I want my 5k!

IMG_1144.jpg

For weeks now I’ve been hitting the treadmill, working my way up from a moderate walk to a brisk walk to a light jog, trying to finish 5k in an hour. We’ve been outside, hitting the trails, hiking for 5k to 10k at a time on weekends (and really enjoying the fall weather and tree colours!), so I know I can do this. When I’...

"Pastrami on Rye"

pastrami1.png

Who doesn’t love a good sandwich?

My story “Pastrami on Rye” is in the newest edition of On Spec Magazine, issue #114. Available at their website and where books are sold.

This story is partly rooted in truth. When I was kid, my dad took me on a trip to Toronto. Born and raised in small town rural Ontario, this was probab...

Projects

I’m sure my house is wondering what happened that resulted in all the extra attention its receiving this year. Ah, self-isolating. Nothing like having all those unfinished projects glaring in your face all day long.

The bathroom was one of the areas to receive attention this year. I live in a bungalow where the bathroom is on the main floor with the window looking directly out to the backyard. That would be fine, but there’s a street back there and no fence (yet).

Over the years I’ve used curtai...

Unravelled

I received this simple cowl pattern and yarn for my birthday more than a year ago. I have since started knitting it only to unravel it after badly messing it up. Three times! It’s about to be four because I’m three rows in and I just realized I’m short seven stitches.

And that’s okay.

This is how I learn. I give it a go and if it doesn’t work, I start over.

When I made the Katniss cowl, I didn’t have a pattern to work from. I knit, I unravelled. I knit, I unravelled. Eventually, I knit all the p...

Recent Reads

Over the past year, I’ve read a few urban fantasy books that I thought were great, and since it’s summer reading season, I thought I would share for anyone looking for what to read next.

The Last Valkyrie Series by Karina Espinosa

If you love Norse mythology or the Thor movies, you’ll love this series. The main character, Raven, is strong and independent. Banished, exiled and accused of murder, she finds herself pulled back into the supernatural underground she’s tried so hard to avoid.

Start wi...

"We All Fall Down"

Good news! I have a story, We All Fall Down, in the forthcoming anthology, Air: Sylphs, Spirits, & Swan Maidens, from Tyche Books. Coming Summer 2020!

Edited by Rhonda Parrish

Air-500x775ish.jpg

Whimsical, Inquisitive, Quick-Witted

Air is essential for life. The need for air is so important that breathing is instinctual. Yet Air is unstable and capricious, blowing gently as a summer breeze in one moment and blasting with the fury of a tornado in the next. No wonder that tricksters, fairies, and spirits belong...

Hurricane Hazel

65 years ago, Hurricane Hazel swept the East Coast, and instead of veering off east of Toronto, the storm ran into a cold front that renewed its strength and sent it north-west, through Toronto and heading for Hudson Bay. In one of the worst natural disasters in Canadian History, Hurricane Hazel took 81 lives and left 4000 people homeless.

So naturally I felt this was the perfect setting for a short story.

“Stag and Storm” was accepted for the Canadian Dreadful anthology and published by Dark...

Short Story News

(Newsletter subscribers already heard this news. More news coming soon! Join the list!)

About a half hour south-west of London, Ontario, surrounded by golden fields, is a little town called Dutton. Every year, the Friends of Dutton-Dunwich sponsor the John Kenneth Galbraith Literary Award. I entered my story "If Wishes Were Pennies" five years ago, and surprisingly made it to the semi-finals. This year that same story was purchased for the anthology, Canadian Creatures. Every year since, I've...
