Join me at NMX
To say I’m excited to attend Blog World NMX on January 4th would be an understatement. There are few conferences that feel like summer camp where I catch up with old friends and make new ones. NMX is an opportunity for social media professionals and hobbyists to connect and learn from one another.
Readers of New Business Networking will be familiar with the PNME (Podcast New Media Expo) conference in 2007. This inspiring conference brought together people I wanted to meet – bloggers, podcaster...

The Top 10 Holiday Countdown Spectacular
It’s good to be finally winding down for the holidays with my family. I have had an amazing year, and I’ve reached some major milestones. My book, New Business Networking, was published in late May, I began a bimonthly column for the Tennessean newspaper, I spoke at stellar conferences and at some great companies, and my business has nearly reached it’s second year anniversary with a group of wonderful clients. Not bad at all.
I hope you had a healthy and prosperous 2013. Life is like a roller...

Meet Your Friends Offline
The Internet is a powerful place.
We meet like-minded people from all across this wonderful world. We socialize with our new friends via an array of different social networking sites, and these relationships grow stronger as we invest time in them.
This is a magical experience to me, and one that becomes even better when I meet my online friends offline, “in real life”.
In my book, New Business Networking, I write about some of my personal experiences with meeting online friends in person and wh...

How to Plan Local Events
Several years ago during BarCamp Nashville, a large, technology unconference,an issue came up about the many technology events taking place in the city. The community was growing quickly, and it seemed like a new meet up was occurring daily. It was becoming difficult to keep up.
Not having a listing of all events was problematic for attendees, because there was no way to see everything in one place. It was easy to miss an event simply by not knowing it existed or when it was scheduled for.

Essential Email Hacks for the Holidays
If you are anything like me, your email inbox tends to overflow this time of year. Retailers are sending you their seasonal offers, and spammers are doing the same. Your friends and family are sending you seasonal messages of merriment, your work projects are wrapping up, and you are busy preparing for business in the first quarter of next year. Your overflowing inbox probably has you feeling just a tad overwhelmed or perhaps as sour as the Grinch himself. That’s no way to feel at this festiv...

Giving Thanks
Thanksgiving is just around the corner. This is the time of the year that we give thanks for the good fortunes we have, our friends and family.
The first Thanksgiving in America was held in the fall of 1621. The Pilgrims created a three-day feast to cerebrate a bountiful harvest. If you consider your business your harvest, you likely have plenty of people to thank for keeping it bountiful.
Now is the time to reflect on the year and to give thanks to your network. Here are some tips to help you...

Dot-Matrix Business Card
I love unique and unusual business cards. I’ve seen everything from steel cards to cards made from bacon. Just when I think I have seen them all, a dot-matrix business card pops on my radar.
Tom Ward has created a scrollable, electronic business card. It’sa dot-matrix scroller with buttons that share the different information stored inside the card’s flash memory. It’s certainly unique and unusual, but may not suit every situation.
Tom’s product page on Instructablesexplains…

Conference networking should focus on quality, not quantity
I recently returned home to Nashville from speaking at BOLOin Scottsdale, Arizona. During my time there, I was reminded of the importance of actively networking, but doing so in an honest, sincere and slow way.
If you attend conferences by rushing around trying to meet as many people as you can so you can collect as many business cards as you can, you are doing it wrong. Effective business networking is about quality over quantity. Take the time to get to know people.
Attend the presentations w...

Blown away by BOLO
I honestly didn’t know what to expect by attending and speaking at the BOLO Conference. I have never worked in the advertising industry, and BOLO is very much a conference for agency owners, staff, and vendors.
Held at the groovy, retro, Hotel Valley Ho, in Scottsdale, AZ., BOLO was one of my favorite conferences I have attended. I am honored to have been included as a speaker and very much have Jay Baer, Bret Gilesand Tyler Farnsworthto thank. Thank you gents.
The energy of the conference was...
