10 Books You Must Read

I asked friends on Facebook and in my private LinkedIn networking group (are you a member?) what their favorite books about networking are. Several friends selected my book, but that wasn’t the point – I swear.

It is crucial for any person who wants to grow their business or advance their career to focus on networking effectively. The following books are ones I highly suggest you download and read over the next little while (I plan to). Leave me a comment if you do, I would love to hear your f...

A Chat with Marketing Smarts

A Chat with Marketing SmartsI recently had the great pleasure of speaking with Kerry O’Shea Gorgone, host of the amazing Marketing Smarts podcast from MarketingProfs. Have you heard the show before? I highly recommend you subscribe in iTunes, so you never miss an episode. I loved her recent conversations with Lynette Young, Scott Stratten, Ian Cleary, and Tom Martin(to name a few).

Kerry interviewed me about my book and my own experiences networking to advance my career and business. We spoke a lot about the importance of...

Understanding LinkedIn Showcase Pages

Back in November, LinkedIn introduced Showcase Pages to a number of large companies. Showcase Pages are now available to all. Here is a reminder of what they are and how to use them.

In the past, by following a LinkedIn Company Page, you would see all relevant updates they were posting. This was fine, since you were following them in the first place. However, what if the company had many brands to manage?

The case for managing multiple brands

Not everyone wants to hear and see every piece of new...

A Must See Twitter Magic Trick!

Do you believe in magic? How about magical recommendations of cool people to follow and Twitter hashtags to check out? Sounds magical, right? Okay, maybe not exactlymagical, but it’s still pretty neat.

A few months ago the talented folks at Twitter created an account called MagicRecs. All you have to do is follow it and you will receive occasional recommendations as direct messages. It’s a fantastic way to find new people to follow on Twitter.

Essential tips for business cards

IMG 6341 187x250 Essential tips for business cardsDid you hear the recent story about Chinese multimillionaire Chen Guangbiao‘s outrageous business card? His card made big news across the web recently (so did he) because of the outlandish job titles he had featured on it. Three of my favorites are, “Most Influential Person Of China”, “Most Prominent Philanthropist of China” and “Most Charismatic Philanthropist of China”.

In my book, New Business Networking, I reserve a chapter dedicated to the importance of business cards. A smart networker n...

Yes, and …

Screen Shot 2014 01 24 at 7.10.49 AM 250x250 Yes, and ...Many years ago, I studied improv comedy with Second City in Toronto, and I performed regularly when I lived in Ireland. In Nashville, I am a mentor for start-ups participating in the popular business accelerator,Jumpstart Foundry. You are probably curious how the two are connected, right?

A blog post by my friend, Suzan Murphy, inspired me to consider how improv can be used in start-ups. I recommend you take a moment to visit her site to read, “How Improv Can Help You Achieve Your Goals“.

The f...

Visualize 2013

Screen Shot 2014 01 08 at 4.03.13 PM 444x250 Visualize 2013This is the time of year we all slow down and reflect upon the last twelve months. What were our accomplishments in 2013? What were our goals? Where did we go? Who did we meet? I like to review my calendar to see the people I met in the year (thar be treasures). I re-read my blog posts and I also love to get geeky by visualizing the data I created on popular social networks.

Each of the following free services will create short, entertaining videos and maps to summarize 2013. I expect the resu...

NMX: Brighter than the Vegas Strip

nmx 400x250 NMX: Brighter than the Vegas StripI just returned from a few days in Las Vegas at NMX, the New Media Expo. I was there to present on how to improve your networking efforts and make the most from NMX.

It is absolutely remarkable when hundreds of people come together with similar interests that they are excited about. Everyone I met at NMX had one thing in common, they were downright pumped about social media. It was an energy brighter than the lights along the Vegas strip.

The secret to making the most from any event is to meet...

Know Thyself: Personality Tests

Screen Shot 2013 12 10 at 7.37.08 AM Know Thyself: Personality TestsMy Dad was a headhunter many years ago in Toronto. The firm he worked with was a large one, so they had access to tools others did not.

One such tool was an extensive personality test they would use for candidates. My Dad chose me as his guinea pig to test the test.

I was cleaning out some old boxes in the attic recently and happened upon the test results. I was shocked by how accurate they were. It amazed me that a personality test I did twenty years ago so accurately described me now. People...
