Students Need LinkedIn
Attention college students. Why aren’t you on LinkedIn yet?
I am often hired to speak at colleges and universities about business networking. When I do, I always conduct an informal poll of the students to see how many have a LinkedIn profile. The result is usually less than a quarter of the attendees. This is troubling to me.
LinkedIn is now over 238,000,000 members strong, with more than 84 million in the United States alone. The professional social network has 30 million students and recent...

Rock on with these five marketing tips
I had the good fortune of being asked to return to the Americana Music Festival last week to lead a panel on marketing for musicians. Thanks to Wayne Leeloyfor the invitation.

I enjoyed a mixer event this week put on by NAMA, the Nashville Chapter of the North American Marketing Association. (Full disclosure: I am a board member.) The event was a fun opportunity to mix with marketers from the Greater Nashville area. It also inspired this article.
I am often...

I have to give a shout out to Nancy VanReece, who cracked me up with this tweet.
Automation is a great thing. It makes online marketing easier and Twitter less time consuming. It can also cause problems and even public relations nightmares....

How to Use Twitter Lists Like a Pro
This is an excerpt from a guest post I wrote for Career Attraction. You can read the full post here.
I spoke at a conference recently to a rather social media-savvy audience. It didn’t surprise me that the bulk of the crowd raised their hands when I asked them if they were active on Twitter. It shocked me when less than a quarter raised their hands to say they used Twitter lists.
Back in the early days of Twitter, there wasn’t an option to create lists. Instead, you had to manually use a wiki t...

Note to Self. Here’s How to Remember Everything.
In my book, New Business Networking, I write about ways to help you remember names and information better. We often rush from meeting to meeting without taking the important step of noting info about who we met and what we talked about. One suggestion I have is to record an audio note to yourself on your phone and transcribe it later.
I have discovered a dead simple, free way to transcribe your voice memo directly to your email. You don’t need a fancy smartphone, all you need is a Gmail accoun...
