Deja Que Dios Te Diga Qué Dar

“Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con lo mejor de todo lo que produces”. Proverbios 3:9 (NTV)

Puedes dar por razón o por revelación. Si vas a convertirte en una persona de fe, debes aprender a dar por revelación.

Cuando das con razón, dices: “Esto es lo que puedo dar razonablemente”. No se requiere ninguna fe para dar por razón.

Dar por revelación es cuando dices: “Dios, ¿qué quieres dar a través de mí? ¿Cuánto quieres que confíe en ti en este caso en particular?”.

Mi esposa Kay y yo hemos sido probados muchas veces para dar cuando no lo teníamos, y siempre hemos visto la fidelidad de Dios.

Uno de los ejemplos más dramáticos fue cuando recaudamos dinero para construir el edificio de la Iglesia Saddleback en 1993. La gente se comprometió a donar durante un período de tres años. Así que Kay y yo oramos y creímos haber escuchado a Dios diciéndonos que diéramos una cantidad que ciertamente no era razonable. De hecho, era más de lo que podíamos pagar. Pero confiamos en Dios por esa cantidad

Entonces Dios me desafió a través de 1 Crónicas 29 a anunciar mi regalo, como lo hizo el rey David, para que animara y desafiara a nuestra iglesia. Realmente no quería hacerlo por muchas razones, incluido no quería parecer orgulloso. Pero Dios me dijo que lo hiciera. Y quería que Él bendijera ese edificio, así que lo hice. Me paré frente a mi iglesia un domingo y dije: “No sé de dónde viene el dinero, pero nos hemos comprometido a dar $100.000 dólares durante los próximos tres años. Por favor oren por mí”.

Un mes después, recibí una llamada de la editorial Zondervan. Dijeron: “Rick, queremos que escribas un libro y lo llames “Una Iglesia con Propósito”. Creemos que será un éxito de ventas, por lo que le enviaremos un anticipo de $150.000 dólares”.

Cuando me paré frente a la familia de mi iglesia unos días después y les conté esa historia, el lugar se volvió loco. La iglesia saltaba, gritaba, bailaba y cantaba. Fue una de las mejores experiencias de mi vida, y casi me la pierdo debido a mi propia terquedad. Si no me hubiera manifestado públicamente para mostrar mi confianza en la revelación de Dios, la iglesia y yo nos hubiéramos perdido de ver cómo Dios es confiable. Fue una lección que nunca olvidaré.

La Biblia dice: “Honra al Señor con tus riquezas y con lo mejor de todo lo que produces” Proverbios 3:9 (NTV).

En otras palabras, da por revelación, no por razón. Cuando lo hagas, te aseguro que verás la fidelidad de Dios.

Happiness and Humility Go Together

“I don’t mean to say I am perfect. I haven’t learned all I should even yet, but I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ saved me for and wants me to be. No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be.”

Philippians 3:12-13 (TLB)

Humble people are happy people. They never stop growing and learning.

The Bible says, “Test yourselves to make sure you are solid in the faith . . . Give yourselves regular checkups. You need firsthand evidence, not mere hearsay, that Jesus Christ is in you. Test it out. If you fail the test, do something about it” (2 Corinthians 13:5-9 The Message).

Do you give yourself regular checkups? Try this: Wake up every day and ask God, “What do I need to work on today?” This takes humility, but it’s a habit that will lead to happiness.

Paul knew the importance of humbly growing and learning. He wrote in Philippians 3:12-13: “I don’t mean to say I am perfect. I haven’t learned all I should even yet, but I keep working toward that day when I will finally be all that Christ saved me for and wants me to be. No, dear brothers, I am still not all I should be” (TLB).

When Paul wrote this Scripture, he was an older man in prison in Rome. He was at the end of his life. He was an incredibly mature person. Yet he said he hadn’t arrived. If anybody had the right to say, “I’ve arrived spiritually,” it would be the guy who wrote so much of the New Testament. But Paul said, “No, I haven’t arrived. I’m still growing, learning, and becoming more like Christ.”

