The bride’s first appearance on the show...
The bride’s first appearance on the show and her first victim, Soo Lin Yao, a mirror for Sherlock.
The bride is in Soo Lin’s life because her brother is still embroiled with a criminal organisation. Mary is in Sherlock’s life possibly because of something Mycroft did or allowed to happen. Soo Lin’s brother shoots her when John leaves her alone. Mary shoots Sherlock after he leaves John’s side.
Sherlock comes looking for Soo Lin and sees the bride, unveiled. On her face and body are a threat, in code: 1 & 15. Page 15, entry 1 of the London A-Z book is the word, ‘deadman’. Sherlock, there, on the street, with that word hovering over beautiful romantic bokeh, is a dead man. Maybe Mary really was supposed to kill Sherlock.
Anyway, here we see a threat from Mary from the future in the form of the cypher message. We also see foreshadowing about Sherlock getting shot and about Mycroft’s involvement.
Not that this is news, people have written about Soo Lin as Sherlock’s mirror, etc. but now that we’ve seen TAB we can see the resemblance between The Bride(s) and the first threat sent by the Black Lotus.
Great stuff.
The Lying (or Singing) Detective
Just an idea. There is a 1986 UK show with Michael Gambon and a 1993 US film remake with Robert Downey Jr.
The story is about a seriously ill detective lying in hospital and imagining wild stories in his mind. There are different time levels, mix-ups of real and fictitious characters and so on. Just one quote from Wikipedia: “The three worlds of the hospital, the noir thriller, and wartime England often merge in Marlow’s mind, resulting in a fourth layer, in which character interactions that would otherwise be impossible (e.g. fictional characters interacting with non-fictional characters) occur.”
So could S4E2 be a nod to Canon and the show/film?

Oh, that sounds like a very interesting connection @stillgosherlocked . Twisting the word ’lying’ from ‘telling lies’ to ‘lying in bed’ would be right the thing for TPTB to do. Hiding things again in plain sight? Or behind the double meaning of words? Clever!
And regarding ’hiding’ things: I did a bit of reasurch last night about the word ‘thatch’. I wonder if this could be also a bit of a 'twisted’ thing.

I can imagine this to be their reactions when someone asks them a question related to kissing each other in front of the cameras, if it’s awkward or whatever. Giggling and blushing for like five minutes and then all Martin says is “we enjoy it much more when there are no cameras around“ and he smirks so smugly afterwards, but no one knows whether he’s being serious or not, except for Ben who turns red af and doesn’t manage to say anything until the rest of the interview.
This is exactly what’s going to happen
It’ll be the one time Ben is going to be speechless.

The Lying Detective Speculation
I think this goes beyond just Sherlock lying about dying when he is actually fine, or vice versa because the episodes are never really about the cases, but about Sherlock and John’s relationship.
So I’m speculating that this episode will be about exposing all the lies Sherlock has told in the past and will finally lead us to the truth, that Sherlock is in love with John.
After all the second episode of each series always progresses Sherlock and John’s relationship, in TBB it was “colleagues”, in THOTB it was “friend”, in TSO3 it was “best friend”, and so that just leaves a love confession for the second episode of series 4.
And a love confession can not occur without Sherlock explaining to John that he lied about being a high functioning sociopath, that he does have emotions and desires. That the reason he moved John’s chair and went back to drugs after John’s wedding is because he was heartbroken about losing John and was trying to numb his pain. That he came back to life at the realisation that John was in danger. That he excused Mary shooting him as “surgery” and protected Mary by killing Magnussen, all because he wanted to John safe and happy.
All this needs to be explained to John and the audience before Sherlock utters those three words.
Which is why it’s called The Lying Detective because, Sherlock Holmes the emotionless deer-stalker wearing detective, the version of himself that he presents to the public, is a lie. This episode will finally see the destruction of that persona once and fall all. Finally revealing to the audience and to John, who the real Sherlock Holmes is. A man who is oh so very human and oh so in love.

Honestly, though. I really don’t think anything close to the Three Garridebs is spoilery enough that they wouldn’t share it. Casuals would just say oh that’s nice they’re doing that one, or maybe at the most oh that’s nice their brotastic bromance will be confirmed. We assume 3G will be in this series anyway (personally I think ep1). And we assume they’ll be together romantically this series anyway (ditto). It can’t be about spoiling for us via a hint in the title (the whole show is one big hint anyway and we’re already sure), it must be something pretty damn unambiguous even for casuals, if it’s about the boys’ love at all. And maybe it’s not about them. Maybe it’s something like The Evil Brother, or Mary Was Moriarty All Along, or Malevolent Molly or something.
Yeah. I agree. I think the fandom puts more stock in the idea of “Garridebs” than the writers or casuals do. There was some quote from Mark at one point saying we’ve already had John threatened (TGG) and other dangers to both of them so in a way they’ve DONE Garridebs. Also, my gut says that clip in the S4 teaser where Sherlock is horrified–that might be about seeing John dead or hurt, even if it ends up being MP and not real. He’s definitely in “Dying Detective” makeup there, and that’s E2.
Anyway, I think it’s likely something spoilery to the general audience, like you said. “The Three Holmes” (gives away there’s another brother) or something that would be too leading about a rug pull around Mary, Molly, Mycroft, Moriarty. Like “The Real Moriarty”. Or possible something definitely romantic like “The Prince’s Bridegroom”. All good suggestions I’ve seen on my dash.
Another option is that it’s obviously a twist on a case name that they think would be too leading/spoilery to the fans. You know how we take every little thing and run with it! They might just want to avoid starting any speculation in a specific direction.

At this point very little would surprise me. That Sherrinford word is the most potentially explosive, IMHO. If there is a third brother and E3 goes into Sherlock/Mycroft’s back story, that would be so cool.
