Martin Freeman to star in zombie thriller 'Cargo'; Icon takes UK
The Hobbit star to topline zombie thriller from The Babadook producer; Bankside launches sales.
The Hobbit star Martin Freeman is attached to star in zombie pandemic thriller Cargo from producer Kristina Ceyton (The Babadook).
Bankside is launching international sales on the project in Cannes and has pre-sold UK rights to Icon Film Distribution, which had success at the local box office with The Babadook. Umbrella Entertainment will release in Australia/New Zealand.
The feature is based on Yolanda Ramke and Ben Howling’s short of the same name, which clocked more than 10 million views on YouTube. Howling will direct with fellow first-time feature director Ramke, who has also written the script.
Freeman, who stars alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in hit BBC series Sherlock, will play a father who, stranded in rural Australia in the aftermath of a violent pandemic and, infected himself, desperately seeks a new home for his infant child and a means to protect her from his own changing nature.
Sam Jennings of Australia’s Causeway Films produces with Ceyton alongside Russell Ackerman and John Schoenfelder of LA-based Addictive Pictures. The film is set to shoot in Australia in fall 2016.
Financiers include Screen Australia, South Australian Film Commission and Head Gear Films. CAA and Bankside co-represent North American rights.
Bankside’s head of sales and marketing, Stephen Kelliher, said: “We are delighted to be working with the producers of The Babadook on Cargo. These filmmakers have a distinctive and elegant approach to the genre that we are certain will excite distributors and audiences worldwide.”
Ceyton added: “Martin Freeman is a singular talent who will add such depth and emotional sophistication to the role, and we know will make this story come alive in an unexpected and deeply moving way. We look forward to working with our partners Addictive Pictures and Bankside Films on this very special project.”
1. Martin Freeman is making a film in Australia!!
2. A film based on one of the best short films I’ve ever seen.
3. Martin Freeman will be coming to Australia to make a film!!
4. Cargo will be made by the producers of The Babadook, which is one of the best horror films I’ve ever seen, focused on the psychological drama which felt very much to me a horror film steeped in female experience of trauma.
5. MARTIN FREEMAN WILL BE IN AUSTRALIA TO MAKE A FILM SOME TIME IN THE FUTURE.
I have epic hopes of casually bumping into him at the glorious hat shop down the street from me, or at Captains of Industry while he buys really lovely hand made shoes, or near one of the hipster tailors round town. Then I can recommend he go to Embiggen Books for his reading material, and Brother Baba Budan for good coffee, and thank him for being an awesome Richard III.
None of which will happen. But still. Martin Freeman is coming to Australia to make a film based on one of my favourite short films, made by people who made one of my favourite horror films, so I at least also have epic hopes of him making a good film here.
I cannot fucking wait for this. It’s going to be mega BAMF!John Watson + Daddy!John. With a beard. I’ll stand in line right now, m’fuckers.
I also loved Badabook, so I’m super excited about the production too.

he’s gonna be all sweaty and dirty and bloodied up,
he’s gonna have to doctor himself and keep track of the progression of the infection, he’s gonna maybe have to do some fighting and shooting and hard-fought surviving, and then he’s also gonna have to bundle up and carry around a bab, he’s gonna have to entertain her and play with her and keep her from crying, he’s gonna have to protect her and feed her and cuddle her. he’s gonna be hard and softe and grimy and sweet and i am basically already dead
Exactly! Hubba hubba.

Mark Gatiss on how Sherlock Season 4 will go. (x)
‘A re-introduction’… sounds ominous!
(via monikakrasnorada)
The Case for Johnlock: Season 4
Based on the overall plot and what we’ve seen of setlock so far, I think that Season 4 is going to be set up like a trial. Not a literal one, but a figurative one.
Think about it. What is the number one thing this season has to accomplish? John and Sherlock’s relationship has reached it’s defining moment: they have to take the next step past “best friend”, and more importantly the casual audience has to be one their side rooting for this relationship as much as possible. This means that the writers will most likely have to make up for all those times they denied johnlock by spending this season working up to convincing people Sherlock and John are meant for each other and can have a healthy, committed relationship that isn’t just some spur-of-the-moment decision or act of “brotherly” love.
I believe that each episode will be set up to show different sides of this figurative trial.
Episode 1: Prosecution
In court the prosecution is bringing up a case against the individual(s) in question. For s4, the prosecution is the majority of people who believe that John and Mary are a loving couple who will have a happy life together with Uncle Sherlock running about on cases. This fitse with what (admittedly little) we have seen from ep1 setlock. We know that Sherlock, John, and Mary are making bare attempts at trying to act like everything’s fine and normal. Mary probably tags along on cases unwelcome, but at this point in the story the boys can’t really do anything as they have to let her believe she has the upper hand. This is important because addressing the baby and Mary will allow the writers to show just how much this life won’t work. They will show the audience what they think they want to see, then as the episode continues the situation becomes progressively worse, till most of the audience will be able to understand that this lifestyle is harmful to our main characters.
Episode 2: Defence
Until more setlock info comes out, I won’t make guesses about beach holidays or whatever they might do at Niagara Falls. Not nearly enough info to guess on those. But I do get the sense that this episode will be the calm before the storm. A little chunk of time and space will be carved out (possibly with having Mary disappear or preoccupied?) that let’s John and Sherlock have a moment alone to really tackle their feelings for each other. Each stage of their relationship has been defined in the second episode of each season (colleague, friend, best friend and loved, and in this season most likely boyfriend/lover/etc.) Now that the writers have addresses most John and Mary arguments, they can spend this episode proving to the audience why John and Sherlock’s relationship will be much healthier and understanding and truly loving. I’m not saying it will literally be hugging and kissing the whole episode, but slowly build up to a kiss while other things plot-related happen, eventually building up to the climactic moment.
Episode 3: The Verdict
I am still on the fence about whether The Kiss will happen in episode 2 or 3, but mostly I’m guessing episode 2. That’s because ep3 will be the most overarching plot-heavy. It will be all about the characters facing consequences for past actions. With canon johnlock confirmed ahead of time, the writers could use this episode to separate John and Sherlock, not by inside forces but outside forces dragging them apart. Hopefully the audience will now root to have John and Sherlock back together as it has been established this is the happy ending we want them to have. The episode ends with some sort of cliffhanger to keep us waiting for season 5.
This way, the writers have enough room to carefully handle such a patiently-built relationship, without shoving it into the last few moments or within an already confusing action scene. If the writers really want to convince as much of the audience as they can that John and Sherlock are canon couple here to stay, as I believe they do, then this is probably what we will be seeing in the coming season.
LOOOOOOVE THIS.
A very strong possibility you just nailed the frame work of s4.
I hope so!