Pride is the trap that so often keeps Christians from following Paul’s example and continuing to grow in Christ. Why? Because when you think you’ve got it all together, you won’t make an effort to become more spiritually mature. Humility, on the other hand, leads to happiness because it makes you teachable.

Happiness and humility go together because they cause you to ask, “How can I be a better spouse? How can I be a better friend? How can I be a better boss? How can I be a better follower of Jesus?” When you aren’t asking these questions, you’re missing out because you’ve stopped growing—and God made you to grow.

Take a step toward happiness today by humbly praying Psalm 139:23-24: “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” (ESV).

La Fe es Agradecer a Dios de Antemano

“Les digo, ustedes pueden orar por cualquier cosa y si creen que la han recibido, será suya”. Marcos 11:24 (NTV)

La fe no es solo creer que Dios puede hacer algo. Fe no es solo esperar que Él haga algo. La fe es agradecer a Dios de antemano.

Jesús dijo: “Les digo, ustedes pueden orar por cualquier cosa y si creen que la han recibido, será suya” Marcos 11:24 (NTV).

Dices: “¡Espera un minuto! ¿Tengo que agradecer a Dios de antemano para obtenerlo?” Sí. Si le das gracias a Dios después de haberlo recibido, eso es gratitud. Cuando le agradeces de antemano, eso es fe.

La gratitud es buena y justa. Pero tu objetivo debe ser convertirte en una persona de fe más profunda. Para hacer eso, debes agradecer a Dios de antemano.

Si te doy un cheque ahora mismo de mil dólares, ¿esperarías agradecerme hasta que lo cobres? ¡No! Me lo agradecerías ahora mismo. Pero el dinero no será tuyo hasta que lo cambies, porque ese cheque es realmente una promesa. Cuando te di ese cheque, dirías: “Gracias, Rick”. Creerías que soy confiable y que tengo el dinero en el banco para cubrir ese cheque de mil dólares.

De la misma manera, la fe es dar gracias a Dios de antemano. Es creer que lo que Dios ha prometido, lo proporcionará. Es decir que amas a Dios por quién es y no solo por lo que puede hacer por ti. Muestra que confías en Él para hacer lo que dijo que haría.

Un día, dos ciegos siguieron a Jesús hasta la casa donde se hospedaba. Le gritaron que tuviera misericordia de ellos, y Jesús les preguntó si tenían fe en que Él podría sanarlos. Ellos respondieron que creían, y Jesús dijo: “Debido a su fe, así se hará” Mateo 9:29 (NTV).

Lo que estoy diciendo es esto: si Dios te dice que vayas a pescar en un bote de remos, lleva la salsa tártara contigo. ¡Vas a comer pescado frito esta noche!

You’ll Find Happiness as You Get to Know God

“For my determined purpose is that I may . . . progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly.”

Philippians 3:10 (AMPC)

Happiness is found in getting to know God a little bit better every day. 

In Philippians 3:10, Paul said, “For my determined purpose is that I may . . . progressively become more deeply and intimately acquainted with Him, perceiving and recognizing and understanding the wonders of His Person more strongly and more clearly” (AMPC).

Paul became “deeply and intimately acquainted” with God because he had a relationship with him and took the time to get to know him. He understood the difference between knowing about someone and actually knowing someone—and Paul wanted to really know Christ. 

You don’t become “deeply and intimately acquainted” with God by accident. You don’t just wake up and accidentally fall into a relationship with Jesus. As Paul says, it’s a “determined purpose.” It’s something you have to do something about. You have to invest your time in it.

One trap that can keep you from getting to know God better is busyness. Just like busyness can destroy your relationships, it can destroy your relationship with God.

Psalm 46:10 says, “Be still, and know that I am God” (NIV).

To grow in your relationship with God, you need to make time for him and “be still.” Just a few minutes of focused time every day can make all the difference in the world. I’m not talking hours and hours but 10 or 15 minutes each morning. Only then will you, like Paul, begin “understanding the wonders” of God with greater clarity.  

