Instead of Grumbling, Give Thanks

“Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.”

1 Thessalonians 5:18 (NIV)

Fretting and fighting over the small stuff will always cause you to lose your happiness.

This is a hard habit to break because people are negative by nature and conditioned by culture.  Ever since Adam and Eve, we have been going around excusing and accusing. We excuse ourselves for the mistakes we make, and we also accuse everybody else for our mistakes.

We say, “If I just had a different spouse, then I’d be happy. If I had just never gotten married, then I’d be happy. If I just had children, then I’d be happy. If my children would leave home, then I would be happy.”

That’s “when and then” thinking. But you are as happy as you choose to be! You can’t blame anybody else for your unhappiness because happiness is a choice. You have to stop excusing and accusing; you have to stop fretting and fighting over the small stuff.

The Bible says, “Do everything without grumbling or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure” (Philippians 2:14-15 NIV).

Those may be some of the most difficult verses in the Bible. But the scariest verse in the Bible to me is Matthew 12:36, where Jesus says, “And I tell you that on the Judgment Day people will be responsible for every careless thing they have said” (NCV).  

That ought to send shivers up your spine. How many times have you complained, grumbled, or argued about something when you shouldn’t have been sweating the small stuff? The first law of life is this: Don’t sweat the small stuff.  Law number two is this: It’s almost all small stuff!

The Bible says in 1 Thessalonians 5:18, “Give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus” (NIV).

Study after study has shown that gratitude is the healthiest attitude.

What do you have to be thankful for? Remember, no matter what is going on in your life, God is always with you, God is always in you, and God is always for you.

That’s cause for gratitude, not grumbling.

Talk It Over

Are you ready to join God’s family?

God made you to love you, and one of the places you see that most clearly is on the cross. Through Jesus’ death and resurrection, God made it possible for you to become part of his family for eternity. No matter what you’ve done or where you’ve been, you’ve got a place in God’s forever family ready and waiting for you. The invitation is wide open. Just believe and receive.

Are you ready? Here’s a prayer you can start with: “Dear God, I know when I die, I’m going to give an account of my life to you. I know I have sinned against you, and I have lived by my plan, not yours. I want that to change, starting right now. I want to turn away from my sins and toward you.

“Thank you for sending Jesus to die for all that I’ve done wrong so that I don’t have to pay the penalty. I know I don’t deserve your forgiveness. I know only your grace can save me, Lord. I could never be good enough to get into a perfect place.

“Jesus, thank you for loving me so much that you took all my guilt on yourself. You made me acceptable for heaven, and I humbly ask you to save me. I believe in you, Jesus, and I believe you will keep your promise to save me and do your good work in me as I try to follow and serve you all of my life. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Cuando Dios te delega, Él te Unge

“El que los llama es fiel, y así lo hará’’. 1 Tesalonicenses 5:24 (NVI)

Dios nunca te pide que hagas algo sin darte lo que necesitas para hacerlo. La unción es una señal de que Dios te está equipando para cumplir una tarea que te ha asignado. Cuando Él te delega una tarea o un plan o una estrategia, también te dará el poder.

Al igual que una lámpara no brilla a menos que esté conectada, tu luz no brilla a menos que estés conectado a una fuente de poder. No puedes cumplir el propósito para el que fuiste creado apartado del poder de la resurrección del Espíritu Santo. Jesús dijo: “separados de mí no pueden ustedes hacer nada” Juan 15:5 (NVI).

Si quieres que el poder de Dios obre a través de tu vida, necesitas entender lo que significa tener Su unción y tener algunas cosas en mente.

