Tomorrow wasn’t promised,
always some far off wish
I kept building foundations on,
someday was all the concrete
I poured, all the rebar I hoped
would one day make us
earthquake proof.
Today was a goal, some nail
to hang a hat on, paint on the walls
that all sounded like “what are we
doing today?” and I could hear myself
asking it, open ended like those questions
where the answer never actually
matters.
A million days waiting for the tomorrow
and today of it all, a million nights
alone and empty, ten million attempts
to show everyone the simple beauty
that we had found.
We’ll get there, I’m still pouring
retaining walls to hold back
the earth, still reinforcing anything
that could be damaged in the
shaking. Still, but my goodness,
I am so tired of competing