Make this your daily prayer: “Lord, if I don’t do anything else today, I want to get to know you a little bit better and I want to love you a little bit more.” As you pray and live this out, you’ll begin to experience greater happiness in your life.

Dilo Como Dios Quiere Que Sea

“Dios le dijo: «Te hice padre de muchas naciones». Eso sucedió porque Abraham creyó en el Dios que da vida a los muertos y crea cosas nuevas de la nada”. Romanos 4:17 (NTV)

Tus palabras tienen un poder enorme. Si vas a convertirte en una mujer o un hombre de fe, tienes que cambiar tu forma de hablar. Tienes que anunciarlo para poder experimentarlo.

A veces, hablar con fe parece totalmente tonto, arrogante y fuera de este mundo, para las personas que no entienden la fe. Abraham sabía de esto. Dios vino a Abram un día y le dijo: “Abram, voy a cambiar tu nombre de Abram a Abraham”. Abraham significa “el padre de una gran nación”.

Solo había un problema: Abraham tenía 99 años y no tenía hijos. Probablemente fue ridiculizado sin piedad por su nombre. Pero Dios dice que no vivimos en el mundo de la realidad humana. Vivimos en el mundo de la realidad espiritual. Cuando ves el mundo con ojos espirituales, no lo ves como es, sino como puede ser, como debe ser y como Dios quiere que sea.

Romanos 4:17 dice que Dios “Dios le dijo: «Te hice padre de muchas naciones». Eso sucedió porque Abraham creyó en el Dios que da vida a los muertos y crea cosas nuevas de la nada” (NTV). Eso se llama hablar con fe: lo anuncias para experimentarlo.

Sin embargo, es posible que escuches a algunas personas decir: “Simplemente lo digo como es”. Critican y menosprecian. Pueden ser bastante negativos, porque hay muchas razones en el mundo para ser negativos.

Esa es una forma de hacerlo. Pero hay otra forma mejor. En lugar de decirlo como es, ¡puedes decirlo como podría ser! Decirlo como es nunca ha cambiado a nadie. Solo pone a la gente a la defensiva.

Por ejemplo, podrías decirle a alguien: “Eres un pésimo padre. No pasas tiempo con tus hijos porque tu carrera es más importante”. Pero cuando etiquetas a alguien, lo empeoras.

En su lugar, podrías decir: “Veo en ti el potencial de la grandeza. Si dejas que Jesucristo tome el control de tu vida, no serás perfecto, pero puedes convertirte en un hombre de carácter piadoso que tus hijos admiren”. ¡Ese es el tipo de conversación que motiva al cambio!

Recuerda, no tienes que decirlo como es. Dilo como podría ser, como debería ser, como Dios quiere que sea. Dilo de antemano y con fe y luego observa cómo obra Dios.

Know What Counts—and What Doesn’t

“Everything else is worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord.”

Philippians 3:8 (NLT)

Every day when you wake up, you need to remind yourself of what counts and what doesn’t count. Don’t be distracted by things that are insignificant and petty.

Why is it important to remind yourself of what matters? It’s easy to lose your joy over some small thing. In fact, it’s usually the small irritations—not the big issues—that cause you to lose your happiness. Somebody cuts you off when you’re trying to make a turn, and you lose your happiness. The clothes you put on don’t fit anymore, and you lose your happiness. It’s the little things that sometimes affect people the most, and yet they don’t really matter.

Paul said in Philippians 3:7, “I once thought these things were valuable, but now I consider them worthless because of what Christ has done” (NLT).

What was the most important thing in your life before you met Jesus Christ? Was it your career? Making money? Maybe it was getting a date or being popular. 

Paul said all those things are “worthless when compared with the infinite value of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord” (Philippians 3:8 NLT). 

Here’s a good question to ask when you’re distracted by worthless things: How much will this matter in 100 years? Many things won’t even matter tomorrow, much less for eternity. All the things you used to care about don’t even compare to the joy that comes from having a relationship with Jesus. 