Cuando Dios dice que lo hagas, puedes contar con Su unción. La última asignación de Jesús a sus discípulos parecía imposible. No había forma de que pudieran llevar el Evangelio a los confines de la tierra. Solo podía suceder con Su poder. Dios a menudo te dará una tarea que parece físicamente imposible, pero Él lo hará posible. “El que los llama es fiel, y así lo hará” 1 Tesalonicenses 5:24 (NVI). La unción de Dios facilita las tareas difíciles. Tus recursos son limitados. Tu energía es limitada. Tu conocimiento es limitado. Tu sabiduría es limitada. Tu talento es limitado. Dios no lo es. Con la unción de Dios, puedes manejar las cosas mejor, perdurar más y llegar más lejos. “Pido en oración que, de sus gloriosos e inagotables recursos, los fortalezca con poder en el ser interior por medio de su Espíritu” Efesios 3:16 (NTV). La unción de Dios hace posible lo imposible. En tu negocio, matrimonio, salud y relaciones, enfrentarás problemas insuperables. Dios es un padre competente. Él puede manejar cualquier problema que le des. Nada está más allá de su capacidad o de sus recursos. “Lo que es imposible para los hombres es posible para Dios” Lucas 18:27 (NVI). Dios unge tu vida para bendecir a otros. Jesús vino a consolar a los afligidos, a los quebrantados de corazón, a los que están esclavizados por los malos hábitos, a los que no saben cómo salir de la deuda y a los ciegos. Y Él también te unge para consolar a los demás. “Y saben que Dios ungió a Jesús de Nazaret con el Espíritu Santo y con poder. Después Jesús anduvo haciendo el bien y sanando a todos los que eran oprimidos por el diablo, porque Dios estaba con él” Hechos 10:38 (NTV). Para cada nuevo desafío, necesitas un nuevo poder de Dios. La unción por el Espíritu Santo no puede ser almacenada. No puedes manejar los problemas de hoy con la unción de ayer. Ciertamente no puedes manejar los problemas que tendrás mañana, la próxima semana y el próximo año con la unción de hoy. Mantente conectado con Dios para que Él pueda llenarte constantemente con su gracia, amor y poder. Pide la unción de Dios cada día. Santiago 4:2 dice: “ No tienen, porque no piden” (NVI).

Real Happiness Comes from Serving

“If you insist on saving your life, you will lose it. Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live.”

Mark 8:35 (TLB)

God wired the universe so that happiness does not come from anything the world has to offer.

Happiness comes from service. God designed you to be happiest when you are giving your life away. Why? Because he wants you to become like him—and he gave himself away in love. It’s all about love!

“If you insist on saving your life, you will lose it. Only those who throw away their lives for my sake and for the sake of the Good News will ever know what it means to really live” (Mark 8:35 TLB).

To have a happy heart, you have to practice service and generosity every day.

Matthew 20:28 says, “Even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve others and to give his life as a ransom for many” (NLT).

Jesus came to serve and give. Those two things will bring more happiness than anything else in your life, and they define what it means to follow Jesus. If you’re not serving, if you’re not giving, then you’re not following Jesus. It’s very simple.

God also wired the universe in such a way that the more you give yourself away, the more God gives to you and the more blessed and happier you are. 

Is your heart growing more generous every year? Are you more generous with your resources this year than you were a year ago? Or are you stuck at the same level of generosity and wondering why you’re also stuck in unhappiness?

In Philippians 2:17-18, Paul says, “Your faith makes you offer your lives as a sacrifice in serving God. If I have to offer my own blood with your sacrifice, I will be happy and full of joy with all of you. You also should be happy and full of joy with me” (NCV).

Your faith compels you to offer your life as a sacrifice and to serve God by serving others. Sacrifice and serving are two of the keys to lifelong happiness as you generously give your life away for the sake of the Gospel.

Talk It Over

What makes you happiest in your everyday life?
When have you experienced happiness through service or generosity?
What is one specific way that you can serve another person today?

Have you trusted Jesus with your life?

The Bible says you can only get to heaven by trusting in God through his Son, Jesus Christ. You cannot earn your way into heaven: “It is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this is not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

If you’re ready to confess your sins and to trust Jesus with your life, start with this prayer:

“Dear God, you have promised that if I believe in Jesus, everything I’ve ever done wrong will be forgiven, I will learn the purpose of my life, and you will accept me into your eternal home in heaven one day.

“I confess my sin, and I submit to Jesus as my Savior and Lord. Jesus, I want to follow you and serve you. I humbly commit my life to you and ask you to save me and accept me into your family. In your name I pray. Amen.”

