despair, for these things will surely come to pass. Just be patient! They will not be overdue a single day!” (TLB) It’s coming, but it’s not here yet. God wants to take it slow, until you’re ready to handle it. Growth often needs to be paced. And it always takes time.

When your request and the timing and your character are all lined up, God says, “Go.”

Ephesians 6:18 says, “Pray in the Spirit at all times and on every occasion. Stay alert and be persistent in your prayers” (NLT). You don’t pray persistently because you’re trying to convince God. You pray persistently so that you’re ready when God says, “Go.”

Always believe that God is going to answer your prayer. It might not always be the answer you want or expect, but it will always be for your good and for God’s glory.

Decide Regocijarte

“Y seguiré gozándome porque sé que la oración de ustedes y la ayuda del Espíritu de Jesucristo darán como resultado mi libertad”. Filipenses 1:18-19 (NTV)

Cuando las cosas se desmoronan, no intentes resolverlo solo. Permítele a Dios volver a colocar todas las piezas juntas.

Si estás enfrentando un problema, tienes dos opciones: Puedes adorar o puedes preocuparte.

Pablo dijo en Filipenses 1:18-19, “Y seguiré gozándome porque sé que la oración de ustedes y la ayuda del Espíritu de Jesucristo darán como resultado mi libertad” (NTV).

En esta Escritura, Pablo revela algunas fuentes de fortaleza para mantenerte positivo y feliz en tiempos difíciles. Primero, tienes que mantener la perspectiva de Dios sobre tus problemas. Pablo dijo, “porque sé” es lo que sabes lo que te mantiene activo. Pablo sabía que Dios estaba trabajando en medio de sus batallas, y él mantuvo la perspectiva de Dios.

Segundo, Pablo tuvo a personas orando por él, y eso lo hacía continuar. Entonces él dijo, “y la ayuda del espíritu de Jesucristo”. El Espíritu Santo también mantenía a Pablo avanzando. Finalmente él dijo “darán como resultado mi libertad”. Pablo tuvo fe que Dios trabajaría en su problema para bien.

Debido a que Pablo tuvo la perspectiva de Dios, la oración de amigos, el Espíritu Santo y la fe, decidió “seguir gozándose”.

Persistent Prayer Reveals Your Priorities

“These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need."

Matthew 6:32-33 (NLT)

When you pray for something more than once, you’re not convincing God to do it. He is already waiting to give it to you! He just wants to know what’s really important to you.

Praying persistently tests your priorities. If it’s not worth praying about repeatedly, then it isn’t a priority.

Do you want to know what’s important to you? It’s whatever you worry about most. Worry tells you what’s important in your life. If you worry about it, it’s important to you. If you don’t worry about it, then either you’ve entrusted it to God, or it’s not that important to you.

Every time you start to worry, you should stop and turn the worry into a prayer. If you prayed about everything you worried about, you’d have a lot less to worry about. Worry won’t change anything. But prayer can change everything!

Jesus says in the Sermon on the Mount, “These things dominate the thoughts of unbelievers, but your heavenly Father already knows all your needs. Seek the Kingdom of God above all else, and live righteously, and he will give you everything you need” (Matthew 6:32-33 NLT).

When your priorities are right, God’s answer is “yes.” He’ll give you all you need if your first concern is to live for his kingdom.

You may be saying, “I’m waiting on God to answer this prayer.” Are you waiting on God, or is he waiting on you? Maybe he wants to test your desire and priorities. He wants to know what’s most important in your life before he gives you an answer.

The Bible promises, “The LORD will withhold no good thing from those who do what is right” (Psalm 84:11 NLT).

When you’re living for Jesus—when you’re giving him your attention and staying connected to him—then he is ready to give you what your heart desires.

God won’t hold back any of his goodness!

Eres tan Feliz como Decidas Ser

“Pero eso no importa; porque, sean sinceros o no, están anunciando el mensaje de Cristo, y eso me hace sentirme muy feliz. Y más feliz me sentiré”. Filipenses 1:18 (TLA)

Pocas cosas roban tu felicidad más rápido que ser criticado o sentir que otros están trabajando en tu contra. ¿Por qué? Porque todos queremos ser amados. Todos queremos aprobación. Todos queremos gustarle a la gente.

Sin embargo, Pablo dice en Filipenses 1:18: “Pero eso no importa; porque, sean sinceros o no, están anunciando el mensaje de Cristo, y eso me hace sentirme muy feliz. Y más feliz me sentiré” (TLA).

No necesitas la aprobación de otras personas para ser feliz.

¡Eres tan feliz como decidas serlo!  Si otros no están contentos contigo, esa es su elección.  Si hasta ahora no has obtenido la aprobación de alguien, probablemente no la obtendrás. Y vas a ser miserable si intentas vivir para la aprobación de todos los demás.

Más tarde, Pablo explica en los versículos 29 y 30 por qué puedes ser feliz sin importar lo que sea: “Pues a ustedes se les dio no solo el privilegio de confiar en Cristo sino también el privilegio de sufrir por él.  Estamos juntos en esta lucha. Ustedes han visto mi lucha en el pasado y saben que aún no ha terminado” (NTV).

Pablo dice que es un privilegio sufrir cuando estás haciendo lo correcto porque te pareces más a Jesús cuando enfrentas oposición y rechazo.

Puedes ser feliz pase lo que pase, si miras cada problema desde el punto de vista de Dios y nunca dejas que lo que otras personas dicen o hacen controlen tu felicidad.

Praying for Your Deepest Desires

“Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires."

Psalm 37:4 (NLT)

Persistent prayer tests your desires. When you start praying for a breakthrough, you’re going to find that your prayer evolves and develops as you hone in on what you really want.

Everybody has desires. The reason you have desires is because God put them in you. All God’s gifts are good, but a desire can be misused, abused, and perverted. Fire is good in the fireplace, but fire in the wrong place can burn a house down.

There are good desires in your life, and there are bad ones too. There are appropriate and inappropriate desires in your life, helpful and harmful, constructive and destructive. When you pray persistently, your desires are filtered, and God reveals which desires are good and which are not.

Persistent praying also shows the difference between a whim and deep desire. If you ask God for something just one time, that’s not a deep desire. It’s just a whim. God is not in the business of fulfilling your every whim. As your heavenly Father, he is more interested in taking care of your deepest desires.

Ultimately, God does want to give you your desires. But he just wants to make sure that he’s your first desire and everything else is secondary. As you pray persistently, your heart is turned more and more toward God and the things he loves. Then you begin to desire those things that honor God and keep him first in your heart. There is almost nothing that God won’t do for the woman or man who puts God first in every area of their life.

The Bible promises, “Take delight in the LORD, and he will give you your heart’s desires” (Psalm 37:4 NLT).

God is not stingy. He’s waiting on you to ask! Delight yourself in the Lord. Give him your attention as you pray persistently and filter out the whims so that you are praying your deepest desires.