When you become a Christian, Jesus changes your values. You no longer want to do the things you used to do. He changes your “wants.” 

When God comes into your life, you learn the joy of knowing Jesus. And that’s what really counts.

Obedece porque Dios lo Dice

“Fue por la fe que Noé construyó un barco grande para salvar a su familia del diluvio en obediencia a Dios, quien le advirtió de cosas que nunca antes habían sucedido. Por su fe, Noé condenó al resto del mundo y recibió la justicia que viene por la fe”. Hebreos 11:7 (NTV)

La fe es obedecer aunque no comprendas. En el Nuevo Testamento, hay 1.050 mandatos y todos son para tu beneficio.

Dios a menudo dice cosas que parecen confusas, como “Ama a tus enemigos” y “Perdona a las personas que te lastimaron”. ¡Eso no es fácil! Muchos mandatos de la Biblia parecen difíciles, irrazonables, irreales, inalcanzables e incluso imposibles. Pero cuando Dios dice cosas como: “Deberías guardar el sexo para el matrimonio”, no está siendo malo. Lo dice porque sabe, que es lo mejor para ti y qué te hará feliz.

Cada vez que Dios te dice que hagas algo, es una prueba de tu fe. La pregunta es esta: ¿Confías en Dios o confías en tu instinto? ¿Confías en la Palabra o confías en el mundo?

¿Obedecerás?

Cuando eras niño, ¿tus padres te pidieron alguna vez que hicieras algo que parecía irrazonable? Cuando preguntaste: “¿Por qué debería hacer esto?” dirían: “¡Porque yo lo dije!” Mirando hacia atrás, ¿las cosas que tus padres te dijeron que hicieras “porque ellos lo dijeron” eran lo correcto? Si. ¿Puedes ver en retrospectiva que fueron sabios?

Al igual que hizo con Noé, Dios te pedirá que hagas cosas que no entiendes por el resto de tu vida, no solo cuando eres un niño. Cuando tengas 80 años, Dios te dirá: “Quiero que hagas esto”. Y preguntarás, “¿Por qué? Eso no tiene sentido”. Y Dios dirá: “Porque yo lo digo”.

Situaciones como estas son una prueba. Fe es creer cuando no lo ves, pero también obedeces cuando no lo entiendes. Si no aprendes a obedecer, te perderás tantas bendiciones que Dios tiene reservadas para ti.

Pero si aprendes a hacer lo que Dios te dice que hagas sin dudarlo, incluso cuando parezca absurdo y exactamente lo contrario de tu tendencia natural, entonces crecerás en la fe y serás bendecido.

Legalism Robs You of Happiness

“I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.”

Philippians 3:9 (NLT)

Realizing there’s nothing you can do to make God love you more is one of the most liberating feelings in the world—and it is a key to happiness.

The Bible says, “We Christians glory in what Christ Jesus has done for us and realize that we are helpless to save ourselves” (Philippians 3:3 TLB).

Each time you forget this truth and think you’ve got to somehow earn God’s love, that’s legalism—and it robs you of happiness.

Legalism is trusting in what you can do for God instead of trusting in what Jesus has already done for you. It’s following a list of rules and regulations to prove yourself worthy, and it’s a trap that keeps you from relaxing in God’s grace.

Paul knew how to relax in God’s grace. He said in Philippians 3:9, “I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ” (NLT). In other words, the way you earn the love of God is this: You don’t earn it. It’s not about your performance; it’s about his pardon.

How do you know when you’re being legalistic? When you’re being legalistic, you’re often judgmental of other people. That’s because it’s easier to be critical of others when you don’t feel accepted and loved yourself. Why would you want other people to feel good about themselves when you don’t feel good about yourself?

On the other hand, how do you know when you’re living by grace? When you’re living by grace, you’re gracious to others. You find it easier to forgive because you recognize that God continues to forgive you. And since you’re not trying to earn your way to heaven, you can relax.