Entrégale a Dios tu Defensa

“Me preparas un banquete en presencia de mis enemigos”. Salmo 23:5a (NTV)  

El Rey David sabía lo que significaba ser atacado emocional, verbal y físicamente. Cuando joven, fue ungido por el profeta Samuel para ser el siguiente rey de Israel, pero Saul seguía siendo el rey. A pesar de que David le servía lealmente, Saúl estaba celoso del futuro rey y decidió matarlo. David tuvo que esconderse de Saúl en cuevas mientras se decían mentiras sobre él por todo el reino. Incluso, David nunca dijo una mala palabra en contra del rey Saúl. Él nunca replicó, porque Dios estaba preparando a David para ser un rey conforme al corazón de Dios.

David dijo, “Me preparas un banquete en presencia de mis enemigos” Salmo 23:5a (NTV).

¿Suena como que David estaba estresado? ¡No! Él no tuvo que gastar sus energías defendiéndose porque confiaba en Dios como su defensor.

Se requiere mucha fe y humildad, para descansar y confiar en Dios cuando estás bajo ataque, cuando te mal entienden y cuando se esparcen rumores sobre ti. Cuando eso sucede, todo tu ser quiere levantarse y hacer algo al respecto. ¿Qué haces con las personas que te atacan? No hagas nada. Deja que Dios trate con ellos.

Confía en Dios para que sea tu defensor.

Dios no solo quiere defenderte, sino también tener compañerismo contigo: “Pero que se alegren todos los que en ti buscan refugio; ¡que canten siempre jubilosos! Extiéndeles tu protección, y que en ti se regocijen todos los que aman tu nombre” Salmos 5:11 (NVI).

Es un banquete, o una fiesta todo el tiempo —no solo en los buenos tiempos sino también cuando estás bajo ataque.

Dios dice, “Yo sé que estás en una batalla justo ahora. Estás peleando por tu trabajo. Estás peleando por tu salud. Estás peleando por tus finanzas. Estás peleando por tu dignidad. Mientras la batalla continua, quiero hacer un banquete para ti para darte un poco de ánimo”. Es una fiesta en una zona de combate. Es un banquete en un campo de batalla.

Si eres un hijo de Dios, tu Padre Celestial está orgulloso de ti. Los que te critican pueden molestarte, calumniarte, ignorarte, ridiculizarte, difamarte, pero no pueden detener la bendición de Dios en tu vida.

“Me condujo a la sala del banquete, y me cubrió con la bandera de su amor” Cantares 2:4 (RVC).

Get a Good Grip on God’s Word

“Hold firmly to the word of life.”

Philippians 2:16 (NLT)

When you choose to dwell on a worry, it will always get bigger in your mind. But if you want to change the way you think and renew your mind, then you’ve got to stop dwelling on your worries and meditate on God’s Word, the Bible, instead.

How do you meditate? Well, if you know how to worry, then you already know how to meditate. Worry is when you take a negative thought and think on it over and over and over. On the other hand, when you take a passage of Scripture and think on it over and over and over, that’s meditation.

If your only contact with God’s Word is when you hear it at church, you’ll have a weak grip on God’s Word, and it can easily be pulled out of your mind.

But if you hear God’s Word and you also read it every day, then you’ll start to get a better grip. Then, if you hear it and you read it and you study it, you’ll get an even better grip. And then, if you hear it and read it and study it and you start memorizing and meditating on it, you’ll have a solid grip on the Word of God. 

You’ll never hold tightly to God’s Word if you’re not doing all the important steps of Bible study.

Psalm 119:16 says, “Your laws make me happy. I never forget your word” (GW). Do you want to be happy? Following God’s principles will produce happiness. You remember those principles by hearing them, reading them, studying them, memorizing them, meditating on them, and then applying them to your life.

The Bible also says in Psalm 119:35, “Make me walk along the path of your commands, for that is where my happiness is found” (NLT).

If you’ve been looking for happiness in all the wrong places, then turn around. God says happiness is found in the path of his commands.