Every morning, remind yourself of God’s grace by praying, “Lord, today I am reminding myself that I’m completely forgiven.”

The more grace you live by, the more joy you’ll have.

Cree Para Que Puedas Ver

“La fe demuestra la realidad de lo que esperamos; es la evidencia de las cosas que no podemos ver”. Hebreos 11:1 (NTV)

 La fe visualiza el futuro. Es creer en algo antes de verlo. Hebreos 11:1 dice: “La fe demuestra la realidad de lo que esperamos; es la evidencia de las cosas que no podemos ver” (NTV).

Mucha gente dice: “¡Creeré cuando vea!” Dios dice que la verdad es exactamente lo contrario: “Verás cuando creas”. Hay que creer muchas cosas en la vida antes de poder verlas.

En la década de 1960, la Unión Soviética envió al primer cosmonauta al espacio exterior. Él rodeó la tierra y cuando volvió a bajar, hizo una conferencia de prensa y dijo: “Busqué a Dios en los cielos y no lo vi por ningún lado. Por tanto, no hay Dios”. Los comunistas, un régimen ateo, concluyeron: “Ahora tenemos pruebas científicas de que Dios no existe”.

Aproximadamente seis meses después, John Glenn, un astronauta de los Estados Unidos, fue al espacio, dio tres vueltas a la Tierra, regresó y tuvo una conferencia de prensa. Dijo: “¡Vi a Dios en todas partes! Vi su gloria en la galaxia. Vi su esplendor en el universo. Vi su majestad en las estrellas”.

Jesús dijo: “A menos que nazcas de nuevo, no puedes ver el Reino de Dios” Juan 3:3 (NTV). Antes de que haya una transformación espiritual en tu vida, tu visión es demasiado corta para ver la posibilidad de lo que Dios está haciendo en el mundo que te rodea. Esto es cierto para todas las personas. La fe viene antes que ver.

Es la fe lo que hace que un arquitecto diseñe un edificio, primero creyendo que se puede hacer. Es la fe lo que hace que un atleta olímpico practique y asista a las pruebas olímpicas porque cree que puede ganar. Es la fe lo que hace que el científico crea que podemos llevar a un hombre a la luna.

Es un principio universal de vida: tienes que creerlo antes de verlo. Cuando tengas fe, verás las cosas maravillosas que Dios está haciendo en ti, a través de ti y a tu alrededor.

The Power of Grateful Prayers

“Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace.”

Philippians 4:6-7 (NLT)

In Philippians 4:6-7 you’ll find one of the most difficult teachings to obey in the entire Bible: “Don’t worry about anything; instead, pray about everything. Tell God what you need, and thank him for all he has done. If you do this, you will experience God’s peace” (NLT).

It’s not easy to stop worrying about the often-scary, everyday parts of your life, but God tells you how. He says you should pray about everything and thank him for all he has done. Grateful prayer brings peace. God says that, when you start to worry, you should pray. 

Parents understand the power of grateful prayers. Most parents wouldn’t appreciate their children always making requests and never saying “thank you” for the things they’ve received.  

God sees it the same way. He is waiting for you to ask him for what you need and want. More than 20 times in the New Testament, you’re told to “ask” him. But he wants you to ask with gratefulness.

The Bible urges you to be specific in your requests—and in your praises. Instead of a simple “thank you for everything,” God wants you to tell him what you’re grateful for.

When I say to my wife, “I’m so grateful for you,” she tells me to be specific. She likes to hear what I appreciate about her and what I’m grateful for about her. God does too. So when you pray, tell God what you’re thankful for.

Something that can require an even bigger step of faith is when you thank God in advance. When you have the faith to thank God ahead of time—before you can see how he’s working—miracles happen.

The more thankful you are, the more God will work in your life. The Bible says that God inhabits the praise of his people. He uses your thanksgiving as an instrument of power in your life.

So, take a moment now, and tell God everything you’re grateful for.