Cinco Maneras en que Jesús te Protege y te Dirige

“El propósito del ladrón es robar y matar y destruir; mi propósito es darles una vida plena y abundante. Yo soy el buen pastor. El buen pastor da su vida en sacrificio por las ovejas”. Juan 10:10-11 (NTV)

Las ovejas por naturaleza son animales indefensos, por eso es que un pastor utiliza algunas herramientas para cuidar y proteger a sus ovejas. Él usa una vara para proteger y un cayado con un pequeño gancho para rescatar a las ovejas.

Somos como ovejas perdidas, así que Jesús vino a la Tierra para ser nuestro Buen Pastor. Así como un pastor usa las herramientas físicas de la vara y el cayado para dirección y protección, Dios quiere protegerte y dirigirte. Aquí hay cinco maneras en como lo hace: 

Si le traes tus heridas, Jesús es compasivo.

Jesús tiene compasión de nosotros, porque sabe que estamos indefensos sin Él (Mateo 9:36). Él no te deja; Él te levanta. Él no te irrita; Él te sana.

“El Hijo del hombre no vino para que le sirvan, sino para servir y para dar su vida en rescate por muchos” Mateo 20:28 (NVI).

Si lo sigues, Jesús te lleva en la dirección correcta.

El Pastor va primero. Él conduce desde el frente y te llama hacia adelante. Jesús no te va a empujar por la vida. Él va a decir: “Mira cómo lo hago. Mira a dónde voy”.

“Una vez reunido su propio rebaño, camina delante de las ovejas, y ellas lo siguen porque conocen su voz” Juan 10:4 (NTV).

Si te confundes o te alejas, Jesús te encontrará y te traerá de vuelta.

Cuando Dios te trae de vuelta después que te alejaste de Él, no te castigará, pero puede disciplinarte. Si un pastor tiene una oveja que es propensa a vagar, a menudo amarra la pata de esa oveja para que no pueda moverse. De la misma manera, a veces Dios nos da una cojera para evitar que vaguemos.

“Si un hombre tiene cien ovejas y una de ellas se extravía, ¿qué hará? ¿No dejará las otras noventa y nueve en las colinas y saldrá a buscar la perdida?” Mateo 18:12 (NTV).

Si fracasas o caes, Jesús te rescata y te pone en el camino de la recuperación.

Como todas las ovejas, no solo vagamos, sino que también tropezamos. Cuando vivimos confiados en que Dios nos restaurará y nos rescatará cuando fracasemos, correremos fielmente hacia Él cada vez que cometamos un error.

“Si alguno de ustedes tiene una oveja y en sábado se le cae en un hoyo, ¿no la agarra y la saca? ¡Cuánto más vale un hombre que una oveja!” Mateo 12:11-12 (NVI).

Si confías en Él para tu salvación, Jesús mantendrá su promesa de hacer precisamente eso.

No es tu trabajo salvarte. Tu trabajo es simplemente poner tu mano en la de Dios y decir: “Dios, soy todo tuyo, lo bueno, lo malo, lo feo”. Dios te ama demasiado como para dejarte ir.

“porque mi Padre me las ha dado [las ovejas], y él es más poderoso que todos. Nadie puede quitarlas de la mano del Padre” Juan 10:29 (NTV).

La bondad de Dios significa que Él te guiará, te cuidará, te protegerá, te dirigirá y te salvará. Nadie más puede ofrecerte estos cinco beneficios. Solo vienen de Jesús, nuestro Buen Pastor.

How Do You Keep a Clear Conscience?

“What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record.”

Psalm 32:1-2 (TLB)

Feeling guilty or ashamed can cause you to lose your happiness. You’ve got to get rid of guilt and maintain a clear conscience if you want to be happy—because you cannot feel guilty and be happy at the same time.

Philippians 2:15 says, “Live clean, innocent lives as children of God, shining like bright lights in a world full of crooked and perverse people” (NLT).

Have you noticed that a jeweler will always put diamonds on black velvet when showing them to a customer? That’s because they shine brighter against a black backdrop. 

As cultures crumble and the world becomes darker and darker, Christians are to shine brighter and brighter. You are to live such a life of integrity and authenticity that when people look at you, they say, “You are a star!” The happiness that comes from a clear conscience will be hard to miss. 

You might say, “I’d like to be happy, but how do I keep my conscience clear when it’s not clear right now?” You do what Psalm 32:1-2 says: “What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record” (TLB).

Happiness, joy, and relief are three things everybody’s looking for in life. We all want to be happy. We all want to enjoy life. We all want relief from our pain. The Bible says it all comes from purity, and purity comes from forgiveness through God’s grace.

So how do you keep a clear conscience?

At the beginning and the end of every day, do a spiritual inventory. Talk to God about anything that is standing between you and him, and then deal with the junk from your day.

When we confess our sins, “he is faithful and just and will forgive us our sins and purify us from all unrighteousness” (1 John 1:9 NIV).

Tres cosas para Recordar acerca de los Valles

“Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado”. Salmo 23:4 (NVI)

En Israel, en el camino de Jerusalén a Jericó, hay un cañón llamado el Valle de la Sombra de la Muerte. El rey David probablemente viajó a través de él muchas veces. Algunos de los cañones a lo largo del camino a Jericó eran estrechos en la parte inferior y tan altos como 800 pies de altura. La única forma que se puede ver la luz del sol en la parte inferior es cuando es mediodía y el sol está directamente arriba. En la Biblia, los valles son a menudo una metáfora de los tiempos difíciles, los tiempos de oscuridad, la desesperación, la derrota o el desaliento.

Salmo 23:4 dice, “Aun si voy por valles tenebrosos, no temo peligro alguno porque tú estás a mi lado” (NVI). La Biblia nos enseña que Dios es un Dios que, no solo es parte de nuestras experiencias en la cima de la montaña. Él también está con nosotros en los valles.

Hay tres cosas que debes recordar sobre los valles: 

Los valles son parte de la vida. La Biblia dice en Deuteronomio 11:11, “En cambio, la tierra que pronto tomarás para ti es una región de colinas y valles, con lluvias abundantes” (NTV).

Los valles son inevitables. Todos acabamos de salir de un valle o estamos en medio de uno en este momento o nos dirigimos a otro, porque así es la vida. No puedes evitar los valles. En cambio, puedes contar con ellos. 

Los valles les suceden a todos. Son imparciales. Cosas buenas les pasan a las personas malas, y las cosas malas les suceden a las personas buenas. Estamos en un mundo caído y roto, así que tenemos problemas. Nadie es inmune. Nadie está aislado del dolor. Nadie navega por la vida sin problemas.

“Los que son de Dios podrán tener muchos problemas, pero él los ayuda a vencerlos” Salmo 34:19 (TLA). 

Los valles son impredecibles. No puedes planearlos. No los puedes pronosticar. Los problemas típicamente te atrapan con la guardia baja. De hecho, tus valles y tus problemas suelen aparecer en el peor momento: cuando no tienes tiempo, cuando no estás preparado y cuando es inconveniente. ¿No sería más fácil si pudieras programar todos tus valles en la vida, cuando te encuentres dormido, tu salud sea buena y nadie te esté molestando?

Proverbios 27:1 dice, “No presumas hoy de lo que piensas hacer mañana; ¡nadie sabe lo que traerá el futuro!” (TLA).

Cuando sabes que esperar en los valles de la vida, sabrás cómo prepararte para ellos.

God Is in You, with You, and for You

“God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him.”

Philippians 2:13 (NLT)

No matter what you’re going to face today or this week or next year, you won’t face it alone. God is with you, he is in you, and he is for you.

Philippians 2:13 says, “God is working in you, giving you the desire and the power to do what pleases him” (NLT).

God is working in you. The word “working” in Greek is the word energos, from which we get our word “energy.” God is the energy driver in your life. You’re not just going on willpower. You’re not just going on your own power. God says he will give you the power you need, no matter what you’re facing.

Not only is he in you, but he is also with you. The Bible says, “I will not leave you as orphans; I will come to you . . . On that day you will realize that I am in my Father, and you are in me, and I am in you” (John 14:18, 20 NIV).

That’s quite a promise! The Bible says that Christ is in you, that you’re sheltered with him, and that you’re sealed with the Holy Spirit. That means that, for the Devil to get to you, he’s got to get through the Trinity. That’s pretty good protection and a great relief from fear.

Not only is God with you and in you, but God is also for you. Psalm 23:6 says, “Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life” (ESV).

When a shepherd leads the sheep, guard dogs are always at the back, keeping watch and making sure the sheep move in the right direction.  The Bible says that the guard dogs in your life are God’s goodness and mercy. 

God’s goodness and mercy are always at work in your life. God gives you the things you don’t deserve—that’s his goodness. And he doesn’t give you the punishment you deserve for you sins—that’s his mercy.

His goodness includes the blessings you experience now but also the gift of your salvation: “For it is by grace you have been saved, through faith—and this not from yourselves, it is the gift of God—not by works, so that no one can boast” (Ephesians 2:8-9 NIV).

God is watching over your life! You ought to get up every morning and say with confidence, “God, thank you that you’re going to be with me today, you’re going to be in me today, and you’re going to be for me today.”

That’s good news that helps you get rid of fear of whatever you’re facing and replace it with happiness instead.

Talk It Over

What does it look like when you switch from living in your own power to living in God’s power that is available to you?
When do you doubt God’s presence the most? Ask God for faith to see him at work in this specific area of your life.

God promised that for those who believe in Jesus, there is no condemnation. He sent Jesus to save you from your sin. His death on the cross paid for every wrong you’ve ever done or will do. And by sacrificing himself for your sins and giving you his righteousness, Jesus made it possible for you to have a relationship with God the Father.

The good news doesn’t stop there. God also raised Jesus from the dead, proving his power over sin and death. And that makes it possible for you to spend eternity with him in heaven.

If you’re ready to surrender your life to Jesus Christ, start by praying this simple prayer: “Dear God, I know I’m a sinner, and I ask for your forgiveness. I believe Jesus Christ is your Son. I believe that he died for my sins and that you raised him to life. I want to trust him as my Savior and follow him as Lord from this day forward. Guide my life and help me to do your will. In Jesus’ name I pray. Amen.”

Si quieres Conocer la Voluntad de Dios, Simplemente Abre tu Biblia

“Me sirven de advertencia; el premio es grande si uno cumple con ellas. Nadie parece darse cuenta de los errores que comete. ¡Perdóname, Dios mío, los pecados que cometo sin darme cuenta!”. Salmo 19:11-12 (TLA)

La mayor parte de la voluntad de Dios ya está revelada. ¡Los principios están ahí! Cuando abres tu Biblia, Dios abre Su boca y comienza a hablar. ¿Estás esperando que Dios escriba Su voluntad en el Cielo? ¿Por qué tendría que hacer eso cuando ya la ha escrito en un libro? Abre la Biblia a diario y verás lo que Dios dice.

Deja de buscar por una voz y comienza a buscar un versículo.

“Me sirven de advertencia; el premio es grande si uno cumple con ellas” Salmo 19:11 (TLA).

Dios te enseñará sus principios. Luego, cuando estés buscando orientación, podrás ver si tus circunstancias o tus emociones se alinean con la Palabra de Dios. La Biblia confirmará la voluntad de Dios.

Y ten esto en cuenta: Dios espera que obedezcas lo que ya sabes antes de que te muestre algo nuevo. Entonces, si Dios ya te ha dicho lo que Él espera que hagas y todavía no lo has hecho, no esperes que te muestre el siguiente paso. Él está esperando que tomes el primer paso.

Te he pedido antes que practiques la meditación en la Palabra de Dios y que puedes usar el Salmo 23 para comenzar. Meditar en la Palabra de Dios significa pensar profundamente y enfocarse en Su Palabra por un período de tiempo. Primero, lee el pasaje lentamente, quizás en voz alta unas cuantas veces, poniendo énfasis en diferentes palabras o frases. En segundo lugar, reflexiona sobre la verdad del texto. Tercero, responde a Dios a la luz de lo que acabas de leer, esto puede ser en voz baja o en voz alta. Cuarto, descansa en la Palabra de Dios, escucha lo que Dios tiene que decir a través de las Escrituras.

Solo tienes que abrir tu Biblia para saber cuál es la voluntad de Dios para tu vida. Luego, tienes que dedicar tiempo a leerla y estudiarla para que pueda transformar tu corazón y tu mente.
